UK: British PM Rishi Sunak attends Ram Katha recital by Morari Bapu at Cambridge University

On Tuesday, the 15th of August, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak attended the Ram Katha recital by spiritual Guru Morari Bapu at Jesus College, University of Cambridge. Currently, Morari Bapu is conducting his 921st recital, titled ‘Manas Vishwavidyalay,’ which began on the 12th of August and will end on the 20th of August.

Meanwhile, attending the Ram Katha, UK PM Sunak made a floral offering to Morari Bapu’s Vyas Peeth, chanting “Jai Siya Ram”. He also highlighted that when he was a Chancellor, he lit diyas outside during the auspicious time of Diwali.

Rishi Sunak is an ardent Hindu and the first Prime Minister of Indian descent in Britain. In the past, he has not shied away from his Hindu credentials despite vested interest groups attacking him for his religious beliefs. He has taken oath at the House of Commons on Bhagavad Gita since 2017. As a clear sign of deeply entrenched Hinduphobia in the UK and the world over, he has endured online hate for his Hindu roots and adorning Hindu symbols like the sacred thread or Kalava he wears on his hand.

Addressing the August gathering, Sunak said, “It is truly an honour and pleasure to be here today at Morari Bapu’s Ram Katha at the University of Cambridge on Indian Independence Day. Bapu, I am here today not as a prime minister but as a Hindu. For me, faith is very personal. It guides me in every aspect of my life. Being Prime Minister is a great honour, but it is not an easy job. There are difficult decisions to make, hard choices to confront and our faith gives me courage, strength, and resilience to do the best that I can for our country.”

He added, “For me, it was a wonderful and special moment to light diyas for Diwali outside 11 Downing Street back when I was Chancellor. And just like Bapu has a Golden Hanuman in his background, I am proud that a Golden Ganesha sits gleefully on my desk at 10 Downing Street. It is a constant reminder to me about listening and reflecting on issues before acting!”

He further stated that he was proud of his national as well as religious identity and is proud to be Hindu.

He recalled his earlier memories of childhood and growing up years in South Hampton. He pointed out that he used to visit his neighbourhood temple along with his siblings and would participate in rituals like havans, pujas, Artis, and the distribution of prasad with his family. He emphasised the value system enshrined in the Hindu way of life.

Sunak said, “Our values and what I see Bapu does each day of his life are the values of selfless service, devotion, and keeping the faith. But perhaps the greatest value is duty or seva, as we know it. These Hindu values are very much shared British values.”

UK PM further asserted that for him Lord Ram will always be an inspiration and said, “I leave here today remembering the Ramayana that Bapu speaks on, but also the Bhagavad Gita and the Hanuman Chalisa. And for me, Lord Ram will always be an inspirational figure to face life’s challenges with courage, to govern with humility, and to work selflessly.”

On the issue of leadership, he categorically stated that he aspires to lead in accordance with how our scriptures have taught leaders to lead.

PM Sunak concluded his speech by lauding Morari Bapu’s work citing the recently concluded Jyotirlinga Ram Katha Yatra that covered over 12000 kilometers.  Subsequently, he performed Aarti on stage.

In his opening remarks of the Ram Katha, Morari Bapu hailed Prime Minister Rishi Sunak both as the head of the nation and as an individual of Indian descent.

Acknowledging the fact that Sunak doesn’t typically accept gifts, Bapu presented him with a consecrated Shivlinga from Somnath as a token, a sacred offering from the Jyotirlinga Ram Katha Yatra.

0

In the evening hours of Tuesday (15 August), Haryana Police arrested gaurakshak Bittu Bajrangi in connection with an FIR that was filed on the 1st of August against him. It is being claimed that the action is linked with the anti-Hindu violence that erupted in Haryana’s Nuh on 31st of July.

According to Bittu Bajrangi’s neighbours, several police personnel in plain uniform raided Bittu’s residence in Faridabad. They entered his house and apprehended him.

