Supreme Court declines to quash FIRs against TV anchor Amish Devgan for his inadvertent remarks against Sufi saint Moinuddin Chisti

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to quash multiple FIRs lodged against television news anchor Amish Devgan over his allegedly defamatory remarks against Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti.

A bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar and Sanjiv Khanna, however, banded together the complaints filed against Devgan in different states and transferred them to Ajmer in Rajasthan. About 7 FIRs were registered against the news anchor in connection with the case in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh.

The apex court has extended the interim protection from any coercive action, which was granted to the News18 anchor on July 8, on a condition that he continues to assist in the investigation.

Journalist Amish Devgan mistakenly refers to Moinuddin Chisti as “lootera” while talking about Alauddin Khilji

Devgan found himself in hot water after he referred to Sufi Saint Moinuddin Chisti as “lootera” while hosting a show on June 15 about the Place of Worship Special Provision Act on his show ‘Aar Par’. Amish Devgan was seen referring to Chishti as an invader who had tortured and forcefully converted the Hindus of India. However, Devgan later apologized saying that he had mistakenly named Chishti in place of Alauddin Khilji. Following the show, several police complaints and FIRs were filed against the anchor in various parts of the country.

Citing it to be an inadvertent error, Amish Devgan had tendered an apology on Twitter a day after the show was telecasted, saying he was referring to Muslim ruler Alauddin Khilji and had mistakenly named Chisti, also known as Khwaja Gareeb Nawaaz (benefactor of the poor). The journalist also added in his tweet that he has himself sought the saint’s blessings in the past.

“I sincerely apologise for this grave error and the anguish it may have caused to followers of the Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti, whom I revere,” he had said. “I have in the past sought blessings at his dargah. I regret this error.”

As many as 7 FIRs had been filed against the journalist in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra & Telangana. The FIRs stipulated offences under Sections 153A(promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc, and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 153G, 295A(deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 298, 505(statements conducing to public mischief), 34(acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of Indian Penal Code & 66(f) of the Information Technology Act.

The Uttar Pradesh police has taken cognisance of a viral video of a Dalit woman in which she has accused Muslim strongmen in the village of encroaching her land and forcibly trying to evict her from it.

Responding to the viral video, the official Twitter account of Balrampur police tweeted, “Investigation has been carried out in connection with the case. There is a land dispute between the two parties and a notice has been issued by the Revenue Department. The case is listed for hearing in the court. Peace is prevailing on the spot.”

Dalit woman accuses Muslim strongmen of encroaching her land and threatening her of physical assault

In the video that has gone viral on social media platforms, the victim, Ratna Devi aka Gudiya has claimed to be from the Paswan caste and has explained in detail the atrocities committed against her. Ratna Devi has alleged that Muslim thugs have beaten her up with the aim of forcibly capturing her land.

Ratna Devi added that the accused have illegally occupied her land and have been constantly harassing her, threatening her with dire consequences. She also claimed that her husband and her children have already been physically assaulted by the accused and even the village head has extended his support to the culprits.

The local police, the woman claims, has not paid heeds to her complaints and she is left with no other option but to leave the village. In the video, Ratna Devi’s husband points to the house of Zahid Ali, Chand Ali, Sattar Ali, Pir Ali and Subrati, who live in front of their house, stating that they want to encroach on their land.

After the video went viral, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s information adviser Shalabh Mani Tripathi, taking cognizance of the case, directed the UP police to ensure strict action. Following this, the police and local administration swung into action and initiated action in this regard.

Senior UP Police officials visit Dalit woman’s house, assure her of action against the culprits

After the Balaram police took cognisance of the matter on Twitter, senior police officials also paid a visit to the woman’s house, checking on her if she is still facing some problem. The video of the meeting between the senior police officials and the complainant was shared on Twitter.

The woman has requested the police officials to clear the encroachment on her land. The senior police officials assured her that her complaints regarding the encroachment and harassment by the accused will be taken care off. They have also shared their personal contact details with the woman in case her issues are not addressed by the local police officials.

The ongoing farmers’ protests in Delhi have been co-opted by opportunist politicians and ‘activists’ trying to mount an attack against the Modi government. After political parties such as Congress, Samajwadi Party and self-described activists such as Yogendra Yadav tried to exploit the agitation to further their propaganda, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, too, has jumped into the fray, in a bid to whip up anti-BJP sentiment ahead of the upcoming state elections in 2021.

At a rally in West Bengal’s West Midnapore, Banerjee contended that the Centre must withdraw the farm bills or step down from the government.

“The BJP government (at the Centre) should immediately withdraw the farm bills or step down. It should not continue
to remain in power after sacrificing the rights of the farmers,” she declaimed.

