Assam govt to acquire 17 institutions including Hotel Ginger for demolition to expand waterbody in Guwahati, plots in lake were allotted by Congress govt

The government of Assam announced yesterday that several structures located in eastern Guwahati, including a Ginger hotel operated by the Tata group, will be acquired for demolition. The hotel is part of 17 institutions which will be acquired and demolished by the govt to expand the Silsako Beel (lake), a vital waterbody in the Assam capital.

Silsako is one of the several lakes in Guwahati, and several stormwater drains empty into it. These lakes are vital for the drainage of rainwater from the city during the monsoon season. But over the last several years, the lake has shrunk substantially due to encroachment. Shrinkage of the water bodies has been identified as one of the major reasons for flooding that Guwahati sees every year during the monsoon.

To solve the problem of flooding, the Himanta Biswa Sarma government has started eviction of encroachments from the water bodies, including the lakes and riverbanks, in Guwahati. As part of this, the eviction of structures around the Silsako lake started on 27 February, and a large number of houses constructed within 100 meters of the lake were demolished.

However, several institutions, including the Ginger Hotel, the office and tennis courts of the All Assam Tennis Association, a Hotel Management Institute, and several other such institutions could not be demolished, even though they were constructed on the lake. This is because these institutions were allotted land at the area by the previous Congress government. Himanta Biswa Sarma was a minister in the Tarun Gogoi government at that time. He was also holding Guwahati Development Ministry for some time.

However, during the demolition drive, the CM had said that all structures within the lake area will be demolished, and the govt will legally acquire the institutions which were allotted land by the govt earlier. Even the households who were staying in the area prior to 2008 will be rehabilitated, the CM has assured. Assam govt has also promised some of the organisations to allot them land somewhere else.

Silsako Beel was declared a protected wetland by the govt under the Guwahati Water Bodies (Preservation and Conservation) Act, 2008, prohibiting construction and settlement in the designated area.

Housing and Urban Affairs minister Ashok Singhal yesterday announced that the govt will acquire a total of 179 Bigha 17 Lecha land allotted to 17 institutions. “Govt. of Assam will acquire a total area admeasuring 179 Bigha 17 Lecha in the Silsako Beel area, currently allotted to 17 institutions/organisations. Hotel Ginger is also one of the organisations whose land will be acquired,” he tweeted.

Ashok Singhal posted a list of 17 institutions identified for acquisition by the govt for demolition. However, the name of Hotel Ginger does not appear on the list of 17 institutions posted by minister Singhal. This is because the hotel is built on land leased from the Institute of Hotel Management. The IHM was allotted 20 bighas of land by the Tarun Gogoi govt, and the hotel was built on a part of this land taken on lease for 33 years.  The hotel pays an amount of ₹3 lakh per month to IHM including the lease rent and profit variable.

These 17 institutions were identified after the state govt had directed the Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner to give details of lands allotted by the government to various organizations in Silsako Beel.

The decision to acquire Ginger Hotel and other institutions will shut the criticism of the eviction drive by the opposition parties, who were alleging that the BJP govt will not touch the rich and will only evict the common people.

Earlier on 1 March, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had informed that he has asked the DC to take steps to immediately shift institutes like Hotel Ginger, Omiyo Kumar Das Institute and others from Silsako. “We must remembering Wetlands are natural solution to the global threat of climate change,” he had said.

Apart from Ginger Hotel and the Institute of Hotel Management, the other institutions identified for acquisition by the govt are Asam Sahitya Sabha, All Assam Tennis Association, Cooperative Management Institute, Titabor Bhawan, Koch-Rajbongshi Sanmilani, Madhyamik Shikshak Santha, Omiyo Kumar Das Institute, All Assam Moitri Coordination Council, Assam Tea Labourer Welfare Council, Hengrabari Junior College, National Institute of Television and Theatre, Assam Assembly Secretariat Housing Quarters, Tepuram Teron High School, TV Centre Housing Colony, a high school and an animal care centre.

Among these, Sahitya Sabha and Assembly Secretariat Housing Quarters were allotted 50 bighas each, Hotel Management Institute and TV Centre Housing Colony were allotted 20 bighas each, while all others were given small plots of 1 to 7 bighas.