A purported video of the said police raid on his residence is also going viral on social media.

Around 10 to 12 men are seen running toward a house in the viral video. The police personnel can be seen in civilian clothes and some seemingly have sticks or guns in their hand. Afterwards, they come out of the residence holding Bittu Bajrangi by his neck.

Speaking to the media, his neighbours narrated that suddenly a large number of policemen reached the street. Some had guns in their hands and some had sticks.

They claimed that some policemen tried to enter the neighbouring house, which was protested by the local residents. They added that afterwards, the policemen pushed the neighbouring woman away.

Narrating the incident, a woman stated that the policemen took Bittu Bajrangi by the collar and took him away.

According to some media reports, it is being claimed that Bittu Bajrangi is in the custody of the Tawdu Crime Branch. However, some of his neighbours and relatives expressed apprehension about the said incident.

Bittu Bajrangi’s neighbours stressed that the policemen did not give their full introduction. Some of them said that they are scared for Bittu as this time the method followed by the police was different.

According to another neighbour, Bittu Bajrangi had taken out a Tiranga Yatra a little while back before the incident unfolded. Apart from him, his younger brother and his wife were present in the house.

Nuh Shobhayatra Attack

On 31st July, a mob of hundreds of Muslim rioters attacked Hindu devotees participating in the Brijmandal Jalabhishek Yatra in Nuh, Mewat of Haryana. At least six people were killed as a result of the riots.

During the investigation into the riots, OpIndia accessed over 25 FIRs and complaints that provided a clearer picture of what happened during the violence. Based on information available via FIRs, complaints and witnesses, it appeared that the attack was pre-planned. OpIndia came across several videos posted two days before the Jalabhishek Yatra instigating Muslims against Hindus.

Muslims have claimed the riots happened because of Bajrang Dal activist and Gau Rakshak Monu Manesar. Old videos of Manesar were circulated to instigate Muslims saying he was going to Nuh on that day. The video that was mostly circulated was from October 2022. Detailed reports can be checked here.

Furthermore, a cyber crime police station was attacked in Nuh. Police officials were injured. Home guards were killed. The rioters first shot one of the Bajrang Dal activists Abhishek, then his throat was slit and his head was crushed leading to his death.

Virat Kohli calls out Times of India for publishing fake news about him building a cricket pitch in his new Alibaug farmhouse

On Tuesday, August 14, Virat Kohli slammed the Times of India for publishing ‘fake news’ about his plans to build a cricket pitch inside his farmhouse in Alibaug, which is being constructed at the moment.

The ace cricketer shared a screenshot of the news report by TOI on his Instagram story and captioned it, “Bachpan se jo akhbaar Padha hai, wo bhi fake news chaapne lage ab (The newspapers which I have read since childhood, have also started publishing fake news).”

Screenshot of Virak Kohli’s Instagram story

Kohli’s response came after the Times of India had on Tuesday, published a report with claims that the former India captain was keen on having a cricket pitch on his lavish farmhouse. The report published on August 15 was headlined, “Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli to build a cricket pitch at Alibaug farmhouse: Report.”

The media house also posted the same news on its official Twitter (now X) handle.

TOI reported, quoting the daily newspaper Mid-Day, that Virat was keen to have a cricket pitch on the property. The cricketer has, however, set the record straight about the report calling it ‘fake news’.

Reportedly, Virat and his actress-wife Anushka Sharma purchased eight acres of land in Alibaug, a coastal town situated near Mumbai, which cost them a whopping Rs 19.24 crore. Now, according to reports, after obtaining all the necessary permissions from the local bodies, the construction work has kick-started on the plot and is in full swing. The couple had recently visited their property at Alibaug to check on the details of the construction of their farmhouse.

According to media reports, this is the second property Kohli had bought in Alibaug. Prior to this, the veteran batter of the Indian team had paid a stamp duty of Rs 36 lakh for the transaction of his 2,000 sq ft villa in Alibaug that cost him Rs 6 crore.

