Kannada actress Swathi Sathish ends up with swollen face after a botched root canal; pictures go viral

Kannada actress Swathi Sathish, best known for her work in films such as FIR (2022) and 6 to 6 (2018), has been suffering for the past three weeks after she underwent a root canal surgery at a private hospital in Bangalore, Karnataka. In photos of the actress that have gone viral on social media, the left side of her face appears swollen, and she looks unrecognisable.

The actress, who reportedly went through the procedure of root canal at the Oryx Dental Multispecialty Hospital in Bangalore has said that she has been suffering from severe pain since the time she underwent the surgery. While doctors assured her that the swelling on her face will go away in a few days, the actress’s condition only worsened with time.

The actor alleged that the doctor failed to provide her with adequate information and that she was recommended the wrong medications for treatment. She further accused the doctors at the hospital of administering salicylic acid instead of anaesthesia during the procedure. She then moved her treatment to a different hospital.

According to Kannada media, Sathish has accused the clinic of medical negligence and is reportedly considering legal action against the clinic.

Surgeries gone wrong: Past instances when surgeries have turned fatal for Kannada actors

Many cosmetic surgeries and diet regimes that actors have undertaken to lose weight or enhance their beauty have turned fatal in recent times, as was the case of Kannada actors Chethana Raj and Mishti Mukherjee.

Last month, actor Chethana Raj, best known for her roles in daily soaps like Geetha and Doresani, breathed her last at a private hospital in Bengaluru, where she was admitted on May 16 to undergo a ‘fat-free’ plastic surgery. She was 21 years old.

On October 2, 2020, Mishti Mukherjee who has worked in several films and music videos, died in a hospital in Bengaluru. She had died of kidney failure caused by the keto diet she was following.

Did you know India has ‘Shariah Indices’ for companies, like BSE SENSEX? How ‘Islamic investment’ is thriving though RBI disallowed Islamic banking

Earlier yesterday, a controversy broke out on the microblogging website Twitter after some users criticised the Tata Group for offering ‘Shariah-compliant’ mutual funds.

Many wondered what ’Shariah-compliant’ funds meant and why a reputed conglomerate such as the Tata Group was pandering to the Islamists.

Several social media users, many of whom had no idea how ‘Shariah-compliance’ worked in the stock markets, were caught off-guard by the discovery that Tatas offered ‘Shariah-compliant’ mutual funds. The discussion threw light on various other aspects of Islamic banking and how ‘Islamic investments’ have been steadily making their way to the Indian stock markets.

It has always been deemed unethical for Muslims to earn interest in any investment as per Shariah law. It is one of the reasons many Muslims stay away from the banking system, and for the same reason, Reserve Bank of India has suggested opening Shariah banking windows in India. However, the idea was shelved in 2017.

But, do you know India has the ‘Shariah Index’ for companies on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE)? Are you aware of the fact that there are Shariah-compliant mutual funds that are deemed ‘halal’ for Muslim investors? Let’s dive into the ‘Halal’ world of stock markets.

What is Shariah Index?

In simple terms, Shariah Index can be defined as an index of companies that are compliant with the Shariah Law. These companies are screened by an authorized board before getting listed in the indices. Such indices are present around the world, and in India, there are four main indices that index Shariah-compliant companies that are S&P BSE 500 Shariah Index, BSE Tasis Shariah 50 Index, Nifty 500 Shariah Index, and Nifty 50 Shariah Index. The boards that screen the companies for their inclusion in Shariah indices are required to be well-versed in the principles of the Quran governing personal law or Shariah.

Shariah-compliant indices have been functioning in India since late 2000s. For example, NSE’s Shariah indices were launched in 2008.

What is the process of screening?

The screening is done by an authorized board. Both NSE and BSE use Taqwaa Advisory and Shariah Investment Solutions (TASIS) for the screening process. Under the screening, the board checks if the company indulges in any business that is not allowed by Shariah.

For example, companies that indulge in the production, sale and marketing non-Halal food and beverages, Alcohol, Tobacco and other items will not get listing in Shariah Index. Hotels and Restaurants providing non-Halal products and entertainment, including gambling, will be kept away from the listing.