Interestingly, Hotel Ginger in Guwahati has said that they are not aware of any plan by govt to shift it and even announced renovation plans a few days ago. The hotel management said that they are planning to start its internal and external renovation next month. “We have no plan of shifting, neither have we been asked by anyone. We are planning on our internal and external renovation which is scheduled to start on April 15,”  a senior employee of the Ginger Guwahati said.

However, as the land was allotted to Hotel Management Institute and not the hotel, any eviction notice will be sent to the institute by the govt, and the hotel may not receive any direct communication from the govt. As stated above, Ginger Guwahati is built on land leased from IHM which was allotted land by the state govt in the lake area.

According to a Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority’s letter to the govt shared by the minister, a total of 269 structures built on encroached land were demolished around Silsako lake. The demolished structures included 4 temples, 1 mosque and 1 Namgar.

The Silsako Beel development plan will expand the elongated lake to create a 200-metre-wide channel of approximately 2.5 km length. Apart from it, a round lake with developed banks will be created on the wider section of the lake, which will be modelled on the Kankariya lake in Ahmedabad and Gopi Talav in Surat.

Surat: Muslim man pretends to be Hindu to lure a Hindu woman into relationship and have sex for months, arrested after Aadhaar card exposed the lie

In a stunning case of Love Jihad, Police arrested a man named Wasim Akram Waheed on Saturday in Surat, who trapped a 24-year-old Hindu female in a relationship by lying about his original identity and faking a Hindu name. He also had sex with her regularly by promising marriage. The accused has been booked for rape and breach of trust. The girl is a leading varsity topper in Surat.

According to the complaint, the perpetrator is a resident of Rajput Faliya in Vesu area, Surat. He runs a business named Sunrise event. The victim, who is also from Vesu, recently began event management services in addition to her academics. She met Wasim, who identified himself with a fake Hindu name Vasu Gwaladiya. He offered her a business partnership because his previous female partner had quit.

With the formation of a partnership, they both talked on phone calls frequently and grew close. They began dating eventually. He led her to a hotel while claiming to be at work, and there, while enticing her of marriage, they engaged in a sexual relationship. The woman said that she was ignorant of the offender’s affiliation with a different religion at the time.

He sexually exploited her for more than seven months, from 1st July 2022 to 10 February 2023 by taking her to various hotels. He used to take her to different places for event management work, and keep her in hotels on some pretext.

She discovered his Aadhar card, which bore his real name, Wasim, in their office in February when the office was being shifted and learned of his true identity. When she confronted him with this, he threatened her by saying that he will kill her and her family if she discloses it to anyone else. After this, she broke off her business partnership as well as ended the romantic relationship with him. She then filed a complaint with Vesu police against Wasim, narrating the entire incident.

‘No force in the world can harm democratic traditions of India’: PM Modi gives a befitting reply to Rahul Gandhi over his comments in the UK

On 12th March 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that no force in the world can harm the democratic traditions of India. Giving a befitting reply to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi over his recent comments in the UK, PM Modi said, “India is not only the largest democracy, but it is the mother of democracy. It is unfortunate that questions are being raised in London on India’s democracy.”

Without taking Rahul Gandhi’s name, PM Modi lashes out at him for his comments in the UK where he had alleged that democracy is under threat in India under the Modi government. Rahul Gandhi had even questioned the USA and Europe for not interfering in India.

Addressing a public meeting at Dharwad in Karnataka, PM Modi said, “I am fortunate to have inaugurated the statue of Bhagwan Basaveshwar in London. That Bhagwan Basaveshwar whose Anubhav Mandapam is the unique experience of democracy. I am blessed to have inaugurated his statue on the soil of London. But it is unfortunate that in the same London, questions were raised about India’s democracy. The roots of the Indian democracy are nourished by the centuries-old history we have. No force in the world can harm the democratic traditions of India. Despite this fact, there are some people who are continuously questioning Indian democracy. They are insulting Bhagwan Basaveshwar. They are insulting the people of Karnataka, the democratic traditions of India, and the 130 crore aware people of India. The people of Karnataka should be alert to these people.”

