‘Headline contradicted by the reporting’ – Meta official calls out Washington Post for a misleading report on job cuts in Meta

0

On February 22, Meta’s Communication head Andy Stone called out Washington Post for publishing a report with a misleading heading. In a series of tweets, Stone said that the story published by the Washington Post itself contradicted its headline, and the headline also differed from previous reporting by the same publication.

Following the tweets by Andy Stone, Washington Post edited the headline of the story later. Initially, the heading read, “Meta plans to cut thousands of jobs after CEO predicted no more layoffs”. The story was published at 10:10 AM local time.

At around 11 AM local time, Andy stone called out WaPo on Twitter, and at 11:36 AM local time, the title of the story was changed to “Meta could cut thousands of jobs, after CEO predicted no more layoffs”. Regarding the content, the story remained the same after the update, with minor corrections to the format.

In his tweets, Stone shared a statement issued by Mark Zuckerberg in November 2022, where he refused to rule out further job cuts at Meta. Replying to an employee on the possibility of further cuts, he had said that though the company did not have plans for additional layoffs in the following weeks, he could not “promise anything”. A total of 11,000 people were let go from the company, 13 per cent of the total workforce.

Further, in January 2023, Washington Post quoted Zuckerberg saying, “We closed last year with some difficult layoffs and restructuring some teams. When we did this, I said clearly that this was the beginning of our focus on efficiency and not the end.” He was talking to the investors. Notably, WaPo also mentioned that earlier in January, Zuckerberg proclaimed that 2023 would be the year of efficiency and promised the investors he would trim the middle management. Furthermore, he promised the investors to speed up the company’s decision-making process and hinted at the possibility of more job cuts.

Despite this, the original headline of the report by the Washington Post claimed that Zuckerberg had predicted there there will no more job cuts in Meta.

Washington Post’s report discussed the possibility of job cuts though the tech giant has not confirmed it. Quoting an unnamed person “familiar” with what is happening inside Meta, WaPo claimed that the company plans to push some leaders to lower positions and flatten the management layers between Zuckerberg and company interns. Quoting the same person, WaPo claimed Meta is considering more traditional cuts that may spread across company divisions worldwide over months.

‘Modi teri kabar khudegi’: Pawan Khera, Congressis chant at Delhi airport tarmac

On 23rd February 2023, Pawan Khera and other Congress leaders raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying “Modi Teri Kabar Khudegi” calling for his figurative death as a politician.

In this video, Congress leaders chanted “Modi Teri Kabar Khudegi”. Pawan Khera, Randeep Surjewala and other leaders are seen in this video. Pawan Khera was stopped from boarding the plane as the Assam police had requested to stop him. This came after Himanta Biswa Sarma had said, “Make no mistake- pathetic remarks by courtier Pawan Khera on PM’s father have blessings of the top levels of Congress, which is full of entitlement and disdain against a person of humble origins being PM. India will not forget or forgive these horrible remarks of Congressmen.”

At 11:30 pm on Monday, Indian National Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera made the remarks against the Prime Minister at a press conference in Delhi. PM Modi’s full name is Narendra Damodardas Modi. Pawan Khera, while accusing Narendra Modi of favoring businessman Gautam Adani, called him Narendra Gautamdas Modi. He further said that his full name is Narendra Damodardas Modi but his actions are like Gautamdas (literally meaning a servant of Gautam). Pawan Khera essentially implied that PM Modi is serving the interests of Gautam Adani. Cases were registered by BJP leaders against the Congress spokesperson in Lucknow and Varanasi of Uttar Pradesh.

This is not the first time that the opponents of the BJP government in the center and various states have used the phrase of burying somebody while registering their so-called protests. Many other Islamists have also raised slogans to bury Hindutva in the past few years, especially during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in 2019 and 2020.

A complaint was lodged with the Aligarh police station regarding certain slogans that were chanted against Uttar Pradesh’s chief minister Yogi Adityanath at Aligarh Muslim University. The shocking slogan in the protest in AMU was ‘Yogi teri kabar khudegi, AMU ki dharti par’ meaning “Yogi, you will be buried in the AMU’s soil”. Similarly, AMU students had raised slogans during the anti-CAA protests saying Hindutva, Savarkar, etc. will be buried in AMU.

Now, Pawan Khera and other Congress leaders have raised slogans against Pm Narendra Modi at the Delhi airport terminal saying Modi Teri Kabar Khudegi.