Apart from the business practices, the board also checks if the interest gained by investing in such stocks is within the maximum tolerance limits set by Shariah scholars, which in general is 3%. As per Nifty’s documentation on the Shariah index, “TASIS has adopted financial screening norms which are more conservative than those followed by its peers and also justified by empirical studies of the Indian environment.”

The norms include that interest-based investments should be less than 3% of the total income, and the receivables plus cash and bank balances should be less than or equal to 90% of Total Assets.

Then comes the Income Purification Ratio, which states that the investors are required to purge the pro-rata portion of interest income accrued on their holding of shares in a company.

Notably, screening of the listed stocks is done on a monthly basis, and if any company is found to have broken the ‘Shariah Code’, it gets delisted from the index.

Shariah Mutual Funds

Not only indices but there are also mutual funds available in the market that are Shariah-compliant. The top three mutual funds in this section are Tata Ethical Fund (Launched in 1996), Taurus Ethical Fund (launched in 2009) and Nippon India ETF Shariah Bees (launched in 2009).

Though these are Shariah-compliant funds, it is not compulsory for the investor to be a Muslim. These funds tout themselves as ‘ethical’ and claim that they do not harm ‘humanity’, craftily glossing over the fact that they mostly include those companies that conform to the principles ordained under ’Halal’, a religiously discriminatory practice that is prejudicial against non-Muslims.

These funds invest only in the companies that belong to something called the “Shariah-Compliant Universe”. According to an app called Islamicly, there are over 45,000 Shariah Complaint stocks across the globe. These stocks are part of the Shariah Complaint Universe, which means they follow the guidelines of the Shariah Law. Halal Stock has listed over 1,100 such stocks in India.

Why Muslims choose Shariah Complaint Mutual Funds

According to Shariah Law, they are not allowed to invest in funds that are in any way linked to any business that has been deemed ‘haram’ by Islamic canonical laws. These Mutual Funds allow them to invest in stocks while staying within the boundaries laid down by the Shariah Law.

The funds do not invest in businesses that make a profit by selling tobacco, alcohol, weapons, pork, pornography, gambling, and other military equipment. Following the concept of Riba, Shariah-Compliant MF forbids any and all types of interests. Whatever interest is earned by the investments goes to charity. These funds have a very low level of risk as high debt companies are not included.

Are Muslims investing in Shariah stocks and funds?

According to a March 2022 report of Salaam Gateway, the Muslim Financial Experts are on a mission to encourage Muslim to invest in Shariah-compliant stocks and funds. Interestingly, there are many experts who are running special courses to guide and teach Muslim investors how they can tap into the market without breaking the Shariah law.

Idafa Investments CEO Ashraf Mohamedy is one of such experts. He has an experience of almost 30 years, and his company offers Sharia-compliant wealth management services. Salaam Gateway quoted him saying that Muslims have started showing interest in the Shariah complaint share market during the lockdown.

Mohamedy said, in particular, that IT professionals and businessmen showed keen interest in such opportunities. It is notable that the number of Demat accounts has increased by 4 per cent during the lockdown. Earlier, 3% of the total population of India had Demat accounts, but now 7 per cent of Indians have Demat accounts so that they can invest in stock markets. There is no specific number available based on the religion of the investor, but it is believed that a large number of Muslim professionals opened such accounts.

OpIndia tried reaching out to Mohamedy but could not connect.

RBI had shelved the idea of Shariah banking

In 2016, the Reserve Bank of India floated the idea of opening a Shariah Complaint window in banks for Muslims also known as Islamic Banking or Shariah Banking. It was criticized heavily, and later in 2017, the idea was dropped after the centre did not show interest in it. In the same year, an RTI was filed where a copy of the letter sent by the Finance Ministry on the recommendations of the Inner Department Group regarding Shariah Banking. The Ministry rejected it under Section 8(1)(c) of the RTI Act.

Odisha: BJD MLA ‘forgets’ to arrive for his own wedding, fiancee says he is running a sex racket

Bijay Shankar Das, a Biju Janata Dal (BJD) legislator from the Tirtol constituency in Jagatsinghpur, Odisha has put himself in an embarrassing situation after he reportedly failed to turn up for his own wedding.

