FIFA announces suspension of AIFF: From Praful Patel’s sacking to losing Under-17 Women’s World Cup hosting rights, how it happened

On August 16, Federation International de Football Association (FIFA) suspended the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and cited ‘third party’ intervention as the reason.

In its official statement, FIFA said, “The Bureau of the FIFA Council has unanimously decided to suspend the All India Football Federation (AIFF) with immediate effect due to undue influence from third parties, which constitutes a serious violation of the FIFA Statutes.

The suspension will be lifted once an order to set up a committee of administrators to assume the powers of the AIFF Executive Committee has been repealed and the AIFF administration regains full control of the AIFF’s daily affairs.

The suspension means that the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022, scheduled to take place in India on 11-30 October 2022, cannot currently be held in India as planned. FIFA is assessing the next steps with regard to the tournament and will refer the matter to the Bureau of the Council if and when necessary. FIFA is in constant constructive contact with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in India and is hopeful that a positive outcome to the case may still be achieved.

India was supposed to host U-17 Women’s World Cup from October 11-30 this year. However, following the suspension, the chances of hosting the event now seem bleak.

Timeline of the events

Since May this year, a lot has happened in the world of Football in India that led to the suspension announced on August 16. Here is a timeline from the Supreme Court order ousting Praful Patel.

On May 18, 2022, the Supreme Court of India relieved Praful Patel from the post of AIFF President as he had completed the maximum permitted tenure of 12 years as per the Sports Code. However, as there were pending cases in the Apex Court regarding its constitution, fresh elections could not be held since the completion of his third term in December 2020. In May, the apex court appointed a Committee of Administrators (CoA) to manage AIFF. The CoA was also asked to draft the constitution for the same body.

On May 29, 20222, Dr SY Qureshi, a CoA member, announced that the new AIFF constitution would be in place by the end of September this year.

On June 11, 2022, a meeting was held between CoA and members of affiliated units to discuss the elections at AIFF at the earliest as per the national sports code, FIFA, and AFC statutes.

On June 21, 2022, a meeting was held between visiting FIFA-AFC team and CoA. A 12-member advisory committee was formed to oversee the day-to-day functionalities of AIFF. The committee was asked to send regular updates to CoA members for information and approvals.

On June 23, 2022, the FIFA delegation left with an assurance that the new constitution would be completed by July 31 and the elections would be held by September end.

On July 6, 2022, a meeting between CoA and a seven-member committee representing State Associations of AIFF was held to discuss the draft constitution.

On July 16, 2022, the final draft of the AIFF constitution was submitted to the Supreme Court for approval.

On July 18, 2022, it was reported that the state units of AIFF were not happy with some provisions in the final draft of the constitution. However, they were ready to find a middle ground in order to avoid any possibility of a ban by FIFA. Notably, state associations had written to FIFA that some clauses in the final draft of the constitution were “discriminatory and illogical.”

On July 21, 2022, the Apex court asked the state associations and CoA to file objections to the proposed constitution.

On July 26, 2022, FIFA recommended AIFF should have 25 per cent representation from the eminent player in the Executive Committee as co-opted members instead of 50 per cent as mentioned in the draft constitution. In a letter, it said, “Although we agree that players’ voice needs to be heard, we are also of the view that the importance of the existing members of the AIFF should not be undermined. To bring in 50 per cent of the members in the Congress structure is not a prudent idea, and the AIFF should seek to be more diverse in the future.”

On July 28, the Supreme Court set a date for hearing on AIFF elections to August 3 and mentioned that the priority would be hosting the Women’s Under-17 World Cup. Justice DY Chandrachud remarked that though the court could not finalize the entire committee, it could issue directions for the elections.

On August 3, 2022, the Apex court issued an interim order and asked AIFF to hold and conclude elections to ensure smooth hosting of the Women’s Under-17 World Cup in October 2022. The court approved a 27-day time for the election schedule. The court directed AIFF to hold elections to the executive committee by forming an Electoral College consisting of 36 representatives of state football associations and 36 eminent players.

On August 6, 2022, FIFA threatened the suspension of AIFF and cancelled the rights to host the Women’s U-17 World Cup, and cited third-party influence as the reason.