Mamata Banerjee passed similar Farm Laws in West Bengal in 2014

While Ms Banerjee held forth on how the farm bills are not in the interest of the farmers and the urgent need to repeal them, she had passed similar agriculture laws in West Bengal in 2014 which she is vehemently opposing today. This was brought to fore by a social media user who goes by Twitter handle @BefittingFacts. The social media user alleged that the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government had passed similar agriculture laws in West Bengal in 2014. The user shared screenshots from TMC websites to substantiate his assertions.

The article titled “WB Assembly passes Agricultural Marketing Bill” was published on the official website of Trinamool Congress on December 8, 2014, about six years before the Modi government passed the three farm laws. The article stated that the bill was passed by the West Bengal Assembly in order to curb the menace of the “middlemen”.

The article further added that the Bill would “promote the formation of new markets where farmers can directly sell the product to the end-users”. It stated that Government regulation will ensure a greater degree of assurance to both the farmers and the customers while being beneficial to the exchequer.

These are precisely the same reasons why the Modi government has passed the three new farms bills in the parliament. The agriculture laws promulgated by the Centre is directed at unlocking new opportunities for the farmers while eliminating the role of middlemen in the agriculture trade.

Though Mamata Banerjee had passed similar agriculture laws in 2014, she is opposing them now because it suits her political convenience. West Bengal is all set for the state assembly elections in 2021. The BJP has already made strong inroads in the West Bengal politics with winning 18 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in the 2019 General elections. The election tide in the West Bengal already seems to be turning in the favour of the BJP as TMC is plagued by resentment and rebellion among its ranks.

With the state elections approaching and TMC teetering on the edge of a political crisis, the attack against the Centre on the new Farm Bills was just a dishonest attempt by Mamata Banerjee to exploit the ongoing farmers’ protests to her advantage by portraying the BJP-led Centre as against the welfare of the farmers and thereby turn the odds of the WB assembly elections in her favour.

On December 7, West Bengal became a war zone when the police attacked BJP workers during a protest against the WB government at Tinbatti. BJP leader Tejasvi Surya, highlighting the police brutalities against peaceful protestors said, “Many BJP workers injured during their peaceful protest. #Democracy being murdered in WB.”

In another tweet, Surya urged media to report the incident. He said,”If you will not speak up against these atrocities today, you will be failing in your duties. This is beyond party politics. This is the question of India’s democracy. Look at this. It looks like a war zone. Will you raise your voice against this?”

As per the reports, police have used tear gas shells & water cannon on BJP Yuva Morcha workers. Surya has levelled severe allegations against the West Bengal police, claiming that they had attacked the BJYM workers with crude bombs. While several were injured, one worker has been confirmed dead. He said, “Sri Ulen Roy, a senior BJP karyakarta, succumbed to splinter injuries caused by the country bombs that Mamata’s police threw.”

IT cell chief and BJP leader Akshay Singh shared a series of Tweets in which he shared information about the attack on BJP workers. In one of his tweets, he has shared a video of police attacking the protesting Karyakartas.

In another tweet, Singh shared a video of police using water canons on the workers.

National General Secretary, BJP Kailash Vijayvargiya shared a video in which it was clearly visible that the police were firing tear gas shells. He alleged that while police were throwing tear gas shells, the TMC goons standing next to them were throwing country-made bombs.

Heavy police force deployed

There were two rallies scheduled for BJP’s Uttar Kanya Abhiyan. Uttar Kanya is the state secretariat in North Bengal. Thousands of BJP workers were scheduled to join the rallies along with BJP West Bengal and national leaders. For bother rallies, a heavy West Bengal Police force was deployed. As per the reports, they had tear gas shells, water cannons and other anti-riot equipment to control the crowd.

ANI quoted BJP leader Laxman Garui saying, “Trinamool Congress-backed goons opened fire at the rally. They are trying to intimidate the opposition before the upcoming Assembly elections in Bengal by unleashing political violence.” TMC has denied the allegations that TMC goons attacked BJP rally. TMC’s Bidhan Upadhyay counter-attacked BJP and said it was BJP workers who were carrying bombs. He said, “The BJP had a rally in which people were carrying bombs. Some of our people were in the vicinity and carrying out a local government scheme drive. BJP workers attacked us under the guise of the rally. We condemn this.”

BJP to hold protest at BJP state office

He said that the protests were held against the Mamta government as it has failed its promise of the development of North Bengal. The Paris beheading case had sent shockwaves across the world, where an 18-year-old Abdullakh Anzorov had beheaded a 47-year-old history teacher Samuel Paty for showcasing cartoons of Prophet Muhammad to his students. On Saturday, the deceased terrorist was given a hero’s funeral at his hometown in Shalazi village in Urus-Martanovsky district in the oil-rich Russian region of Chechnya.

