Imran ‘Taliban’ Khan hails Tipu Sultan as a hero, Shashi Tharoor is all praises for one bigot hailing another

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor took to Twitter to express his admiration for Pakistan’ Prime Minister, Imran Khan for paying tribute to Tipu Sultan on his death anniversary. The Congress leader, on one hand, expresses his regards for ‘Taliban Khan‘ for reminiscing Tipu Sultan and on the other hails Tipu Sultan, a tyrant, by calling him a ‘great Indian hero’.

This hero-worshipping comes days after Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Imran Khan took to Twitter to express his admiration, praising the 18th-century ruler of Mysore and to pay tribute to him on his death anniversary.

“Today 4th May is the death anniversary of Tipu Sultan – a man I admire because he preferred freedom and died fighting for it rather than live a life of enslavement,” Imran Khan tweeted on Saturday.

Though history has glorified Tipu Sultan for his valour, there are recorded instances where Tipu had committed the most despicable atrocities against Hindus. Tipu Sultan was a cruel tyrant who took immense pleasure in forcibly converting Hindus to Islam.

There are testaments, in the form of his letters, in which Tipu, time and again expressed his passion for forcible conversion. In 1788, in a letter to Abdul Kadir, Tipu says, “Over 12,000 Hindus were ‘honoured’ with Islam. There were many Namboodiris (Brahmins) among them. This achievement should be widely publicised among the Hindus. There the local Hindus should be brought before you and then converted to Islam. No Namboodiri (Brahmin) should be spared. Also, they should be confined there till the dress materials sent for them, reach you.”

Moreover, the list of Tipu’s atrocities was not limited to this. The Mysore Gazetteer asserts that over 8000 Hindu Temples were destroyed across South India by Tipu and his army.

Temples and Churches were ordered to be burnt, desecrated and destroyed. Christian and Hindu women were forced to marry Muslims and similarly, Hindu men were forced to marry Muslim women. Those Christians who refused to be ‘honoured’ with Islam, were ordered to be killed by hanging then and there.

Meanwhile, journalist and filmmaker Reham Khan, who was briefly married to Pakistan PM Imran Khan, in her article titled Imran Khan, the closet bigot published by Firstpost, had written how Imran Khan routinely uses derogatory words for Hindus and Christians. Imran Khan, the ‘liberal icon’ who famously flaunted his playboy image, had the same thoughts about women and rape like orthodox Mullahs, said Reham in her article.

Therefore, Pakistan’ Prime Minister hailing a tyrant and bigot is somehow justifiable. But for Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, expressing his admiration for a bigot like Imran Khan and also hero-worshipping an oppressor like Tipu Sultan only exhibits the deep-rooted casteism and bigotry, on which his party has been thriving for decades.

Congress’ approach towards wooing voters always seem to be caste or community-based. However hard they try to project a ‘Soft-Hindutva’ image, Congress’ predisposition towards the minority community cannot be shielded. Congress bigwigs like Digvijay Singh had ahead of Madhya Pradesh assembly polls made some objectionable statements, asserting that he had been receiving a bad name for helping the Muslims and Dalits because they are being constantly threatened from different sections of society.

Similarly Congress veteran, Kamal Nath was caught on camera resolving to use the Muslim card, weeks before the Madhya Pradesh state elections. In a ‘behind-closed-doors-meeting’, Kamal Nath was perceived saying that ‘only the Muslim votes can make the Congress party win’.

These statements coming from Congress veterans had exposed the devious intent of the party which has made Soft Hindutva in public, minority appeasement in private and creating caste divide in secret its latest mantra.

So far so, a decade ago, the Congress-led UPA government had submitted before the supreme court that “there was no historical proof of Lord Ram”.

Continuing in this context, in December, the Congress party had decided to maintain ambiguity over its stance on Ram Mandir by refraining from commenting on the matter.

