Sri Lankan Navy seizes 336 kg of heroin from a trawler, 7 Pakistani nationals apprehended: Details

The Sri Lankan Navy seized 336 kilogram of heroin from a trawler in an operation in Male and brought the haul back to Colombo, IANS has reported. The seized heroine is believed to be worth Rs. 3.1 billion. Seven Pakistan nationals were apprehended in the operation.

The vessel was reportedly acting as a multi-day fishing trawler and was transporting drugs to other boats. Further investigation into the matter is currently underway. The operation was carried out by the Sri Lankan Navy with assistance from the Police and other intelligence services from the country.

Defence Secretary General (Retd.) Kamal Gunaratne and Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne, were reportedly present at the Colombo Harbour to inspect the narcotics haul where it was brought after the seizure.

According to report, a few days prior, Sri Lanka Navy Intelligence and State Intelligence Service carried out a similar operation based on information received from a coordinated intelligence operation. That operation resulted in the seizure of 290kg and 200g stock of heroin and led to the apprehension of 5 suspects and vessel used for smuggling.

The recent operation was based on the information received earlier. Subsequently, SLNS Samudura intercepted the foreign vessel. Authorities in Sri Lanka suspect that the vessel was meant to be stationed in international waters with the objective of smuggling narcotics into the country.

In December last year, Sri Lankan authorities seized Rs 2.5 billion worth of drugs which originated from Gwadar port in Pakistan. Four people were arrested for transporting heroin and crystal methamphetamine to Sri Lankan boats from the Pak Dhow that had set off from China-controlled Gwadar port of Pakistan.

Kashmir Police shares videos of last rituals of Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s mortal remains, claims of dead body wrapped in Pakistani flag debunked

Kashmir Police on Monday shared videos of cleansing rituals of mortal remains of Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani who passed away on 1st September, 2021, Wednesday.

Ghusal/Ghusl is an Arabic term for ritual bath mandatory for seven causes of Islam including death.

Ghusl is often referred to as ‘full ablution’ as against ‘partial ablution’ of wudu, which Muslims perform after ‘lesser impurities’ like urination, defecation, flatulence, deep sleep, and light bleeding.

According to Islam, Ghusl is mandatory for seven causes and ghusl for each of these causes have different names.

  • Ghusl Janabat is performed after sexual intercourse or ejaculation.
  • Ghusl Hayd is performed following menstruation.
  • Ghusl Nifas is performed after vaginal discharge after childbirth
  • Ghusl Mayyit is performed on a mortal remains of a Muslim.

In some denominations, two further categories obligate ghusl:

  • Ghusl Istihada is for irregular bleeding (in women).
  • Ghusl Mas-hil Mayyit is obligatory if one directly touches a dead body.
  • If one takes a vow or oath to perform ghusl then also it becomes obligatory to perform it.

Kashmir Police also shared video of the wrapping up of the dead body of SAS Geelani in a shroud.

Sharing of these videos puts to rest the Pakistani propaganda that the Geelani’s body was wrapped in Pakistan flag.

But as seen above, his shroud was white and not Pakistan flag.

Kashmir Police also shared the video of funeral prayer held for Geelani, where one can see a lot of people attending the Janaza.

Following Geelani’s death, Jammu and Kashmir police rushed to his residence to facilitate the separatist’s burial at the wee hours of the morning. They were met with resistance and the family alleged that the cops tried to snatch the deceased’s body. The family members also accused the police personnel of forcibly barging into the house and burying Geelani’s body. However, as can be seen above, there were quite a few people who attended the funeral prayers for Geelani.

Former England cricketer Nick Compton dons Michael Vaughan’s hat, jibes at Virat Kohli fall flat as India win versus England

Former England cricketer Nick Compton did a Michael Vaughan during the 4th match between India versus England. Compton decided to engage in light banter with Indian fans, believing that the match would end in a draw. However, the England batting line-up collapsed on the 5th and final day and India managed to clinch the win.

Nick Compton said on Sunday, “Can’t see this being anything other than a draw! India’s bowling apart from Bumrah will struggle. If only Ashwin was playing… oh Kohli it’s good to have independent thinkers in your team”.