Gaddar.. Munafiq.. Bikaoo Musalman.. Yazid ki aulaad : Islamists abuse Muslim leaders for praising PM Modi and his work for Muslim community

On Wednesday, leaders of several Muslim organizations showered praises on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking several steps for the welfare of the largest minority community in India. The Muslim leaders said that the Indian government led by PM Modi abolished Triple Talaq and is the only one who has thought of taking steps the empower Muslim women.

The leaders were speaking at the ‘All India Minority Conclave – Role of Minorities in Amrit Kaal’ event organized by the NID Foundation. The president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Organization of India, Tariq Ahmad, discussed the necessity of abolishing triple talaq and pointed out that Islam does not support the practice either.

“Islam also does not accept the practice of triple talaq. Ahmadiyya Muslim Community does not entertain this from the beginning. So this step of PM Modi’s government is a good step. This is a good step towards women’s empowerment. A very good step has been taken to give status to the women who used to be deprived. We respect this initiative,” he said.

Further, Dr. Faiyaz Ahmad Fyzie, author, columnist, and Pasmanda social activist stated that PM Modi was the first secular Prime Minster India has ever got. “He talked about justice in the Muslim society, the Pasmanda issue, about our suffering, he talked about our upliftment considering us as citizens of the country and not as Muslims. So I understand that till now he is the first Prime Minister who has talked about our sorrow and pain,” said Fyzie.

“India is a democratic country in which there is a rule of democracy and the constitution was being violated for the last many years, women were being harassed, especially Muslim women. The decision taken by Modi ji in the interest of Muslim women was definitely not only welcome but also commendable and was a good step taken from the point of view of providing justice,” added Sufi Md. Kausar Siddiqui, National President, Sufi Khanqah Association.

The video of the praises showered on PM Modi by the Muslim leaders at the NID Foundation event went viral over the internet. The video, however, was not welcomed by Islamists who slammed the Muslim leaders and scholars for praising PM Modi. Some netizens even used abusive language for the Islamic scholars, calling them ‘gaddar’ (traitors) while others indicated that they were given money to speak well about PM Modi.

One of the Muslim netizens mentioned that the Islamic scholars who lauded PM Modi were ‘munafiqeen’ (a religious hypocrite) and indicated that the scholars only pretended to follow Islam but were acting against it. Netizens also used abusive words for the scholars calling them ‘haram**or’.

Meanwhile, one of the netizens also stated that the scholars praising Modi had lost their minds and called them ‘Yazid Ki Aulad’. It is important to note here that Yazid I was the second caliph of the Umayyad Caliphate and he is said to have ordered the killing of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad. Yazid claimed that he was the successor of the Prophet which led to his appointment as the first hereditary successor to the caliphate in Islamic history.

Several Islamists revolted against the hereditary appointment, including Imam Hussain who left for Kufa in Iraq to lead a revolt against Yazid. Reportedly, Hussain is said to have been killed by supporters of Yazid and Ibn Ziyad. Later, the leader of a caliphate based in Mecca,  Ibn al-Zubayr, proposed to change the caliph. He was supported by several Muslims from Medina. It is said that Yazid then happened to send an army to suppress Medina residents.

Shia Muslims believe that Yazid is the main perpetrator of the tragedy of Karbala. They also believe that he was an illegitimate ruler given records of his attack on Medina. The Battle of Karbala has divided the Muslims into two sections of beliefs even today. Sunni Muslims claim that Hussain was killed by Kufans (housing Shias) and that Yazid wanted no bloodshed. It is Ibn Ziyad and Kufans (Shias) who led the attack killing Hussain.

Coming back to the present time, several Islamic leaders praised PM Modi for abolishing triple talaq and ensuring empowerment of the Muslim women. On May 18, 2017, the Supreme Court declared Triple Talaq unconstitutional. The Modi administration maintained that the elimination of Triple Talaq would improve Muslim women’s socioeconomic, constitutional, and basic rights.

Iranian human rights activist shares news of vigilantes hitting a young girl on the face for not wearing hijab, fact-checkers claim news is misleading

On Tuesday, February 22, a video went viral on social media wherein a young girl can be seen sitting on the roadside crying inconsolably. Blood is oozing out of her nose and her clothes are also covered with blood. According to Twitter users, the little girl was hit brutally on her face for not wearing a hijab. The incident reportedly happened in Iran.

Two women are also seen in the video assisting and comforting the girl.

The Iranian journalist and activist Masih Alinejad shared the news via her Twitter handle here.

Soon, the video of the little girl went viral with several Twitter users commenting on the same.

