ISIS terrorists arrested in Maharashtra have been sharing ‘DIY kits’ with contacts, have taken ‘oath of allegiance’ to serve caliphate: What NIA chargesheet says

In a significant revelation, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday said that members of the Maharashtra Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terror module had been sharing “DIY (Do It Yourself) kits” with their contacts committed to propagating the extremist and violent ideology of the global terrorist organisation within India.

The accused were also found to be raising funds to finance their terror plans and designs, as mentioned by the NIA in its charge-sheet against six persons to tighten its noose further around the ISIS terror conspiracy in India.

“NIA investigations so far in the Maharashtra ISIS terror module case (NIA RC-02/2023/NIA/MUM) have revealed a larger conspiracy with international linkages and the involvement of foreign-based ISIS handlers,” states the charge-sheet

“The investigations have also exposed a complex network of individuals committed to propagating the extremist and violent ideology of ISIS within India.”

Those chargesheeted have been identified as Tabish Nasser Siddiqui of Mumbai, Zulfikar Ali Barodawala alias Lalabhai, Sharjeel Shaikh and Aakif Ateeque Nachan of Borivali-Padgha, as well as Zubair Noor Mohammad Shaikh alias Abu Nusaiba and Adnanali Sarkar of Pune.

As per the NIA, all the accused are members of the proscribed ISIS outfit and had “hatched a conspiracy to further the terrorist activities of organisation, with the intention to strike fear and terror amongst the people and threaten the security of India its secular ethos and culture and the democratic system of governance.”

Two of these accused, Zulfikar Ali Barodawala and Aakif Ateeque Nachan, were earlier also chargesheeted in the Pune ISIS module case for fabrication of IEDs for triggering blasts.

The accused, chargesheeted before the NIA Special Court, Mumbai, under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Indian Penal Code, were engaged in actively propagating the violent and extremist ideology of the ISIS and in carrying out acts preparatory to terrorist violence through recruitment of individuals to the organisation and its cause.

Two accused, Tabish and Zulfikar, had taken an oath of allegiance (Bayath) to the self-styled Khalifa (leader) of the ISIS.

The NIA Mumbai Branch also found the accused in possession of incriminating material related to Hijrah to Syria, along with propaganda magazines like ‘Voice of Hind’ and ‘Voice of Khurasan’ published by the ISIS.

“Further, the accused had been sharing DIY (Do It Yourself) kits with their contacts. The accused were also found to be raising funds to finance their terror plans and designs, as per NIA investigations,” said the anti-terror agency in the charge-sheet.

The case was registered by NIA Mumbai on June 28 this year against Tabish Nasser Siddiqui and others, following information received by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) regarding a conspiracy hatched by them to disturb the unity, integrity, security and sovereignty of the country, and to wage a war against the government of India by promoting the terrorist activities of ISIS.

Further investigations in the case are continuing in accordance with the provisions of section 173(8) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

It is noted that ISIS, also known by the names Islamic State (IS), Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL), Daish, Islamic State in Khorasan Province (ISKP), ISIS Wilayat Khorasan, and Islamic State of Iraq and Sham Khorasan (ISIS-K), has been operating through various modules to spread terror across India.

Did you know that Sam Pitroda was once accused of favouring his private companies by misusing his govt position? Read details

One might say it is a fall from grace for Congress leader Sam Pitroda given that he has been in news for wrong reasons many times. Then again, was the grace ever there to begin with? For starters, did you know that the Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress, Sam Pitroda allegedly cost the country a whopping Rs 150 crore between 1984 to 1990 because of false promises? He was then the Chairman of the Telecom Commission and secretary of department of telecom.

Who is Sam Pitroda?

Sam Pitroda, short for Satyan Gangaram Pitroda, is the Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress. He was born in Orissa’s Titilagarh in 1942. He moved to the US in 1964. He has been close to the Congress leadership since the time of Indira Gandhi.

He met the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1981 to discuss the development of telecom sector in India. In 1987, he became advisor to Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, son of Indira Gandhi, and launched six technology missions while serving as the Chairman of Telecom Commission and secretary of department of telecom.

Pitroda did not want to leave US to serve India

His loyalty to the Gandhi-Congress family continues ever since. In his own words, Pitroda has a “bond with Rahul Gandhi”. But loyalty to Gandhi-Congress is all that it has been over the years and his credits over telecom should not be mistaken as his love for the country itself.

In a report, Pitroda said that giving up his US citizenship to assume the role of Minister of State in the Rajiv Gandhi-led government was “a most painful decision”.

