“Attack on free press WILL BE OPPOSED”: Home Minister Amit Shah tweets after Arnab Goswami is assaulted and arrested by Mumbai Police

Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday condemned the assault and subsequent arrest of Arnab Goswami by Mumbai Police in a 2018 abetment to suicide case which has been closed by court.

Taking to Twitter, Amit Shah said that this action by Mumbai Police reminds us of the Emergency era that was imposed by Indira Gandhi. “Congress and its allies have shamed democracy once again,” he tweeted. He said that this action by Mumbai Police is misuse of state power agains Republic TV and Arnab Goswami and it is an attack on individual freedom. “This attack on free press must and WILL BE OPPOSED,” he said.

Earlier today, as reported by Republic TV, Mumbai Police team led by encounter specialist Sachin Vaze carrying assault rifles like AK 47 entered Arnab Goswami’s house and assaulted him. Arnab Goswami’s minor son, his parents-in law were also subjected to assault. He was subsequently put in a pole van and arrested.

2018 abetment to suicide case

In May 2018, an FIR was filed against Arnab Goswami in an alleged abetment to suicide case. An interior designer had committed suicide in his bungalow in Alibaug. In a suicide note, Anvay Naik claimed Goswami and the other two persons—Feroz Shaikh and Niteish Sarda—owed him a total of Rs 5.4 crore. However, Goswami was investigated and case was closed by court after a closure report was filed by the Police. You could read about the case in detail here.

Mumbai Police marks 1.5 lakh Twitter accounts for posting ‘defamatory content’ against state govt, initiates legal action

On 3rd November, the Mumbai Police released a press note stating they have marked over 1.5 Twitter accounts for posting defamatory content against the Government of Maharashtra, Mumbai Police, Commissioner of Police, and others. The majority of these accounts were allegedly created or surfaced recently after the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

In October, Mumbai Police had stated that over 80,000 social media accounts were created for ‘defaming’ Police Commissioner and police force in Sushant Singh Rajput case. As per the latest press note, the team of cyber experts with Mumbai Police has marked approximately 1.5 lakh Twitter accounts during the technical investigation. As many as 80 percent of them were reported as suspicious. They made ‘negative tweets’, retweets, and comments against Shiv Sena-led Maharashtra Government and Mumbai Police. “Their activities surprisingly showcased the drastic leap in the number of Tweets per day, number of followers, following, which is quite difficult for an individual who is a genuine user of Twitter or any social media platform to express his own opinion for certain social topics,” the report further added.

Understanding ‘Bots’ or fake accounts on social media platforms

Bots are fake accounts that are used to push trends on social media platforms. Such accounts are controlled by software using Twitter API. As these accounts can be automated to generate tweets, retweets, likes, shares, and even replies in DMs, many digital marketing companies use such fake accounts to promote their clients. There are services available where one can buy likes, retweets, views, etc. at a very low price. This technology is often deemed as illegal by the social media platforms as it uses unfair means of promoting a trend on social media platforms. Such fake accounts or Bots periodically removed from the social media platforms to safeguard the interest of the users. It was reported in June that Twitter had deleted 1.7 fake accounts that were promoting Chinese narrative. In August, rapped Badshah had reportedly confessed of using such services for promoting his account on social media platforms.

The majority of accounts are Bots

As per the press release, during a more in-depth investigation into these accounts, Mumbai Police found that many of the marked Twitter accounts were Bots and fake accounts operated with the help of Bots. Most of the accounts were being operated from different countries, but some of such Bots have Indian IP addresses. They alleged that these Bots were used to ‘spread defamatory contents against the Government of Maharashtra and Mumbai Police’.

In the report, Mumbai Police noted that there were several fake accounts in the names of known celebrities such as Raveena Tondon and several others. These accounts were used to “execute the defamation over social media platform Twitter. During the investigation, Mumbai police found this fake account is a BOT,” the report further added.

Hashtags and important mentions By Bots

Cyber experts prepared a list of hashtags and important mentions that were used to “defame Mumbai Police”.