On August 7, 2022, CoA reassured FIFA that the process of setting AIFF in order was on track. It also slammed the ousted president Praful Patel for approaching FIFA to suspend the national body.

On August 11, 2022, it was reported that CoA had filed a petition in the Supreme Court accusing Praful Patel of “arranging” a letter from FIFA and AFC threatening a ban on India. CoA urged the apex court to ban Patel from “holding any football-related posts forthwith, including and not limited to positions in FIFA and AFC.” Notably, Patel is a member of the Executive Council of FIFA and Vice-President at AFC.

CoA said, “What is worse, and which is the primary cause for the present Contempt Petition, is the continuing central role of Mr Praful Patel, ex-President of AIFF, who has impliedly admitted to having arranged for the letter from FIFA-AFC and has conducted a meeting of the 35 Intervening Member Associations on August 6, 2022, with the express purpose of interfering with the proceedings of his Hon’ble Court.”

On August 13, 2022, the poll’s returning officer Umesh Sinha rejected the nominations of Veteran administrators Subrata Dutta and Larsing Ming as they had been on administrative posts for three terms already.

On August 15, 2022, FIFA informed the Sports Ministry of India about its opposition to the inclusion of individual members in the electoral college for the AIFF elections. Earlier in July, FIFA had expressed similar concerns.

Punjab AAP Minister defends presence at Red Fort, along with Deep Sidhu, during the Republic Day siege: What he said

Punjab Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar attempted to rationalize his presence at the Red Fort on January 26 last year during the Republic Day mayhem unleashed by so-called farmers protesting outside the borders of Delhi. Bhullar stated that during the farmers’ protest, he had reached the capital in his identity as a farmer’s son.

“Look, I am the son of a farmer. Every farmer and the son of a farmer went to New Delhi. I haven’t done anything wrong,” Bhullar said while justifying the video shared by the Congress leader Sukhpal Khaira that went viral on social media.

It is worth noting that Bhullar’s words came just a week after the Congress sought the resignation of the Punjab Transport Minister over a video of rioters storming the Red Fort on January 26, 2021.

On August 8, All India Kisan Congress chairman MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira and afterwards former Deputy CM Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa took to Twitter and shared a video of Punjab Transport Minister Laljit Bhullar and actor Deep Sidhu during the Red Fort siege. Khaira demanded a response from Aam Aadmi Party president Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann over the presence of Laljit Bhullar, along with Deep Sidhu, during the raising of the ‘Nishan sahib’ at the Red Fort. It should be recalled that the National Flag was also disrespected during the siege by Khalistanis.

Khaira cited AAP leaders’ conflicting actions, such as their Tiranga campaign on the eve of the nation’s 75th anniversary of independence and their silence on personalities such as Laljit Singh Bhullar who supported radicals in the name of the farmer protest.

On the other hand, Laljit Bhullar blasted Sukhpal Khaira and demanded that he should clarify if he was supporting his father, a known Khalistan proponent. “Sukhpal Khaira’s father has been demanding Khalistan. He should tell people about his father. First, you should clarify,” Bhullar said.

The mayhem in the national capital on January 26, 2021, caused by thousands of pro-Khalistanis, including the late Deep Sidhu, marked a turning ebb in Indian history when a religious flag was flown atop the national monument.

The violent protestors created a riot-like situation in which over 300 police personnel were injured, and properties worth crores were damaged. The rally was supposed to be a protest rally against the Agriculture laws named Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 which were passed in September 2020.

Jungleraj returns to Bihar? Convicted politician Anand Mohan seen holding a political meeting at home in Patna: Here is what happened

Days after CM Nitish Kumar deserted the BJP and joined hands with the RJD, a convicted politician named Anand Mohan was seen chilling at his home in Patna where he should be in jail.

The development has stoked fears about the possible return of ‘Jungle Raj’. The disgraced politician, who has been lodged at Saharsa jail, was brought to Patna on Friday (August 12) and produced before the civil court.