As per the report, Pitroda said, “The US has given me all the tools I need to do what I do.” Pitroda was asked by Rajiv Gandhi to become technology minister in his government.

Corruption allegations against Sam Pitroda

In 1984, Pitroda formed C-DoT under the Rajiv Gandhi government. It stands for Centre for Development of Telematics. In 1990, 6 years later, major allegations of financial irregularities surfaced.

It was alleged that C-DoT was used as a channel to further the interests of Sam Pitroda’s companies in the US, to recruit his preferred candidates to key positions, and of giving false progress reports about C-DoT.

Pitroda was accused of flouting government norms while importing equipment for the telecom project. Deals were struck between two fo his companies namely Martek and Micro Technology Inc and C-DoT clearing violating the rule the government servants cannot award contracts to their own companies.

Two of Pitroda’s close aides namely GB Meemansi, executive director of C-DoT, and DR Mahajan, director, C-DoT, were sacked by the government. At this time, the Nambiar Committee, set-up to asses C-DoT’s performance, had released its report.

The report was signed by 9 members. Meemansi and Mahajan had submitted a dissenting report. Moreover, the two aides of Pitroda were accused of having hand-picked the C-DoT staff so that they would not go against them.

What’s mind-blowing is that Sam Pitroda was at the heart of the very bureaucratic structure during his heydays which he would go on to criticise years later to form a narrative about his struggle to becoming the messiah of telecom in India.

Pitroda was the secretary of the department of telecom. As per government procedure, the Nambiar Committee report had to be examined by the Ministry of Communications before being tabled in the Parliament.

A report quoted a then senior telecom official as saying, “But how can Unnikrishnan allow Pitroda as secretary of the department to examine a report which is against him?”

Owing to this, the Minister of Communications, Unnikrishnan, could not table the Nambiar report in the Parliament. Although the report dismissed the charges of financial irregularities.

Pitroda was given special privileges by Congress govt

Moreover, reports point out that Pitroda enjoyed special power privilege unlike other secretaries. Pitroda was reportedly not bound by the services rules and he could not be removed from his position because he was appointed as Telecom Commission chairman by a cabinet resolution.

Interestingly, the terms and conditions of his appointment were not available in the government files. All that the government could do in order to hold him accountable was by filing a charge sheet.

As for the Nambiar report, it did criticise C-DoT for not being able to start the commercial production of 40,000 line exchange by 1987 as promised in 1984.

The note had even stated that C-DoT would develop an exchange with a capacity of 800,000 busy-hour call attempts, which was the number of calls an exchange could handle during peak hours at the time.

Instead, the report pointed, C-DoT had to begin work all over again in order to design the large electronic switching system. Forget the 40,000 and 800,000 line, even the 5,000-line exchange was not expected to be ready for commercial production before 1992-93.

The two and half year delay cost the Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) a revenue loss of Rs 150 crore. Pitroda’s close aides too accepted that C-DoT was behind schedule.

In the dissent report, it was admitted that C-DoT had still not developed many crucial components for the large exchange including the central module which connected different exchanges to each other and the input-output processor which stored billing information in the computer.

The organisation reduced the specifications for busy-hour call attempts from 2.8 lakhs in 1986 to 1.8 lakh in 1990 saying that “the country does not require such an exchange today”.

Pitroda had reportedly said that he had only promised to begin field trials by 1987 with the goal of commercial production, a fact which he reportedly claimed was misinterpreted.

Pitroda was accused of helping his friends get richer

Other suspicious activities included licensing more than 36 manufacturers to produce instrument which was not part of the mandate, below capacity work by C-DoT manufacturers, 11 foreign consultants appointed most of whom were close friends of Pitroda to help develop software.

A close friend of Pitroda from US, Roy Mehta, was paid Rs 41.64 lakh as a consultancy fee. Rs 1.29 crore were paid to foreign firms and individuals for consultancy.

The Telecom Commission did not take any action against French firm Alcatel despite the latter refusing to upgrade the technology it had supplied to India free of cost as per an agreement signed in 1982.

An agreement worth a staggering Rs 4 crore was signed by C-DoT with US-based Trans Tech for the development of cellular phones even though Pitroda himself had criticised the project as elitist.

Another report in the Economic and Political Weekly dated 1989 accused the telecom sector under the Rajiv Gandhi government as elitist.

Elitist nature of Sam Pitroda even when working with the Govt

An excerpt from the report reads, “The elitist orientation of the management of the telephone services was indeed embodied in the very charter of the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam. This is very much in tune with the overall development philosophy of the present establishment which, besides its many other features, has a marked weakness for spectacles and extravaganzas at selected points while the national scene as a whole remains drab and depressing.”