Source: Twitter

He followed it up on Monday saying, “Where have all my Indian Kohli loving fans gone?” By the start of play on 5th Day, Compton felt confident enough to assert, “Big day for England – a flat wicket and no Ashwin. Lovely opportunity for a record run chase!”

The banter with Indian fans backfired on him as England went on to lose the match in the last session of the 4th match. As India’s win appeared certain, Indian fans returned the favour with interest.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has built a reputation for himself of getting predictions wrong with remarkable frequency. In a recent tiff with Indian fans, the former cricketer had blamed the pitch at the Narendra Modi Stadium at Ahmedabad after India beat England.

Arunachal Pradesh MLAs to stop migration from border areas with China, constitute a forum

0

MLAs of Arunachal Pradesh united to constitute a forum in order to stop people migrating from the border areas. The newly formed forum “Indo-China Border Development Legislators of Arunachal Pradesh” is aimed at devising plans and strategies to develop the backward areas along the Indo-China border region.

MLAs from the constituencies of the border region met at Itanagar on Saturday to discuss the problem of migration from the backward areas along the Indo-China border and suggest a developmental framework to mitigate the problem.

Assembly Speaker Passang Dorjee Sona ,who was named as the Chairman of the forum, said, “The border residents lack basic amenities and they tend to migrate to urban areas for a better life. The only way we can check their migration is by giving them opportunities through development initiatives.” Sona is a representative from the Mechuka constituency.

In the past, the local residents living near the border, were India’s first line of defense, and reported Chinese infraction to the security forces. However, recent years have seen a stable influx of people from the border areas to Itanagar in search of jobs while the border region itself remains underdeveloped.

The MLAs from the border constituencies through the forum recognize the urgent need to stop or reverse this influx of people from the border areas and hence avoid further isolation of the area which might trigger Chinese infiltration. The forum also acknowledges that the guidelines of the Border Area Development Programme (BADP) hinders any move to develop the region. The forum also seek to modify the guidelines of the BADP besides suggesting an improvised method of funds allocation, blockwise utilisation certification by abolishing the practice of collective submission.

The press release buy NIA dated September 6, 2021

The case was originally registered at Ramamurthy Nagar police station, Bengaluru city on June 8, 2021, after the police conducted a raid at a rented house at K Channasandra, Bengaluru, where seven women and one child of Bangladeshi Nationality were rescued from the custody of four human traffickers.

NIA takes over Bengaluru human trafficking case

The central agency had re-registered the case as RC-16/2021/NIA/DLI dated 13.07.2021 and taken over the investigation.

According to the investigation, the above thirteen charge-sheeted accused crossed into India illegally. With the prospect of jobs, they lured women from Bangladesh to India. The women were then imprisoned and sexually exploited in rented lodgings. The accused also faked identity cards in order to get Indian identity cards such as Aadhar cards, PAN cards, and so on, for themselves as well as their victims.

Bengaluru police jumps to action after video, where an illegally trafficked Bangladeshi woman was raped and tortured, went viral

The Ramamurthy Nagar police had unearthed the racket while investigating a case of torture and gang rape of a Bangladeshi woman in Bengaluru. A horrific video of the woman’s assault had gone viral on social media in May 2021, in which four men and a woman were seen sexually assaulting and torturing a young woman. The footage had caused outrage and police officials in several states were alerted to find the culprits.

According to the police, the victim, a Bangladeshi woman, was illegally trafficked to India under the pretext of a job and was later forced into prostitution. Although she was able to flee, the accused hunted her down. They then assaulted and gang-raped her with the help of their female aide.

The Bengaluru police had then arrested the two main accused – Shobuj Sheik and Rafiq, alias Rafsan have been arrested. Their associates Ridoy Babu, Rakibul Islam Sagar, Mohammed Babu Shaik, Hakil, Ajim, Jamal, Dalim, Nasrath, Kajal and Tanya, were also taken to custody.