Notably, Virat Kohli is very active and vocal on social media. Last year, on October 31, cricket Virat Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma shared on the social media app Instagram that a video of Kohli’s hotel room has been leaked online. Kohli shared the leaked video and expressed disappointment over the matter, as he wrote, “I understand that fans get very happy and excited seeing their favourite players and get excited to meet them, and I’ve always appreciated that. But this video here is appalling, and it’s made me feel very paranoid about my privacy. If I cannot have privacy in my own hotel room, then where can I really expect any personal space at all?? I’m NOT okay with this kind of fanaticism and absolute invasion of privacy. Please respect people’s privacy and not treat them as a commodity for entertainment.”

Kohli was last spotted playing during the West Indies tour when he participated in two Test matches and one ODI. In Trinidad’s second Test match against West Indies, the ace player broke his streak of overseas centuries. Kohli played the first ODI in the Caribbean as well but didn’t come out to bat during the match.

50 left-liberals, ‘journalists’, actors, former judges and Urban Naxals come out in support of NewsClick over Chinese funding scandal

On 14th August, 50 left-liberals, former judges, controversial journalists and pro-naxals came together to support the online news portal NewsClick which is facing serious criticism and action from the Government of India over receiving funding from a US tycoon under scanmer for propagating Chinese propaganda.

A Google form seeking support from people from “prominent backgrounds” is being circulated among the left liberals. The form contains a statement that has been mentioned by several mainstream media portals in their reports. In the statement, the group of 50 so-called civil society members took “strong exception” to the accusations levelled against NewsClick and its founder and editor-in-chief, Prabir Purkayastha based on a New York Times report.

A snippet of the Google Form was shared by X (formerly Twitter) user Vasudha. She wrote, “Spotted a Google form rallying support for #NewsClick the news outlet under scrutiny for alleged links to China & compromising India’s sovereignty. The Hindu, The Wire, JNU professors – Agencies & GoI should look into the signatories to this form, as some names raise eyebrows!”

They claimed that the NYT report did not allege any violation of law by the portal and argued that the portal has provided “critical coverage of government policies and actions and their adverse impact on the lives of millions of our countrymen and women, focusing particularly on the struggles of the most oppressed and exploited sections of our society, its workers and peasants.” Furthermore, the statement claimed NewsClick played a role in highlighting “people’s movements of all hues fighting for social justice”.

Calling the action and criticism against NewsClick “hounding”, they claimed it was an attack on the “freedom of expression enshrined in our Constitution” and “on the conscientious role of independent journalism in a democracy to inform its readers about the government’s failings and to hold the government accountable”.

They claimed that media is now corporate-owned and independent journalism free of its influence hardly exists. “It is all the more unfortunate that a vicious media trial is being staged although the investigation into the allegations brought against Newsclick is in court,” they added.

The list of those who have expressed their solidarity with NewsClick includes John Dayal former Editor, N Ram, former editor-in-chief of The Hindu Group, Sidhharth Varadarajan, founding editor of The Wire, actor Ratna Pathak Shah, actor Naseeruddin Shah, Ritu Menon, MK Venu, Founding Editor of The Wire, and many others.

Sidhharth Varadarajan is the founder of propaganda left-leaning portal The Wire. Varadarajan is famous for his anti-BJP stand and his so-called news portal often comes under fire for dubious and fabricated stories. For example, The Wire had to pull down stories on Meta and Tek Fog after it was revealed that the “evidence” they provided was fabricated and false. Our reports on Varadarajan can be read here.

John Dayal is a Christian pro-naxal activist who had extended support to notorious terrorists like Yasin Malik and others. In 2019, he had said he would consider Yasin Malik a murderer only if the courts tell so. There was ample evidence including Malik’s statement on television that he had killed IAF officials and other innocent Hindus in the valley. Our reports on Dayal can be read here.