Rahul Gandhi furthering the anti-Hindu stance, which his party actually, fundamentally, believes in, had told the US ambassador that Hindu extremists were a bigger threat to India in the context of the Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Besides this Hindu terror bogey, was the infamous communal violence bill which the Congress-led UPA government wanted to enact. All this is apart from the noise made by the state level leadership of the Congress, which includes Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah asking for the opinion of district heads regarding the withdrawal of cases lodged against people from the minority community.

Congress leader Sushmita Dev had specified its party’s intent, that if Congress comes to power, then Congress will scrap the Triple Talaq Bill, which was brought in by the Modi Government making triple talaq an offence.

Congress has mastered the art of playing the minority card to its benefit and has eventually developed into constant tactics where the party is always seeking the excuses to undermine Hindus, demonise Hindu practices and defame the community with lies and propaganda. Definitely, Shashi Tharoor is as much a part of the brigade. Probably this is the reason which made Shashi Tharoor go all head over heels for a bigot (Imran Khan) hailing an another (Tipu Sultan).

Congress duped farmers in the name of loan waiver, Rahul Gandhi and Kamal Nath giving contradictory statements: Shivraj Singh Chouhan

Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had accused the Congress of blatantly lying and deceiving the poor farmers of Madhya Pradesh. In a press conference held in Bhopal on Monday, Chouhan claimed that both Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath have given contradictory statements on the matter of loan waiver to farmers in the state.

Congress had, as a reaction to Chouhan’s claims, sent documents to him, containing details of farmers whose loans have been waived off by Congress-led government in the state.

Calling it an eyewash, Chouhan said that Kamal Nath government has provided him with only the documents of the agricultural department and not bank statements. He asserted that the loans are given out by the banks, so to ascertain the truth, bank statements should have been provided by the Congress government in Madhya Pradesh. Shiraj Singh Chouhan perceives this is a mere plot to mislead the farmers.

A Congress delegation led by former Union Minister and Congress leader Suresh Pachouri on Tuesday reached the official residence of former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan with documents containing details of farmers whose loans have been waived off by Congress-led government in the state.

He said the government needed a fund of Rs 48,000 crore for loan waiver but its budget is only Rs 5,000 crore. The banks were merely given Rs 1,300 crore. He alleged that farmers were duped in the name of loan waiver.

Reading out a message from CM Kamal Nath to a farmer named Mahesh Kumar Dhakad, Chouhan alleged that “both Rahul Gandhi and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath have given contradictory statements on the matter of loan waiver to farmers in the state. While the former is saying that the loans of farmers were waived within two hours of forming a Congress government in the state, the latter has sent messages to lakhs of farmers on their mobiles stating that though the application for waiving loans have been received it cannot be granted as Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for the Lok Sabha elections is in place.”

Chouhan furthered that when beneficiaries identified under Pradhan Mantri Samman Nidhi Ayojna can be benefited why cannot the loan waiver schemes be implemented. Accusing Congress President Rahul Gandhi of deceiving the farmers of Madhya Pradesh, the senior BJP leader and former MP chief minister said that the Congress chief is lying on the issue of loan waiver of farmers.

Chouhan stressed that the Rahul had promised to waive off the loan within 10 days of coming to power but the party has failed to keep its promise even after 120 days. He furthered that Rahul Gandhi had before the MP assembly election made big promises of waving off all the farmers loans, now he is backtracking by applying conditions to the loan waiver schemes.

He said that the farmers are in fact being sent notices for repayment of loans. This is extremely deceitful as the Congress government had emphasised on wavering loans of poor farmers of Madhya Pradesh in their party manifesto.

Loan waiver schemes promised by Congress is a major sham. Congress has been lying to the farmers. The farmers who have a small loan amount have received notification that their loan has been waived off, but, according to Chouhan, the loan waiver amount has not yet been credited to their respective bank accounts.

He urges Congress to satisfy the poor farmers instead for trying to convince him by sending across incomplete documents of proof to his office.