The report further reads, “Sam Pitroda himself is known to enjoy the confidence and support of the prime minister. His position as the prime minister’s technology advisor with the rank of minister of state has given him stature and clout in the ruling coterie. His appointment as secretary of the department of telecommunication by virtue of which he is also the chairman of the Telecommunications Commission is, however, protocol-wise rather odd.”

The report pointed out how Pitroda’s appointment to the rank of a minister while serving as a departmental secretary was an “unconventional arrangement”. Moreover, while Pitroda was appointing foreign manufacturers and consultants and furthering the interests of his companies, he was a strong opponent of importing telephone systems from diverse sources including Japan, France and Sweden.

Further on, the report states that Pitroda readily admits that he has little understanding of Indian society and is not even a serious student of the social and political forces at play in India.

8 Indian Navy veterans whose death sentences were reduced to jail terms can serve their sentence in Indian prison due to a 2014 India-Qatar agreement: Senior Lawyer

The former Indian Naval officers whose conviction has been reduced to jail terms in Qatar can serve their sentence in Indian prison due to an earlier agreement between New Delhi and Doha, senior advocate Adish Aggarwala said on Thursday.

Aggarwala who is also the President of Supreme Court Bar Association also thanked the Indian government for the continued support to the detained officers.

The Qatari Court on Thursday commuted the death penalty sentence of eight ex-Indian naval officers arrested last year in the Dahra Global case and commuted the sentence to jail terms.

“We thank Modi government for providing all assistance to our eight former Navy personnel who were awarded death sentence who were earlier given death penalty…today, the sentence has been reduced. They still have a right to appeal to the Court of Seccession, which is the highest court of Qatar,” Aggarwala said in a video statement.

He further said that the 2014 agreement between India and Qatar allows them to bring back prisoners imprisoned in each other’s jail to serve the remaining sentence back home.

“Even if they don’t get any relief, these Navy officers can be brought back to India as per the agreement between India and Qatar. There is an agreement of 2014, where the prisoners can be brought back from one country to other between these two countries to undergo these sentence announced by the foreign court,” the senior advocate said.

He added, “So, the government of India can bring back the officers and they will be required to undergo sentence in Indian prison. I am certain the government will provide more assistance to them”.

Former Navy Deputy Chief Vice Admiral MS Pawar called this a matter of “great relief”

and thanked the “relentless efforts” of Indian Embassy in Qatar and the Ministry of External Affairs.

“It is a matter of great relief that the death sentence awarded to 8 Navy veterans has been commuted by the Court of Appeals in Qatar…thanks to the relentless efforts of the families of the veterans and the rock-solid support provided to them by the Embassy in Qatar, the Ministry of External Affairs in India…and at the highest political levels in the country,” Pawar said in a video statement.

He also thanked the Qatari legal system and authorities for their “benevolent approach” adding that India should now try to bring back the Navy veterans.

“We still have miles to go before the innocents are brought back. I have no doubt about their innocence and they are perhaps victims of circumstances…I have no doubt that they will never indulge in any unprofessional conduct that would bring disrepute and disgrace to the Navy and the nation,” he further said.

Another former Navy personnel, Vice Admiral Anil Chawla (retd.) also called it a matter of relief and expressed gratefulness towards the Emir of Qatar.

“This news has come as a huge relief to the entire country as well as the naval community… We are grateful to the Emir of Qatar for having commuted the death penalty, and also to the Government of India, especially for the personal intervention of Prime Minister Modi…We hope the officers are released as early as possible and sent back to India,” Chawla told ANI.

Earlier in the day, MEA also said that the detailed judgement in the case is awaited and are in close touch with the legal team in Qatar.

“We have noted the verdict today of the Court of Appeal of Qatar in the Dahra Global case, in which the sentences have been reduced,” the MEA stated.

“The detailed judgement is awaited. We are in close touch with the legal team as well as the family members to decide on the next steps. Our Ambassador to Qatar and other officials were present in the Court of Appeal today, along with the family members. We have stood by them since the beginning of the matter and we will continue to extend all consular and legal assistance. We will also continue to take up the matter with the Qatari authorities,” it added.

Former diplomat Bhaswati Mukherjee said that there still lies hope when Emir of Qatar will exercise his pardon in the holy month of Ramzan in March.