“Little girl bleeding after getting hit in Iran. Her fault? She didn’t wear Hijab. “Hijab is a choice” is the biggest scam of our times,” wrote popular Twitter user Monica Verma, condemning the brutal act.

According to information shared on the microblogging site Twitter, the girl was allegedly named Sara Shirazi, an elementary school student. As per the viral claim, she was hit by a female named Razia Haft Baradaran while she was on her way to school.

As per the online claims, Sara Shirazi was not only beaten up but her family was also threatened with a fate similar to that of Mahsa Amini if they protested or approached the media.

Many Twitter users reacted angrily, denouncing the inhumane act to beat up such a young girl over hijab.

Another Netizen questioned the stoic silence of so-called human rights advocates who frequently lecture others on women’s rights and empowerment.

Meanwhile, fact-checkers have claimed that the viral video is misleading and it is an old report from the Persian news portal Saheb Khabar and Bartar Inha.

As per dfrac, the Farsi report said, “The girl was injured yesterday afternoon in Isfahan’s Khaneh neighborhood after school closed in a fight between two students. Later, the mother of a student started arguing in defense of her child and pushed the girl. The mother was arrested yesterday afternoon in the presence of police officers and is now out on bail.”

Apparently, the girl’s injuries had nothing to do with the hijab issue and the injuries she suffered were due to an altogether different reason.

Did you know: Hungary has a ‘Stop Soros law’ to outlaw illegal immigration

0

Hungarian-American billionaire George Soros had recently courted controversy for falsely accusing the Modi government of colluding with the Adani Group. While he has drawn the wrath of Indians for eyeing a colour revolution in the country, it must be mentioned that he is equally unwelcome in his home country.

As per reports, the Hungarian government wanted to limit the power of George Soros, who is infamously known to create unrest in countries through his Open Society Foundation (OSF). PM Viktor Orbán is of the view that the billionaire is orchestrating a campaign to destroy Hungary via illegal immigration.

Orbán had famously said, “We are fighting an enemy that is different from us. Not open, but hiding; not straightforward but crafty; not honest but base; not national but international; does not believe in working but speculates with money; does not have its own homeland but feels it owns the whole world.”

Stop Soros law came into existence in 2018

In June 2018, Hungary’s parliament passed a set of laws criminalizing anyone who aided an illegal immigrant in seeking asylum. The legislation also limited the role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in asylum cases.

The law, commonly known as “Stop Soros,” stated that individuals or groups, who help illegal migrants obtain status to remain in Hungary, would face imprisonment. It was passed despite the objections raised by the European Union and human rights groups’ objections.

Additionally, the parliament passed a constitutional amendment stating that Hungary cannot accept an “alien population,” a rebuke to Brussels over its migrant quota plan. Prime minister Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party, which had a two-thirds majority in the chamber, proposed and passed the measures.

“The Hungarian people rightfully expect the government to use all means necessary to combat illegal immigration and the activities that aid it,” the then Interior Minister Sandor Pinter had stated.

Hungarian PM firmly against illegal immigration

In December 2021, Viktor Orbán stated that Hungary would not amend its strict immigration laws despite a ruling by the European Union’s top court claiming that the Central European country violated EU law.

The EU Court of Justice had ruled, “Hungary infringed EU law by criminalizing organizing activities in relation to the initiation of a procedure for international protection by persons not fulfilling the national criteria for granting that protection asylum.”

Orbán argued that the verdict was sabotaging the unity and future of the European Union. He stated that Hungary would continue to protect its borders and not change its laws, despite the possibility of incurring hefty fines.

in July 2022, the Hungarian Prime Minister said, “I am the only politician in the EU who stands for an openly anti-immigration policy…This is not a race issue for us, this is a cultural issue.”

“It happens sometimes that I say something in a way that can be misunderstood but …the position I stand for, is a cultural, civilization (based) stance,” he emphasized.

No guilt in association with Nazi Godfather: George Soros

Amidst the social media chatter around George Soros, a 1998 interview of the Hungarian-American billionaire with journalist Steve Kroft on ’60 minutes Australia’ has been doing the rounds on the internet.

At the very onset, Kroft noted, “When the Nazis occupied Budapest in 1944, George Soros’ father was a successful lawyer. He lived on an island in the Danube and liked to commute to work in a rowboat, but knowing there were problems ahead for the Jews, he decided to split his family up.”

He emphasized how Soros’ father bribed a government official to supposedly accept the billionaire as his ‘Christian Godson’ when he was a teenager.