“Primarily, we were suspecting the involvement of such kind of technology (BOT) must be getting used to operating anonymously, but now it’s quite evident after the confirmation from Cyber Expert, that BOTS are getting used by culprits/sponsored personalities to execute the fake account activity and it’s a major breakthrough,” the report said.

Accounts are disappearing, says Mumbai Police

Mumbai Police suggested in the report that many accounts that were involved in the defamation are disappearing from the social media platform. Some accounts are deleting the defamatory content to ‘evade investigation process’. Many of these accounts are being operated from outside India from countries like China, Panama, Hong Kong, Nepal, and others. They are using Proxy Server to hide their identity. The experts have found few accounts that were operated within India. They were also using Proxy Servers.

“For further investigation, the details of all the accounts which are suspicious in nature as Bot, will be handover to Twitter to confirm the details and eliminate them with immediate effects while maintaining the Evidence for further course of action,” the report further added. Mumbai Cyber Cell is investigating the case further with the help of Cyber Experts.

Winner between Donald Trump and Joe Biden in the US Presidential elections may not be known on election night: Here’s why

The winner of the US Presidential Elections 2020 may not be known on Wednesday as officials in the key states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan have said they will not be declaring the winner on election night. Donald Trump is leading all three states at the time this report was written and these three states are crucial towards his victory.

Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania are reportedly counting in-person votes first and absentee votes would be counted later. As a consequence of which, results are unlikely to be declared on election night. The three states have 16, 10 and 20 electoral college votes respectively and 46 collectively which are essential for Donald Trump to cross the 270 mark required for a victory.

Joe Biden also does not appear to have a clear path towards victory as he has lost Florida and trails in the key states of Ohio, Georgia and North Carolina at the time of writing this report. Donald Trump is poised to win Texas as well while his opponent has taken the Blue States along expected lines. Under such circumstances, the winner of the US Presidential Elections 2020 will hinge on the results in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

The uncertainty could prove to be a recipe for chaos as analysts have predicted long-draw out court battles to resolve the results. Republicans and Democrats have also accused each other of attempting to rig the elections. In such a polarized climate, it could give way to violence and anarchy with the USA witnessing widespread rioting in the days leading up to election night.

“In a black day of India’s democracy, the Editor-in-Chief of the number 1 news network of India was dragged by his hair and arrested. Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh’s cops shut off cameras, and thrashed Arnab. They stopped Arnab from handing medicines to his parents-in-law, and even physically assaulted his son. They refused permission for a written legal note be put on record,” the Republic TV said in a statement.

Reportedly, encounter cop Sachin Vaze threatened Arnab saying, “You don’t know what I am capable of”. In its statement, the Republic TV said that the Mumbai Police in brazen disregard for all due process, integrity and any semblance of fair investigation, dragged Arnab Goswami by the collar to a crime branch unit police and physically attacked him inside his him.

The statement further read, “It is terrifying that the Mumbai Police and the state of Maharashtra are unapologetic and unhinged in misusing their office and uniform to undertake a physical attack, and open criminal intimidation even before the cameras against a citizen of India. Moreover the attack on the Fourth Estate without evidence or verifiable facts, on the basis of a closed case being reopened with the sole aim to make an unwarranted arrest of Arnab Goswami is shocking and one that all of  India stands against.”

Ex-serviceman’s son arrested for trying to hoist the tricolour in PDP office

A man named Amandeep Singh was arrested in Jammu today for attempting to hoist the national flag on the headquarters of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) during a protest against PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti who denounced the national flag days after being released from detention.

Last month, Singh had hoisted the national flag on the boundary wall near the main entrance of the PDP office. Singh and some other youths were stopped by police the next day when they attempted to hoist the Indian flag on the party’s headquarters.

Confirming Singh’s detention Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu, Sridhar Patil said that Singh had been detained under some other case and not for disturbing law and order. The details of charges against Singh were not disclosed by police. Singh claimed that he was being arrested by police under PDP’s pressure. A team of police led by SHO Gandhinagar had raided Singh’s house and taken him along.