In June 2021, one of the accused in the assault and gang rape of a Bangladeshi woman in Bengaluru was shot by the police after he tried to attack and escape from the police custody. The incident had come days after two of his accomplices were shot at and injured by the Bengaluru police during an escape attempt

Politicians cheer crowded ‘Mahapanchayat’ even as third wave of Coronavirus comes knocking, Tikait justifies deaths for ‘bigger cause’

One of the most unfortunate things about the pandemic is that it has brought out the ugly side of politicians who have used the deaths and destructions for their own political gains and settling scores. The opposition especially seems to have mastered the art of ‘corona convenience’. Remember how they first created vaccine hesitancy and then cried foul on ‘no vaccines’?

Similarly, recollect how they fear-mongered just before the recently concluded state assembly elections and criticized political rallies? Around that time the Kumbh Mela was also being held in Uttarakhand, a couple of hundred kms away from West Bengal. Unfortunately, the second wave of coronavirus pandemic that led to unprecedented oxygen crisis that led to death of lot of people. Many of these deaths could have been avoided had every one of us, including the administrations had not been lax and become complacent.

Now with things coming back to normalcy in most of India (except Kerala where the pandemic continues to be unhinged for reasons best known to state administration), the politicians are back with holding large scale rallies. The ones who were upset with Kumbh Mela and BJP rallies ahead of West Bengal elections (where BJP made significant progress in number of seats), are not back themselves cheering for huge political rallies being held in name of ‘farmer protests’.

Politicians cheer Muzaffarnagar crowd

Cheering mass gathering after dissing it publicly, several leaders from Congress and AAP have congratulated the ‘andolanjeevis’ for not letting the protest against Farm Bills aka against the Bhartiya Janta Party, die.

Congress leader cum pilot and now a poet (going by the Tweets), Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter to dedicate a poem to the dissenters responsible for the Republic Day riots. Gandhi sharing visuals of the Kisan Mahapanchayat held on Sunday claimed that the truth is now echoing and the unjust government will have to listen to it.

In another post sharing an old picture, Gandhi said that the ‘farmers’ are standing fearlessly against the farm laws.

Sharing the same old image and few others stolen from BKU leader Rakesh Tikait’s profile, Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh issued a sermon saying the one who will follow the footsteps of dreaded dictator Hitler, will not be able to rule India.

“This country’s Annadata has been on the roads for 9 months, more than 650 farmers have been martyred in this movement, but it is the Modi government’s Hitlerism to ignore the demands of crores of farmers acting a slave of a few capitalists,” Singh Tweeted in Hindi.

Giving out the most inappropriate message at the time of a pandemic, Tikait suggested that it is better to die a quick death to the coronavirus than die a slow death to the Farm Bills.

Encouraging mob mentality, Tikait Tweeted, “Mobocracy is the biggest weapon in democracy.”

Your lives mean zilch to these politicians.

What is unfortunate is that should the infections escalate now, these very people will blame others instead of looking inward and introspecting on how they shamelessly not only flouted the COVID norms but celebrated it. That a common person like you and I are being asked to not celebrate our festivals, our children cannot go to schools and colleges and while every one of us is being disciplined, these hooligans in garb of political leaders are derailing our sacrifices.

One hopes it does not happen, but if this Diwali you are asked to stay at home and not go meet your friends and family ‘because of third wave’, thank a ‘farmer’.

Jasprit Bumrah broke THIS bowling record during 4th Test match vs England

Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah reached a personal milestone of 100 test wickets during the 4th match between India versus England in the ongoing test series. In the process, he broke the record of the fastest Indian pacer to reach the milestone.

Jasprit Bumrah secured 100 wickets in 24 matches. The previous bowler to hold the record, Kapil Dev, achieved the same in 25 matches. The bowler’s 100th wicket was Ollie Pope and he soon followed it up with the wicket of Bairstow.

Bumrah’s stunning spell put India in a commanding position in the 4th test match, requiring only four more wickets to win the game (at the time of writing this report). Ravindra Jadeja picked up two wickets after Shardul Thakur provided India their first breakthrough with the wicket of Rory Burns. Dawid Malan was run out for 5 runs.

Going into the 5th Day, India needed 10 wickets to win the match after setting England a target of 368. India were dismissed for a meagre 191 in the first innings where Shardul Thakur scored a quick fire 57. England, in response, scored 290 and took a 99 run lead.