Kroft noted, “While hundreds of thousands of Hungarian Jews were being shipped off to the death camps, George Soros accompanied his fake Godfather on his appointed rounds, confiscating property from the Jews.”

When he quizzed the billionaire about the event, Soros downplayed it by claiming he was a teen and that someone else would have done the same things anyway even if he refused to participate. It must be mentioned that the billionaire was 68 years old at the time of the controversial interview.

“You watched lots of people get shipped off to the death camps?” Kroft inquired. Soros calmly said, “Right, I was 14 years old, and I would say that that’s when my character was made…That one should think ahead, one should understand and anticipate events when one is threatened.”

The billionaire also responded with an affirmation when asked whether he accompanied his Nazi Godfather in confiscating Jewish properties. When asked if he had developed psychiatric issues on account of his involvement, he said that it created ‘no problem at all.’

George Soros categorically stated he had no guilt about his association with the man. “I could be on the other side or I could be the one from whom the thing is being taken away…but there was no sense that I shouldn’t be there,” he said casually.

“It is just like in markets, that if I weren’t there. Of course, I wasn’t doing it, but somebody else would be taking it away anyhow whether I was there or not,” he further added.

Towards the end, he asserted, “I was only a spectator. The property was being taken away. I had no role in taking away the property. I had no sense of guilt.

Jharkhand High Court grants bail to Aurangzeb, Jafar and Naushad who killed 70-year-old Malambika Sinha to loot her home

0

Malambika Sinha, a seventy-year-old woman Ranchi resident, was hacked to death around a year ago by Mohammad Aurangzeb, Mohammad Jafar, and Naushad Ansari. The unfortunate incident occurred on March 18 at Ashok Nagar road number four, Ranchi, Jharkhand.

Now, all three guilty have been granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court, startling many.

Background of the case

Malambika hired the three accused as painters for Diwali after they approached her for work during Holi. She unlocked the door and provided them with food, but they attacked her taking advantage of her complacency. She and an elderly maid were the only people at home.

The other two began pillaging the home as Aurangzeb slashed and stabbed her in the neck. They also stole her gold bangle and necklace she was wearing around her neck.

The old woman was attacked 15 times. She was found dead in a pool of blood by her shocked husband, Vijay Kumar Sinha, after the perpetrators fled the house. Afterwards, he lodged a complaint at the Argora police station.

Sinha, a retired State Bank of India employee, was well-known in the town for being actively involved in temple events. The murder led to a major outrage in the community.

According to police officials, “The criminals entered the bungalow of retired bank employee Vijay Sinha at around 12.15 pm on the pretext of seeking work. Their intention was to loot the house. They brutally murdered Vijay Sinha’s wife Malambika Sinha by stabbing her with a knife.”

Surendra Jha, the senior superintendent of police in Ranchi, convened an SIT and instructed that the case be resolved soon.

Their faces were recorded on camera as they were trying to run away. With the help of this, the police apprehended Aurangzeb first. Later, all three of the murder suspects were taken into custody by the police. Police found them carrying two knives and four cell phones that were utilized in the murder.

During interrogation, Aurangzeb confessed to the crime. He also admitted that he had already visited the deceased’s home and done some painting work there. He further claimed, that they escaped the victim’s house carrying four cellphones and watches. Naushad revealed that he had assisted his two partners in escaping.

It was revealed that the elderly woman was killed only for money. When she refused to give them anything, they attacked her and kill her.

Court’s decision is raising eyebrows

The defendants were granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court around a year after the incident. Aurangzeb, the primary accused, was also recently released, causing quite a stir.

In its order, the High Court said, “Heard the parties. The applicant, who is in custody since 25.03.2022, has approached this Court for grant of regular bail. The applicant is an accused of committing offence under Sections 394, 302 & 34 of the Indian Penal Code. It has been submitted by the counsel for the applicant that complete set of FIR along with its enclosure have been annexed with this bail application and there is no suppression on his part. Innocence of the applicant has been claimed and undertaking has been given for participation in the trial.”

The court continued, “It has been submitted that the one of the co-accused-Md. Naushad Ansari, has already been enlarged on bail by a Co-ordinate Bench of this Court. On the above basis, prayer for bail has been made. Learned counsel for the State has opposed the prayer for bail. Considering the above facts, the applicant, named above, is directed to be released on bail, on furnishing bail bond of Rs. 10,000/- (Rupees Ten Thousand Only) with two sureties of the like amount each to the satisfaction of the learned Judicial Magistrate, Ranchi in connection with Argora P.S. Case No. 84 of 2022, subject to condition that the applicant will submit self-attested photocopy of his Aadhaar Card and also submit his mobile number before the learned court below which he will always keep active and will not change it during pendency of this case without prior permission of the court.”