Supreme Court ‘perplexed’ after Rahul Gandhi’s contempt case hearing gets mysteriously delayed

The Supreme Court, on Monday, was perplexed that a contempt plea against Rahul Gandhi was separated from a bunch of review petitions when the Court had earlier decreed that both should be heard together, on May 6. Bewilderingly, the contempt plea against the Congress President was not listed and it will be now heard on the 10th of May.

“We are little perplexed that the two cases are listed on two different dates when the order was that these matters will be heard together,” the bench, headed by CJI Gogoi and comprising of Justice S.K. Kaul and K.M. Joseph, reportedly said.

On April 30, a Bench led by the CJI himself had dictated in open court that the Rafale review and the criminal contempt case against the Congress President would come up for hearing together on Monday, the 6th of May.

However, the copy of the order published on the website later on April 30 evening showed the date of the contempt plea to be May 10, the last working day before the court closes for summer vacations. The mysterious change of dates is sure to raise some suspicions as both matters have major political implications for the Congress party.

CJI Gogoi also expressed his surprise at the mysterious change of date. “I remember clearly dictating in court that the Rahul Gandhi contempt case would come up for analogous hearing on May 6 along with the Rafale case. How did this happen? How has it happened that the order copy says May 10”, the CJI reportedly asked.

The court, however, shifted the hearing of the Rafale review petitions to May 10. The three-judge bench of Justices SK Kaul, KM Joseph and the CJI, stated that the Rafale reviews petitions too will be heard along with the contempt case against Rahul Gandhi on May 10.

The Supreme Court had admonished the Congress President for attributing his ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’ comment to a Court judgment on the matter after BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi filed a contempt petition against him for the remark.

The Supreme Court observed then that it had on “no occasion” made any comments as attributed by Gandhi and that the judgment was solely on the legal question of admissibility of documents produced by review petitioners. Rahul Gandhi was also sent a notice by the Court.

In his reply, the scion of the Nehru-Gandhi Parivar expressed ‘regret’ over the matter and admitted that the Court said nothing of the sort. He said it happened during the heat of campaigning. However, the Court wasn’t impressed with his ‘regret’ and was again rebuked by the Court and asked to offer a proper apology in a new affidavit.

Meanwhile, the event of the contempt plea not being listed on May the 6th is not the only suspicious thing that has occurred. As the matter reached the Courts, allegations of sexual harassment surfaced against the CJI who claimed that it was an attempt to dissuade him from hearing important cases.

Terrorism has no religion but people who mourn death of terrorist do, according to PDP spokesperson whose interview The Wire published

The leftist propaganda The Wire interviewed PDP spokesperson Waheed ur-Rahman Para which was published as an ‘edited testimony’ by the portal on 5th of May 2019. The testimony reveals the dangerous mindset of politicians in the valley and that of a vast section of Kashmiri society.

The testimony also reveals that Kashmiri terrorism is not merely a political issue, it’s deeply religious. In a single testimony, Rahman equates cows to terrorists, attempts to undermine the legitimacy of anti-terror operations and hypes up the Hindu-Muslim divide.

The ‘testimony’ of the PDP politician which The Wire published without any rejoinder only reveals the hidden agenda of certain leftist media outlets. The ideas voiced in the ‘testimony’ are quite dangerous and yet, The Wire meticulously reproduces them without any critique of its own or even a counter question to the interviewee who is mouthing off dangerous rhetoric.

The article says, “Yesterday’s funeral [of Lateef ‘Tiger’] – these funerals are now the political events of south Kashmir. Ten thousand people arrive spontaneously, without an invitation. This is the crowd we should be seeing at political rallies. Those 10,000 people are voters – but who among them is going to vote? Their sentiments are on the boil because, for the first time, the government became more interested in anti-militant operations as elections got closer. Otherwise, if you want a smooth election, you don’t mobilise 10,000 people against participating. Automatically, an encounter is an anti-election event.”