PM Modi was in Dharwad to inaugurate the new campus of IIT-Dharwad. He said the 12th-century social reformer Basaveshwara had conceptualised the Parliamentary system through ‘Anubhava Mantap’, and the people in the United Kingdom have also erected a statue of Basaveshwara as a mark of reverence to the social reformer.

It is notable that on Thursday, 2nd March 2023, Rahul Gandhi launched one of his usual attacks on the Modi government and said that it was undermining the democracy of India. While delivering a presentation at Cambridge University, Rahul Gandhi said that the Israeli spyware Pegasus was being used to monitor his phone.

PM Narendra Modi dedicated and laid the foundation stone of key development projects in Hubballi-Dharwad, Karnataka today. The projects include dedicating to the nation IIT Dharwad whose foundation stone was also laid by the Prime Minister in February 2019, the longest railway platform in the world at 1507m in length at Shree Siddharoodha Swamiji Hubballi Station which has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records recently, the electrification of Hosapete – Hubballi – Tinaighat section and the upgradation of Hosapete station, for boosting connectivity in the region.

The Prime Minister also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for various projects of Hubballi-Dharwad smart city. He also laid the foundation stone of the Jayadeva Hospital and Research Centre, the Dharwad Multi Village Water Supply Scheme, and Tupparihalla Flood Damage Control Project.

Tamil Nadu: Man stoned to death allegedly by supporters of a DMK councilor over a property dispute

On Sunday 12th March 2023, shocking news surfaced from Ponneri town of Tiruvallur in Tamil Nadu where supporters of a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) councilor allegedly killed a man in a fight that took place due to a property dispute. In the incident, a man named Balamurugan was killed after he was pelted with stones. Allegedly the aides of the DMK leader attacked him for taking the side of a woman who was in a dispute with another woman.

All the key members including Elango – the DMK councilor of ward number 17 in Ponneri – involved in this dispute are related to each other. The two women involved in the property dispute are also relatives. Ernavur Hariharan and others accused in the case are identified as supporters of the DMK councilor. CCTV footage of the incident also appeared in the media.

According to reports, the two women Nandhini and Gayathri were having a property dispute. Polimer News reported that Gayathri had already filed a complaint with the local police against Nandhini alleging that the latter forcefully thrashed her out of the house owing to some disagreement between the two. Gayathri was living on rent in the ancestral house of Nandhini. Nandhini is Gayathri’s aunt.

According to reports, after thrashing Gayathri out of the house, Nandhini kept the keys to the house with her. In the heated dispute that followed after this, the local DMK councilor Elango, his accomplices including Ernavur Hariharan, and others came in support of Nandhini to allegedly attack Gayathri and her family. Gayathri and her sister Keerthi were allegedly beaten outside the house. After this, Gayathri’s relatives Robert and Balamurugan supported Gayathri to file a complaint with the police.

Gayatri filed a complaint with the Ponneri police along with the CCTV footage related to the incident. Allegedly, the police did not take immediate action and it is said that they waved it off as a civil problem. After the complaint was filed, DMK councilor Elango and his supporters including Vinod, Dilip Kumar, and Rajkiran allegedly argued with Robert and Balamurugan and assaulted them because they had helped Gayathri to file the complaint.

Robert and Balamurugan were attacked with stones. In this attack, Robert succeeded to escape while Balamurugan sustained severe injuries. He was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead. After Balamurugan succumbed to fatal injuries in the assault, the police registered a case from both sides.

Vinod Kumar and Rajkiran have been arrested in the murder case. Dilip Kumar is absconding and the police are looking for him. Gayathri’s relatives alleged that if the police had arrested the councillor and his supporters at the beginning of the incident, the murder would not have happened.

This is not the first time that a DMK councilor’s name has been embroiled in a murder case. On 8th February 2023, a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) municipal councillor named Chinnaswamy and his accomplices had beaten Prabhakaran, an Indian Army soldier from Krishnagiri. On 15th February 2023, Prabhakaran succumbed to the injuries.

The scuffle resulted due to a minor argument that broke out on 8th February between Prabhakaran and Chinnaswamy who objected to the soldier and his brother Prabhu washing clothes at a water tank near their house. Later on that day, they were ambushed by Chinnaswamy and others, who brutally beat Prabhakaran.

