After India banned them over privacy concerns, TikTok claims it will pull out of Hong Kong due to ‘new Chinese law’

Days after India banned TikTok over privacy and security concerns, the video sharing app owned by Chinese company ByteDance, has claimed it will pull out of Hong Kong Market due to ‘new Chinese law’. As per reports, TikTok made this ‘decision’ after Chinese government changed some data privacy law wherein Hong Kong companies would have to share user data with the Chinese government. TikTok has claimed that since it does not share user data with government, the alleged change in law will not make it possible for them to continue operations.

It must be noted that India had banned TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps over privacy and security concerns in June this year. TikTok India had also claimed that the company does not share user data with the Chinese government. Now, TikTok has claimed that since it does not share user data with Chinese government, it will have to pull out of Hong Kong after the communist government in China introduced a new law by which would track online activity.

Interestingly, while TikTok had millions of users in India, as of September last year, TikTok had only 1,50,000 users in Hong Kong. As per the company, it was a small and unprofitable market. Reuters reported that TikTok was not accessible from mainland China and hence the parent company ByteDance operates Douyin, a China-specific video sharing app.

“I will kill all Hindus”: Pakistani man makes his kid display bigotry in all glory over construction of temple in Islamabad. Watch video

The controversy over construction of temple in Islamabad took another turn on Tuesday after a video surfaced on social media where a young kid, about 5-6 year old, was seen spewing hate and giving death threats to Hindus. In a video shared by Twitter handle ‘Ex-Muslims of North America’, a Pakistani man is seen taking pride in the venom spewed by his really young sons.

In the video, one can see the man greets his ‘brothers and sister’ and tells them that his son has a message. The camera then pans to the kids, one of who says, “Khan sahab, agar Islamabad mein mandir bana to yeh yaad rakhna, main un Hinduon ko chun chun ke marunga. Samajh gaye? Allah Hafiz. (Mr Imran Khan, if a temple is constructed in Islamabad, then remember, I will kill all Hindus one by one. Understand? Allah Hafiz.)” The other, much younger kid next to him, too chimes in and endorses. The man identifying himself as the father of the kids then says, “See, now it is up to you.

Islamabad temple controversy

Islamists in Pakistan had recently opposed the construction of Shri Krishna temple in Islamabad, the country’s capital. A fatwa was also issued against its construction. Other than the fatwa, a petition was also filed in the Islamabad High Court against the construction of the temple. Later, the boundary wall which was constructed was demolished by an Islamist who has taken a vow that he will never let a Hindu temple be constructed there. Eventually, the Hindu Panchayat decided against constructing of the temple.

Theatre of absurd: Hateful Hansal Mehta launches online petition asking Amitabh Bachchan to unfollow hateful KRK on Twitter

The untimely demise of Sushant Singh Rajput reignited the debate over the pervasive nepotism that afflicts Bollywood. Many laid the blame of his suicide on prominent individuals like Karan Johar and Alia Bhatt for perpetuating the culture of nepotism in the industry and being responsible for shunting out the talented “outsiders”, forcing them to take the extreme step of giving up their lives.

While Karan Johar has been widely criticized for being accountable for Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, filmmaker Hansal Mehta, who had earlier taken up the cudgels for Shaheen Bagh protests, in a bizarre request, signed an online petition requesting Amitabh Bachchan to unfollow KRK on Twitter for his rude and mean tweets against the Kai Po Che actor.

Petition filed by Hansal Mehta asking Amitabh Bachchan to unfollow KRK on Twitter

The petition floated by Mehta said that being an iconic actor, role model and respected public figure with a huge fan following, it does not behove Amitabh Bachchan to follow someone like Kamaal R Khan alias KRK, who is a self-proclaimed actor, critic and a social media influencer, known for making derogatory and vulgar remarks against films, actors, directors and producers.

Mehta draws a distinction between the two personalities, exalting Amitabh Bachchan as a public figure who embodies dignity, empathy and humility while debasing KRK as a churlish individual, notorious for his abusive tweets and videos and who has made a “business out of trolling, abuse and mental harassment”.

“It is therefore very disturbing that somebody of Mr Bachchan’s stature actually follows this toxic social media presence. By following him alone Mr. Bachchan provides indirect endorsement for the hate and abuse unleashed by KRK on hapless industry persons through his ‘reviews’ and slanderous tweets. Case in point is the young Sushant Singh Rajput who tragically passed away a few weeks ago. For the past 3 years or so KRK had made it a point to target and post highly offensive material on the late actor,” the online petition read.