As per reports, Abdullakh Anzorov was hailed as ‘lion of Islam’ and buried with ‘honours’. Around 200 people had attended the Islamic funeral of the terrorist. While the coffin of Anzorov was being carried away, the mourners yelled chants of ‘Allahu Akbar’. “The Lion of Islam has arrived to native soil today and returned to the soil. ‘No-one but Allah has strength and power,” read a video message. Reportedly, a street in Chechnya has also been named after the terrorist. Prior to committing his barbaric act, the teenage terrorist sent a video saying, “Say prayers for me, I will go through trials today and I hope that thanks to Allah’s help I will succeed.” Last month, three accused were arrested in connection to the Paris beheading case. The terrorist sympathisers in Chechnya claimed that Anzorov wanted to ‘humiliate and strike’ the 46-year-old teacher for his ‘offensive’ cartoons. One extremist leader in Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, had alleged Emmanuel Macron was forcing people to take the path of terrorism and leaving no choice for them by justifying the cartoons.

It was earlier reported that a local mosque (La Grande Mosquée de Pantin) was a part of a vicious online campaign to get Samuel Paty fired from his job. Although the mosque did not give away personal details of the deceased teacher, it was allegedly a part of the mobilisation campaign that eventually lead to the gruesome crime.

The mosque had urged its 1500 worshippers to share the video of the father of one 13-year-old Muslim girl, wherein he had called for action against Samuel Paty. Following the barbarian act, the mosque pulled down the video and express ‘regret’ for sharing it. However, the French government is in no mood to let them off the hook. In October, the government announced that the mosque will be shut down for 6 months, starting from Wednesday night. Earlier, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin had directed the closure of the mosque and warned, “not a minute’s respite for enemies of the Republic…”

Paty was killed on October 16 by 1 Abdoullakh Abouyezidovitch A in the Paris suburb of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine for showcasing cartoons of Prophet Mohammed to his students at College du Bois d’Aulne. The terrorist had also uploaded the gory pictures of the murder on Twitter, before being shot dead by the French police.

Yogendra Yadav, professional protestor masquerading as a politician, on Monday took to social media to share a new conspiracy theory ahead of the Bharat Bandh called by protesting ‘farmers’ with support of various political parties. Yadav shared a screenshot of a seemingly dubious message that made claim that the teachers have also joined the Bharat Bandh in solidarity with farmers.

The screenshot shared by Yadav did not name any school or board and had ‘Sub:information’ as headline. The message then reads “Dear Parent, Note for Classes LKG to X: Tomorrow(8 Dec) being bharat bandh(sic) we will not have online classes. We pray that farmers demands may be met soon. Regards, Principal”. The message which had punctuation mistakes and grammatical errors had time stamp of 3:13 PM.

Interestingly, there is no identifiable detail of the sender in the message. School, board, city, state – no detail regarding which ‘principal’ send this message to ‘parents’ can be seen in the message.

No sooner did Yadav shared it, netizens donned their funny hats and heavily roasted Yogendra Yadav.

A concern netizen pointed out how the schools should not take any political stand like this, whether for or against governments. However, another netizen also pointed out how the ‘principal’ in Yadav’s message is ‘anonymous’.

Others shared similar such ‘messages’ received by them.

According to her, the epidemic of Muslim men posing as Hindu to lure Hindu women into marriage and other sex crimes perpetrated against women of different faith by Muslim men with religious motivations can be solved by watching the Turkish TV series Ertugrul.

Sagarika Ghose conveniently twists the legitimate menace of forced religious conversions through grooming into a ‘paranoia’ among Hindu families and Muslim son-in-laws. She remarkably engages in victim-blaming, silencing the victims of heinous crimes in the process. She apparently believes that the lived experiences of women who were made to suffer such a terrible fate are all the consequence of self-inflicted paranoia about “Muslim sons-in-law”.

Such denialism flies on the face of observable facts. Take the example of the victim from Kanpur. She was lured by a Muslim man posing as ‘Sachin Sharma’. Her name was changed to Zoya, she was forced to eat beef and then, she was forced to have sex with a Maulvi. When she became pregnant, an illegal sex-determination test was performed and when they realised the baby was a girl, they decided to keep the baby as it could be ‘used’ in the future.

Sagarika Ghose wants us to believe it is all just ‘paranoia’ because she enjoyed watching good-looking men in a Turkish TV series. In another such case, a minor victim was lured by one Golu Khan by posing as a Hindu and ultimately forced her to convert to Islam and perform Nikaah with him. He went to the extent of wearing a Tilak and Kalawa in order to make his pretence as a Hindu more convincing.