On his way to the Saharsa jail, he stopped at his residence in the Patliputra Colony of Bihar. Anand Mohan met his son Chetan Anand, and wife Lovely Anand, who happen to be members of the Rashtriya Janata Dal.

During the meeting, he also met some of his supporters. A picture of the meeting went viral on social media. This has raised questions about the working style of the Bihar police under the Mahagathbandhan government.

Following an uproar, Superintendent of Police (Saharsa) Lipi Singh informed that a total of 6 police personnel have been suspended in connection to the incident. She said, “Six Police personnel suspended. Department proceedings ongoing. Probe on jail’s role on. Action being taken.”

While speaking about the matter, District Magistrate (Khagaria) AR Ghosh said that a 3-member committee has been formed to probe the incident. He added that the committee is headed by the ADM.

“It’s a serious matter. It will be difficult to say anything until this is verified…If someone stays in a room reserved for someone else, it’s a matter of impersonation. If it’s found that security personnel were involved, action will be taken,” Ghosh continued.

On December 5, 1994, IAS officer G Krishnaiah was assaulted and lynched by a mob in the Gopalganj district of Bihar. Anand Mohan, reportedly, instigated the mob to attack the 35-year-old bureaucrat. Six people, including Anand and his wife Lovely, were charged in the case.

In 2007, the Patna High Court convicted Anand Mohan and sentenced him to death. This was the first time a politician was given the death penalty. His sentence was later reduced to life imprisonment in 2008. In 2012, Anand Singh appealed in Supreme Court to reduce the sentence, but his plea was rejected.

Lovely Anand and her son Chetan joined the Tejashwi Yadav-led- Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD), in September 2020.

Uttar Pradesh: Anganwadi worker gets ‘Sar Tan Se Juda’ threat from ‘Friends of ISI’ for distributing Tiranga, probe initiated

On August 15, a handwritten death threat note was found pasted outside an Anganwadi worker’s house in Buddhu Pad, Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh. The note read, “Annu, you seem happy over distributing Tiranga to every house. Now you must be beheaded.” It was signed as ‘Friends of ISI.’ The note was found pasted outside Arun Kashyap alias Annu Kashyup’s house by his son on Sunday morning. He informed Arun about the note, who immediately called the Police.

Arun works as a Confectioner, and his wife Shashi is an Anganwadi worker. He has three children, two sons and a daughter. They had distributed Tiranga under ‘Ghar Ghar Tiranga’ scheme on Saturday. In a statement, Arun said, “My son found the note. I immediately called the Police. I am scared of going out of the house. My son works in a school in Bijnor. He was also asking if he should go to work or not. My wife works at Anganwadi, so we distributed 1-2 flags in our colony as well. The threat came after that.”

After seeing the note, Arun informed Kiratpur Police Station. The Police have initiated a probe into the matter and investigated the note based on the handwriting to find out who wrote it. A case against an unknown accused has been registered by the Police.

Zee News report noted similar notes were pasted on several shops near Arun’s house. There was a handcart and a tea stall outside Arun’s house that had the notes pasted. These notes also had Arun’s name.

Following the threat letter issued allegedly by Pakistan’s ISI, Arun has been provided security. Two Police Personnel have been recruited outside his house. Superintendent of Police (SP) City, Dr Praveen Ranjan, said a case had been filed, and security had been provided to the victim. The Police are also checking CCTV footage from the area. Further probe is underway.

Just like every year, all the Swaminarayan temples under the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) celebrated Independence Day with great fervour and enthusiasm. However, this year the celebrations were extra-special as India completed 75 years of independence. As part of the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga‘ campaign of PM Narendra Modi, all the temples were flying the Tricolour proudly on top.

As part of the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ being celebrated across the country, BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham Gandhinagar held a special program to mark the occasion. The event was held in the presence of BAPS Sanstha’s International Convener Pujya Ishwarcharan Swami Ji. Several other Swamis from BAPS, Akshardham volunteers, and other devotees took part in the program.

The temple was tastefully decorated ahead of the celebration of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav

Devotees wearing Saffron, White, and Green caps recreated the National Flag on the premises of the temple. Pujya Swami Ji unfurled the Tricolour on this occasion, following which, all the seers and devotees present sang the National Anthem and Vande Mataram.

