Coronavirus lockdown: Tamil Nadu man dies after drinking sanitiser as an alternative for alcohol

0

A 35-year-old man, who was desperate to consume alcohol, has died after drinking sanitiser in Tamil Nadu amidst coronavirus lockdown. According to the reports, the deceased has been identified as E Bernard from Coimbatore. He worked as a gas cylinder delivery man in Coimbatore.

Bernard was found unconscious at home early on Saturday morning at around 3 am. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead. The medical examination revealed that he had consumed hand sanitizer before his death.

According to the police, Bernard was an alcoholic and was suffering from withdrawal symptoms for the last week due to the lockdown.

It was suspected that someone told to Bernard that the sanitizer had an alcohol content equivalent to liquor. He had also heard that drinking alcohol could help him fight the coronavirus. So, he used the sanitizer as an alternative for liquor, police said.

The hand sanitiser he consumed as an alternative for liquor was provided to him by the agency he worked with. As the TASMAC liquor shops have been closed, Bernard had been desperate for alcohol.

Priya, the wife of Bernard, said she was at home at the time of the incident and took Bernard to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead. An investigation is underway, said police.

Punjab: Seven Nihangs who had attacked Punjab policemen and chopped off hand of a cop nabbed from Gurudwara

The ‘Nihangs’, who had attacked the Punjab policemen and chopped-off hands of ASI Harjeet Singh have been arrested at a local Gurdwara Khichri Sahib near Patiala. Reportedly, after an initial standoff, the police managed to arrest all the ‘Nihangs’, who were hiding in Gurudwara Khichri Sahib, Balbera. Seven fugitives, including one who was injured in police firing, were taken into the custody.

The operation was supervised by IG Patiala Zone, Jatinder Singh Aulakh, said KBS Sidhu, Special Chief Secretary, Punjab.

Earlier today, a group of five ‘Nihangs’, armed with swords and iron rods, had attacked two policemen and chopped-off hands of ASI Harjeet Singh. The armed Sikhs were travelling in a vehicle and they were asked to stop at a vegetable market at 6.15 am by Mandi board officials.

“They were asked to show (curfew) passes. But they crashed the vehicle against the gate and barricades put up there,” Senior Superintendent of Police, Patiala, Mandeep Singh Sidhu said. The group then attacked the police personnel on duty, he said.

Soon after the incident, the Punjab police teams, led by Patiala SSP Mandeep Singh Sidhu, had reached the Gurdwara Khichri Sahib and urged the ‘Nihangs’ to surrender. The police sealed the area around the gurdwara and the village with three-tier security so that no one can escape.

Senior officers at the spot said that the total number of armed ‘Nihangs’ inside the gurdwara was not known initially. However, the police then reached out to Nihang leaders including Baba Balbir Singh, the head of the Buddha Dal Nihang faction—one of the biggest and richest in the country. However, the accused did not turn themselves in. Speaking to Times Now, Baba Balbir Singh has said that these men do not belong to their sect and strictest action should be taken against them. Now that they are arrested, the police will take the investigation further.

Coronavirus lockdown: Indian Railways, IPS officer come to rescue by delivering 20 litres camel milk after mother of autistic child tweets for help

At a time when entire country is shutdown due to the nationwide lockdown following the outbreak of Chinese coronavirus, the Indian Railways came to rescue of a mother, who was in the dire need of camel milk for her three-and-a-half-year-old autistic child. The child is allergic to goat, cow and buffalo milk and they had run out of stock of camel milk.

The Indian Railway transported 20 litres of camel milk to a family in Mumbai from Rajasthan after the mother tweeted about the non-availability of camel milk in Mumbai.

On April 4, Chembur resident Neha Sinha tweeted tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “Sir, I have a 3.5 yrs old child suffering from autism and severe food allergies. He survives on Camel Milk and limited qty of pulses. When lockdown started I didn’t have enough camel milk to last this long. Help me get Camel Milk or its powder from Sadri (Rajasthan).”

