Names of Indira Gandhi and Nargis Dutt dropped from the categories of the National Film Awards, read details of changes made

On Tuesday (13th February), it was announced that the forthcoming National Film Awards would no longer feature the names of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the late actress Nargis Dutt, under revised rules for the 70th edition of the National Film Awards. This alteration, which excludes the late Prime Minister and the renowned actress from the National Film Awards, marks one of twelve total modifications implemented.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has revised the 70th National Film Awards 2022 regulations, resulting in increased cash prizes and category adjustments. These modifications were unanimously agreed upon by the committee formed by the Modi government during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As per the changes made by the committee headed by the government, the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film has now been renamed to the Best Debut Film for the Director. The Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration will now be called the ‘Best Feature Film on Promoting National, Social and Environmental Values’, merging the categories of social issues and environment conservation.

The amendments to the rules for the 70th National Film Awards 2022 encompass various enhancements, such as modifications to several awards and augmented cash prizes for various awards including the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The prize money for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, which is given every year to a film personality for contribution to Indian cinema, has been increased from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh. The money for the film award, which was earlier divided between the producer and the director, will now go only to the director.

Apart from this, the prize money has been increased to Rs 3 lakh for the Swarna Kamal Award (Golden Lotus Award) and Rs 2 lakh for the Rajat Kamal Award (Silver Lotus Award) Winner in many sections. Earlier, it used to vary according to categories. The awards for ‘Best Animation Film’ and ‘Best Special Effects’ have been added to a new category called Best AVGC (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics) Film with two sections.

The ‘Best Audiography Section’, which had three sections honouring Sound Recordist, Sound Designer and Recordist of Mixed Track, will now be known as Best Sound Design. Its prize money has been increased from Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakh. Changes have also been made in the Best Music Direction section, which will now be known as ‘Best Background Music’.

A Special Jury Award has been discontinued, but the jury has the authority to confer two awards in the feature film and non-feature film categories of the National Film Awards. In the non-feature film section, some parts have been discontinued while the rest have been merged. A new award category has been started for the best script.

Two film sections have been created by combining the categories like Best Psychological Film, Best Science and Technology Film, Best Ad Film, Best Environmental Film including Agriculture, Best Film on Social Issues, Best Educational Film, Best Adventure Film and Best Investigative Film. The best feature and best non-feature films promoting social and environmental issues are the new two categories made. Special jury awards in the Best Film as well as the Non-Feature section on family values have been discontinued.

The committee, headed by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Central Government, was headed by Additional Secretary of the Ministry Neerja Shekhar. It included filmmakers Priyadarshan, Vipul Shah, Haobam Paban Kumar, Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chief Prasoon Joshi, S Nallamuthu as well as I&B’s Prithol Kumar and the ministry’s Director (Finance) Kamlesh Kumar Sinha.

Tragedy of Hindu women of Bengal: Why police ‘probe team’ got no complaints of rape by the Sandeshkhali women and the tragic conclusion that awaits us

Sandeshkhali is a village in the Sandeshkhali II CD block in the Basirhat subdivision of the North 24 Parganas district in the state of West Bengal, India. The elected MP of Sandeshkhali is a woman – Nusrat Jahan, working under a woman Chief Minister – Mamata Banerjee. Despite this, women of Sandeshkhali have been humiliated and tortured by Sheikh Shahjahan, TMC’s strongman and Mamata Banerjee’s close aide. They are protesting and demanding his arrest, however, there are several unseen layers to their misery – beyond what meets the eye.

Sandeshkhali women have come on record, on video, explaining how they were being sexually exploited by Sheikh Shahjahan and his men.

While speaking to Republic Bangla on Saturday (10th February), a resident of Sandeshkhali recounted, “TMC workers would come to the village and pick out the ‘beautiful women.’ These men would hunt for young women and send diktat to their families to hand over the victims to them.”

“You may be the husband but you cannot exercise your right. They would take your wife away for nights at a stretch. They would not release the women from their captivity until they were ‘fully satisfied. They have 20-30 goons with them. They would come in bikes and exercise their writ in the village,” she emphasized. Another woman narrated, “I too have the same experience. They would forcibly take the women away to the party (TMC) office at night and free them only in the morning.”