TheWire.in article

It appears fairly obvious, although quite evidently not to Rahman, that terrorist sympathizers not voting in Indian elections is a good thing. I cannot imagine them voting for a candidate who’s conducive to Indian interests. If anti-terror operations are seen as anti-election events, then perhaps, the people do not deserve to participate in democratic politics. And it is a sad reflection of Kashmiri politics that even politicians speak the language of terrorist sympathizers. But then again, politicians are only a reflection of the electorate. And it shows that the people of Kashmir need to set their priorities in order.

Rahman says further, “Here, they are not avoiding confrontation – rather, they are inviting it. As a result, south Kashmir is in a constant state of funerals. It is massive mourning. We cannot go now and talk about votes, and tell them, ‘Let’s dance for this democracy’. We cannot ask for a celebration amid their mourning. Each of the 7,000 people at yesterday’s funeral [in Dongarpora, Pulwama] will stop their families from coming out. And the district where the operation happened [Shopian] will do the same. It is a design to kill the democratic process.”

If people are mourning terrorists who have been eliminated, then it’s them who are at fault, not Army or the Government of the time. If people prioritize terrorism over their democratic right, then it’s their choice. Of course, choices have consequences and they will have to live with them for the remainder of their lives.

The PDP spokesperson also has issues with the decision of the Election Commission to conduct elections in three phases in a single constituency. While Rahman reserves great criticism for the EC, he doesn’t have a single harsh word to spare for the terrorists and their sympathizers who necessitate such drastic measures.

On one hand, Rahman claims that people won’t come out to vote because of the encounters in the state and then proceeds to blame the Election Commission for conducting elections in three phases which he believes is designed to reduce voter turnout. Both of them, quite obviously, cannot be simultaneously true. Either people don’t want to vote, in which case the EC’s decision has no effect, or voters will not come out to vote as they fear being targeted by terrorists and their sympathizers who Rahman was himself sympathizing with earlier. Rahman cannot have his cake and eat it too.

What appears most dangerous, however, when he rakes up the Hindu-Muslim communal divide to justify his rhetoric. He says, “A lot of Kashmiri police officers also conduct encounters, but they do not celebrate them. They understand that sensitivity. But the people celebrating on TV, or in the BJP, are non-Muslims. Those who are mourning are Muslims.”

TheWire.in article

If there was ever any doubt that Kashmiri separatism is inspired by religious motives, then they should be buried to rest. People should stop being ostriches and confront the real issue here. Rahman does get one thing wrong, however. It’s not recently that people of Kashmir have started seeing the security forces as Hindu. It has always been the case. The Indian Army has always been hated in the valley. The hatred is such that stones were pelted as CRPF soldiers lay dying in the aftermath of the Pulwama Terror Attack. It’s a trend that has been observed for decades.

We are constantly bombarded with propaganda that terrorism has no religion and yet, it appears people who claim such a thing themselves admit that those who mourn the death of terrorists do have a religion and they are Muslims. It’s a remarkable cognitive dissonance.

Amidst all of this, Rahman manages to drag in the Amarnath Yatra as well and claims military operations aren’t conducted in the run-up to the Hindu pilgrimage to prevent tensions from escalating. He conveniently forgets to mention that pilgrims are awarded the most stringent of security during the Yatra and despite, sometimes, it’s not enough and terrorists succeed in their monstrous deeds.

The most hilarious bit certainly is the false comparison drawn between cows and dead terrorists. Cows give us milk and help us in various other endeavours while the only thing terrorists have to offer is blood and death. The testimony offers great insight into the psyche of Kashmiri politicians and that of the people in the valley. It also reveals why the situation in Kashmir is unlikely to improve in the coming years.

Most importantly, however, the ‘testimony’ reveals how eager so many media portals are to provide platforms to terrorist sympathizers and Kashmiri separatists and effectively work as their mouthpiece.