Sinha family’s reaction

The judgement has left the Sinha family perplexed and in tears. They placed the greatest trust in the judiciary, however they are flabbergasted by this verdict.

“We will go to the higher bench and shall fight till we get justice for our mother,” said Rohit Sinha, Malambika’s son.

Her old husband spent a few months in the US before coming back. He has been chasing after every possible lead to get justice for his dead wife. He has also endured tremendous agony as a result of the court’s ruling.

Rajasthan police releases new list of accused in Bhiwani case, leave out the names of Gau Rakshaks Lokesh Singla and Monu Manesar

Rajasthan police, which came under fire for its biased probe into the Bhiwani case, has reportedly dropped the names of Gau Rakshaks Lokesh Singla and Monu Manesar from the case. Notably, the Rajasthan police had charged five Gau Rakshaks in the murder of Junaid and Naseer, namely Rinku Saini, Lokesh Singla, Shrikant, Monu Manesar, and Anil.

According to reports, the police released a new list of eight other wanted suspects in this case, along with their images, at a press conference in Bharatpur. Lokesh Singla and Monu Manesar’s names are missing from this list. The new list now mentions the names of two accused from Nuh and six from different districts in Haryana, they said.

The Rajasthan police, in the press conference, claimed that Rinku Saini, one of the five Gau Rakshaks they named as accused in the case, confessed his crime.

‘Operation Loharu’ reveals Monu Manesar was nowhere close to the crime scene

Notably, the progress of Rajasthan Police’s investigation into the double homicide in Bhiwani had come to light in a sting operation by news TV9 Bharatvarsh. The sting dubbed, ‘Operation Loharu,’ revealed that the police had not found Monu Manesar’s location at the place where they had uncovered Junaid and Nasir’s skeletons.

Ram Naresh, Station House Officer (SHO), Gopalgarh, can be heard stating, “Monu Manesar’s location was not discovered there (at the spot). In the video, he asserted, Junaid (one of the two deceased cow smugglers) was a “wanted felon”.

Furthermore, it was revealed that the Gau Rakshaks who have been booked in the murder case of Junaid and Naseer were police informers. Three out of five named in the matter, Rinku Saini, Lokesh Singla and Shrikant, were police informers and regularly tipped police about cattle smuggling activities which is an organised crime in these areas. Reportedly, they also used to accompany Haryana Police during raids.

Hindu Mahapanchayat to support Monu Manesar

Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Bajrang Dal and other Hindu organisations called Mahapanchayat on February 21 to support Monu Manesar. He has extensively worked to protect cows from smugglers in Manesar and Mewat areas, the organisations stated. They added that the government is trying to frame Monu, who is innocent, and the Hindu organisations will build pressure to stop the government from doing so.

Meanwhile, Monu Manesar had also vehemently denied any involvement in the murders. He said he was in a Gurugram hotel on the day of the event. CCTV footage and other proof are also available confirming the same. Monu asserted that his name was being dragged into the controversy because of Bajrang Dal’s opposition to cow slaughter in Mewat.

The Bhiwani case

On February 17, the Rajasthan Police reached Haryana to investigate the Bhiwani case in which the charred dead bodies of Junaid and Nasir were recovered by the Haryana Police. Junaid and Nasir were cattle smugglers and belonged to Bharatpur. The family members of the duo alleged that five Bajrang Dal members named Mohit Yadav, Shrikant Pandit, Rinku Saini, and two other Gau Rakshaks abducted Junaid and Nasir and later burnt them alive in Haryana.

Based on the complaint filed by family members of the dead smugglers, the Rajasthan police reached Haryana and began the investigation. It barged into the house of Shrikant Pandit and detained two of his younger brothers named Vishnu and Rahul. According to Shrikant’s family, around 30-40 Rajasthan Police officers entered their house at 3:30 am and assaulted the alleged accused’s mother and his wife. VHP released a statement in which it has accused the Rajasthan police of a biased approach against the activists of Bajrang Dal and VHP.

Update: This report has been updated with recent information. The Rajasthan police has also issued a statement in the matter. The full report can be read here.