Soon, the tweet went viral across social media. Netizens suggested that camel milk is available from suppliers in Rajasthan, however, lamented over the non-possibility of transporting the camel milk from Rajasthan to Mumbai due to lockdown.

Following Sinha’s request, Odisha-cadre IPS officer Arun Bothra reached out to the Chief Passenger Transport Manager of North-West Railway to seek on how to transport frozen camel milk from the supplier in Rajasthan to Mumbai.

Jain, in turn, discussed the matter with Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Mahesh Chand Jewalia, after which parcel cargo train number 00902, running from Ludhiana to Bandra Terminus, was given permission to make an unscheduled halt at Falna station, near Ajmer.

“The supplier of the milk said he could send the consignment to Falna station since that was the closest. But the station was not a scheduled halt and it was decided that the train would stop there nonetheless. The goods booking counter at the station was also opened to collect the parcel. Last night, we received confirmation that the camel milk from Rajasthan to Mumbai milk was picked up from Bandra station and reached the lady’s house by 8.30 pm,” said a senior official from the North West Railways.

In the meantime, given that Sinha was in dire need for camel milk for her child, Bothra contacted the owner of Aadvik Foods, a company that manufactures camel milk powder, and helped arrange 400 gm of the milk powder through a shop in Andheri. This was to ensure Sinha’s child had something to go on till the milk from Rajasthan reached them.

“After taking permission from the appropriate authority, the train was stopped and the camel milk was delivered to the woman at Bandra. For us at the Indian Railways, this is not the time to look at commercial gains. We have been asked to help out wherever possible in whichever way we can. Our (NWR) trains run through 18 districts of the country and we will do whatever is needed to help people out,” Jain said.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal took to Twitter to hail the role of the railway officials in ensuring the essential item is delivered to the family in Mumbai. “Railways to the Rescue: Acting proactively on a mother’s request to PM Narendra Modiji, Railways delivers 20 litres of camel milk for the well being of her autistic child, from Falna in Rajasthan to Mumbai,” Goyal tweeted.

Following the 21-day nationwide lockdown, the Indian Railways has suspended all passenger, mail and express train services to combat the spread of Chinese coronavirus. Only freight and special parcel trains are running to ensure the supply of essential items.

Watch: Nihangs chop off Punjab Policeman’s hand after cops stopped them from Patiala market amidst coronavirus lockdown

In a shocking incident on Sunday in Patiala, Punjab, a group of ‘Nihangs’ (Sikhs armed with traditional weapons and dressed in loose blue top) injured two police officers and the chopped-off hand of another police officer at Sabzi Mandi, Patiala.

According to the reports, a group of five ‘Nihangs’, armed with swords and iron rods, were travelling in a vehicle and they were asked to stop at a vegetable market at 6.15 am by Mandi board officials. “They were asked to show (curfew) passes. But they crashed the vehicle against the gate and barricades put up there,” Senior Superintendent of Police, Patiala, Mandeep Singh Sidhu said.

The group then attacked the police personnel on duty, he said.

A video of the incident has now gone viral. In the video, it can be seen how Nihangs broke the barricade and attack the policemen. The chopping-off hands of ASI Singh can be seen in the video. (Note: contains gory images. Viewer discretion is advised.)

During the attack, ASI Harjeet Singh’s hand was chopped-off by the Nihangs while two other police personnel got injured. ASI Harjeet Singh has been admitted to PGI Chandigarh, said Dinkar Gupta, Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab.

“I have spoken to Director of PGI who has deputed top plastic surgeons of PGI for surgery, which just started. The Nihang group will be arrested and further action will be taken soon,” said Dinkar Gupta, Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab.

The Nihangs fled the scene after the attack, the SSP said, adding efforts are on to arrest them. The incident took place when restrictions are in place in the state because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Chennai: Indigo employee succumbs to coronavirus

0

On Saturday, Indigo Airlines informed that one of its employees had succumbed to the Wuhan Coronavirus infection on Friday. According to reports, the employee was an aircraft maintenance engineer in his mid-50s and was employed with the budget carrier since 2006.