Mehta also highlighted the prevailing toxicity that besets the film and entertainment industry. “A lot is toxic in the times we live in. Some of that toxicity exists within the film industry and entertainment media too. Blind items, vicious bashing and a lot of trash masquerading as news adorn tabloids. It has to be fought. Not with whataboutery. One step at a time,” Mehta said in a tweet following his request to sign the online petition asking Amitabh Bachchan to unfollow KRK.

KRK tries to take advantage of Sushant Singh Rajput’s death

Kamaal R Khan, popularly known as KRK, is a self-proclaimed actor, critic, who prides himself in making derogatory and spiteful videos against popular actors, directors and producers, in a bid to gain cheap publicity, tried to ride on the sympathy wave that rose following the demise of Sushant Singh Rajput.

In the wake of Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, Kamaal R Khan, who had been severely critical of the actor in past, tried to profit off the tragedy by posting eulogising tweets and videos in solidarity with Sushant Singh Rajput, against those who have been perpetuating the culture of nepotism in Bollywood.

While in the latest video, KRK mourns the death of Sushant Singh Rajput, in his earlier videos, he was seen asking producers like Ekta Kapoor, Sajid Nadiadwala and others to not patronize Sushant, claiming he was a terrible actor. The self-proclaimed critic had posted particularly nasty tweets against the actor while he was alive, a collage of which was also shared along with the petition floated by Hansal Mehta. Consequently, the disparaging tweets against Sushant Singh Rajput, mentioned in the collage have been deleted by KRK.

Hansal Mehta takes up the cudgel for Shaheen Bagh protesters

While Mehta tries to draw attention towards the hatred that exists in the film industry, it is worth noting that Mehta had been one of those Bollywood filmmakers who had come in defence of the Shaheen Bagh protests that eventually culminated into full-blown anti-Hindu riots in the national city in the last week of February this year.

In response to Vivek Agnihotri’s incisive tweet claiming that the Shaheen Bagh had transformed into an Islamic conversion centre and a hideout for all kinds of criminals, Mehta quickly came into the defence of the thuggish protesters at Shaheen Bagh, asking Vivek to embrace Islam to understand what the religion stands for.

“Unfortunately twitter has become a haven for hate-mongering cowards like you. I sincerely hope you get converted to Islam and you get to understand what the religion really stands for. In fact, I wish you’d first understand Hinduism so that you do not continue tarnishing it,” Mehta tweeted.

Significantly, Mehta defended the Shaheen Bagh protests, which had been the plank from where the deadly anti-Hindu riots engulfing the national capital were engineered.

Russian journalist convicted for “justifying terrorism” asked to pay fine of $6,950, prosecutor demands six-year imprisonment

A Russian journalist on Monday was convicted by a court in the city of Pskov on charges of “justifying terrorism” and ordered to pay a fine amounting to 5,00,000 rubbles (approximately $6950) in the case. Prosecutors have also requested the court to send the journalist, Svetlana Prokopyeva, to six-years of imprisonment.

The verdict has been widely criticised calling it the Russian government’s attempt to trample freedom of the press. The journalist, speaking about a 2018 incident had reportedly criticised the federal government for its coercive policies, arguing that the Russian Government gives very little opportunity to the young people to express their discontentment, which eventually leads to despair and disappointment amidst the youth against the administration.

The Russian journalist insists that she only did her work as a journalist

While opinionating, the journalist had spoken about the October 2018 suicide attack in which a 17-year-old Russian man blew himself up at the entrance of the office of the Federal Security Service (FSB), in the northern city of Arkhangelsk. Along with the 17-year-old youth, 3 FSB officers had also been injured in the incident.

“I am not afraid to criticize law enforcement or tell the security organs that they are wrong,” the journalist said in her final statement in court on Friday. “Because I know how really horrific it will become if I don’t speak out — if no one speaks out.” She insisted that she only did her work as a journalist.

“I did not do anything that was beyond the framework of my professional duty,” Prokopyeva told the court “And that is not a crime.” Prokopyeva said she would appeal the verdict.

Demanding the acquittal of the Russian journalist, many human rights groups and media outlets and watchdogs have criticised the verdict calling it an attempt to suppress the rights of freedom of speech and expression.

Russian govt denies charges that the judgement was an attack on media freedom

Asked about the verdict, President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, denied that the verdict represented an attack on media freedom. Peskov said the ruling reflected “legal nuances” related to Russia’s counterterrorism law.