Infuriated by the MLA’s recklessness, his fiancee filed a police complaint against the BJD MLA for cheating and harassment. In her complaint, she also accused the BJD MLA of running a sex racket. The MLA was booked under various sections of the IPC, including 420 (cheating), 195A (threatening any person to give false evidence) and 120B (punishment of criminal conspiracy).

The State Congress and the BJP also jumped into the fray once the drama became public. The opposition parties demanded an independent investigation into the woman’s allegations.

Interestingly, merely a day after his fiancee lodged a complaint of cheating as he failed to turn up at their wedding, ruling BJD’s Tirtol MLA Bijaya Shankar Das on Sunday said that he is ready to marry her in the next 60 days. The excuse he gave for not attending his own wedding was that ‘he forgot about it’.

In what transpired, Bijay Shankar Das and his girlfriend Somalika Das had opted to marry in a civil ceremony and had set June 17 (Friday) as the day for their marriage registration. However, the MLA failed to appear at the Jagatsinghpur sub-registrar office on the scheduled day.

Despite the fact that Somalika arrived on time at the marriage registrar’s office, neither the MLA nor any of his family members did. After nearly three hours of waiting, the woman realised she had been stood up and left the office. The next day itself, Somalika filed a police complaint against the MLA. “We had applied for marriage registration at the office of the sub-registrar on May 17. He had promised me, we will have a court marriage on this day at the sub-registrar office. However, he didn’t keep his promise,” Somalika was quoted by India Today as saying.

He accused the MLA of cheating and harassment. She also alleged that the MLA’s relatives are threatening her and her family members. She further alleged that the MLA was running a sex racket to raise money for election expenses.

Somalika also alleged that Bijaya Shankar had tampered with his Matric mark sheet. Notably, the MLA’s father late Bishnu Charan Das was the Minister of School and Mass Education at that time.

The MLA refuted the allegations meted at him. He said that he is ready to marry her in the next 60 days. “As per norms, the marriage registration needs to be completed within 90 days of applying for it. We still have 60 days left for marriage registration. I haven’t received any information from anyone regarding registration of marriage today,” Das told the media.

Actress and reality shows star Mandana Karimi twerks in a burqa, draws flak from Islamists for disrespecting burqa

Iranian actress and model, Mandana Karimi, has been at the receiving end of backlash from Islamists after she uploaded a video of her dancing and twerking in a burqa. Karimi, who is based in India, has appeared in several Bollywood films like Roy, Bhaag Johnny, Kya Kool Hain Hum 3, and in reality shows like Bigg Boss and Lock Upp.

In an Instagram post on Friday (June 17), the actress was seen wearing a burqa and twerking. In her post sharing the video twerking in a Burqa, she wrote, “I wish shooting with hijab was as easy as this BTS. No hates just bunch of people making a film.”

Reportedly, Mandana Karimi was in Istanbul at that time and was shooting at a clothing shop.

Soon after, Islamists descended on her Instagram account and hurled the choicest of expletives at her.

“Shame! Do not disrespect hijab like this. At least think once before doing such actions!” wrote one Islamist. Another co-religionist inquired, “What else is left for you to do to get work?”

Mandana Karmi and her Lock Upp confession

Earlier in April, the Iranian actress drew media eyeballs after she confessed to being impregnated by a famous director. She said when she was struggling with separation and divorce from her ex, she got into a relationship with a famous director. This was the time when she could not trust men in general, but that person projected himself as someone who could be his friend.

She said, “In the outside world, he talks about women’s rights. He talks about how women have to be independent, how women have to take their power into their own hands, and he is someone who is an idol to many people, the young generation who want to become a filmmaker or even just a normal teenager.”

Karimi added that her relationship went on for a year and a half. She kept it a secret as she was not yet divorced and did not want anyone to know about it. During the lockdown, they became closer and started living together.

They became close, and it reached a point where he started saying that he loved her and wanted to be with her. She said, “He told me he wanted to move out of India with me. We should plan a family, and we did plan a pregnancy. But when it actually happened, he completely backed off.”