An airline spokesperson was quoted as saying, “We are extremely sorry and saddened by the demise of one of our beloved employees in Chennai due to the infection of Coronavirus. This is a heartbreaking moment for all of us at IndiGo and in this time of sorrow we stand with his family and request that we respect the privacy of our employee and his family.”

All flight operations that were discontinued by Indigo during the nationwide lockdown will be gradually started post the lockdown. Reportedly, on-board meal services will be suspended for a brief period and the airline will run at a maximum load capacity of 50%. Earlier, aviation consultancy CAPR India had informed that the industry will incur a whopping loss of $3.3 -$3.6 billion if all flight operations remain suspended till June end. According to the Ministry of Health, the Wuhan Coronavirus has infected 7,367 people with 715 recoveries and 273 deaths as of 8 a.m. on April 12.

Coronavirus: The ‘scientists’ who have given clean chit to Tablighi Jamaatis for being super spreaders in India had also demanded withdrawal of CAA

On 8th April, a group identifying itself as ‘Indian Scientists’ Response to COVID-19′ (ISRC) issued a public statement giving a clean chit to the Tablighi Jamaat attendees in their role of being super spreaders for Chinese coronavirus in India. Without giving any source for their conclusion, the ‘scientists’ have claimed that there is no data that supports the ‘speculation’ that the Tablighi Jamaatis spiked the coronavirus cases in India.

The group then tries to draw equivalence between the Tablighi Jamaatis who have contributed to over half the total positive cases (about 2/3rd of the total cases in national capital alone) with the Sikh Guru in Punjab who passed away after being tested positive. However, after he was tested positive, 40,000 people were put on quarantine to contain the spread of disease. It is also imperative to note here that those in Punjab who were quarantined did not refuse tests nor did they misbehave with the healthcare workers and authorities, unlike the Tablighi Jamaat attendees who have even refused to get tested claiming that coronavirus is a conspiracy.

In its statement, the ‘scientists’ put the blame on media and politicians for ‘suggesting’ that primary blame of spreading coronavirus in India rests on Tablighis. This, despite the medical tests which prove otherwise. On April 4, 2020, a few days after the Tablighi Jamaatis were discovered at the Nizamuddin Markaz, about 30% of positive cases in India could be traced to Tablighi Jamaat. These are the official numbers of the Union Health Ministry. But the ‘scientists’ have not given any data to back their claims that Tablighi Jamaatis are not responsible for the spread of virus.

An alert Twitter user, Saket, pointed out the dubious and shady members in the group of ‘scientists’ who were quick to give a clean chit to Tablighi Jamaatis despite lack of data (as per their own admission).

The ISRC, by its own admission is a group curated by one Reeteka Sud, who is associated with NIMHANS, Bengaluru and comprises of not only scientists, but also journalists, engineers and ‘social scientists’. Essentially, a group which has given itself a name which sounds like an authority on coronavirus in India comprises of people who may not really know much about it after all.

Further digging into the voluntary group of scientists which now also includes journalists for some reason revealed that many of these same scientists had demanded withdrawal of Citizenship Amendment Act, which fast-tracked Indian citizenship for the persecuted religious minorities in three neighbouring Islamic countries, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

As pointed out by Saket, the same group had claimed that ‘careful exclusion’ of Muslims from the list of persecuted minorities in Islamic countries would ‘strain the pluralistic fabric of India’. It is imperative to note here that the Muslims of these three neighbouring countries can apply for Indian citizenship under existing laws. The CAA was specifically only for the persecuted religious minorities in three neighbouring Islamic countries. It did not affect citizenship procedure for anyone else and neither did it affect citizenship status for Indian Muslims.

United States may extend the H1B Visa for Indians who are stranded in the United States amid the Coronavirus pandemic

0

On request of the Indian government to extend the H1B visas for the Indians stranded in the United States during the grave health crisis across the world due to Wuhan Coronavirus, the United States has been looking into the matter, according to reports.