MK Venu is the founding editor of The Wire. He is known for making controversial statements. For example, in 2019, he called chants of Jai Shri Ram “provocative”. He and Varadarajan came under the radar for getting paid Rs 15,000 per appearance on Rjaya Sabha TV. Total payments made to Venu for appearing on a Government-funded broadcasting channel was around 33 lakhs spread over a few years. Such payments were made under former Vice President Hamid Ansari and it was stopped when former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu took charge. An inquiry was ordered to look into such expenditure. Our reports on MK Venu can be checked here.

OpIndia cannot, however, independently establish the identities of the signatories to the form condemning the Centre over action against NewsClick.

The NewsClick controversy

On 5th August, The New York Times published a detailed article, revealing the ties of an American businessman with the Chinese government and his financial support to an Indian leftist propaganda outlet named NewsClick.

According to the US-based newspaper, a millionaire named Neville Roy Singham has been funding several news publications worldwide (including India) to peddle Chinese propaganda.

“What is less known, and is hidden amid a tangle of nonprofit groups and shell companies, is that Mr Singham works closely with the Chinese government media machine and is financing its propaganda worldwide,” the article stated.

The New York Times pointed out that Singham has successfully disseminated Chinese government talking points under the pretext of ‘progressive advocacy’ in countries such as India, Brazil, South Africa, and the United States.

During its investigation, the American newspaper found that Neville Roy Singham had financed an India-based leftist propaganda outlet named NewsClick. It noted that the news outlet had repeated the talking points of the CCP in the past.

“In New Delhi, corporate filings show, Mr Singham’s network financed a news site, NewsClick, that sprinkled its coverage with Chinese government talking points. “China’s history continues to inspire the working classes,” one video said,” noted The New York Times.

At least 55 people have lost their lives in Himachal Pradesh after heavy rainfall wreaked havoc in the State triggering landslides, cloudbursts and blocked roads.

Earlier in the day, Sukhu said the toll is likely to go up and said that Solan, Shimla, Mandi, and Hamirpur are among the worst-affected districts in the state.

“Around 55 people have lost their lives in the state till now. The death toll might go up. Restoration work is being done on a war footing. Chandigarh-Shimla 4-lane highway along with other arterial roads has been opened,” CM Sukhu said.

0

Pune Police has booked the renowned Ukrainian singer Uma Shanti for insulting India’s national flag during a concert at a club in Mundhwa. The incident occurred on Sunday (August 14) night and was recorded on camera.

According to senior police inspector Vishnu Tamhane, Shanti and the organizer Kartik Morein have been named as accused in the FIR and legal proceedings have been started against them.

The FIR stated that Shanti was dancing on the stage holding the tricolour in both her hands and later she threw the flags towards the audience.

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat ruled out of Asian Games 2023, to undergo knee surgery

0

Vinesh Phogat, an acclaimed Indian wrestler, withdrew from the Asian Games 2023 due to a knee injury she sustained on August 13. On Tuesday, August 15, announcing the news on Twitter (X), the wrestler said that the procedure will take place on August 17. “A couple of days ago, I injured my knee in training. After doing the scans, doctors said surgery is the only option for me. I will be undergoing surgery on August 17 in Mumbai,” she said.

Vinesh will now be replaced by Antim Panghal, who won the 53 kg trials, on India’s Asian Games team. The 19-year-old is in Jordan to take part in the U-20 World Championship.

The gold medalist from the 2018 Asian Games expressed her extreme disappointment at not being able to defend her title in this edition, which will be held in Hangzhou beginning on September 23.

“I will be undergoing surgery on 17th August in Mumbai. It was my dream to retain my Asian Games Gold medal for India which I won in 2018 at Jakarta. But unfortunately, this injury has ruled out my participation now. I have informed concerned authorities immediately so that the Reserve player can be sent to the Asian Games.

I would like to request all the fans to continue supporting me so that I can make a strong comeback on the mat soon and prepare for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Your support gives me a lot of strength,” a two-time gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games and a bronze medalist at the World Wrestling Championships added.