Slain DSP Devendra Mishra had in March warned then SSP about a possible attack by Vikas Dubey and his nexus with police

There have been a series of revelations in the case against the dreaded gangster Vikas Dubey who had in an ambush, killed eight police personnel, including Deputy SP Devendra Mishra, in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur on July 2 night. An old letter, dated March 14, 2020, of Bilhaur SP (late) Devendra Mishra to the then SSP Kanpur, Anant Dev Tiwari is now going viral on the internet.

In the letter, Devendra Mishra, who was martyred in the ambush, had expressed his apprehensions about a possible major attack from gangster Vikas Dubey. He had also hinted on a possible nexus between the hardened criminal and the police.

Letter by martyred Deputy SP Devendra Mishra raises questions on Chaubeypur police’s intention and laxity

In the letter, Mishra had warned the then SSP that the station officer of Chaubeypur police station Vinay Tiwari’s inaction could lead to something major. He had, in the letter, accused Vinay Tiwari of shielding gangster Vikas Dubey. The slain cop had raised apprehensions on Vinay Tiwari’s integrity saying that he was sympathetic towards the gangster.

Officials now admit in private that Mishra was regularly complaining about Tiwari to then SSP. It is pertinent to note here, that the then SSP Anant Dev Tiwari, who had not paid heed to late Deputy SP Devendra Mishra’s repeated complaints against SO Tiwari is now in the Special Task Force of Uttar Pradesh Police, which is probing the Kanpur encounter case.

After this purported letter went viral on social media people are questioning as to why the then SSP Anant Dev Tiwari did not act against SO Vinay Tiwari or initiate required action against Vikas Dubey whom Mishra described as “one of most hardened criminals”.

According to a Hindustan Times report, Devendra Mishra had urged for an inquiry against the station officer of Chaubeypur police station Vinay Tiwari eight times before sending his special report to the SSP the ninth time based on his findings. It is to be noted that SO Vinay Tiwari had fled from the encounter scene on Friday night. He was suspended on Saturday and an inquiry against him had been initiated.

Apart from SO Vinay Tiwari, Kanpur police had suspended another three police officers, namely, sub-inspectors Krishna Kumar Sharma and Kunwarpal and a police constable Rajeev after their suspicious activities linked to Vikas Dubey surfaced. All three were deployed in Chaubeypur police station. The investigators think that these three could be the moles who informed Dubey about police movement.

Hardened criminal Vikas Dubey had set up an ambush following a tip-off from someone from Choubeypur Police station

On the intervening night of July 2-3, three teams of UP police comprising 30 police personnel went to nab gangster Vikas Dubey, who was allegedly tipped-off about the raid in advance by someone from Choubeypur Police station. Dubey, along with 50-60 of his gang members, positioned atop his own house. The moment police personnel reached his house, they opened fire at them.

Shockingly, the criminals had stationed a JCB machine on the road to block the police team. Taking advantage of the altitude and dark surroundings, they managed to kill eight police officers. As per the witness, no one from Choubeypur police station fired any shot.

In the aftermath of the incident, the administration which demolished Dubey’s Kanpur house revealed that the gangster had hidden arms and ammunition inside bunker and walls of his house. It is being reported that Vikas Dubey and his henchmen were in possession of dangerous weapons like the AK-47.

Twenty-five teams are aggressively searching for Vikas Dubey since the attack happened.

Shiv Sainiks to launch ‘chaddi-baniyan’ protest against their own govt in Maharashtra to oppose inflated electricity bills

The residents in Maharashtra are facing a double whammy of a raging pandemic that has induced a financial crisis in the state and inflated electricity bills for the three months of lockdown. In opposition to the outrageous electricity bills that the residents of Maharashtra have been receiving, Shiv Sainiks have decided to stage a protest against the Uddhav Thackeray government by donning briefs and vests and visiting the electricity office in Vasai west tomorrow noon, says a report published in Lokmat.

The galloping coronavirus in the country had the economy cratering, especially the state of Maharashtra, which is the worst affected state from the scourge of COVID-19. A raft of people have seen their jobs vanish, their savings depleted and their loved ones in the grips of the deadly contagion. Amidst this gloom, the exorbitant electricity bills have only added to the anxiety of the citizens who are left befuddled by their outstanding due. Several residents have claimed that they have received 10 times more than their usual bill.