Stung by Rajiv Gandhi’s corruption and incompetence being debated, Congress resorts to spreading abhorrent fake news on PM Modi

The months of negative campaigning against PM Modi by Congress, the constant use of derogatory jibes and remarks, the incessant peddling of the ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’ slogan against a democratically elected Prime Minister with an impeccable record and many such tactics were dealt a smashing blow when PM Modi reminded the Congress recently about how their fallacious ‘Mr Clean’ Rajiv Gandhi was consumed eventually as the ‘Bhrashtachari Number 1’.

Since PM Modi brought up Rajiv Gandhi’s name into play, a pandora’s box has been opened, and many skeletons that were buried deep in Congress’ closet are out in the open to haunt the party. From the Bofors scam to Bhopal gas tragedy, the recalling of Rajiv Gandhi’s tainted legacy seems like something Congress is desperately struggling to free itself from.

Yesterday, PM Modi ‘challenged’ Congress to fight the elections in the name of their beloved former PM.

PM Modi has brought up issues deeply unsettling for Congress. Issues with the potential to cause heavy losses in the upcoming phases in the election which include Delhi where Sikhs witnessed genocide in 1984 and Bhopal, which saw thousands dying and millions suffering due to the gas tragedy.

These may be the reason why Congress and its ecosystem has taken their attacks on PM Modi to new depths. After many social media influencers and Congress-supporting media brigade tried painting the criticism of Rajiv Gandhi as a shameful act, giving the bizarre excuse that he is dead so it is not acceptable to criticise him, now a fresh smear campaigning has been started.

Image via @meashu291 on Twitter

A person named Ria, who claims to be a member of Congress in South Mumbai, has shared a fake newspaper clipping which portrays PM Modi’s late father as a thief and claims that he had died of a heart attack after a young Narendra Modi left home taking all the gold his father had bought from the stolen money. The fake clip also claims that PM Modi’s siblings still blame him for their father’s death.

This so-called newspaper clip does not mention any date or the name of the paper. This is, however, being shared by many handles on social media, often in support of verified handles criticising PM Modi’s remarks on Rajiv Gandhi.

In fact, the contents of the fake news clips are sourced from another fake news that had surfaced in 2016. Then, a similar fake news clip, attributed to Hindi daily Amar Ujala, had been circulated claiming that PM Modi’s eldest brother, Prahladbhai Modi has stated those things about their family and their father’s death.

fake news falsely attributed to Amar Ujala in 2016

However, Amar Ujala had soon clarified that they had not published any such news and it is a fake clip being attributed to them. Subsequent fact-check reports had also dismissed the claims and had concluded that the clippings and the claims are all fake. PM Modi’s brother Prahladbhai Modi had also denied ever giving any such statements.

It is interesting to note that the Congress supporter Ria, who had shared the fake news clip, had deleted her Tweet after a Twitter user Ankit Jain drew the attention of police for her attempt to spread falsehoods about PM Modi.

Congress leaders have often launched attacks on PM Modi and his family. They have mocked his caste, humble background, his family and even his mother’s age. The party obsessed with one ruling family, however, often forgets that PM Modi or the BJP criticising former PM’s of Congress is a democratic right. Rahul Gandhi’s father, grandmother and great grandfather were all prime ministers of India and prime ministers are accountable for their actions. However, PM Modi’s family, a poor family from a small town in Gujarat that struggled to make ends meet, did not indulge in corruption, did not impose the emergency or did not cause the murder of thousands of Sikhs in the streets of Delhi.

PM Modi’s family also does not reap political benefit from his position and power. Unlike the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, PM Modi’s brothers or nephews will not be the BJP leaders or the party’s PM candidate. Targetting and attempting to besmirch a simple Indian family that had suffered losses of its own and had struggled a lot to make its children educated despite poverty, is another display of the depths the Congress plunges to in order to gain some political mileage.