Singh’s father all who went to Gandhinagar police station after his son’s arrest alleged that he was not allowed to meet his son. “They are not allowing me to meet my son. I have the right to know under which case they have booked my son. This is the worst state of rule in which patriots and nationalists unfurling the tricolour are being sent to jail”, said Singh’s father. Questioning Singh’s arrest his wife asked, “Is this a lesson for being a nationalist and hoisting the national flag”.

Mehbooba Mufti’s refusal to hoist the national flag

PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti had refused to honour the tricolour days after being released from detention. She said that she would not raise the national flag until the flag of Jammu and Kashmir is restored. Interacting with media Mufti had said “My flag is this” pointing at the flag of Jammu and Kashmir kept on a table in front of her. “Our relationship with India’s flag is linked to our relationship with Jammu and Kashmir’s flag. It’s not an independent relationship. The national flag is here only because of this (the Jammu and Kashmir) flag and constitution”, she said.

Following Mufti’s remarks, BJP workers had hoisted the national flag in front of the PDP office and chanted slogans of “Bharat Mata ki jai”. Three senior PDP leaders, namely Trilok Singh Bajwa, Ved Mahajan and Wafa reportedly resigned in protest against Mufti’s statements against the Indian flag and the Indian Union.

“Pig head in mosque in France?” Controversial Turkey Muslim group cries ‘Islamophobia’ over unconfirmed reports in Turkish media

Turkish media on Monday claimed that a pig’s head was left in Grand Mosque in the city of Compiegne in Oise. These claims were made by Turkish Muslim umbrella group DITIB (Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious Affairs). This report comes after Turkey accused France of ‘Islamophobia’ after France condemned the beheading of its citizens by hands of Islamic terrorists over ‘blasphemy’. Interestingly, the reports of pig head found in mosque are only claimed by DITIB. French media or authorities have not yet confirmed the incident.

What is DITIB

DITIB is a controversial Turkish Muslim group founded in Germany. It manages over 900 mosques in Germany and has over 8 lakh members. As per official research service for the German Bundestag, that has created a register of Islamic organizations in Germany, its charter states that DITIB is “linked to the Turkish government’s Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet).”

As per the report, the Diyanet sends imams to mosques affiliated with DITIB. The salaries of the Imams are paid by Turkish consulate generals. Diyanet determines what is the theological guidelines on what is preached in the mosques under DITIB. The Diyanet is state body for administration of religious affairs and answers directly to Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The Diyanet reportedly has an annual budget of over €1 billion ($1.17 billion), which is more than Turkey’s Interior or Foreign Ministry.

In March this year, the German federal state of Hesse ended its cooperation with DITIB because they had doubts of DITIB’s independence from Turkish state. In May 2019, former German intelligence chief had alleged that the DITIB Imams are working for the Turkish intelligence. In January 2019, German media reported that the organisation had close contacts with alleged Islamists of Muslim Brotherhood in Germany.

France vs Turkey

Days after French President made the ‘Islam is in crisis’ speech calling out Islamic terrorism, Turkey President Erdogan had said that Macron needs ‘treatment’. Days later, a French teacher Samuel Paty was beheaded for showing a Charlie Hebdo caricature of Prophet Muhammad to his class. This was followed by other beheadings by terrorists shouting Allahu Akbar as France continued to call out Islamic terror attack.

Amid such terror attacks, Turkish media has cited Turkish Muslim group accused of espionage, on reports of ‘pig’s head found in mosque’ in France.

US Elections: Dancing to Despacito not enough learns Joe Biden as Hispanics propel ‘racist’ Donald Trump to victory in Florida

0

US President Donald Trump has won the key swing state of Florida dealing a thumping blow to Democratic Presidential candidate Joe Biden. While the race has not officially been called yet by most news networks, Donald Trump has a huge lead in the state that is nearly impossible to be overcome. Florida Governor slammed the news networks for not calling the state for the Republican nominee, citing it as an instance of media bias.

White House Press Secretary also said that Florida should have been called long ago. Donald Trump leads by 3.3% of the votes with 91% of the votes having been counted.