Several such testimonies have emerged as the Sandeshkhali issue snowballed. Women speak of how their husbands were intimidated and threatened if they dared to protest against the sexual exploitation of their wives.

Despite the testimonies on video of several women, the special teams – two of them – that visited Sandeshkhali to investigate the case have received no complaint of rape.

One team was that was NCW and the other of Bengal Police headed by CID. A report in the Times of India says that the teams received complaints of land grab, molestation, harassment, torture etc, but not of rape. Charges of land grab, assault, harassment, non-payment of dues, and two instances of molestation were made and four complaints were received by a 10-member West Bengal police team led by CID DIG. Further, according to the report, complaints of intimidation and harassment were received by the two-member NCW team. The TOI report quotes a resident of Sandeshkhali who spoke to the cops saying that the police had refused to accept any complaints for over three years.

This report, now, will be used to whitewash the horror that the women of Sandeshkhali have been going through at the hands of TMC goons for years. However, it becomes important to understand the layers of misfortune of Hindu women of West Bengal and Sandeshkhali in particular.

OpIndia had compiled 12 videos where victims narrated the ordeal faced by them. One woman informed that the Block Development Officer (BDO) and the local police are working hands-in-gloves with the TMC party cadre.

According to Republic Bangla, the police accompanied the Trinamool Congress workers and harassed the women protesting against party goons Sheikh Shahjahan, Uttam Sardar, and Shibo Prasad Hazra.

“We could not sleep a wink since a large contingent of police came here with bikes and cars. The sound of their approaching footsteps and loud talks terrorized us throughout the night. The men in our families could not stay the night due to their fear,” a woman narrated her ordeal. “Police came to our house at 3 am. They abused my husband and tried to molest me. They even broke my Pola (red bangle married Bengali Hindu women wear). The police threw away my daughter. Policemen were so drunk that they were unable to stand,” the wife of a local BJP worker Bhujang Das informed.

Other residents of Sandeshkhali recounted the ill-treatment by the local cops. One woman was heard saying, “The police asked me if I sleep with other men. How could they ask me this? I need an answer. What wrong have I committed to be insulted with abuses like mother f*cker?”

“The police abused my husband as a ‘son of a pig.’ He was pulled out of the house. What crime did he commit? We need justice. Can the police personnel abuse someone like this?” she continued.

Therefore, there are certain facts, when we talk about Sandeshkhali, that need to be taken into account. First, the man the women are accusing, along with his goons, is a TMC strongman and also a close aide of Mamata Banerjee himself. Second, the women are on record saying that the police had refused to accept their complaints for several years. Third, several women have come on record to blame the police as much as Shahjahan and his men.

Now, the very police who have been accused by the women of Shandeshkhali as aiding the TMC goons – goons of a strongman close to Mamata Banerjee – are trying to ‘instil confidence’ in women to come ahead and file complaints of rape.

One has to truly understand the predicament of these women. Firstly, for women especially belonging to the rural part of India, filing a complaint of rape is never an easy decision. Even talking about it on camera, like the women of Sandeshkhali did, is a decision that must have come after they saw no other option. There is a substantial stigma attached to rape victims and the decision to file a complaint comes at a heavy personal and societal cost. Further, these women were expected to trust the very police that has also been tormenting them for years. As is the testimony of the victims, the Bengal police refused to accept complaints against Sheikh Shahjahan and his men for over 3 years. Further, some statements indicate that the police were complicit and aiding the goons of Sheikh in the torment being unleashed upon the resists of Sandeshkhali. In such a scenario, a police team will certainly not be trusted by the women, enough to give them complaints of rape.

Further, Sheikh Shahjahan himself has not been arrested. Given the track record of TMC, there is a suspicion that the police and the government is deliberately taking no action against Sheikh because he is viewed as being a close aide of the Chief Minister herself. The women of Sandeshkhali are certainly scared of the consequences they might have to face if they file complaints with the police and just as they have in the past, they end up helping Sheikh and his men in ensuring that the women who filed the complaints are taught a lesson later.