Priyanka Chopra’s Met Gala look has netizens in splits, compare her to a scarecrow

This year for the Met Gala Priyanka Chopra Jonas stepped out in a dramatic nude-coloured Dior gown with feather detailing from its Spring 2018 collection sporting a bizarre curly hairdo topped with a silver-straw crown and loud make up complete with a bindi. Twitterati donned their funny hat and had everyone in splits with their reactions.

This year, the theme was Camp: Notes on Fashion – to coincide with an upcoming exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts, inspired by photographer Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay, Notes on Camp.

The outfits this year will be based on “irony, humour, parody, pastiche, artifice, theatricality and exaggeration”. Clearly, the celebrities seem to have gone for the ‘exaggeration’ bit.

This one is very, very relatable.

You’d relate to this one if you’ve spent hours on YouTube going through makeup tutorials.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas was not the only one to go for shock and awe look at this year’s Met Gala. Deepika Padukone wore a Zac Posen custom metallic pink gown.

Actor Zendaya went to Met Gala dressed as Cinderella.

While Kim Kardashian’s sisters Kylie and Kendall looked like they were dressed as her evil stepsisters.

The Met Gala, or the Costume Institute Gala is the annual fundraising gala thrown for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York and marks the opening of Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit. That year’s exhibit’s theme is celebrated at the event where celebrities wear their outfits to match the theme. The ball which is thrown on the first Monday of May had ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’ as the theme in 2018.

SC shatters 21 opposition parties’ EVM fear mongering in less than a minute, dismisses petition for 50% VVPAT verification

The opposition parties and the Rahul Gandhi led Congress, in particular, have been fear-mongering regarding Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) regularly. Interestingly, the Congress believes that wherever they lose the EVMs have been tampered with and when they win, like Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, the EVMs worked perfectly. The fear-mongering suffered a huge blow today when the Supreme Court (SC) refused the opposition party’s plea to order 50% VVPAT verification of voting.

The Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi dismissed the review petition filed by 21 opposition parties combined for the review of its decision in case of verification of voting by VVPAT. The opposition parties wanted 50% VVPAT verification in these Lok Sabha Elections.

CJI Gogoi said they were not inclined to review their decision while dismissing the plea by opposition parties.

On 8th April 2019, the Supreme Court had partially allowed the petition by directing the Election Commission to increase the number of polling booths from 1 to 5 per Assembly segment for the matching of votes cast on EVMs to VVPAT slips.

Congress leader AM Singhvi had said that they would “settle” for 33% VVPAT verification instead of the 50% originally demanded as increasing polling booths per assembly segment from 1 to 5 for matching of votes doesn’t seem “reasonable”. The proceedings lasted for less than a minute, according to reports, according to a report by LiveLaw.

However, according to the Times of India, Singhvi had even agreed to “settle” for 25% verification. The court summarily rejected the petition.

The petitioners were : N Chandrababu Naidu (TDP), Sharad Pawar (NCP), K C Venugopal (INC), Derek O Brien (TMC) ,Sharad Yadav (LTJD), Akhilesh Yadav (SP), Satish Chandra Mishra (BSP),M K Stalin (DMK) ,T K Ranga Rajan (CPI(M)) ,S Sudhakar Reddy (CPI), Manoj Kumar Jha (RJD), Arvind Kejriwal (AAP), Farookh Abdullah (NC), K Danish Ali (RJD),Ajith Singh (RLD), M Badrudding Ajmal (AIUDF), Jithin Ram Manji (Hindusthani Awam Morcha) Ashok Kumar Singh (JVM), Khorrum Anis Omar (IUML), Prof.Kodanadram (Telengana Jana Samithi) and K G Kenye (Naga Peoples Front).

Netflix takes Pakistani line, shows Kashmir as a part of Pakistan in its show ‘Street Food’

Netflix in its newly premiered show Street Food has taken the Pakistani line and shown Kashmir as a part of Pakistan.

Netflix Street Food Asia India episode where Kashmir is shown as part of Pakistan

The documentary that recently premiered on Netflix, focuses on street food across Asia including India. India’s street food is talked about in episode 3. However, Netflix displays the wrong map of India showing Kashmir as part of Pakistan.