India, in their second innings, scored a mammoth 466 with a brilliant century from ‘Hitman’ Rohit Sharma. Shardul Thakur and Rishabh Pant chimed in with crucial half centuries towards the latter end of the innings to put India in pole position.

Tamil Nadu: DMK Govt accused of trying to trap intersex activist in false cases, human right activists condemn harassment

National and international human rights activists have come together to raise their voice against the alleged harassment meted out to Intersex activist Gopi Shankar Madurai by the DMK government.

“We the members of the national and international human rights community deeply condemn the human rights violation and inhumane treatment committed by the Revenue Inspector of Chengalpattu (Mahabalipuram) James, District Collector of Chengalpattu Rahul Nadh IAS, Police Inspector Mahabalipuram D. Natarajan on Gopi Shankar Madurai, South Region representative of the National Council for Transgender Persons (NTCP) and prominent intersex rights activist who has contributed a lot for the betterment of gender and sexual minorities,” read the statement issued by the activists.

Madurai, in a Facebook post last week, also accused the DMK government of trapping him in a false drug case. “The present Tamil Nadu DMK Government and the DMK appointed TN police is trying to trap me in more false cases to destroy me, they are scripting fake stories that I smuggle drugs,” read Madurai’s post on the platform.

Gopi Shankar Madurai’s Faceboook post

Madurai alleged physical harassment by police officials

In the month of August, Gopi Shankar Madurai, the South Representative at the National Council for Transgender Persons, had accused a team of police and revenue officials of verbally abusing and physically harassing him during an inspection at an eatery in Mamallapuram.

Reportedly, Madurai was there with 20 other people from the transgender community for a grievance meeting. “..But the meeting was interrupted by insensitive officials and we were treated like cattle and asked to vacate the premises. Mamallapuram police inspector kept his hand on my chest and pushed me unwilling to listen to us,” Madurai alleged saying they also commented on his clothes.

Refuting all the allegations leveled by Madurai, Chengalpattu Collector Rahul Nandh had said that Madurai was sitting with his friends at an eatery violating Covid-19 norms. Hence the group was simply asked to vacate the premises.

“It was Gopi who threatened the officers. The eatery owner and Gopi have been booked under the Epidemic Diseases Act and relevant sections of the Criminal Procedure Code. There was no abuse and the FIR was registered based on a proper investigation,” the official had said while speaking with The New Indian Express, contradicting the allegations made by Madurai.

Community urge that due process should be followed

Expressing shock at the behaviour of state officials, the activists have said that due process of law should be followed in Madurai’s case.

“We issue this statement in solidarity with the firm belief that any form of inhumane treatment, hatred, and violence against Gopi and SOGIESC community is an attack on all of us and the rights enshrined in the Supreme Constitution of India. We stand together to call for solidarity and support across our various communities.”, the statement read further.

The letter was signed by queer and transgender activists from Bangladesh, Canada and Pakistan. Several activists and organizations from India also expressed solidarity with Gopi Shankar Madurai.

Aravindan Balakrishnan and his Maoist cult in London: The sordid tale of exploitation, abuse and brainwashing

A woman who was held captive by her cult leader father for over three decades has recently opened about travails she endured during her period of captivity at the Communist Collective, a cult in south London founded by her father, Aravindan Balakrishnan, and how she escaped it.

For the first three decades of her life, Katy Morgan-Davies, now 38, was held as a slave under the total control of her father, Aravindan Balakrishnan, a self-styled leader called by his followers as ‘Comrade Bala’ or ‘Comrade B’. Balakrishnan ruled over his daughter and six other women ‘comrades’ with the use of violence and by inducing psychological terror in his captives.

In 2013, at the age of 30, Davies managed to escape her father’s Maoist cult, known by its followers as the Communist Collective, in Brixton, south London. Eight years later, she has shared her experience of her life under a cult leader for over three decades in a telltale interview with The Sunday Times.