US Embassy in India props RJ Sayema with problematic views to ’embrace equality’, netizens react

On Sunday (March 12), the official Twitter handle of the US embassy in India stirred the hornet’s nest after it endorsed controversial radio jockey Sayema Rahaman for Women’s History Month.

“Breaking gender barriers with her powerful voice and messages, RJ Sayema is a trailblazer in broadcasting who inspires us to Embrace Equity. A Radio Jockey and YouTuber, she often uses her platforms to amplify diverse voices and inspire change. #Women History Month,” it said in a tweet.

The archive of the tweet can be accessed here. The development comes days after the US senate voted in favour of the nomination of Eric Michael Garcetti, who openly labelled the humanitarian Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) as ‘discriminatory, as the US ambassador to India.

Netizens were miffed at the choice of their ‘personality’ for Women’s History Month. A Twitter user remarked, “Most of her tweets in social networking platforms were communal and regressive.”

One Rahul added, “So America has now openly started to encourage extremists in India.”

“What a shame U.S. Embassy! She is definitely not our inspiration but an Islamic bigot. Correct yourself please,” another user pointed out.

Author Anshul Pandey inquired, “So being Anti-Sanatan is a big achievement as per the US embassy in India.”

One Dr Rajendra Nirantar wrote, “Shocked and surprised by the choice and the mindset.”

Another Twitter user posted, “Very soon the US Embassy will declare Osama bin Laden as a Sufi saint.”

Problematic views of Sayema

In December 2019, the radio jockey was seen inciting a mob to hold demonstrations outside the Delhi police headquarters against alleged police brutality against Jamia students. Following outrage on social media, she was quick to delete the tweet.

Radio Mirchi RJ Sayema’s tweet inciting mob to gather in large numbers outside Police HQ in Delhi

In December 2020, Sayema was a frontrunner in creating an atmosphere of vaccine hesitancy in India. In a hurry to discredit Covaxin, she falsely claimed that Haryanan BJP Minister Anil Vij tested positive a month after he was administered the indigenously developed Covid-19 jab.

In the same year, a video featuring Sayema went viral online wherein she was seen legitimising the usage of radical Islamic terms such as ‘Kafir’ and ‘Jihad’ and thus normalising anti-Hindu bigotry.

In July 2022, Sayema was seen peddling disinformation about Hindu men posing as Muslims and offering namaz inside the Lulu mall in Lucknow. She was also at the helm of downplaying atrocities, committed against the Hindu community by her co-religionists, on social media.

The radio jockey was also seen patronising and virtue-signalling the Hindu community during the festival of Diwali in 2017. Sayema has defended Coronavirus ‘superspreader’ Tablighi Jamaat and even tried to fool her audience about Islamic scriptures.

‘Where is your dupatta?’: Muslim Instagram users attack Sasural Simar Ka actress Dipika Kakkar Ibrahim for sharing her photo without a veil

On Saturday, March 11, ‘Sasural Simar Ka’ fame Hindi television actress Dipika Kakkar Ibrahim, who recently announced her pregnancy, dropped a picture of herself on her Instagram page. The actress was seen wearing a printed frock dress.

“When u are trying to pose but what u get is a perfect candid,” the actress wrote in the caption. The ‘candid’ picture, however, did not go well with a section of people who trolled the actress over her outfit.

Muslim social media users targeted her for appearing in the photo without a veil or dupatta.

An Instagram user named Shah Syeda Bushra wrote “You wore a Dupatta in Saba’s (sister of Dipika’s husband Shoaib Ibrahim) wedding but now when you need to wear a Dupatta more than ever, you are not…this is wrong Dipi Baji.”

Another user named Abeer Khan advised Dipika to cover her baby bump with a Dupatta to protect it from ‘evil eyes’.

An Instagram user named Hena Nawaz called Dipika’s ‘Khandaan’ (family) as cheap. “sister saying something to you is an insult to oneself…the whole family is frustrated after Neha Faizi…yuck you cheap Khandaan,” Hena Nawaz commented.

Another one wrote, “Now where is your Dupatta, everything changes for money Faiza madam.”