It is unthinkable that women, who have been regularly abused, harassed, and sexually exploited by the very goons they say have been protected by the police, would come out and file official complaints with the same police about the same set of goons they have been protecting.

Truth be told, while it is likely that the women were scared to file complaints of rape, I would personally not be surprised if we find out in a few days that the women wanted to complain but the police team simply turned a blind eye.

We saw a similar predicament during the post-poll violence of 2021 where TMC men had gone on a killing, arson, and raping spree against Hindus. Several victims had spoken to journalists about the sexual exploitation and the rape they had been subjected to at the hands of TMC goons after Mamata Banerjee won a landslide victory in Assembly Elections. During the violence itself, the police were woefully unavailable. They had refused to take action against the TMC goons. OpIndia had spoken to one such victim who was gang-raped in front of her father by goons who demanded “Hindu women” specifically. While she came on record, there were several who could not. First, they were already in fear. Second, they knew that they had to live and survive in the very area where even the police would protect the goons who tormented them. Having no avenue to safeguard themselves, the victims refused to come on record and file complaints. As such, those stories would forever remain buried because, without any evidence or victim testimony, it would be impossible to report.

Unfortunately, it would seem that the women of Sandeshkhali are stuck in a precarious situation where their tormentors are now in charge of ensuring justice is dispensed to them – a proposition that will have expected conclusions.

If one could venture a guess, one could say that at the end of this “investigation” by the West Bengal police, the only point that the TMC would harp on is that no incident of rape was reported by the Sandeshkhali women and therefore, any conversation around the plight of these women, who have spoken about their sexual exploitation on camera, was a political gimmick against Mamata Banerjee. The politicking would take precedence and the women would be left to fend for themselves. At the end of it all, unless there is a comprehensive strategy to rescue the women of Sandeshkhali and ensure their safety, the sexual exploitation of these Hindu women is bound to turn into yet another story – forgotten and relegated to one of those unfinished tales of the reign of terror unleashed in West Bengal.

‘I can get you booked under SC/ST Act…’: Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad ‘Ravan’ threatens administrative officials in Auraiya, video viral on social media

0

A video of Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad ‘Ravan’ is going viral on social media where he can be heard threatening the administrative officials reportedly in Uttar Pradesh’s Auraiya.

In the video, he can be heard telling the officials that it is a matter of a second for him to book them, including the District Magistrate, under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. “Would you like to be trapped in a case? This is not good,” he can be heard and seen telling the Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM).

The video is reportedly from his visit to Auraiya’s Sahar police station area where the Dalit leader was visiting to meet the widow and children of Brijesh Kumar who was murdered on 22nd January 2023. Almost a year before his murder, Brijesh Kumar’s mother’s body was also recovered from a farm in 2022.

As per reports, his father Jai Prakash was also allegedly murdered. However, the charges of murder were not proven in all cases. The family resides in Bahadurpur village.

Brijesh Kumar’s widow, Aarti Devi had levelled murder allegations against Gajendra Singh and 4 others and submitted a complaint to the police based on which an FIR was filed against 4 people and one unidentified person.

Gajendra Singh was arrested while reportedly no other arrest in the case seems to have been made yet. Aarti Devi recorded a video message seeking Chandrashekhar Azad’s intervention for justice in the case.

Following this, on 7th February 2024, Chandrashekhar Azad ‘Ravan’ visited the family to pay his condolences. He reportedly assured Aarti Devi of justice and demanded a pension and arms license for the widow and education for his son.

While presenting his demands before the district administration, the Bhim Army chief can be heard warning the administrative officer, the SDM and circle officer (CO).

“Arrest and send him to jail and explain what the case is in your chargesheet and you tell the court what it is,” he was heard telling the CO.

Azad could be heard telling the SDM in the video that had the murder been committed by a Dalit’s son, they (the administration) would have brought the entire family at crossroads.

He said, “I know the police very well.” He demanded action against the accused and compensation for the bereaved family.