More than two years after she fled the cult, in 2016, Balakrishnan, a former student at the London School of Economics(LSE), was found guilty of multiple offences, including rape, actual bodily harm and cruelty to a minor child. For over 30 years, he raped two of his followers, the court said. At the time of Balakrishnan’s trial, Davies had spoken against her, stating that it was “horrible, dehumanising and degrading” and that she felt like a “caged bird with clipped wings” under Comrade Bala. Balakrishnan was locked up for 23 years for offences including false imprisonment, child cruelty and assault.

Who is Aravindan Balakrishnan?

Born in Kerala, Aravindan Balakrishnan had migrated to Singapore where his father was stationed as a soldier. Later he shifted to London, where he completed his graduation from the hallowed London School of Economics. Soon after coming to the United Kingdom, Balakrishnan was attracted to the communist ideology. In 1974, he was ousted from the Communist Party of England (Marxist–Leninist) on account of “their pursuance of conspiratorial and splittist activities … spreading social fascist slanders against the Party and the proletarian movement” and attempting “to put themselves above the discipline of the Party”.

He later created a cult called the Communist Collective, based on the teachings of the then CCP Chairman Mao Zedong in the late 1970s. He styled himself as Comrade Bala and his Tanzanian wife as Comrade Chanda and enlisted a bunch of female followers, who were initially smitten with his charismatic patter, but who were later subjugated by him with the use of psychological and physical terror, supernatural threats and sexual violence.

Balakrishnan considered himself as ‘God’

Balakrishnan created a halo of magnificence surrounding him, elevating himself to the position of God. He managed to convince his followers that he is the supreme being who could control their minds and possessed the power of striking them dead with a single touch. The cult members were expected to hew to a strict set of rules, which were punishable by violence. They were not allowed to make noise, appear drowsy in the morning or laud one another and many other such restrictions. Though, the rules would change constantly based on the whims and the fancies of Comrade Bala.

Often, he intimidated his followers with apocalyptic prophecies and by purveying wild conspiracy theories. He had predicted that a Maoist revolution would rise and transcend national boundaries, overthrowing the “British Fascist State”, which he claimed had deployed spies and agents everywhere, even in the house next door. He successfully convinced his followers that he was a God, who possessed seamless power to control the sun, the moon, wind and fires. He warned them that they would die in case they abandon or betray him. He said they would be incinerated by spontaneous combustion; mortally injured by a lightning attack; or be struck down by a “Jackie”, a Chinese-built satellite weapon over which Comrade Bala commands control.

Balakrishnan conjured up “Jackie” to threaten his followers; forced them to swallow his semen saying it was “the elixir of life”

JACKIE was nothing but a figment of Bala’s imagination, a mystical machine that allegedly monitored all thought and had the power to control minds. According to the cult leader, JACKIE was an acronym for Jehovah, Allah, Christ, Krishna and ‘Immortal Easwaran’. So, on the occurrence of any major event in the world, for example, the explosion of the American Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986 or an earthquake, Bala would link the cause of the event to the imaginary weapon created by him, JACKIE, to reinforce its strength and intimidate his followers. Years later, some of his victims are still terrified of hearing the name JACKIE.

Explaining how they were mentally conditioned to believe JACKIE was real, Davies had said in 2016, “If I did something wrong, others and me, we would be killed by JACKIE, he would warn us” she told Sky News. “If he intervened by slapping us and beating us … then JACKIE would think that enough has been done and not kill us. So we should be thankful that he is hurting us … because we would be saved from JACKIE.”

The BBC in January 2017 hosted a documentary, providing details about the cult of “JACKIE”

Furthermore, in order to tighten his control over his followers, Bala asserted to his followers that he is immortal and they should obey him unquestioningly, should they want to escape death. This obedience also extended to sexual acts and Bala would often sexually abuse his followers on the pretext of granting them immortality and safeguarding them against evils.

As per evidence presented in the court that eventually led to his conviction, Balakrishnan began sexually abusing two of his women followers in 1979 and often derived sadistic pleasure beating them and making others watch it as he did so. All the women held captive by Balakrishnan were subjected to assault and four(not including his wife) were reportedly sexually assaulted by him. Balakrishnan forced the women to swallow his ejaculation, touting it to be “the elixir of life“. In his arraignment, Bala defended himself, saying that the women he sexually abused had been attempting to seduce him out of “jealousy” for his lover.