The Indian government had requested the US to extend the validity of H1B and other visas for Indians who are stuck there amid the outbreak of deadly coronavirus. Foreign Secretary Harsha Vardhan initiated the concern on Wednesday about the Indians during the conversation with US Deputy Secretary of State Stephen E Biegun.

As per reports, India is closely monitoring the developments being made in the process. During the conversation, many key points were discussed such as innovative ways to enhance cooperation to counter and control the deadly epidemic through the development of novel therapies and prophylactics against Wuhan coronavirus. Also ensuring the availability of essential medicines, diagnostic and medical equipment, and sharing the best practice to combat the disease.

As the economy of United States is heading towards a big fall due to the pandemic, the H1B visa holders can face many issues like losing their jobs, and even more distressing will be that they won’t be entitled to any employment benefits from the US government. If an employer revokes the employment of a visa holder, the employee will have to find new employment within 60 days to retain their H1B status.

Indians constitute the maximum number of H1B visa holders in the United States. Due to lockdown in the country renewal of visas has also been delayed.

As the US has been worst hit by the Coronavirus reporting half a million positive cases that too with a sudden surge, the superpower has reported 17 million unemployment in the last four weeks.

Earlier this week India had lifted the ban on the export of Hydroxychloroquine, an old and inexpensive drug used to treat malaria and arthritis, which has emerged as a viable therapeutic solution to treat the Wuhan coronavirus as claimed by many nations.

President Donald Trump thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allowing the export of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) to the United States. Saying that the effort “Will not be forgotten!”.

‘You belong in the dustbin of journalism’: Communists outrage as India Today journalist Rahul Kanwal exposes Islamists spreading Coronavirus

It has been proven beyond doubts that the Tablighi Jamaat Markaz in Delhi Nizammudin has put back India’s effort to battle the coronavirus scourge. The Tablighi Jamaat event defied lockdown orders in Delhi as over 3400 people gathered in the Nizamuddin Markaz building ignoring social distancing norms. Since news of the Jamaat congregation, being a coronavirus cluster broke, police have been regularly rounding up Muslims who are still breaching the lockdown by congregating and hiding in various mosques and madrasas in different parts of the country.

India Today journalist Rahul Kanwal hosted an investigative show on how Madarsa’s in India has emerged as the Coronavirus hotspot. Sharing the advertisement of his upcoming show earlier in the day, Rahul Kanwal took to Twitter Friday to say: “India Today TV reality check finds Madrasas in the capital violating national lockdown rules. Kids crammed into small rooms. No social distancing norms followed. Teacher boasts he’s hiding kids from the police. Another claims he’s paid off local police”.

The show reported how various madarsa’s operators are hiding the headcount of children at a time when social distancing has been deemed as the only way to tackle the coronavirus outbreak in India.

This show has not been received well by the communists on Twitter. Communist leader, Kavita Krishnan was particularly irked by Rahul Kanwal for hosting the show which pointed out how:

  • Many madarsa operators are hiding the total number of children.
  • Some madarsa heads said police have no idea while others claim to have bribed them.
  • Children in these madarsas are not following any social distancing norms

Kavita Krishnan took to twitter and posted a video message, where she lashed out at the India Today journalist Saturday calling his journalism worthy of the dustbin, hours even before the show was aired. Reacting to the promo of the show, she said: “This is a message especially for Rahul Kanwal and India Today who are doing a story at 8 tonight on Madarsa Hotspots. This is during a pandemic. This is during an immense human tragedy that we are witnessing today in the world and in India and here is a man calling himself an Indian journalist. This is not journalism. Behind that nice, smooth face that you are in the same category as the Zee News’ and the Republic TVs of the world and that is where you belong. You belong in the dustbin of journalism. This is not journalism, this is hate-mongering. You are a hate monger and history will remember you, history will judge you and will judge each of your colleagues who remain silent”.

She said that it is absolutely shameful to divide the victims of COVID-19 based on religion. She added that why did the Indian government not alert the people about the pandemic. “Instead of asking the government, you are busy grinding your communal acts. Shame on you,” said the communist leader.