What is Delhi snooping scandal? As MHA grants sanction to prosecute Manish Sisodia, here is how AAP’s FBU worked to spy on political opponents

On February 17, 2023, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) authorized prosecuting Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia in an alleged Feedback Unit (FBU) snooping scandal. The prosecution has been authorized under section 17 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

MHA’s authorisation to prosecute Manish Sisodia in the Snooping scandal (Image via IANS)

This comes after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sought sanction to prosecute Sisodia after its preliminary investigation suggested that the ‘Feedback Unit was used to carry out ‘political snooping’ against the political rivals of AAP. CBI’s request to sanction the prosecution of Sisodia was approved by the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Delhi Vinay Kumar Saxena.

The Delhi LG wrote in his note that the seeds for the establishment of an extra-constitutional/extra-judicial body modelled after a private intelligence organization and answerable to a single person were planted at the inception.

Feedback Unit

After AAP won the election in Delhi in 2015, the vigilance division’s Feedback Unit was set up to keep the government updated on various activities taking place in multiple ministries, autonomous bodies, and institutions under the jurisdiction of the Delhi government.

The Arvind Kejriwal-led government established a ‘Feedback Unit’ after losing control over the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) in 2015, as per reports. Later in 2019, a two-judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising justices AK Sikri and Ashok Bhushan ruled that the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and by extension, the Centre will have jurisdiction over Delhi’s anti-corruption bureau.

In September 2015, the Kejriwal government established a Feedback Unit- an Extra Constitutional-Extra Judicial Intelligence Agency which became operational in February 2016. The FBU was staffed by 17 contract employees, the majority of them former officers of the Central Armed Police Forces and the Intelligence Bureau.

Diversion of funds to spy on AAP’s ‘political opponents’

Interestingly, funds of over Rs 1 crore were allocated to the FBU by Manish Sisodia who also heads the Vigilance Department of the Delhi government to carry out the ‘secret services’.

In 2015, the then LG Najib Jung formed a panel to probe into this FBU. The panel found the FBU was established without the necessary approval of the LG. Following this, LG Jung referred the matter to CBI.

In its finding, CBI noted that out of Rs 1 crore allocated to FBU for ‘Secret Service Expenditure’, only Rs 50,000 were used. CBI has accused Sisodia of diverting these government funds to carry out espionage against the political opponents of the Aam Aadmi Party, bureaucrats, members of the judiciary, etc.

In its Preliminary Enquiry (PE) report CBI stated that it analyzed reports prepared by the FBU between February 2016 and September 2016 and found that about 40% of the reports were on political intelligence. It stated that vigilance-related reports made up 60% of all reports. According to the CBI, the Feedback Unit’s illegal formation and operation resulted in a loss to the exchequer of about Rs 36 lakh. It is, however, unclear if the FBU is still operational or not.

The CBI claimed in the preliminary inquiry report that using FBU to this extent to gather political intelligence for the AAP or for its convener Arvind Kejriwal “can reasonably be interpreted to mean and constitute the obtaining of valuable things or pecuniary advantage, as gathering this information otherwise would have necessarily required spending money.”

‘Feedback Unit was operating in the private interest of AAP’

According to CBI, the FBU was operating for some covert goal that was not in the interest of the Delhi government but rather in the “private interest of the Aam Aadmi Party and Manish Sisodia,” who actively engaged in the unit’s formation.

LG Saxena has given the nod to file a case against Manish Sisodia as he heads the Vigilance Department along with officials and advisers to the government RK Sinha, Pradeep Kumar Punj, Satish Khetrapal, Gopal Mohan and Sukesh Kumar Jain. These officials were reporting directly to CM Arvind Kejriwal bypassing the Vigilance Department.

AAP’s defence

In a tweet, Manish Sisodia called the action ‘cowardly,’ adding that fabricating evidence to hurt opponents is a sign of weakness and cowards. “Many more allegations will be made against the Aam Aadmi Party as it grows,” tweeted the deputy chief minister of Delhi.

BJP demands Sisodia’s arrest

On Wednesday, the Delhi BJP asked that the CBI immediately arrest Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in connection with the snooping case and look into the involvement of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Virendra Sachdeva, the working president of the Delhi BJP, has called for an investigation into Arvind Kejriwal, the “real accused” in the snooping scandal.

Apart from the snooping scandal, Manish Sisodia is also under the scanner in the liquor policy case wherein cartelization and monopolies were taking place in the liquor trade under the Delhi government’s new liquor policy.

USA: Seattle Council passes anti-caste resolution singling out Hindus for additional legal scrutiny

On February 21 (local time), the Seattle City Council in USA passed Councilmember Kshama Sawant’s sponsored resolution to establish ‘caste’ as a protected category under the City’s non-discrimination policy. With the resolution, Seattle became the first City in the United States to acknowledge ‘caste’ as one of the reasons for discrimination. While those who supported the resolution celebrated the victory, Hindu organisations and leaders pointed out it would put the community under additional legal scrutiny.