“(Budget) Money is to be deposited within 7 day do you know that? I can get a case filed against you under SC/ST Act do you know that? Let me explain it to you if you don’t know. If you do not send the money in their (accused) account within 7 days then I can file a case against you CO, you (SDM) and DM. It will take a minute, it is a matter of seconds for me. Would you like to be trapped in a case? This is not good,” he told the SDM and CO.

He also demanded permanent security for the victim’s family. He also cited other laws under the SC/ST Act saying that the act provides for the shifting/resettlement of the victims to another place if they don’t feel safe in the area they are living in.

The video has drawn widespread condemnation with netizens criticising Chandrashekhar Azad for flexing his muscles by misusing the SC/ST Act to threaten the administration.

‘There is no one above Allah’: Muslim organisations object to mandatory Suryanamaskar in Rajasthan government schools, HC to hear case

The Rajasthan High Court on Wednesday (14th February) is scheduled to hear a petition that challenged the decision to perform Suryanamaskar mandatorily in all the government schools across the state. The petition was filed on Monday (12th February) by several Muslim organizations who sought annulment of the State government’s order for mass Suryanamaskar in schools on 15th February.

The Muslim organizations who filed petitions under the banner of Muslim Forum include Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Tehreek-e-Ulama Hind, Muslim Musafirkhana Committee, All India Milli Council, Jamiat Ulama Rajasthan and other Muslim organizations.

The petition filed by the organizations states that the government order is unconstitutional and violates Article 25 of the Indian Constitution which guarantees the freedom to profess, practice, and propagate religion to all citizens.

According to the reports, the decision to mandatorily perform Suryanamaskar is going to be implemented in all the government schools across the state from 15th February on the occasion of Surya Saptami.

Another organization, Jamiat Ulema e Hind meanwhile has called on students to boycott the program and not attend school on 15h February. They claimed that the required program directly interferes with anyone’s religious freedom. According to Jamiat’s state general secretary, Abdul Waheed Khatri, Hindus consider the Sun as a God, but in Islam, there is no one above Allah.

On the other hand, state education minister Madan Dilawar has stated that Suryanamaskar is not a religious practice and that a number of other countries have adopted the namaskar as a type of yoga, which is observed globally on June 21.

“I have come to meet my family members. I have brought the fragrance of the soil where you were born and have brought the message of 140 crore people. The message is that Bharat is proud of you,” he added.

“I remember my first visit (to the UAE) in 2015 when it had been only some time since I came to the Centre. It was the first visit of an Indian PM to the UAE, after three decades. The world of diplomacy was new to me. At that time, I was welcomed at the airport by the then Crown Prince and today’s President along with his five brothers. That warmth, the shine in their eyes – I can never forget that…That welcome was not for me alone but for the 140 crore Indians,” the Prime Minister said.

He also expressed his gratitude for UAE’s highest civilian award – ‘The Order of Zayed’ which was conferred on him in 2019 – and said the honour was not just for him but for crores of Indians and the Indian diaspora residing in the Gulf country.

The Prime Minister also emphasised the ongoing commitment to cooperation in Ease of Living and Ease of Doing Business, pointing to the signed MoUs that further strengthen these ties.

“Both the countries are cooperating a lot in Ease of Living and Ease of Doing Business. Even today, the MoUs that were signed between us are taking forward this commitment…In terms of community and culture, the achievements of Bharat and UAE serve as a model for the world to emulate,” PM Modi said.

Emphasizing the commitment to provide the best education in the UAE, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that a new Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) office will soon be established in Dubai.

These institutions will be helpful in providing the best education to the Indian community here”.

The Prime Minister was greeted by “Modi-Modi” slogans before he began his speech.

Haldwani: Police post established on land that was freed from encroachment in Banbhoolpura, inaugurated by women personnel

Within a day of the announcement by CM Pushkar Singh Dhami that a police station will be built on the spot where illegal construction was demolished, the Nainital Police have established a temporary police outpost on the land parcel that was freed of encroachment recently in Banbhoolpura, Haldwani.