Taking a cue from Kavita Krishnan, IndiaSpend.com editor, Samar Halarnkar also called out the India Today journalist. He also did this without watching the show, as it was yet to be broadcast.

Journalist-cum-troll Vidya Krishnan, who is on the forefront of spreading misinformation on India’s fight against coronavirus, alleged that such programs will lead to stigmatization of the community of COVID19 patients.

The Nizamuddin Markaz of the Tablighi Jamaat in Delhi has been the epicentre of the spread of Wuhan Coronavirus all across India. The role of the Tablighi Jamaat in the spreading of the Wuhan Coronavirus in India came to light when thousands of Jamaatis were found holed up in the Markaz Nizamuddin in violation of all guidelines and orders. Subsequently, numerous people across numerous states of India who had attended the Islamic event at the Markaz Nizamuddin tested positive for the virus. Dozens of incidents of people who have attended the Tablighi Jamaat hiding in mosques and madrasas have emerged, and many of them have tested positive for coronavirus.

Trichy: Coronavirus positive Tablighi Jamaat members hurl their masks towards healthcare workers inside hospital

0

There has been a remarkable consistency in the conduct exhibited by Tablighi Jamaat members across the country. After spitting on the roads of New Delhi, defecating in open in Narela quarantine centre, spitting on the nurses, doctors and healthcare workers in the quarantine facility, now the spiteful Tablighi Jamaat members in Trichy, who have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, have displayed a similar kind of perverse behaviour when they threw their masks away after getting into a heated argument with the hospital staff.

According to a report published in TOI, some of the COVID-19 positive members of the total 36 Tablighi Jamaat members admitted in the Mahatma Gandhi memorial government hospital (MGMGH) demanded to meet the hospital dean Dr K Vanitha to raise their grievances.

However, when they were denied permission to meet the dean, they entered into an altercation with the hospital staff. The hospital administration alleged that some of the patients, knowing fully well that they are suffering from a highly contagious disease, tossed their masks down, dangerously close to a nurse.

The matter was brought to the notice of Assistant Police Commissioner (ACP) Srirangam Range K Ramachandran and later to the Trichy collector S Sivarasu about the malevolent tendencies of the Tablighi Jamaat patients admitted in the hospital.

In an interview, Collector Sivarasu asserted that he has arranged for the counselling of the coronavirus patients in the hospital. “I have organised a counselling programme for those patients to describe them about the nature of treatment and the necessity for them to cooperate with doctors. They will be clearly informed that they are accountable for the disruption caused to the healthcare workers tending to them,” he said.

T Abdul Raheem, the TMMK Trichy deputy secretary, who was brought in to mediate, stated that the irate Tablighi Jamaat members threw their masks down near a nurse, claiming they are very healthy and they did not need them. The decision of the hospital administration to bring in two elderly women relatives of two positive coronavirus patients to the hospital sparked off the protest from the Tablighi Jamaat members.

The Jamaat members had demanded that since both of them were senior citizens and there was no one take care of them in the hospital, they should be instead home quarantined, Raheem said. “I have pacified them and they have agreed to cooperate with the doctors following which the elderly women were brought to the hospital this afternoon,” Raheem said.

The role of Tablighi Jamaat in spreading the coronavirus came to the fore when 10 members who had attended the congregation organised by the orthodox Islamic organisation in Markaz Nizamuddin in mid-March tested positive. Tablighi Jamaat has fast emerged as the raging hotspot of the Wuhan Coronavirus after cases of positive coronavirus who had attended the event were registered from numerous states of India. Muslim clerics of Tablighi Jamaat had organised a congregation in violation of the government’s lockdown orders, providing a conducive environment for the novel coronavirus to proliferate. As per conservative estimates, the congregation organised by Tablighi Jamaat was attended by more than 2000 people, both from several parts of the country as well as from abroad. It was a herculean task for the law enforcement agencies to trace down the event attendees, however, many are still on the run and have refused to come out.