It is pertinent to note that the unique agitation as planned by the Shiv Sainiks will be carried out against the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in the state, in which Shiv Sena is also one of the alliance partners. Uddhav Thackeray, the Shiv Sena supremo, is also the chief minister of the state. The Shiv Sainiks wearing briefs and vests are going to visit the electricity office to protest against the exaggerated electricity bills that people of Maharashtra have been receiving in the wake of the phased unlocking of the economy after a stringent lockdown of almost 3 months.

Outsize electricity bills in Maharashtra

There has been a torrent of complaints on social media from consumers about inflated power bills for the month of June. Complaints are pouring in against power distribution companies in Maharashtra.

The power distribution companies such as Adani Electricity have issued multiple press releases to explain why the electricity bills are so high. Recently, a spokesperson for Adani Electricity reasoned that the high consumption in lockdown when people were working from home during the summer months was one of the reasons why the bills are so high.

The power distribution companies have alleged that the bills issued in June include the consumption of units in May as well as differential consumption over-approximation of March and April. This is leading to higher charges on the bills.

A spokesperson for Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) said, “In case of any fault in meter readings and calculations from our side, we will rectify the electricity bill and the amount will get adjusted in the next month’s bill.”

Other states have adopted different methods to derive at electricity bills during lockdown months. While some of the states have waived off the bills during the lockdown period, others who have taken the average consumption of the users to arrive at the charges for June, are facing similar complaints of inflated electricity bills from consumers.

Arunachal Pradesh: Pastor burns idol of tribal Goddess Ain Donyi in the name of Jesus, calls her ‘power of the enemy’

The issue of hurting religious sentiments has again surfaced in Arunachal Pradesh. Religious and cultural units of East Kameng district have filed an FIR against the pastor of the Pentecostal Church of Seppa, Chatung Sopung and Tali Langro, among others for burning the symbol of the Supreme Goddess Ain Donyi (Mother of the Sun). They said that the actions of the pastor had hurt their religious sentiments.

A user named Pai Dawe shared the video and FIR on social media and said, “Whosoever tries undermining indigenous Faith sentiment and believe shall have to face the law of the land. This is why we always advocate for the strict implementation of the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act. 1978. Such brutal proselytization are the result of the lackadaisical attitude of State Govt on the preservation of Indigenous Faiths and culture.” He added that the time has come for the state’s legislatures to implement and execute the act thoughtfully.

In the FIR, the complainant said that the clergy’s action violates sections 3, 4 and 5 of the religious and freedom act of Arunachal Pradesh. The FIR mentions other sections of IPC, including 295A and 298. When the issue was raised on social media, OpIndia tried to contact the president of IFCSAP EK Unit Khyan Sonam, but he was supposedly busy in another meeting. OpIndia also called Carling Dolo, chairman of NIFCS EK Unique, but he did not answer the call.

On gathering more information, OpIndia found some videos that were shared on social media. In those videos, the pastor and his followers were mocking other religions in the name of Jesus. They burnt down the icons and idols of Ain Donyi in the name of Jesus. The pastor was heard saying in the video, “In the name of Jesus, we destroy the powers of all the enemies.”

After the pastor calls for burning the idols and symbols, a man put flammable substance and set them on fire. Those who were present at the scene supported him by throwing dry grass and leaves on the idols. The pastor kept saying “burnt in the name of God” while setting the idols and symbols on fire.

Bengal: 13 arrested for violent clash between TMC and Communists during protest against TMC for ‘misappropriation of funds meant for Amphan victims’

On Sunday afternoon, the West Bengal police had reportedly arrested 13 people in connection to the deaths of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker and a socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) member, following a violent clash between the two sides at Kultali in South 24 Parganas in West Bengal.

The violent clash took place at the backdrop of a protest by SUCI against misappropriation of funds, meant for the victims of cyclone Amphan, by the TMC. During the scuffle on Friday, a 46-year-old TMC leader Ashwini Manna was killed. On Saturday, the house of one 58-year-old Sudhanshu Jana was set on fire and his body was found hanging at the house. About 40 houses were vandalised and set ablaze on the same day.

As per locals, there were escalated tensions between the TMC and SUCI after the former gained power in the Maipur-Baikunthapur panchayat. As per reports, two members each from the CPM and SUCI had switched over to the TMC that helped the latter’s secure majority in the panchayat.