The police post was inaugurated by women personnel who were injured in the attack by the Islamist mob in the violence on 8th February.

On 12th February, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami announced at a public event in Haridwar that the rioters who had attacked the police personnel and had even assaulted the women police personnel during the anti-encroachment drive on 8th, will not be spared. He had added that a police station would be established on the land parcel that was made free of illegal encroachment that day.

CM Dhami had condemned the attack on police personnel and municipal officials in strong words and had assured that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

On 8th February, the civic authorities in Haldwani went to demolish an illegal madrasa built on government land in Banbhoolpura when a Muslim mob attacked them. It resulted in a wave of violence across Uttarakhand’s Haldwani, leaving at least six people dead and over 300 police personnel injured. Superintendent of Police Harbans Singh confirmed the same on 9th February. Uttarakhand authorities have registered three First Information Reports (FIR) against 5000 unnamed, and 19 known individuals.

The Nainital Police have arrested 30 rioters and seized pistols, guns, and other ammunition from them. Speaking to ANI, SSP Nainital said that police have recovered 99 of the police ammunition looted by the rioters when they attacked Banbhoolpura police station on 8th February. He added that efforts are on to arrest the main accused Abdul Malik. Malik, who reportedly masterminded the attack during the demolition drive at the place known as ‘Malik Ka Bageecha’, has been absconding. The authorities have slapped a recovery notice of Rs 2.44 crores on him for damage to government properties and vehicles.

How can a political party occupy land allotted to the High Court: Supreme Court slams AAP for encroaching land allotted to Delhi HC

On 13th February (Tuesday), the Supreme Court slammed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) when it was informed that the party had ‘encroached’ on the land in Delhi that was allocated for the Delhi High Court. The court expressed displeasure that the AAP political office, located at Rouse Avenue in Delhi, was built over encroached land. The Court subsequently ordered that all encroachments on the land must be removed.

Notably, the Court took notice of the issue when it was dealing with a case related to judicial infrastructure across the country. The three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra was hearing the matter.

During today’s court hearing, Amicus Curiae K Parameshwar informed the bench that even though Delhi High Court officials went to take possession of certain land allotted to them, “a political party office was built there” and they could not take the land back. He, however, did not expressly mention the name of the political party and clarified that he did not want to politicise the issue.

The Law Secretary to the Delhi Government, Bharat Parashar was present online before the court. He informed the bench that the “political party” was allotted the land by way of a cabinet resolution in 2016.

Parashar added that now the matter has been informed to the Land and Development Officer (L&DO) and the process to allot another land to the political party is underway. Before 2016, the said land was a bungalow that was occupied by a minister and it was later occupied by the political party, the Law Secretary added.

The CJI, who appeared to be annoyed after learning about the encroachment, warned the counsel representing the AAP-led Delhi government that the land must be returned to the High Court. CJI Chandrachud remarked, “No one can take law into their own hands … How can a political party sit tight on that?”

The Delhi government was represented by Senior Advocate Wasim Qadri and Additional Solicitor General of India Vikramjit Banerjee.

Asking the Delhi government’s counsel about the timeline, the CJI said, “Mr.Qadri and Mr.Vikramjit Banerjee, you better find out and tell us tomorrow when is the possession being given back to the High Court. What is this? We are not asking for judges’ bungalow or something…we are asking for public amenities. And a political party is sitting tight on that! Why did you allot it to the High Court then? Tell us when are you going to give unencumbered possession to the High Court. This has to come to an end. The High Court is going to use it for the citizens and the residents of Delhi. Tell us what you are doing”.

Subsequently, the Court directed the Chief Secretary, Finance Secretary of the Delhi government, and Secretary to the Delhi Public Works Department to convene a meeting with the Registrar General of the Delhi High Court to ensure that encroachments are removed. According to the court’s direction, the meeting is to be held before the next date of hearing in the matter before the top court.

In a previous hearing, the Supreme Court criticised the Delhi government for its negligent approach to allocating funds for infrastructure in the Delhi district judiciary. At that time, the Chief Justice of India noted that as of March 2021, approvals had been given for three out of four projects, yet the funds for these projects had not been disbursed.