International Convenor of BAPS, Ishwarcharan Swami Ji was present on this occasion

Addressing the gathering, Ishwarcharan Swami Ji said, “It is a matter of great happiness that we have completed 75 years of independence and we are celebrating Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav to mark the occasion. We should remember our ancestors on this day who sacrificed their lives for freedom. We should also remember Param Pujya Pramukh Swami Maharaj who traveled around the world to promote our culture and traditions.”

Devotees wearing Saffron, White and Green caps recreated the national flag at the premises

Swami Ji also recalled how Shastriji Maharaj, the founder of BAPS, had met Mahatma Gandhi in 1930 during the freedom struggle and gave his blessings for the success of the movement.

While addressing the devotees, Swami Ji also supported the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign of PM Modi. He said that the national flag is a symbol of our pride, and we should all put up the national flag in our homes. He further said that the national flag is a symbol of our values, traditions, and rituals, and by displaying the national flag in our homes, we can feel the true sentiments of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’.

Karnataka: Communal tension erupts as Muslim youths try to replace Veer Savarkar’s poster with that of Tipu Sultan, section 144 imposed

On Monday (August 15), the Karnataka Police imposed prohibitory orders in the state’s Shivamogga district as communal tensions flared up after a group of Muslim youths removed the flex banner with the image of Veer Savarkar. Savarkar’s poster was put up as part of Independence Day celebrations and the Muslim youths tried to replace it with that of the Islamic tyrant Tipu Sultan. The incident happened at the Ameer Ahmed circle in the Shivamogga district in Karnataka.

Additionally, two men identified as Praveen Singh and Prem Singh were also stabbed by unidentified miscreants in two different places in the city. The former was stabbed in Ashok Nagar by bike-borne youths on his way home from Gandhi Bazar after shutting his shop, while another youth was stabbed in Upparakeri. Police are trying to ascertain whether these two incidents are linked to the Veer Savarkar flex banner controversy.

According to the Karnataka home minister, the stabbing incident was likely linked to the ongoing Savarkar poster row in Shivamogga. Speaking to India Today, the minister said, “One stabbing incident has happened in Shivamogga is what I’m told. Is it regarding the Savarkar photo issue, it seems like it. But yet to get full details.”

However, to avoid any further escalation, the police have imposed Section 144 in parts of the Shivamogga district, and shops have downed their shutters.

“We have imposed Section 144. Tension flared and so we resorted to lathicharge. We have tried to dismiss the crowd. We are verifying if he was stabbed over the same issue,” said Laxmi Prasad, a senior police officer in the area.

According to reports, on Monday, as part of India’s 75th Independence day celebration, a Hindu group placed Veer Savarkar’s poster at the Ameer Ahmed circle in Shivamogga. Tension erupted after a group of Muslim youths reached the circle and not only objected to the placement of Savarkar’s poster there but tried to remove it and replace it with that of Tipu Sultan.

This led to a verbal, and then physical altercation between the two groups. As the news spread, Superintendent of Police BM Laxmi Prasad and other senior police officials rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. Fearing an escalation, the police used a mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd. They also detained those who removed Savarkar’s flex. Hindu youths tried to put up the banner again at the circle but the police denied permission. Police also onfiscated the flex banner of Veer Savarkar.

Members of Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal staged a flash protest demanding to allow them to put up Veer Savarkar’s poster, but the police managed to bring the situation under control and dispersed the crowd.

To pacify the situation police put up the Tricolour in place of Veer Savarkar’s poster.

Amidst the ruckus, news emerged that the two youths namely, Praveen and Prem Singh were stabbed. The police are now investigating whether there is any link between the two incidents.

Karnataka Congress puts up posters of Islamic tyrant Tipu Sultan in Bengaluru to celebrate 75 years of Indian Independence

It may be recalled that yesterday, the Karnataka Congress had placed posters of the Islamic dictator Tipu Sultan in Bengaluru’s Hudson Circle and several other places to celebrate 75 years of Indian independence.

The posters were later allegedly damaged by some people as per some reports. The Karnataka Congress had put up posters of Tipu along with several freedom fighters across Bengaluru.