“My heart goes out to those families who must have been going through mental torture…now there is hope that when the Emir will exercise his pardon, which will be in March during the holy month of Ramzan…they will be able to come back to India safely…a great triumph for Indian diplomacy and our Prime Minister,” she said in a video statement.

The eight Indian nationals have been imprisoned in Qatar since October 2022 and were accused of allegedly spying on a submarine programme. The retired naval personnel were sentenced to death by a Qatar court on charges that have not yet been made public officially.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani on the sidelines of the COP28 summit in Dubai and discussed bilateral partnership and the “well-being of the Indian community” living in Qatar.

0

On Thursday (28th December), Congress leader Rahul Gandhi addressed a huge rally in Maharashtra’s Nagpur citing the occasion of the Congress’ 139th foundation day. Speaking at the party’s ‘Hain Taiyyar Hum’ rally, he stated that the Congress will conduct a caste census if it comes to power at the Centre post the Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

During his address, the 53-year-old Congress leader also slammed the central government over the unemployment rate. He said unemployment in the country has peaked at its highest point in the last 40 years. Gandhi also asserted that there is a war going on between two ideologies in the country and the upcoming general elections will be a battle of two ideologies.

“Unlike the BJP, even a junior Congress worker can question and disagree with top party leaders,” he said.

Gandhi also claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is devoid of democracy. “Unlike the BJP, even a junior Congress worker can question and disagree with top party leaders,” he told the media. The Wayanad MP additionally stated that Vice Chancellors are chosen not on merit but because they belong to a particular organization.

The Congress Party launched its campaign for the Lok Sabha elections next year in Maharashtra with the ‘Hain Tayyar Hum’ rally. The event was attended by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and many top party leaders from Maharashtra and other states, but former President Sonia Gandhi and General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra did not attend the rally.

Xiaomi unveils its first electric car SU7 – ‘faster than Tesla Model S and Porsche Taycan’, says would become one of world’s top 5 automakers

Xiaomi has finally entered the electric vehicle (EV) market. The Chinese electronics and technology behemoth known for its phones unveiled its first electric vehicle on Thursday (27th December) at the inaugural Stride launch event in Beijing. Announcing the launch of a sedan dubbed SU7, Xiaomi stated its intention to become one of the world’s top five automakers at the event.

SU in the car’s model name SU7 stands for Speed Ultra, with the company saying that it has a “super electric motor” technology capable of beating Tesla Model S and Porsche’s EV Taycan in acceleration and speed.

Lei Jun, founder and CEO of Xiaomi, said at the event, “By working hard over the next 15 to 20 years, we will become one of the world’s top 5 automakers, striving to lift China’s overall automobile industry.” He went on to say that the upcoming SU7 is “a dream car on par with Porsche and Tesla.”

According to the reports, Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. Ltd (BAIC) will manufacture the SU7 EV on behalf of Xiaomi in China. The compact electric sedan will be sold under the company’s popular cell phone brand Mi in three variants: SU7, SU7 Pro, and SU7 Max. The SU7 is available in three colour options: Aqua Blue, Mineral Grey, and Verdant Green.

Lei stated at the launch event in Beijing that Xiaomi cars’ autonomous driving capabilities would be at the leading edge of the industry. Consequently, the SU7 is outfitted with Lidar-based autonomous driving functionalities such as adaptive cruise control and self-parking. The car is powered by the HyperOS operating system from the brand.

The SU7 is integrated with Xiaomi’s smartphones and internet-connected home appliances, Lei said. He added that the vehicle will also be compatible with Apple’s iPhone, iPad, CarPlay and AirPlay. Notably, Apple is rumoured to be developing an electric car, but nothing has emerged so far yet.

In terms of dimensions, the midsize premium electric sedan has a length, width, and height of 4,997 mm, 1,963 mm, 1,440/1,455 mm, and a wheelbase of 3,000 mm, respectively. Depending on the specification, it weighs between 1,980 and 2,205kg.

In terms of powertrain, Xiaomi will offer the SU7 with two battery pack options: a 73.6kWh BYD lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery in entry-level trims with a range of 668 km, and a larger 101kWh CATL CTB (Cell to Body) battery pack with an estimated range of up to 800 km on a single charge. By comparison, Tesla’s Model S has a range of up to 650 km. At a later date, Xiaomi will also release a new V8 variant of the SU7 with a larger 150kWh battery pack.

The electric sedan will be available with a single or dual-motor powertrain. The former is powered by a rear-wheel drive motor with a peak output of 220kW (295 hp) and a top speed of 210 kmph. The top-spec trim gets a dual-motor setup with a paired output of 495kW (664 hp). This model has a top speed of 265 kmph.