Trump’s victory in Florida is being credited to the significant Hispanic community in the state that showed up in large numbers at the polls. It is believed that Democrat support for the Black Lives Matter rioting did not go down well with the Hispanic community and also, the overt popularity of Communist tyrants such as Che Guevera did not sink well with the Cuban community.

Marc Caputo, a journalist who covers Florida for Politico, shared screenshots of a conversation with a top Miami Democrat who told him that the party believes that Joe Biden was blown away by the Hispanic voter surge. “Defund the police killed us,” the Democrat said.

Overall, it is evident that the much demonised ‘White Supremacist’ Donald Trump won Florida due to non-white voters who refused to believe the media propaganda that the US President is a racist.

While Donald Trump had a sound strategy to win the Hispanic vote in Florida, Joe Biden resorted to meaningless stunts such as dancing to the tune of the popular Spanish song ‘Despacito’ at a public event. In the end, it is not surprising that the Democrat nominee failed to win their voters as rioters rampaged through the streets destroying private and public property.

Arnab Goswami arrested: Mumbai Police physically manhandle Republic TV chief at his residence, drags him to police station

Republic TV chief Arnab Goswami has been arrested by Mumbai Police early morning on Wednesday, reports Republic TV. The witch-hunt against Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami by the Mumbai Police continued on Wednesday after a few Mumbai Police officers reached the Goswami’s residence and physically manhandled him.

As per reports, Arnab is arrested in a 2018 abetment to suicide case that was already closed.

The Times of India had then reported Arnab Goswami had allegedly not paid Rs 83 lakh for a design project of a studio. However, Goswami was investigated and case was closed by court after a closure report was filed by the Police. You could read about the case in detail here.

On Wednesday, a team of Mumbai Police reached the residence of Republic TV chief Arnab Goswami and physically dragged him. He was reportedly physically assaulted and grabbed by the hair.

After assaulting him, the Mumbai Police detained Arnab Goswami and reportedly dragged him to the Raigad police station for questioning him.

In a shocking act, Arnab Goswami was physically manhandled by Mumbai Police team inside his residence.

A large contingent of Mumbai Police was seen present at Goswami’s residence on Wednesday morning. In the below video, it can be seen how officials of the Mumbai Police were manhandling the Republic TV chief.

Reportedly, the Mumbai Police has not produced any documents, summons or court papers as they reached Arnab Goswami’s residence as they tried to arrest him. The Mumbai Police team also blocked Republic Media Network’s reporters from entering Arnab’s residence and have sealed all entry and exit points.

The raid against Arnab Goswami’s residence incidentally comes just a day after the Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh had called Arnab ‘the biggest hawala’ operator in the city of Mumbai.

Continued attack against Arnab Goswami’s Republic TV by Mumbai Police

Earlier, amidst the continued attacks carried out by the Mumbai police against the news network on the behest of the Maharashtra government, Mumbai Police chief Singh had accused the channel of being the biggest hawala operator in the city of Mumbai.s

However, Arnab Goswami had hit back at the Mumbai Police Commissioner for calling him the biggest Hawala operator in Mumbai. Highlighting how the Mumbai Police failed to prove charges against him, Arnab Goswami had said that Mumbai Police were desperate to find dirt on the news channel.

“According to the Mumbai Police, I carried out hawala operations in 2017 for my Hindi channel Republic Bharat. Firstly, Republic Bharat did not exist in 2017. It was launched in 2019. Secondly, this charge proves that despite having all my accounts and ledgers, the Mumbai Police has been unable to prove a single rupee paid by Republic Media Network for TRP manipulation,” he had emphasised.

Mumbai Police demands access to Republic TV

Just a few days back, in a brazen abuse of power, the Mumbai Police-led by Param Bir Singh had intensified its attack on Republic and its journalists, after they had demanded editorial access of the news channel. The Mumbai police seemingly had sought details of all the journalists working in the newsroom.