Swami Prasad Maurya, infamous for his comments on Hinduism, resigns as General Secretary of Samajwadi Party, claims discrimination

On Tuesday (13th February), Samajwadi Party leader Swami Prasad Maurya announced that he is resigning from the post of party’s National General Secretary. However, he would remain a member of the Samajwadi Party. In his resignation letter addressed to SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, Swami Prasad Maurya said that he would continue to work to strengthen the party without any post.

The Samajwadi leader, infamous for making comments on Hinduism, expressed shock and claimed that he is facing discrimination as despite him being the General Secretary of the SP, his remarks were discarded as those given in a personal capacity. He argued that how a senior party leader’s remark could become personal while others were seen as the party’s stance.

In the letter, Swami Prasad Maurya wrote, “I couldn’t understand how, as a national general secretary, any statement of mine becomes personal, while there are other national general secretaries and leaders whose every statement becomes a party statement. It’s perplexing how, among officials of the same level, some statements are considered personal and others party statements.”

Claiming discrimination, he added, “If there is discrimination even in the post of National General Secretary, then I believe there is no justification for continuing in such a discriminatory and insignificant position.”

Swami Prasad Maurya has been courting controversies for making disparaging remarks on Sanatan Dharma, Ramcharitmanas, Ram Mandir, and the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. Recently on 8th February this year, the controversial SP leader attacked Hindus and mocked the Pran Pratishtha (consecration ceremony) of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya which took place on 22nd January. It is notable here that ‘Pran Pratishtha’ is a Hindu ritual that consecrates an idol in the sanctum sanctorum of a temple.

In his address at the Uttar Pradesh assembly, he ranted that the Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha ceremony was “unnecessary”. He even went so far as to call Lord Ram “lifeless” during his outburst against the event. During his tirade, legislators from the Bharatiya Janata Party repeatedly raised their voices in protest.

On 10th January, Swami Prasad Maurya even justified the then Mulayam Singh Yadav-led Uttar Pradesh government’s ‘shoot at sight’ order which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of unarmed and innocent Karsevaks in the year 1990 after BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani’s iconic rath yatra.

Maurya alleged, “At the time the incident occurred at the Ram temple in Ayodhya, unruly elements committed large-scale vandalism without judicial or administrative intervention.” He further claimed that the shocking decision was made “to safeguard the constitution and the law and to protect the peace, the then administration gave shoot-at-sight orders. The government merely did its duty.”

In December last year, Mauryareiterated and tried to justify his disparaging “Hindu ek dhokha hai” remark.

On 12th November 2023, Swami Prasad Maurya insulted Goddess Lakshmi on the festival of Diwali. Criticising Sanatan Dharma for worshipping Goddess Lakshmi on Diwali, Maurya argued on Twitter (X) saying that Goddess Lakshmi can never have four hands. He refused to worship Goddess Lakshmi and worshipped his wife on the occasion of Diwali instead.

On 19th September, Swami Prasad Maurya claimed that the word ‘Hindu’ means ‘thief’ and ‘despicable’ in Persian while speaking at an event at Gandhi Bhawan in Hardoi district under “Samvidhan and Arakshan Sarakshan Sena”.

In August last year, the SP leader branded Hinduism as a hoax, one that is ‘trapping’ tribals, Dalits, and backward communities, as per him. He claimed that Hinduism is not a religion at all and advised people not to fall for this ‘trap’. Taking to X, he wrote a post slandering Brahminism, and Hinduism, and claimed that Brahminism has been named as Hindu religion to exploit backward castes in the country.

Swami Prasad Maurya had also claimed earlier that certain portions of the Ramcharitmanas “insult” a large section of society on the basis of caste and demanded that these be “banned”. Following his controversial remarks against Ramchatritramanas, many FIRs were filed against him.