The Congress party protested the damage inflicted to the posters by unknown people. Talking to reporters, State President DK Shivkumar said that some people are not able to digest the “Freedom March” by the Congress party. “Someone is trying to create disturbance in the state. They are not able to digest Congress’ Freedom March,” Shivakumar said.

Congress MLA from Rajasthan resigns from his post over the atrocities against Dalits in the Congress-ruled state

Congress MLA from Baran-Atru constituency in Rajasthan, Pana Chand Meghwal, has tendered his resignation from the post of MLA. Meghwal said in his resignation that since he can’t protect the rights of his community, he has no right to continue as an MLA. Meghwal’s resignation comes after a 9-year-old Dalit boy was beaten to death in Jalore in Rajsthan by his school teacher over allegedly touching a water pot.

In his resignation letter sent to the Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot, Meghwal wrote, “When we fail to protect the rights of our community, we have no right to remain on the post. After listening to my inner voice, I resign from the post of the MLA, so that I can serve the community without any position.”

Further, Meghwal said, “I’m deeply hurt by the death of a 9-yr-old Dalit student in Jalore & I’m tendering my resignation. Dalits & deprived communities are being subjected to constant atrocities & torture.”

In his resignation letter, he also mentioned that the cases of atrocities against Dalits have been rising in recent years and the cases against these atrocities are stuck in the judicial process with files passing moving from one table to another.

Death of 9-year-old Dalit boy in Jalore, Rajasthan

A nine-year-old Dalit child succumbed to his injuries on Saturday after reportedly being beaten up by a teacher in a private school in the Jalore district of Rajasthan for touching a drinking water pot. According to police, Chail Singh (40), the teacher who assaulted the child, has been detained and charged with murder and violating the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

According to authorities, the nine-year-old kid Indra Meghwal was apparently beaten up by the teacher on July 20 and died on Saturday in a hospital in Ahmedabad due to his injuries. Harsh Vardhan Agarwalla, the SP of Jalore, said that the youngster had been severely assaulted.

Uttar Pradesh: I-Day celebration in school shows ‘Bharat Mata’ performing ‘Namaz’, police claims viral clip misleading, play about communal harmony

A video of some students at a school in Uttar Pradesh presenting a play in which the crown of Bharat Mata is removed and she is shown performing Namaz on the stage has gone viral on the internet. The video has prompted outrage, with some people urging police action against the institution.

The video shows an Independence Day celebration at a school in Lucknow’s Malviya Nagar Police Station’s Bazarkhala area. In a statement following the event, the Uttar Pradesh Police stated that an inquiry into the viral video showed that the incident occurred at the Shishu Bharatiya Vidyalaya in the Bazarkhala neighbourhood of Lucknow.

The statement by UP Police reads, “A video has been found on social media in which a girl is depicted as Bharat Mata and she is shown performing Namaz after her crown is removed. Upon investigation, it was found that the video was shot at Shishu Bharatiya Vidyalaya in the Bazarkhala locality of Malviya Nagar Thana.”

“In this respect, the school administration was contacted and it was learned that children in the school performed a play where it was portrayed that violence should not be done in the name of religion and communal harmony should be maintained. The viral video is a trimmed part of the whole play and action is being taken against the originator of the video,” it further adds.

‘Hindus killed for being Hindus’ series: The tragic tale of Chandan Gupta, killed in the 2018 Kasganj communal clash over a flag march

Things will never be the same for the family of Chandan Gupta, who was killed in a communal clash that erupted over a flag march in Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh, taken out on Republic Day in the year 2018. Though the exact chain of events leading to the violence had been subjected to multiple versions, it was clear that something triggered a fight between local Muslims and the participants of the Tiranga Yatra, and the Hindu volunteer named Chandan died.

Chandan’s father had alleged that his son was shot for refusing to chant “Pakistan Zindabad”.

Chandan’s untimely death was widely mourned by a majority of Indians except for a handful of so-called liberals who started to blame him for his own death.