Regarding the resolution, Hindu American Foundation (HAF) co-founder and Executive Director Suhag Shukla said in an official statement, “Throughout our two decades of existence, HAF has maintained that caste discrimination is wrong, violating core Hindu principles of the divine oneness of all beings. At the same time, we maintain that the singling out of South Asians and the addition of ‘caste’ to the non-discrimination policy violates the policies it now amends. The City of Seattle has voted to treat South Asians so that no other ethnic or racial community is treated under the guise of non-discrimination. It has voted yes to discriminating against ethnic minorities, repeating the ugliness of nativists in the state nearly a century ago.”

HAF added that by passing the resolution, Seattle had violated the equal protection and due process guaranteed to every person by the United States Constitution. Notably, as per the constitution, the state is prohibited from treating people disparately on the basis of their national origin, religion or ethnicity. The Foundation’s attorneys contended that the resolution would implement a vague, facially discriminatory and arbitrary category against the Hindus.

HAF Managing Director Samir Kalra said, “Seattle has taken a dangerous misstep here, institutionalising bias against all residents of Indian and South Asian origin, all in the name of preventing bias. When Seattle should be protecting the civil rights of all its residents, it is actually violating them by running roughshod over the most basic and fundamental rights in US law, all people being treated equally.”

HAF further noted that Councilmember Sawant claimed caste discrimination is “rampant” in the US. However, only Carnegie Endowment has done the only authoritative survey on discrimination against the Indian and South Asian communities in the country that noted that caste-based discrimination is rare in the US. The survey specifically debunked the methodology and findings of the dubious organisation Equality Labs, which was the base of Sawant’s resolution.

Ohio State Senator objects to the anti-Hindu ordinance

First Hindu and Indian State Senator of Ohio, Niraj Antani, criticised the ordinance passed by Seattle. He said, “I condemn in the strongest terms the ordinance passed by the Seattle City Council. Caste discrimination simply doesn’t exist now. Adding it to their non-discrimination policy is Hinduphobic and is a tool for those who are anti-Hindu use to discriminate against Hindus in America, India, and around the world. Instead of passing this racist policy, Seattle should be passing policies to protect Hindus from discrimination.”

The proposed amendment by Kshama Sawant

Two Councilmembers, Kshama Sawant and Lisa Herbold, proposed the amendment to the City Council Act. They proposed to introduce Section 22 against the so-called caste-based discrimination. Interestingly, the proposal document clearly showed it was targeted at Hindus and India. Calling it an international problem that affects over 250 million people, Sawant suggested that caste is “often associated with Hinduism and India”, but it “transcends religious and geographic boundaries, with caste-based discrimination showing up in Christian, Muslim, Sikh, and other religious communities” across South Asia, Southeast Asian and African communities, including Japan, the Middle East, Nigeria, Somalia, and Senegal.

She claimed that the caste system “travelled” with the individuals from the communities from the regions mentioned above to other countries and got embedded into those regions, including the United States. Despite being debunked by the authoritative survey that debunked the methodology used by Equality Lab’s propaganda, Sawant claimed in the proposal that the “experiences of caste-oppressed communities with discrimination has been growing in recent years”.

Interestingly, the Fiscal note of the amendment skipped using words like “Hinduism” and “India” and emphasised “South Asian Countries”. It read, “While caste is associated with the South Asian region, its existence can be found in diverse religious or ethnic groups in many regions, including diaspora communities like Seattle and the surrounding area. Lower caste individuals and communities can suffer discrimination based on their caste identity, and it is not clear that existing protections against discrimination based on characteristics like race, religion, national origin, or ancestry are sufficient. These communities have been historically marginalised in both countries abroad and in Seattle as a result of prejudice intact in local communities. This legislation will allow those subject to discrimination on the basis of caste a legal avenue to pursue a remedy against alleged discrimination.”

HAF’s Shukla, in a tweet, pointed out that the Council’s memo noted the caste-based law would cost the City $185,000 in the first year and $100,000 every year for the implementation. However, the question remained intact on the determination of the caste. There was no direction on how the caste of any individual would be determined. Will it be assigned by someone, self-determined or assumed? There was no clarity.