Barbed wire, stones, mob shouting ‘hit them, make them flee’: Municipal Corporation employees share details of Islamist violence in Haldwani

On 8th February 2024, the administration team which went to Malik Colony in Banbhoolpura in Uttarakhand to demolish an illegal madrasa and mosque came under brutal attack by Islamist mob. The mob pelted stones at the officials, police personnel, and journalists alike while bullets were also fired. The mob also set fire to the police station, and a petrol pump, and attempted to burn police officers alive. Female police officers had to run to save their lives. They were allegedly misbehaved and their clothes were torn.

The mob didn’t spare the Journalists either. Local journalists shared their ordeal alleging that the Islamist extremist mob was singling out Hindus among administration officials, police personnel, and journalists, and allegedly hatched a conspiracy to kill them.

Haldwani’s Congress leader Gabbar Valmiki told OpIndia that sanitation workers were also attacked the next day at the same place where riots erupted on 8th February. He firmly supported the imposition of the NSA (National Security Act) on those who attacked the police, stating that stones were collected for the attacks from the railway lines. Gabbar Valmiki, residing in Ward No. 13 of Jawahar Nagar, stated that going against the administration was a well-planned conspiracy.

Valmiki further informed OpIndia that all preparations for the attack were made in advance. Stones were also hurled at Municipal Corporation workers on Monday (February 12th, 2024). Gabbar Valmiki is the youth secretary of the district unit of the Congress. He referred to Abdul Malik as the wealthiest man in Haldwani. He asserted that the NSA should be imposed on the attackers, adding that if the police had not been present, there would have been a massacre. Gabbar Valmiki mentioned that sharp stones were thrown from rooftops, adding that the stones thrown by those below would not be able to reach the top.

OpIndia also spoke to another sanitation worker, Mithun Valmiki. He mentioned that he was driving the municipal corporation vehicle with 20-25 sanitation workers when they encountered a crowd of women who came forward and began arguing with the police. Subsequently, children were pushed forward. He continued by saying that suddenly, stone pelting began, and the vehicle was surrounded, forcing him to get out and run to save himself. In the ensuing chaos, Mithun Valmiki’s feet got stuck in wires laid out by the mob, and then bricks were pelted at him.

However, Valmiki managed to escape somehow. He mentioned that he has a wife and two sons, and neither of his parents are alive. He added that if he hadn’t run away, he wouldn’t have been able to save himself from danger. He noted that the rioters had iron rods in their hands, and even the police officers were running to save their lives. Sanitation worker Mithun Valmiki further told OpIndia that from where he was, he could hear the rioters shouting ‘Kill them, drive them away.’ He added that there was a conspiracy to burn them alive. The government is taking care of his treatment as his foot is broken. However, he won’t be able to rejoin his job for at least a month or two.

Mithun Valmiki recounted that after fleeing and reaching home, he felt the pain. He mentioned that the attackers included children, vehicles were set on fire, and government property was burnt. He shared that if he had died, nobody would look after his family, so he wouldn’t go back to work there again.

Another sanitation worker from the Dalit community, Manoj Valmiki, mentioned that they had gone there on behalf of the municipality. While they were there, officers were trying to explain things to the protesting women, but as they were returning, the mob began pelting stones from all sides.

Manoj’s hand was injured due to the stone pelting by the Islamist mob. Manoj Valmiki told OpIndia that no one from the other side was trying to stop the rioters. His treatment is also being done at government expense. He noted that there is not a single employee of the police and municipal corporation who wasn’t injured. He has a 15-year-old son and a daughter, and they don’t even have their own house. Meanwhile, encroachers are illegally constructing houses, and when action is taken against them, they resort to rioting.

Manoj Valmiki said that Hanuman Ji saved him. He mentioned that several stones were pelted at them, and even things like flowerpots were also thrown. He added that he pleaded with Hanuman Ji to save him and then somehow he found strength within himself, and he ran straight to his Valmiki locality. His wife was in a terrible state and cried profusely. A JCB was clearing the road ahead of the sanitation workers, otherwise, many people could have died after getting stuck in the sharp barbed wires.