In a shocking incident in Nagla Bohar village of Mathura district in Uttar Pradesh, a man allegedly killed a 16 years old girl and severely injured her mother because the girl did not accept his friend request on Facebook. After committing the crime, the man tried to kill himself as well and is now hospitalised.

The accused Ravi is a resident of Muzzafarnagar, the Superintendent of Police (city) Martand Prakash Singh shared. A case has been registered against him based on the complaint by the father of the murdered girl. The victim’s father, Tejveer Singh, works as security personnel at a factory in Faridabad, Haryana. In his complaint, Tejveer alleged that Ravi killed his daughter as she did not accept his friend request on Facebook.

The minor victim opened the door, and once inside, Ravi took out a knife he had hidden in the invitation card and stabbed the girl multiple times resulting in her death.

Upon hearing the girl’s screams, her mother Sunita rushed to the room and the accused attacked her as well, stabbing her in the back and the shoulders. Seriously wounded Sunita is currently undergoing treatment in the local city hospital where her condition continues to remain critical.

Germany to restart coal power plants to conserve natural gas: Four years ago, German leaders had laughed at Donald Trump’s warning

As tensions rise between Europe and Russia over the war in Ukraine, Moscow has dramatically reduced the gas flow to the continent, forcing countries to recalibrate supplies for their energy requirements. Germany, the country with the highest GDP in Europe, has decided to restart its coal power plants to conserve its depleting reserves of natural gas.

Germany’s economy minister on Sunday announced the decision after Russia cut gas deliveries last week in the wake of European leaders’ visit to Kyiv to show solidarity and unity with Ukraine against the Russian invasion. With no end in sight to the ongoing war and energy supplies from Russia becoming fickle, Germany has decided to restart its coal power plants to fortify its energy needs.

As a retaliatory measure against sanctions imposed on Moscow by the European nations over the Ukraine war, Russia had cut off gas supplies to several countries. Then last week, Russian gas giant Gazprom reduced flows through the Nord Stream pipeline, an important undersea link that carries gas directly to Germany.

While Gazprom cited maintenance issues as the cause for the cutbacks, European leaders believe it is a political tactic by Russia’s Vladimir Putin to exact revenge for crippling sanctions imposed against Moscow.

Robert Habeck, the economy minister and Germany’s vice-chancellor, said Sunday the situation is grim and laid out steps his country plans to take to store enough gas to get through the winter. They include re-operationalising the coal power plants that were phased out to reduce the country’s carbon emissions.

“That’s bitter, but it’s simply necessary in this situation to lower gas usage,” said Mr. Habeck. “The gas storage tanks must be full by winter. That is our top priority.”

German leaders had dismissed Donald Trump’s warning bells of reliance on Russian energy imports

As Germany scrambles to shake off their dependence on Russian energy imports, the spotlight is on the German political class for failing to raise the alarm over the country’s increasing reliance on Moscow for its energy requirements.

Instead, German leaders, as early as 2018, were in denial mode over the country’s growing dependence on Russia for its gas needs, despite being warned by the then US President Donald Trump.

In July 2018, Donald Trump voiced his concerns over Germany leaning on Russian gas imports to fulfil its requirements. Speaking to the United Nations General Assembly, Trump said, “Germany will totally become dependent on Russian energy if it does not immediately change course.”

He further added, “Here in the Western Hemisphere, we are committed to maintaining our independence from the encroachment of expansionist, foreign powers.”

However, Trump’s prescient warning that Germany will become dependent on Russian energy imports at the United Nations was met with derision by the German delegation, which scoffed at Trump’s forewarning.

Several Western news organisations, including CNN, which harboured deep prejudice against Trump, dismissed his warning as an exaggeration and termed his assertions “highly inaccurate claims”. Less than four years later, the short-shrift by German leaders has come back to haunt them as the Russia-Ukraine war grinds on, ushering Germany into an imminent energy crisis.

Hitler Ki Maut Marega: Veteran Congress leader Subodh Kant Sahay uses derogatory language for PM Narendra Modi

Veteran Congress leader and Gandhi family loyalist Subodh Kant Sahay has recently courted controversy for wishing death upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a protest over the recently launched Agnipath scheme.

In a video aired by Times Now, Sahay could be heard as saying, “I think Modi has surpassed all records made by Hitler. Even that dictator had started an army recruitment scheme (like Modi’s Agnipath)”.