‘Biased and hateful’ – HAF debunks FAQ submitted by Kshama Sawant

In a detailed Twitter thread, HAF’s Shukla described how Sawant’s FAQ submitted to the Council was biased and hateful, targeting South Asians. Notably, Sawant admitted in her document that Seattle policy already bans discrimination based on nationality and ancestry. However, she failed to mention that her proposal violated those policies that she sought to amend by discriminating against a minority on the basis of origin and ancestry.

Suhag further pointed out that Sawant targeted South Asians based on a biased survey by a dubious organisation named Equality Labs. In the FAQs, Sawant pointed out that the data from Equality Labs showed that one in four caste-oppressed people cited physical and verbal assault and one in three faced education discrimination. She further claimed two in three faced workplace discrimination.

However, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace called out the survey on Indian Americans by Maari Zwick-Maitreyi, Thenmozhi Soundararajan, Natasha Dar, Ralph F. Bheel, and Prathap Balakrishnan titled “Caste in the United States: A Survey of Caste Among South Asian Americans (Equality Labs, 2018)” and said it “relied on a nonrepresentative snowball sampling method to recruit respondents. Furthermore, respondents who did not disclose a caste identity were dropped from the data set. Therefore, it is likely that the sample does not fully represent the South Asian American population and could skew in favour of those who have strong views about caste. While the existence of caste discrimination in India is incontrovertible, its precise extent and intensity in the United States can be contested.”

Equality Labs is an extremely prominent anti-Brahmin Caste activism group in the United States. Known for its disinformation campaign, Equality Labs has often made headlines for its anti-Hindu propaganda. OpIndia has covered the organisation in detail, which can be checked here.

Though it is considered taboo to talk about, it is abundantly clear from numerous reports that the SC/ST Act in India, which is aimed at securing the rights of the marginalised communities in India, is often misused to settle personal scores. How Seattle City is going to ensure that the law will not be used to target the Indian Diaspora living peacefully in the City to settle any personal score is unclear.

Govt officers of poverty stricken Pakistan forced to contribute 50% of their salaries to Turkey-Syria earthquake relief fund

Without any formal orders by the Pakistan government or the provincial governments, officers of the Balochistan government have found a fifty per cent cut in their salaries this month on the grounds that they are required to contribute to the Turkey relief aid, as per the report by the Asian Lite.

This comes at a time when the Pakistan government is witnessing a severe economic crisis amid allegations of corruption and coercion of being rampant in the country. The Asia Lite reported that Grade 19 to 21 officers in Balochistan have protested the unilateral salary cut, saying that they were already facing problems feeding their families, faced by a 33 per cent rise in prices of essential commodities. These salaries were their only source of income. They could not be deprived of their legitimate earnings without any consultation.

A Daily Intekhab report has said the officers have asked if other officers of other grades and provinces were also asked to contribute, or if this was a Balochistan Government diktat. They plan to appeal to the federal government with the suggestion that they could pay one or two days’ salaries, and be spared from the steep 50 per cent salary cut.

Despite severe economic stress, the Shehbaz Sharif Government is trying hard to return the gesture Turkey had made last year when Pakistan experienced nationwide floods. Nine aircraft sorties have been undertaken and 16 containers carrying 162 tonnes of relief material have been rushed so far. This gesture is not without its political sting, which shows Pakistan in poor light, the Pakistan-based publication reported.

Despite severe economic stress, the Shehbaz Sharif Government is trying hard to return the gesture Turkey made last year when Pakistan experienced nationwide floods. Nine aircraft sorties have been undertaken and 16 containers carrying 162 tonnes of relief material have been rushed so far, the Asian Lite reported.

Prime Minister Sharif had announced plans to fly to Ankara and express solidarity with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan when Turkey is mourning thousands of deaths. However, the Turkish Government requested that he postpone his visit since Ankara was very busy dealing with the calamity and the relief operations as per the media reports.

Some media reports have termed this as a ‘snub’ to Sharif who should not be wasting time, money and effort to show goodwill gestures when his own government is fighting a crisis.

While Sharif’s effort may be ill-timed or misplaced, there is no effort at all on the part of his principal critic, former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Imran Khan had admitted to keeping or buying over at concessional rates, expensive gifts he received from foreign hosts and guests when he was Pakistan’s prime minister. These gifts included an expensive wristwatch gifted by Saudi Crown prince Mohammed bin Salman. A case is before the court arguing that as per government rules, he should have deposited those gifts to toshakhana, the government’s depository since he received them in his official position.

Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi has been caught on secretly recorded audio clips asking a close aide of Khan to dispose of those gifts, and the latter did so in Dubai. The diamond-studded watch was sold for USD two million.