Political slugfest and police action

Reportedly, the TMC had blamed SUCI for the murder of Ashwini Manna whereas SUCI maintained that the lynching was the handiwork of the agitated villagers. As for Sudhanshu Jana, SUCI claimed that he was killed whereas Trinamool alleged that it was a case of suicide. 13 people had been arrested in connection with the case. They included 5 SUCI leaders and 8 Trinamool workers. Cops had also arrested TMC leader Pintu Pradhan with regard to the crime.

A 12-hour bandh was scheduled to be held on Monday by the SUCI against the alleged murder of their party member. SUCI emphasised that the party would continue to protest against the ‘brutalities’ of the current political dispensation. Rubbishing the claims, TMC General Secretary Partha Chatterjee said that the Opposition was criticising the reform undertaken by the government. “We do not waste our time on these issues,” he was quoted as saying.

SCUI makes change of plans

In light of the violent clash, SUCI had cancelled their protest against corruption in the disbursement of Cyclone Amphan funds. Reportedly, the party had plans to surround the BDO officer and hold demonstrations with 5000 people. SUCI district committee member Prakash Maity said, “The violence in Maipith forced us to postpone the programme and we have switched from the issue of Amphan to the murder of our district committee member Sudhanshu Jana.

We will launch the movement against Amphan aid graft after this situation gets normal. Many of our party workers’ homes were set on fire,” Maity added. CPM MLA Ramsankar Haldar informed that demonstrations would continue but in gram panchayats, other than Mapith.

Corruption in Cyclone Amphan Relief

Earlier, TMC leader and panchayat member Swapan Kumar Ghatu was was gheraoed by the residents of Kailashpur village in South 24 Paraganas and held hostage at a local school playground for illegally receiving compensation amount, originally meant for the victims of Cyclone Amphan.

The locals had alleged that the TMC politician had siphoned off relief funds by listing his family members as the beneficiaries. Later talking to media, Swapan Kumar Ghatu conceded that there were anomalies in compensation distribution. He said that there were some mistakes in preparing the list of beneficiaries, and he apologised for the same.

‘TMC goons vandalised my car, attacked our party workers unprovoked’, says BJP MP Arjun Singh

On Sunday, a clash reportedly broke out between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers in the Haldibari area of Halisahar city in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal. Amidst the scuffle, the car of Arjun Singh, the BJP MP from Barrackpore, and his security guards were vandalised.

As per the report, several bikes and the party office of Trinamool Congress was set ablaze. The fire service was called in to douse the fire. During the violent clash, people from both sides sustained injuries. On receiving information about the incident, the police reached the spot and brought the situation under control. “There was chaos in the area. Both sides are accusing each other. We are investigating the matter. The situation is now under control,” Barrackpore District Commissioner (South) Ajay Thakur was quoted as saying.

Arjun Singh accuses TMC

Reportedly, the BJP MP had visited the house of Raja Dutta, the former deputy Pradhan, on Sunday night in the Haldibari area. Arjun Singh was accompanied by other party leaders and workers. Locals informed that the chaos began at around 8 pm at the Haldibari junction. Reportedly, several cars were vandalised during the chaos.

Locals rushed indoors and shut their houses to protect themselves from coming in the line of fire. Arjun Singh had alleged that his car and that of his security guards’ was damaged by TMC workers. He claimed that the mob was led by TMC politician Subodh Adhikari. “His men attacked us in front of the police,” the BJP MP remarked.

TMC makes counter-claims

The Trinamool Congress had alleged that the scuffle broke out after the car of Subodh Adhikari was vandalised. According to Naihati MLA Partha Bhowmik, Adhikari was returning home from Naihati to Halisahar when his car was supposedly stopped and attacked by BJP workers in the Haldibari area. He further claimed that the security guard of Arjun Singh had assaulted the people accompanying Adhikari.

“Arjun’s car was vandalised by the agitated local people,” he claimed. TMC Minister Jyotipriya Mallick said that BJP was playing with the politics of violence and had set their party office on fire.

Arjun Singh alleges assassination attempt

Earlier, in a letter to the West Bengal Governor, Arjun Singh had alleged that the Joint Commissioner of Police Ajay Thakur attempted to assassinate him and his family on May 14 on the pretext of cross-firing under the instructions of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Arjun Singh said that the police officer came with 35 persons, and 2 of them are renowned miscreants.

He alleged that those two persons had pointed their guns aiming towards him from a distance, but they didn’t fire. “I have never been afraid to die. In the upcoming days, such officers of Mamata Banerjee will be punished under the law”, he was quoted as saying.