The year following his death, the state government honoured Chandan’s family in the Republic Day parade organised in the police line in Kasganj. Following the demands from Chandan’s family, the government announced that a chowk or intersection in the town will be named after Chandan. Along with these, Chandan’s sister Kirti had reportedly been offered a contractual job with the government.

The Uttar Pradesh police in this matter were quick to act and on 31st January 2018 arrested the main accused Salim and 120 others. The two brothers of his Naseem and Waseem who continued to evade arrest were also finally apprehended.

However, no amount of effort can ever be adequate to heal a family that has lost a young son. Chandan Gupta’s family’s anguish over the killing of their son at the hands of enraged fanatics has only grown with time. After nearly 4 years, OpIndia contacted Sushil Gupta, the late Chandan Gupta’s father, to inquire about the latest situation in his home.

Fear compelled the elder son to quit his job: Father of Chandan Gupta narrates his family’s ordeal

Chandan’s father, who still hasn’t come to terms with the death of his young son, told OpIndia, “After Chandan was murdered, my family was protected by a police gunman for over a year. However, after a year, our security was lifted. My eldest son, Vivek Gupta, is a witness in this case. He worked in a private firm as a medical representative, but we got him to quit his job out of fear. We’ve also received a number of threats over time. Now the entire family’s responsibility rests with me alone. I am taking care of my family by working as a compounder in a private hospital. We have to get our daughter also married in the next few years, said Chandan’s father.

All accused except Salim have been released from jail

Chandan Gupta’s father informed us how over time, 28 out of the 29 individuals charged in connection with the 2018 Kasganj communal clash and the subsequent murder of Chandan Gupta, have been released from jail. “The High Court granted bail to all of them. Only one accused, Salim, is currently in custody, and his case will be tried in the High Court this month,” said Sushil Gupta.

According to Gupta, he has also filed a caveat in this case in his own capacity and was incurring a lot of expenses while fighting the case before the High Court. He said that the accused are well-off. As a result, they have an advantage when it comes to battling the law.

He went on to explain that when they went to Kasganj court to defend the case, they would have three or four people on their side, while the accused would get 100 to 200 to support them. Sushil Gupta further lamented how it was becoming impossible for his family to cope with pursuing the legal battle in the High Court with their limited resources, which is why they got the case shifted to the Lucknow Court. “Now, we travel to Lucknow for the hearings that too without any security,” said Chandan’s father.

Witnesses not coming forward in fear says father of Chandan Gupta

“There were more than a half-dozen witnesses in Chandan’s murder case,” said Chandan Gupta’s father, adding that, except for a handful, everyone else is refusing to testify. “Now that my elder son is the sole remaining eyewitness in the case, we are more concerned about his safety,” said Sushil Gupta to OpIndia.

Unfulfilled promises

Sushil Gupta became emotional while speaking with us. “After Chandan died, a flurry of promises were made to us, including granting my daughter a government job and renaming a municipal plaza after Chandan,” he added, tearfully. “My daughter has just finished her MSc. He was granted a job at the block level, which lasted only 5 months. Aside from that, we have placed Chandan’s statue at the crossroads at our own expense, but it has not been unveiled until today,” said Sushil Gupta.

It is unknown, however, if the administration was consulted before erecting Chandan’s bust at the crossroads. However, if Sushil Gupta is to be believed, the place where Chandan’s statue was placed was proposed by Minister Suresh Pasi after discussion with local authorities following his death. At its board meeting, the municipality also approved renaming Nadrai Gate to Chandan Chowk. However, the municipality had left the construction at the location of the statue’s installation incomplete. Following that, Chandan’s family and other community members plastered the platform and installed an idol there on January 3, 2022.

Also, we have not been able to speak with the administration regarding Sushil Gupta’s assertion concerning his daughter’s work. As soon as we receive the details, we will update this report.

Food was not prepared at the home of late Chandan Gupta on Rakshabandhan

The beleaguered father of Chandan Gupta told us how his family has stopped celebrating festivals after the demise of his younger son. “On Rakshabandhan, my daughter placed sweets and a Rakhi in front of Chandan’s photo and sobbed the entire day. We didn’t even turn on the gas stove… no food was prepared in our house on that day,” Sushil Gupta bemoaned.