Another Dalit employee of the Municipal Corporation, Sagar Sonkar, also sustained injuries. He said that he was present at the spot during the riot and he feared that he would die. He had become unconscious. He told OpIndia that it seemed that this conspiracy was in the works for 6 months. According to Sagar Sonkar, he was bleeding continuously. It took him 7-8 hours to reach home because stones were being thrown from all sides wherever he went. He added that people from the other community didn’t even try to stop the stone-pelters. He mentioned that if he hadn’t run, he would have been killed.

Islamists cry ahead of inauguration of the first-ever Hindu Mandir in UAE; wish the temple be run by Islamic priest someday

Ahead of the inauguration of the first-ever Hindu Mandir at the hands of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Abu Dhabi, Islamists are spreading hate against the Hindu religion and the current Indian government on several social media platforms.

On Wednesday, February 14th, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Swaminarayan Mandir in Abu Dhabi, the first Hindu temple in the United Arab Emirates. Prime Minister Modi will visit the UAE from February 13 to 14. This will be PM Modi’s third visit to the UAE in the last 8 months. Apart from the inauguration of the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir, PM Narendra Modi will also address the Indian diaspora at the ‘Ahlan Modi‘ event on 13th February 2024. He will also hold bilateral conversations with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and attend the World Government Summit 2024 in Dubai as the ‘Guest of Honor’ and address the summit.

While several Indian celebrities praised Prime Minister Modi and described the historic BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Abu Dhabi as the result of his commitment to fortify bilateral relations with the nation, the Islamists began to criticise Prime Minister Modi and his government, accusing it of targeting Muslims in India and supporting the construction of a Hindu temple in an Islamic country.

“It is Modi’s model to favour Arab Muslims and lynch Indian Muslims,” alleged one of the users on X. Another one also indicated that in India the government was demolishing Muslim religious structures and supporting the construction of Hindu temples in UAE.

Some other Islamists targeted the UAE government for allowing the ‘Alhan Modi’ event and also the construction of a Hindu temple in the UAE. “What happens when Indians demolish Muslim religious structures in India? Shame on you UAE people” stated one of the users.

The other one meanwhile wished that the temple be run by an Islamic priest someday.

While PM Modi will inaugurate the BAPS Mandir on February 14th, the gates will open to the public on March 1st, 2024. The temple complex will also include a visitor centre, prayer room, exhibitions, a learning centre, a play area for children and youth, gardens, water utilities, a food court, and stores selling books and gifts.

On Monday (12th February), Sadhu Brahmaviharidas, the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha’s foreign relations director, thanked UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his extraordinary generosity and openness in supporting the construction of this historic temple.

He also conveyed his sincere admiration for the UAE’s rulers and leaders, as well as the friendship between India’s Prime Minister and the UAE authorities.

Sadhu Brahmaviharidas also shared the profound symbolism included in the temple’s design. The Mandir, adorned with seven spires, represents thankfulness for the unity of the seven emirates, signifying India’s cordial relationship with the UAE. The seven spires also honour seven prominent deities, demonstrating the interdependence of cultures and religions.

The temple’s use of advanced technology, including 300 sensors, elevates it to the level of a scientific marvel.

Even before its official opening, the Mandir has become a symbol of global solidarity. Over 60,000 people from all backgrounds, cultures, and nations have actively participated in its construction.

Ambassadors from 40 countries recently convened to honor the temple, underlining its importance as a unifying factor in the global arena, according to Swaminarayan Sanstha, the BAPS’s head of international affairs.

In 2014, the BJP government came to power at the centre and Narendra Modi took oath as the Prime Minister of India. As part of foreign policy, the Modi government strengthened relations with the Middle Eastern nations and India-UAE ties became stronger.

Consequently, in the year 2015, the UAE government allotted land for the Hindu Mandir. Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly lauded the gesture of the UAE government stating, “I am very thankful to the UAE Govt for their decision to allot land to build a Mandir in Abu Dhabi. This is a great step.”

Both governments entrusted Swaminarayan Sanstha and Mandir Limited to construct, develop, and administer the Mandir project.

Afterwards, the construction work of this Mandir started on the gifted land in Abu Mureikhah, Al Rahba area on the Abu Dhabi-Sweihan-Al Ain Road, close to the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway.