It is notable that Dipika Kakkar had converted to Islam before she had a Nikah with actor Shoaib Ibrahim. Dipika adopted the name ‘Faiza’.

One Instagram user named Shahnawaz Khan wrote, “Where is your Dupatta now, during Saba’s wedding you were flaunting your Dupatta on your head.. #fraud family.”

Another one named Inamdar Nazma went on to accuse Dipika and her family of making fun of Islam and wrote, “Where is ur dupatta madam…U kept ur name Dipika then why u wear dupatta on ur head.. Ur whole family making fun of Islam…be natural…If we say anything u people get angry.”

Dipika Kakkar Ibrahim slams people who called her pregnancy ‘fake’

It is worth mentioning that the actress recently slammed the ‘trolls’ who called her pregnancy ‘fake’. The Sasural Simar Ka actress posted a video to her YouTube channel in which she could be seen to be extremely disturbed and irritated at the comments made by netizens.

In the video, she said, “Main nautanki baaz hun. Thik hai hu ab kya. Grow up guys, aap jis tarah comment karte ho meri pregnancy ko lekar is it ok? Aap ye comment kar rahe ho ki main fake kar rahi hu bump ko. Aap ek pregnant aurat ko bol rahe ho ye vo sahi hai?”.

Dipika and Shoaib trolled over the ‘Holi’ picture

On March 8, Shoaib and Dipika shared a picture of them celebrating the Hindu festival of Holi on Instagram and wished everyone “Happy Holi sab ko”.

Several Muslim fans of the couple were, however, quick to remind the couple that they are Muslims and that they are not allowed to celebrate festivals of other religions as per Islam. Several Muslims were also upset over the fact that the couple forgot to wish on the occasion of Shab-e-Baraat but did not forget to post ‘Holi’ pictures.

An Instagram user (mana4na) wrote, “AAQA O MOLA HAZRAT MUHAMMAD MUSTAFA NOOR E HAQ(S.A.W.W) said that those who follow Mushabhat (analogies) of other religions are certainly not one of us.”

Another one named Nazi Shadab wrote, “Playing Holi is a big sin.”

One Instagram user named Kahkasha wrote, ” What sort of Muslims you are who celebrate Holi in Shab-e-Baraat.”

Uzma Sharif expressing her ‘thoughts’ advised Dipika and Shoaib not to celebrate Holi as Hindus don’t celebrate Muslim ‘occasion’. “U are Muslim ignore this event because Hindus don’t celebrate our occasion. It’s my thought. Allah doesn’t like shirk.”

Some others also trolled the couple for celebrating Holi instead of Shab-e-Baraat.

Notably, Dipika and Shoaib had met for the first time on the sets of the hit TV show Sasural Simar Ka. Dipika, who was earlier married to Raunak Samson, divorced him. Soon, the affair between Dipika and Shoaib started, and the duo got married on February 22, 2018. Dipika converted to Islam following her marriage to Shoaib.

Tej Pratap Yadav alleges that folk artists he invited for Lathmaar Holi stole valuable items from his govt bungalow in Patna, FIR filed

On 12th March 2023, Bihar minister Tej Pratap Yadav filed a complaint against folk artists from Vrindavan on charges of theft of costly items worth Rs 5 lakhs from his residence in Patna. Tej Pratap Yadav’s assistant Misaal Sinha lodged an FIR in this regard.

Misaal Sinha alleged in the FIR that the folk artists who were called to perform during the lathmaar Holi celebrations held at the minister’s residence on 9th March 2023 carried out the theft on the same day before leaving for Vrindavan.

The complaint alleges that valuable items worth Rs 5 lakh, including a laptop, were stolen from the house. The FIR names Deepak Kumar and five other artists, called for the event, as suspects in the theft. Strangely, apart from the laptop, the complaint does not give any details of other items stolen.

Misaal Sinha wrote in the complaint that the artists fled from the house on 9 March without informing anyone, and the theft of valuable items worth around Rs 5 lakh was discovered the next day. He also wrote that Tej Pratap Yadav called Deepak Kumar on 10 March to talk to him about the theft, but after that, Deepak and his friends are regularly calling the minister on his phone and issuing threats.