He further told us how his wife often falls sick thinking about that awful day. “The government then helped us with 20 lakh rupees, however, all that money has been utilised in fighting Chandan’s murder case.”

Some people approach us with offers to end the case

“It is a travesty that while I am fighting for justice for my late son despite all the threats and pressure, there are these individuals who are being sent to pressurise me to finish the case. Most of them who approach me are Hindus. They come to me with various offers and temptations. However, I am willing to die but not give up. I will fight until my last breath to bring those responsible for the death of my son to justice,” said Sushil Gupta.

Iran blames Salman Rushdie and his supporters for the attack on Rushdie’s life

0

Author Salman Rushdie was stabbed in the neck and abdomen by an attacker identified as 25-year-old Hadi Matar in New York last week. The celebrated 75-year-old author has faced years of death threats since the publication of his novel ‘The Satanic Verses’ in 1988. Soon after the reports of the attack came out, the fingers were pointed toward the fatwa that was issued in Tehran three decades ago calling for Rushdie’s assassination. Iran, trying to deny any link between the attack and the fatwa, washed its hands off the attack and instead blamed Rushdie and his supporters for the attack.

Notably, Iranian media have been extensively gloating over the attack and have called it ‘divine retribution’. Reacting to the media reports that Rushdie may lose one eye following the attack, Iran’s state broadcaster Jaam-e Jam said, “An eye of Satan has been blinded.” US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken had termed Iran’s media’s behavior ‘despicable.’

On August 15 (local time), Nasser Kanaani Tehran, foreign ministry spokesperson of Iran, categorically denied any links between the attacker and the Islamic country. He said, “No one has the right to accuse the Islamic Republic of Iran.” Notably, he said Freedom of Speech does not give the right to Rushdie to insult Islam in his writings.

Blaming Salman Rushdie for the attack, Nasser said, “In this attack, we do not consider anyone other than Salman Rushdie and his supporters worthy of blame and even condemnation,” during the weekly press conference. He added, “By insulting the sacred matters of Islam and crossing the red lines of more than 1.5 billion Muslims and all followers of the divine religions, Salman Rushdie has exposed himself to the anger and rage of the people.”

Furthermore, according to Nasser, Iran did not have any information about the attacker except what was publicly available in international media reports. Notably, the accused named Hadi Matar had used a fake driver’s license bearing the name Hassan Mughniyah. This name is a mix of two senior officials of the Iran-backed terror group Hezbollah. The Hezbollah’s current leader is Hassan Nasrallah while Imad Mughniyeh was a senior Hezbollah official close to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force chief Qassem Soleimani.

It is noteworthy that when Satanic Verses was launched, then-Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini had issued a fatwa against Salman Rushdie, calling for his assassination, and placed a bounty of $3 million on his head. The fatwa is still active though the Iranian government has distanced itself from the decree. Later in 2012, a quasi-official Iranian religious foundation added $500,000 to the bounty.

Nupur Sharma blamed for the murders of Kanhaiya Lal and Umesh Kohle

Blaming Rushdie and his supporters for the attack has striking similarities to former Bharatiya Janata Party’s spokesperson Nupur Sharma getting blamed for the murders of Hindu tailor Kanhaiya Lal from Udaipur and Hindu Businessman Umesh Kohle from Amravati.

Both Kanhaiya Lal and Umesh Kohle were killed for extending their support to Nupur Sharma on social media platforms. Notably, Sharma was suspended from the party for her comments on Prophet Mohammed. Sharma is constantly facing threats to her life and has been hiding ever since Alt News’ co-founder Mohammed Zubair opened a floodgate of threats against her by publishing an out-of-context video on Twitter.

Following their brutal murder of Kanhaiya Lal and Umesh Kohle, several hashtags blaming Sharma went viral on social media. Even the Supreme Court Judges blamed her for the unrest in the country instead of pointing fingers at the actual perpetrators of the violence. In its oral observations, SC Judges blamed Nupur Sharma for her ‘loose tongue’ and refused to give her interim relief. It was only after the public uproar that Sharma got some relief from the court, and all FIRs against her were clubbed and transferred to Delhi.