India’s map shown by Netflix has cut off part of the Indian state Kashmir which is illegally occupied by Pakistan.

To explain things better, following is the real map of Kashmir. In the map, one can clearly see the “Northern Areas – Illegally incorporated with Pakistan”. That is the part of Kashmir which Netflix has cut off from India.

Jammu and Kashmir map

Netflix now has business interest in India and they could have customised it. While technology poses challenges, it also poses solutions. For example, they could have used a dotted border and made the area illegally occupied by Pakistan as grey or uploaded a different variant of the map which is accessible when logged in from India.

In its episode called Bandersnatch of the hugely popular series Black Mirror, Netflix had shown how personalised and customised user experience is not entirely impossible.

The implementation of the rules requiring the publishers to show the official map has been lax. Last year, during the elections held in Pakistan, Indian Express had wrongly shown parts of Kashmir as part of Pakistan. Even The Quint had recently shown Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir as Pakistan territory. And despite being pointed out, Quint has continued to show the PoK as part of Pakistan’s territory.

Since even Indian publications appear non-serious about using the correct map of India, perhaps it’s understandable that players like Netflix won’t care when even The Quint gets away with it.

India rejecting the Rs 72,000 NYAY boondoggle would show the highest level of voter maturity

If I remember correctly, Lal Krishna Advani published his autobiography “My country, My Life” a few months before the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. At that time, Advaniji had already been anointed as the PM candidate of the NDA. I got hold of a copy as soon as I could and read it from cover to cover.

I had vaguely heard about the Emergency but I didn’t really know what it was. For obvious reasons, school history books, newspapers and magazines did not go into it. Come to think of it, notice how Indian textbooks teach history: with focus on the individual (read Nehru) rather than (supposed) founding principles of our democracy. Do you find words like “liberty”, “freedom of speech” etc anywhere in a school history book? No, of course not. Very different from the US where founding principles of the Republic are taught to all.

But I digressed. It was Advani’s autobiography that introduced me to the Emergency and how Indira Gandhi systematically demolished the basic pillars on which a free society stands: freedom of expression, habeas corpus, right to a fair trial, etc. Again, you will notice that these concepts and their importance are never actually explained in Indian schools. Rather we are made to memorize some of them as a list in Civics class, which is a “semi-subject” hurriedly squeezed in between History and Geography.

The most memorable point that Advaniji made in his book (according to me) is this: Look at the maturity of the Indian voter. They rejected the Emergency in the 1977 elections.

This may seem like an obvious thing to do now. But in 1977, India was a dirt poor country, with some of the lowest levels of literacy in the world. If you think about that era, many of the newly independent countries in Asia and Africa lost their democracies and became dictatorships at the time. Both internal and external factors were responsible for this. Internally, these newly independent countries were vulnerable to losing their democracies before democratic institutions had deepened sufficiently. On the external front, dictatorships suited both the reigning superpowers at the time. Both the USA and the USSR would rather deal with a fixed puppet regime in each country rather than deal with a merry go round of parties going in and out of power.

Perhaps this is what gave Indira Gandhi the courage to impose the Emergency, as she looked to join the ranks of all the other dictators in the so-called Third World (Aside: The term “Third World” actually has nothing to do with poverty. It is a Cold War term. The US and its allies are “First World”. The USSR and its allies were the Second. All the “battleground countries” where the two superpowers were vying for dominance were the “Third World”).

Except it didn’t work for Indira Gandhi. Indians showed that they were truly and remarkably different from the rest of the world. You can see the compromised intellectuals of that era, like Shashi Tharoor, explain why he didn’t think democracy mattered.

Untitled.png

What does it mean when Shashi Tharoor says “Their bread is more important than my freedom“?