Katy was born inside the cult, to one of the followers

A child was conceived in 1983 after a follower, Sian Davies had fallen pregnant by Balakrishnan. A report by The Guardian had revealed that the collective then undertook a new experiment named Project Prem. The child was initially named Prem Maopinduzi, which means Love Revolution. As a part of the project, the child would never be told about her parents. Bala told her she was a foundling discovered by him. The ultimate plan was to “hand over the world to her,” a transition that would begin with Brazil, in which she would assume control when the time was right. Prem, of course, was Katy, unbeknownst of the horror that awaited her.

Bala forbade everyone from cuddling her or being affectionate towards the child. Nor was Prem or Katy allowed to visit a doctor or even consult a dentist. She did not attend school, although she does have a vague memory of someone teaching her to read and write. However, what Katy remembers vividly is that she was beaten by Bala and his followers all the time. The meanest of the followers, according to Katy, was Sian, her biological mother.

Katy Morgan Davies(Image Credit: The Guardian)

Cooped up in a small room with the windows covered by two sets of curtains, Katy was banned from going outside, mingling with other children and socialising with anyone outside the confines of the cult. Katy first saw television when she turned 19.

However, initially, Katy did not know who her mother was. Sian was a colonialist, had an imperialist background, which led other cult members to bully her while she was unable to say anything critical about Bala.

Sian, who was once a brilliant student at Cheltenham Ladies’ College, fell into the grips of the cult and could never escape. After joining the cult, Sian soon became one of the most loyal devotees of Balakrishnan and ended up getting pregnant by him.

In 1996, Katy, who shared the same surname as her mother, came to know about her mother. But by then, her mother was hallucinating from the psychosis induced by Balakrishnan’s mental games and years of neglect. She reportedly became ill, started talking to herself, cried hours on length, but was denied seeking external medical help. Later, Sian jumped or fell, from an upstairs window and was paralysed from the neck down. She was admitted to the intensive care unit. Fours months after that, she died.

After realising that she has been held captive, Katy decided to flee from the cult. However, it took years for her to hatch a plan that would result in her liberation. Although Katy had no experience of the outer world, she hunkered down to deradicalise herself and find a way to exit the cult. She says as she got older, her father grew less concerned about a neighbour seeing a child in the window and sounding an alarm. She used this opportunity to explore what the external world was by eyeballing others and trying to adapt their ways and behaviour. This cognition eventually helped her in devising a scheme that brought an end to the interminable nightmare she was experiencing.

Katy’s devises an escape plan to flee from the brutal cult led by her father

Katy discerned that it would be extremely difficult and incredibly risky to leave the cult on her own. So, she persuaded another follower, Josephine Herivel, to join her in the pursuit to flee from the place. She told Herivel that Bala’s wife was a damaging influence on him, knowing that any denunciation of Balakrishnan would be reported right back to him. Eventually, using a mobile she smuggled in, Josephine called a helpline of a charity she had seen on television.

Charity workers Gerard Stocks and Yvonne Hall helped in the rescue of the two women. After Katy and Josie left, a third woman, Aisha, also followed soon. But, months later, Josie sought Balakrishnan’s forgiveness and returned to live with his wife, Chanda. Josie had even denounced the punishment the court had ordered after holding Balakrishnan guilty. Aisha, however, continues to lead an independent life in Leeds, England.

When Katy escaped, she had the social skills of a six-year-old. She could not cross the road on her own or use even basic appliances. Her mobility skills were severely impaired due to years of confinement in a closed space. For decades, she was denied visits to doctors, dentists. Instead, she was condemned to live within the confines of the cult and systematically brainwashed to believe her own behaviour was responsible for natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods and cyclones.

In the BBC documentary, neighbours of the house where the group existed had revealed that they had no idea so many people were held captive there. As per reports, Katie, as a child, used to hold up signs on the window, with “help me” written on them. But the letters were too small to read. Casual passers-by and neighbours never suspected what was going on inside the house.