The police have confirmed receiving the complaint but didn’t give any detail about the stolen items. After the FIR was filed, police from the secretariate police station reached Tej Pratap Yadav’s house at 3 Strand Road in Patna and conducted an investigation.

Before this incident, a mobile phone was stolen from the house earlier, and a case was filed against a person named Chandan, who worked at the minister’s residence.

It is notable that Tej Pratap Yadav organized Holi celebrations in Vrindavan style at his Patna residence. He hosted a grand Ras Leela from 5th March to 8th March 2023. For this, artists were invited from Vrindavan. Tej Pratap Yadav shared this information in a tweet that he posted on 4th March 2023.

On 9th March 2023, Tej Pratap Yadav was seen celebrating the lathmaar Holi with the artists from Vrindavan. A video of the celebration also appeared on social media in which Tej Pratap Yadav, dressed as Krishna, was seen celebrating lathmaar Holi with the artists.

Now, Yadav’s assistant has lodged an FIR against the artists invited by the minister to perform in the Holi celebrations he hosted at his official residence.

The cabinet minister of the Environment, Forest & Climate Change Department in the Government of Bihar often makes it to the news for reasons very different from other politicians.

On 22nd February 2023, he cycled to his office after Samajwadi Party’s founder late Mulayam Singh Yadav allegedly appeared in his dream. It is notable that the cycle is the election symbol of the Samajwadi Party. In October 2022, he claimed that he remembered Sai Baba from the bottom of his heart and the holy ashes (bhabhuti) from Shirdi’s Sai Baba temple reached him the next day.

Tej Pratap Yadav is a very religious person and often describes himself as a devotee of various Hindu gods. In the past, he had said that he is Lord Krishna who will bring change to Bihar. He often dresses up like Lord Krishna, Lord Shiva, and other Hindu gods and saints.

Bihar: Fire at two temples in Kishanganj, locals allege miscreants set them ablaze, police claim ‘accidental fire’

0

Two temples were set on fire and idols were damaged in two temples in Kishanganj, Bihar at the early hours today. A Durga temple and a Hanuman Temple were destroyed in the incident that took place at around 3 AM on 12 March at Mastan Chowk in Bagalbari Panchayat in Kochadhaman block of Kishanganj district. The fire also destroyed the nearby shops. No arrests have been made so far.

A police team reached the spot as soon as they received the information. The fire was put out by the villagers with the assistance of the police. Police and magistrates were deployed together at different places to tackle the sensitive situation.

Idols in both temples were damaged by the fire, including a Shivling and other idols. While the cause of the fire is known yet, locals have alleged that mischievous elements set the Hindu temples on fire. However, police have denied it, and said that it was an accident.

Police have released a statement and called it ‘accidental fire.’ Locals however are refusing to accept this version, and protested demanding action in the case.

After the incident, local Hindus blocked the  Kishanganj-Bahadurganj main road demanding the arrest of the accused within 24 hours, causing a blockade of traffic. Senior police officials reached the spot and were able to convince the protestors to end the blockade by 10 AM.

Hindu organizations and their members sat on strike. A number of BJP politicians also arrived at the protest location and joined in. Demonstrators were also calling for the installation of CCTV cameras all around the temple, along with the demand for the reconstruction of the temples and restoration of the idols by the government. Bricks and other building materials were brought by the administration for the reconstruction of the temples in response to public demand.

While the people have been alleging that the temples were deliberately set on fire by someone, the police have appealed to them to not make any false claims, saying that it was an accidental fire. The police also threatened action against spreading rumours regarding the incident.

Issuing a press release, the Superintendent of Police of Kishanganj said that there was an accidental fire in the temple, which has been brought under control. ‘In this regard, common citizens and media are requested not to spread false rumours in this regard. If rumours are spread, strict action will be taken as per the law,’ the statement said.

Kishanganj SP Inam Ul Haq said that there was an accidental fire at Mastan Chowk of Kochadhaman police station area at around 3.30 AM in the night. As soon as the information was received, the fire was brought under control with the help of firefighting vehicles. Four shops and a temple have been affected in this incident.

He added that the situation is under control at present, the blockade of the road has been lifted, and there is no law and order issue. ‘Work is being done for the restoration of the affected temple with the participation of the administration and the local people,’ the SP added.