It means that he views freedom in itself as an elitist concept, something that an “intellectual” like him would perhaps care about. But not the masses, who are supposed to be all about bread and water. You know, the “cattle class”, the ones who are supposedly beneath discussing enlightened concepts like democracy. Those are supposed to be the playgrounds of diplomats, their children and the like…

But 1977 showed something special in the Indian spirit. It stunned the Tharoors of the world. With empty stomachs, the people of India voted for freedom. Freedom is not an elitist concept, Mr Tharoor. Just because your English is good doesn’t mean you actually understand the principles of the enlightenment. A common misconception though.

We Indians are different. You know history lasts a long time. At this moment, we may be a poor nation. Fortunes of nations go up and down. But inside we have the seeds of the civilization that once led the world. We proved that in 1977.

A similar thing could be happening right now, here in 2019.

People often worry that populism is the Achilles heel of democracy. What if somebody promises a direct bribe to the voter? Would he win an election?

Right here, right now, India is having the greatest experiment in the history of democracy. You could say democracy itself is on trial here.

The Congress has promised 72,000 Rupees every year to every poor person. Will the “poor” be swayed by it? Or will they realize that pie in the sky is always the most expensive kind?

When Congress first made this announcement, I will admit it. I thought it was all over for the BJP. Who would say no to free money? The smiles of the Gandhis on that day showed their enthusiasm. They thought they had the election locked up and in the bag.

But the weeks have rolled by and 72000 has all but disappeared from the narrative. It is stunning how little traction it got on the ground.

I guess it was a “mini Tharoor” moment for me. Did I assume that the vast majority of people are not smart enough to see through this boondoggle? Probably.

Of course, we cannot say anything for sure until the 23rd of May. But all signs point to the possibility that the vast majority of Indian voters have seen through this pyramid scheme, laughed at it and rejected it. In this, there would be a lesson for a lot of people, including me.

The biggest test of voter maturity in history is unfolding before our very eyes. Like 1977, it seems Indians are all set to show the whole world what we are made of. In this, we will set a precedent for free people everywhere. Dear humanity, you are welcome.

Exit Polls for 2014 General Elections: How accurate were they?

The 5th phase of the 2019 Elections is almost over and only two phases remain. The last phase of election will take place on 19th May, and after the end of official voting hours, TV News channels will get busy with exit polls.

Before the actual counting of votes on 23rd of May, the exit poll results will remain the top topic of discussion for the intervening period. In that context, it is perhaps a good time to revisit the Exit Polls that attempted to predict the results of the previous General Election in 2014.

The Exit Polls, then, like so many Opinion Polls in the run-up to the current elections, had predicted the NDA to emerge victorious in the elections. But none of them, with the sole exception of Today’s Chanakya, accurately predicted the extent of the NDA’s victory.

The NDA, eventually, won 336 of the 543 seats and the BJP secured 282 seats on its own. The UPA, on the other hand, won merely 60 and the Congress was reduced to its lowest ever tally of 44.

2014 Exit poll results

Today’s Chanakya came the closest with its prediction of 291 seats for the BJP and 340 for the NDA, overestimating BJP by 9 and NDA by 4. Others, such as Times Now, fell way short. Times Now predicted 249 for the NDA and vastly overestimated UPA’s numbers.

CVoter and Nielsen, too, made a respectable estimate, although a gross underestimation, with its prediction of 289 and 274 for the NDA respectively. Apart from Chanakya, everyone appears to have predicted the UPA to win somewhere close to 100 seats. That too was an overestimation.

Thus, it’s quite clear that there are vast differences between predictions about seats made in exit polls and actual results, although the exit polls predicted the final outcome of the election mostly correctly. Last time around, Opinion Polls were giving the NDA under 200 seats initially which eventually kept on increasing as the days progressed.

This time around the situation has been a bit different as almost all opinion polls expect the NDA to at least get near the majority mark even if they fail to get past it. Considering the expectations that were defied the last time around and the much surer footing on which BJP began its campaign for 2019, it appears the Modi-Shah duo might again defy expectations.