The Mumbai Police had sent a notice asking details of Republic TV reporters, including addresses of the technicians of Republic TV, IDs and passwords of newsroom software, roster details of its journalists, and had given a time period of two days to furnish this, in a shameful trespass of free speech.

Donald Trump Jr. slammed for posting image with distorted map of India, ex-senior Pakistan diplomat to India calls it ‘very encouraging’

Donald Trump Junior, son of US President Donald Trump, posted the image of a world map on social media where Jammu & Kashmir and the North-Eastern part of India were shown as separate from the rest of the country. Donald Trump Jr. had shared the image in humour where parts of the world were painted in Red or Blue to reflect the Republican and Democrat parties respectively.

The tweet by Donald Trump Junior

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor was quick to pounce on the tweet by Donald trump Junior, blaming Prime Minister Modi for the stupidity of the son of the US President. Tharoor also appears to believe that diplomacy between two countries are conducted over Twitter on the basis of tweets posted by the son of the sitting US President.

Others were also compelled to assert that Kashmir is an integral part of India.

Others suggested another explanation which appears extremely plausible. Ilan Goldenberg, Middle East Security Director at the CNAS, said that Donald Trump Junior had likely gotten confused between Iran and India. It appears plausible as the other countries marked voting Democrat on the map are China and Mexico.

Former Pakistan High Commissioner to India, Abdul Basit, meanwhile, called the development ‘very encouraging’.

Others in India also pointed out that the son of the US President needs lessons in Geography, which he clearly does.

Donald Trump and Twitter controversies is a love story better than Twilight. And his son is no stranger to creating a storm by posting controversial images on his Twitter account. However, unlike what Abdul Basit believes, Pakistan would do well to not get too excited by this new development.

Vienna attack: Islamic terrorist was released early on terror charges in 2019, had defended himself saying he had gotten into a ‘wrong mosque’

0

Austrian capital Vienna on Monday was jolted with indiscriminate firing by gunmen at six different locations. At least 4 civilians and one attacker had been killed while the police forces have launched a wide dragnet to catch other assailants. The initial suspicions about the attack being motivated by Jihad were confirmed as the details of the slain assailants came to the fore. The Vienna gunman, who was neutralised by police forces, had a history of being associated with Jihad.

Gunman neutralised in the Vienna attack had wanted to join ISIS in Syria

Twenty-year-old Kujtim Fejzulai, who killed 4 people and wounded 17 other in Monday’s attack, was earlier arrested in April 2019 because he wanted to join ISIS in Syria. He was booked under terror charges and sentenced to 22 months in prison. However, in December 2020, he was granted an early release under the country’s juvenile law. At that time he was deemed incapable of an attack.

Born and raised in Vienna, Fejzulai was one among the 90 Austrian Islamic radicals under the radar of the intelligence agencies because they had wanted to travel to Syria. He had made all the way to an ISIS safe house along the Turkish border with Syria last year before being stopped by the local police. He was detained for four months in Turkey and was subsequently extradited back to Austria.

During his trial in April 2019, the killer defended himself in the court saying that he had “gotten into a wrong mosque” to allege he has been wrongly radicalised in carrying out jihadist terrorism. The judge deemed him incapable of carrying out an attack and therefore ordered his early release.

Shots fired at six locations

As per Vienna Police, at around 8 PM local time, several shots were fired at a busy street in the city centre. The attack happened at six locations. Some videos were circulated on the social media platforms showing gunmen walking through the streets, but their authenticity could not be verified. One of the attacks took place at a location precariously close to the Jewish synagogue.

Fejzulai was armed with an automatic rifle, pistol and machete while he launched an attack in Vienna. He was neutralised at around 8 pm after marauding the streets donning fake explosives belt. Two men and two women were killed in the attack.

However, police are not yet sure if there were more assailants involved in the attack. More than 1,000 security personnel are on the lookout for other gunmen after gunshots were heard at six different places in the city centre on Monday night.

Austria’s Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said the attackers were well equipped with automatic weapons. He said, “We are victims of a despicable terror attack in the federal capital that is still ongoing. One of the perpetrators was neutralized, but several perpetrators appear to still be on the loose.”