Modi Hitler ki raha chalega, toh Hitler ki Maut marega (If Modi treads the path of Hitler, then, he will die like him,” the Congress leader wished death upon the Indian Prime Minister.

“This is a country of Congress martyrs. Despite such a long list of people who sacrificed their lives for the nation, the party did not cross the line,” he added.

Subodh Kant Sahay claimed to have seized the microphone from Sonia Gandhi when she refused to become the Prime Minister in 2004 by claiming that the party members got elected due to her. “No Congress worker will tolerate insult of Sonia Gandhi,” he continued.

While speaking to Times Now, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla condemned the Congress for not reprimanding its leaders for making inflammatory remarks against PM Modi. He also accused Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi of encouraging party leaders to make such statements.

‘Modi will die a dog’s death’: Says Maharashtra Congress leader Sheikh Hussain

Recently, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a complaint against Congress leader Sheikh Hussain at the Gittikhadan Police Station for making derogatory comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Nagpur.

The BJP leaders had sought strict action against Hussain and also demanded his arrest within 48 hours. “Jaise Kutte ki maut hoti hai vaise Narendra Modi ki maut hogi (Modi will die a dog’s death)”, he said while demonstrating outside the ED office in Nagpur to protest against the interrogation of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi by the ED.

Several Congress leaders and workers from the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra staged a protest and criticized PM Modi and the ED for questioning Congress’s Rahul Gandhi in connection with a money-laundering probe linked to the National Herald newspaper.

The Nagpur Police in response to the aggressive protest detained state ministers Nitin Raut and Vijay Waddetiwar along with other Congress workers.

PIB fact-checks fake Ministry of Defence letter on the Agnipath scheme circulating online mentioning revised terms of service for recently enrolled cadres

Ever since the Government of India launched the Agnipath scheme for recruitment in the Indian Armed Forces, along with violent protests, a barrage of misinformation is also being spread against the scheme by nefarious elements. Only today (June 20), the official handle of the PIB India had to post a Tweet debunking a fake letter circulating on social media on the Agnipath Recruitment scheme, which was claimed to be issued by the Ministry of Defence.

Sharing a screenshot of the fake letter, PIB warned that the letter is fake. “The Ministry of Defence has not issued this letter”, read the Tweet.

According to PIB, the letter circulating with claims of being issued by the Ministry of Defence to the chiefs of the Indian Armed Forces speaks about the revised terms and tenure of service for recently enrolled jawans, airmen and sailors. The letter is dated June 17, 2022, and duly signed by one MK Ramanna who has signed the letter as the Additional Secretary to GOI.

The fake letter was shared by several social media users on Twitter, trying to create more confusion and misinformation about the Agnipath scheme.

The letter claims that the ORs attested after 1 Jan 2019 and those not promoted to a substantive rank of Naik or equivalent on 1 July 2022 are to be kept under the Agnipath Scheme. While dismissing the latter’s specific claim, PIB deemed the entire letter to be a fabrication.

Notably, OpIndia also did not find any MK Ramanna’s name in the list of officials working for the Indian Defence Ministry.

Centre bans 35 WhatsApp groups for spreading misinformation on Agnipath scheme, arrests 10 for spreading fake news

Earlier, on June 19, the centre banned 35 WhatsApp groups for spreading misinformation about the Agnipath scheme. The govt is tracking people spreading misinformation about the scheme, and taking action against such people.

Reportedly, the WhatsApp groups were found spreading wrong information about the Agnipath recruitment scheme and were fuelling violence against it. The union home ministry informed that other than banning the messaging groups, at least 10 persons also have been arrested for spreading fake news about the armed forces recruitment scheme.

The central govt has also appealed to the people to report any people or group spreading such fake news about the Agnipath scheme. People can inform the PIB fact check team about such spreading of misinformation through WhatsApp on the number 8799711259.

Notably, the Indian Army on Sunday released terms and conditions and related details for prospective applicants wanting to join the force under the Agnipath military recruitment scheme. OpIndia had also written a detailed report on the FAQs based on the information provided by the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces which would help individuals in understanding the scheme better.