In another case, a minor girl from Ballia was lured by Imran after hiding his religion. He managed to elope with the girl but her relatives with help from relatives managed to track them down. He was arrested by the Police in the end and a case was registered against him under relevant sections of the IPC. In yet another case, a Muslim man engaged in a relationship with a Dalit Hindu woman by posing as a Hindu and later, told her that she had to convert to Islam if she wished to get married.

The list of such cases is endless. Ultimately, political parties have been forced to take cognizance of the phenomenon and governments in numerous states have decided to enforce legislations in order to combat the crime. Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and other states have either passed such laws or are in the process of passing them.

But the denialism on the part of people like Sagarika Ghose continues unabated. Imagine the monstrosity of it for a moment. First, they deny that such crimes are occurring despite the innumerable cases that have surfaced in recent times. Then, they parade these very cases and the outrage against them as evidence of the alleged bigotry of Hindus and shame them.

It appears as if Sagarika Ghose wants the Hindu community to abandon women to such terrible fates and as evidence, she produces TV series that was produced to glorify a character from Islamic history. It is a bizarre argument that she makes and one that defies comprehension. She is so desperate to shame and insult Hindus that she is more than willing to sacrifice Hindu women at the altar of Jihad.

Indeed, the sin that Sagarika Ghose is committing is no less than those who brainwash women in order to lure them into conversion to Islam. She relies on an unrealistic fictional depiction of historical events in order to whitewash the suffering of Hindu women and the crimes that perverts commit. It is the most shameful method of gaslighting the victims of Grooming Jihad. More than that, she is providing more material to further brainwash women and open an opportunity for their grooming.

Feminists are often heard saying ‘Believe All Women’ but it appears that Hindu women who are victims of Grooming Jihad do not qualify for that. Much less believing them, it appears that they cannot even hear the heart-wrenching stories about the persecution they suffered. They will come up with bizarre excuses such as a TV series in order to blame the very victims and further mock the hardships they endured. It only reflects the utter lack of moral fortitude and the depravity that has come to encapsulate liberal discourse.

Congress supports Bharat Bandh call, shares blatant lies against the new farmer laws

The Congress party, after fueling the protests by Punjab farmers for weeks, has now supported the Bharat Bandh call given by some farmer unions and activists for December 8. Continuing their propaganda against the Union government and to mislead the farmers, the party has shared some blatant and outright lies against the new farmer laws.

In its tweet, the Congress has claimed that they are supporting the agitation against the new farmer laws, because the new laws mean that:

  • Mandis will be abolished.
  • Minimum Support Price (MSP) will be abolished
  • Farmers will have no bargaining power
  • Farmers vulnerable to exploitation by corporates
  • Lakhs of Mandi workers will be unemployed
  • Rising debt

However, all the reasons given by the Congress against the new farm laws are outright lies.

Mandis will remain, MSP will be unaffected: Modi government

The central government has clarified a number of times that they are neither abolishing Mandis not repealing MSPs. Both the claims are lies. In fact, the Congress, in its own 2019 election manifesto, had promised to abolish the APMC Act altogether. However, the Modi government has only amended the APMC Act.

Modi government has not repealed the APMC Act in its entirety. The new laws passed by the current dispensation provides the farmers with an additional avenue to sell their produce besides the state-run Mandis. The provisions in the bills exempt transactions done outside the physical premises of APMC (agricultural produce market committee) Mandis from any “market fee or cess or levy” imposed by state governments.

PM Modi, government ministers and BJP leaders have asserted again and again that MSPs will continue. Rahul Gandhi and Congress, however, have been peddling the same lies again and again.

As the government is neither abolishing Mandis nor taking back the MSPs, the claims about Mandi workers being jobless and MSPs being repealed are thus completely false.

In fact, the Congress is opposing the very same reforms that it has been promising to the farmers over the years.

More freedom to farmers, to sell anywhere, with legal provisions to protect farmer’s interests

The opposition, especially Congress, has also been spreading lies that the new laws will enable corporates to take over farmers’ lands. This is another outright lie. As has been explained by Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Krishan Pal Gujjar, one of the acts clearly states that “sale, lease or mortgage of farmers’ land is prohibited”. Contracts can be made on crops, not on land. And even in these contracts, the farmer is not bound. The new laws allow even medium farmers to sell their produce to a company or individual. The new laws ensure that the farmer gets a guaranteed price for the produce, along with technology and machinery.

The claims that farmers can be vulnerable to exploitation are false too because the new laws enable the farmer to leave the contract, without any penalty. The new laws enable farmers to be free from the clutches of local APMCs and sell their product to any person, company or organisation anywhere in India.