Reports also mention that Vinesh won’t be able to participate in the World Championships, whose trial is scheduled to take place in Patiala on August 25 and 26. The decision by the ad hoc tribunal to exempt Vinesh and Bajrang Punia from the Asian Games trials caused a significant uproar, with the bulk of the wrestling community opposing the action.

In an attempt to have the direct admissions given to Vinesh and Bajrang Punia for the Games overturned, Panghal and Sujit Kalkal (the trial winner in Bajrang’s 65kg category) had Vinesh and Bajrang Punia appear in court. However, the High Court had previously rejected their plea.

After that, the IOA-appointed commission decided not to grant any wrestlers an exemption for the Worlds trials. However, Vinesh and Bajrang had not formally declared their intention to compete at the World Championships.

It is important to note that Vinesh Phogat was at the center of the wrestler’s protest against former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh which began in January this year. The wrestlers including Bajrang Punia and Sakshee Malik alleged that Singh had assaulted the female wrestlers. Two FIRs were registered against Singh on the complaint of seven female wrestlers, including one allegedly minor wrestler. Singh was booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and POCSO Act. However, recently it was reported the minor wrestler withdrew her statement in front of the magistrate and recorded a new one under Section 164 of the CrPC.

However, on June 26, wrestlers called off the protest after IOA granted exemption them from trials. The protesting wrestlers announced that since the cases against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh are in court and a charge sheet has been submitted, they would keep their fight on, but in court, not in the streets.

The World Championships, which are set to begin on September 16, will serve as the opening round in the 2024 Paris Olympics qualifying process.

Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren skips Enforcement Directorate’s summons in land grabbing case, cites ‘busy schedule’

On Monday (14 August) Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren did not appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the state capital, Ranchi. He skipped the ED summons for questioning in connection with an ongoing money laundering case that pertains to the fraudulent sale of land parcels. Citing a busy schedule, the Jharkhand CM has sought more time from the central agency, people aware of the development said.

According to media reports, a staff member from the Chief Minister’s Office came to the regional office of ED and submitted a sealed envelope. Speaking to the media, he claimed that he was not aware of the contents of the letter.

However, a source said, “The CM in the letter alleged that he was being targeted for not being aligned with a political party at the Centre”. The source added that the CM has asked the central agency to withdraw the summons asserting that his assets are ‘licit’.

However, neither the chief minister nor his office could confirm this. According to media reports, Jharkhand CM has conveyed to the ED that he was unable to visit their office owing to his ‘busy schedule’.

Speaking on the issue, a JMM leader said, “The chief minister has not sought any specific time period in response to the summon. In general, he has informed the agency that he can’t visit their office on August 14 due to his busy schedule in the next few weeks, including Independence Day celebrations, nomination, and campaigning for Dumri assembly by-elections. He is ready to otherwise cooperate in whatever other means they want to. If they send another summon, he would take a decision as per legal advice.”

Earlier, on the 8th of August, the ED had issued him a summon and asked him to depose before the ED office in the state capital. The agency called him for questioning in connection with a land scam case.

Reportedly, his name was mentioned in the statements of businessman Vishnu Agarwal and Revenue Sub-Inspector of Bargain Circle Bhanu Pratap Prasad. He will be questioned in connection with the land in Bariatu.

While in ED custody, ED interrogated Vishnu Aggarwal who is the director of Nucleus Mall. During interrogation, he revealed the name of Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

The ED is currently probing more than a dozen land deals. These include the once related to defence land, wherein a group of mafia, middlemen, and bureaucrats allegedly colluded to fabricate deeds and documents as old as 1932. However, they were caught because of acting too clever by half. Later, it was found that those names of districts were written on the addresses of these documents that were curved out at some later years and many other such misdeeds. Around 13 accused, including suspended IAS officer Chhavi Ranjan, have been arrested in the case.