The SU7, according to Xiaomi, is one of the fastest EVs on the market, with the motor spinning at up to 21,000 rpm. The price of the SU7 has yet to be announced by the company, but it is expected to do so soon.

The price of the vehicle has not been announced yet, but Lei said that it will be on a higher end. The car is expected to be available for sale in the next year. The car will be initially launched in China, and will be then available in other countries. However, it is not expected to be available in India soon.

‘Give us terrorist Hafiz Saeed’: India sends fresh demand to Pakistan, asks to hand over Mumbai blasts mastermind and LeT chief

The Ministry of External Affairs has again asked Pakistan to hand over terrorist Hafiz Saeed, who is the mastermind of the Mumbai Terrorist Attack of 2008. As per the 28th December report of Islamabad Post, the government of India has once again sent an official request to extradite the terrorist. Islamabad Post’s sources from the foreign ministry said they had received an official request to extradite Saeed as per the law.

Saeed is the mastermind of the 26/11 Mumbai Terror attacks. 166 people were killed during the attack. He is the founder of the terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba. Notably, the United States of America has also designated LeT as a terror outfit. Hafiz Saeed has a cash reward of USD one crore for his arrest. As of now, he has been lodged in prison since 2019 for funding terror activities. However, he has appeared in media reports several times that showed his arrest and sentence were only an eyewash.

He is believed to be enjoying the hospitality of the hostile neighbour’s administration while in prison. Not to forget, his political party, Pakistan Markazi Muslim League (PMML), is contesting the February 2024 General Elections in the neighbouring country. The party has fielded candidates in all constituencies. His son Talha Saeed is also contesting the upcoming elections.

Reports suggest that Saeed uses his experience with running terror outfits to lure voters. He has been promising to bring Islamic State’s entry into Pakistan if his party wins the election.

Tesla to set up its first Indian factory in Gujarat, announcement likely during Vibrant Gujarat event in January 2024

Tesla is finally coming to India. According to reports, Elon Musk’s electric car manufacturing company may announce its debut in India in January 2024 during the Vibrant Gujarat Summit scheduled to be held in Gandhinagar. The upcoming summit is the 10th edition of the annual global gathering of investors who want to take advantage of Gujarat’s pro-business policies.

Reports suggest that Elon Musk, founder and CEO of Tesla, is expected to participate in the summit. Local reports indicate the company is in the final stage of negotiations with the government for the manufacturing unit land.

Gujarat Health Minister and government spokesperson Rushikesh Patel said that the government is actively in talks with the electric car maker to finalise the deal on establishing the manufacturing plant in Gujarat.

As per Gujarat Samachar, Tesla may establish a manufacturing unit in Sanand. Tata Motors already has a manufacturing unit in Sanand. Tata Motors has also acquired the Ford’s plant in Sanand after the American car maker exited India. Maruti Suzuki, MG Motor, JCB, Honda two-wheelers and Hero MotoCorp also have manufacturing units in Gujarat.

A memorandum of understanding between the Gujarat government and Tesla may be signed during the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit. Earlier, Tesla also hinted that it is interested in establishing a battery manufacturing unit in India apart from a car manufacturing unit.

Several other states, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Tamil Nadu, have their eyes on Tesla’s investments in the country. Gujarat’s favouring environment for Tesla is not only because of the land access but also access to ports to export the cars to other countries. Apart from Sanand, Becharaji and Dholera are also under consideration, according to the media reports.

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the United States, he met Elon Musk. At that time, Tesla hinted that the company was reconsidering its investment plans in India. So far, the high import duties in India have remained a deal breaker for the company. Tesla wanted to enter the Indian market by introducing cars made in the Shanghai Gigafactory in China, but the Indian govt wanted the company should start its Indian business with locally made cars. This led to a halt on the company’s plan to enter the Indian market. However, it seems the company has now changed its position of not investing in India.

Furthermore, Union Minister Piyush Goyal also visited Tesla facilities during his recent visit to the US. Following his meeting with PM Modi, Musk spoke about his leadership role in making technology inclusive so that digital infrastructure can be created, he said, “I can say he really wants to do the right thing for India. He wants to be open, he wants to be supportive of new companies, obviously, but at the same time, make sure it accrues to India’s advantage, which is obviously that’s the job I’m saying. I am a fan of Modi,” to ANI. In response to PM Modi’s tweet regarding his meeting with business leaders in the US, Musk tweeted, “It was an honour to meet again.”