AFSPA will be completely lifted from Assam, assures CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

On the occasion of India’s 77th Independence Day, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) would be completely lifted from Assam.

While speaking about the matter on Tuesday (August 15), he said, “In Assam, the AFSPA has been scrapped from many districts already. The law and order situation of the state has improved largely and soon the Act will be completely lifted from the entire Assam.”

“Before our government came to power, previous governments had requested the Centre to extend AFSPA 62 times,” Sarma hit out at the previous regimes. He also informed that over 8000 militants in the State have been integrated into mainstream politics through 4 peace accords, signed during his tenure.

The Assam CM added that massive administrative changes would be undertaken in the State within 1 month. “Sub-districts will be formed in each constituency. All the important departments will be within these sub-districts. There will be one additional deputy commissioner in each sub-district.”

Earlier in May this year, Himanta Biswa Sarma reiterated his aim of making Assam free from the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and said that the state government is working towards it.

What is AFSPA

Armed Forces Special Powers Act is a legislation of the Parliament of India that grants special powers to the Indian Armed Forces to maintain public order in “disturbed areas”.

It empowers security forces to conduct operations anywhere and arrest anyone without any prior warrant. It also gives a certain level of immunity to the security forces if an operation goes wrong.

According to the Disturbed Areas Act of 1976, once declared ‘disturbed’, the area has to maintain the status quo for a minimum of three months.

Dainik Bhaskar falsely claims an Indian Air Force plane crashed in Nigeria, later deletes X posts without explanation

On 15th August, the Hindi newspaper Dainik Bhaskar published a post on X claiming that an MI-171 helicopter of the Indian Air Force crashed in Nigeria leading to the death of 26 soldiers and leaving eight as injured. The post was published on X at 11:52 AM. Dainik Bhaskar published a photograph of a crashed aircraft with the tweet insinuating it was from a recent incident.

After less than 15 minutes, it published another tweet claiming an Air Force spokesperson said MI-171 Helicopter flew from Jungeru on Monday and crashed during a rescue mission. Though it does not use “Indian Air Force” in the text it uses the hashtag “#IndianAirForce”.

Now-deleted post by Dainik Bhaskar. Source: X (formerly Twitter)

There was a link in these posts that was redirected to the report of a helicopter crash in Nigeria. Interestingly, in the report, there was no mention of the Indian Air Force. The report noted that AFP reported 23 soldiers including three officers and 3 JTF died in the crash. It was taking 11 dead bodies and 7 injured from the conflict zone. It has been reported that the helicopter crashed due to firing by the assailants with whom the security forces were fighting.

Soon after the fake posts, the government’s fact-checking agency PIB Fact Check refuted the claims and said the posts by Dainik Bhaskar were fake. It categorically said that the crashed helicopter was not of the Indian Air Force.

OpIndia reverse-searched the image used in the first tweet. We noticed that the image was almost five years old. It was clicked on 4th October 2018 by photographer Philip Ojisua for The Guardian.

Image in the first post by DB was from 2018 crash. Source: Guardian

The photograph was of one of the two Nigeria Air Force F-7NI jets that crashed after a mid-air collision in Katampe Hills in Abuja.

The photograph in the second tweet was also not an Indian Air Force helicopter. It was a MiL-17 with the Russian Aerospace Forces and the photograph was picked up from Wikipedia. The photograph was clicked by Russian Military Photographer Vitaly V Kuzmin and uploaded in August 2015 on Wikipedia.

The photograph in the second tweet is from 2015. Source: Wikipedia

Dainik Bhaskar deleted both tweets after PIB’s rebuttal. However, they later shared a corrigendum, admitting their mistake.

“On August 15, 2023, in a social post related to the helicopter accident of the Nigerian Air Force, it was mistakenly written that the helicopter belonged to the Indian Air Force. No helicopter of the Indian Air Force has crashed in Nigeria. Dainik Bhaskar team regrets for this mistake”, they wrote in the post and added a link of their corrected article.
