Union Minister Ravi Shakar Prasad summoned by Kerala court in a defamation case filed by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor

0

The Chief Judicial Magistrate of Thiruvananathapuram has summoned the Union Law Minister Ravi Shakar Prasad on a defamation plea filed by senior Congress leader and MP from Thiruvananthapuram Shashi Tharoor. Ravi Shakar Prasad has been asked to appear before the court on May 2.

Earlier, Shashi Tharoor had sent a notice to Ravi Shakar Prasad seeking an unconditional apology which Prasad had rejected asking Tharoor to apologize for calling Prime Minister “a scorpion sitting on shiv linga”. Later Shashi Tharoor had slapped a defamation notice on RS Prasad for calling him a ‘murder accused’ referring to the Sunanda Pushkar murder case.

In a Press conference in October 2018, Ravi Shankar Prasad had made a statement during a press conference saying, “Shashi Tharoor who is accused of murder has no right to comment against Prime Minister.”

Tharoor said on Friday, “There is no murder. Delhi police have filed an FIR which is for suicide and not for murder. That FIR is being heard by a court and no court has framed charges yet. The cheapening of discourse in our politics in the last few years is truly unacceptable.”

Shashi Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar was found dead on 17 January 2014 in a luxury hotel in New Delhi. Former Union minister Shashi Tharoor has been charged under Sections 498-A (husband or his relative subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC but has evaded arrested in the case so far.

Forcing teachers to attend oath-taking ceremony of Arvind Kejriwal sets a wrong precedent: BJP leader Kapil Mishra

On Saturday, ex-AAP MLA and BJP politician, Kapil Mishra hit out at AAP convenor, Arvind Kejriwal, on Twitter for “forcing teachers” to attend his swearing-in-ceremony at Ramlila Maidan on Sunday.

His tweet read, “It is a great thing that teachers are coming to attend the oath-taking ceremony of the Government. But, coercing teachers to attend the event through a government order and keeping the track of their attendance at Ramlila Maidan sets a wrong precedent. The auspicious occasion must not be eclipsed by such unnecessary things.”

Mishra’s tweet comes at the backdrop of a circular issued by Delhi’s Directorate of Education to teachers and principals on Friday to attend the swearing-in-ceremony of Arvind Kejriwal.

In a press conference on Saturday, Manish Sisodia, AAP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, said that those teachers, students, Mohalla clinic doctors, etc. who benefited from the AAP’s schemes were invited to the oath-taking ceremony. He defended the decision by attributing the AAP’s victory in the recent polls, to the people of Delhi.

Kapil Mishra has been at loggerheads with Arvind Kejriwal ever since he left the Aam Aadmi Party. Last year, Mishra took the Delhi CM off guard by asking, “If Mohalla clinics are that great, why do Kejriwal and his ministers spend lakhs in private hospitals?” The ex-AAP MLA was also issued a notice by the Election Commission ahead of Delhi polls for comparing the elections as a contest between India and Pakistan.

Saffron Swords by Manoshi Rawal: Attempt to bring to light the brave saga of resistance by Indic warriors to foreign invasions

I knew the author Manoshi briefly, in a professional capacity, many years ago. I remembered her as she was my kind of feminist: author (many times over) at a young age, adventurous and intrepid female biker who traversed the length and breadth of the country ‘alone’ and yet so soft-spoken and pleasant. So when Saffron Swords came out, I was intrigued and got myself a copy immediately.

The book is an attempt to bring to light the brave saga of resistance put forward by Indic warriors to foreign invasions. While hundreds of thousands of people have given their lives fighting against the barbarism that was inflicted upon this land—young men and women, the not so young as well as the aged and even the children, this book recount the tales of valour of fifty brave men and women. To my surprise, I had earlier read the exploits of only five of these warriors: Rani Lakshmi Bai, Veer Savarkar, Rana Sanga, Bhagat Singh and Chandrashekhar Azad. The fact that all the other names were alien to my friends and me, is a telling indictment of the way we have been taught history. One cannot help but suspect if there was a larger deep-rooted conspiracy at play that we were taught about only our oppressors and colonisers. We were denied the complete truth and with it, we were denied our history.

Have you heard of a fiery 17-year-old young girl called Kanaklata Barua? She was shot dead by the British, though she was unarmed, simply for hoisting the Indian national flag. Before dying, she told the Brits you can only kill our body, not our spirit. How many of us have heard of Bajiprabhu Deshpande who led an army of 300 against 12,000 of Adilshah’s men? All 300 attained veergati, but the small yet ferocious army managed to hold off Adilshah’s 12,000 men for fifteen straight hours! This gave Shivaji Maharaj enough time to pass and recapture the fort. Baji Prabhu had fought gallantly till the end, with a sword in each hand, even though he was injured.

The hostile circumstances of those times forced even the peaceful agrarian folk into combat. Farmer turned warrior, Rampyari Gurjar led an army of 40,000 women. She joined hands with the Mahapanchayat army when they learnt of the infamous Taimur’s impending attack. The Mahapanchayat would fight Taimur at day and Rampyari’s army would take over at night. It was absolute hell for Taimur, who was severely injured and retreated. He had come to India with a lakh and a half strong army. He was eventually left with only a few thousand and died a few years later. Was anyone from our Indic lands capable of facing up to the barbaric Mohammad Ghori? Yes, it was brave Rani Naiki Devi. She fought Ghori with her young son tied to her back. And yes, she won. Why don’t we know any of this or any of the other goosebump-inducing, epic tales of bravery of any of our ancestors?

Looking at the many countries around, it is impossible to not observe how so many of them are defeated cultures. The fact that India is not one of them is undoubtedly due to the sacrifices made by the selfless, brave, Indic warriors. While the book left me feeling exceptionally proud, it also left me heartbroken and forced to introspect. It is well nigh impossible to turn a page unmoved when one has just read about villages after villages being pillaged and ravaged and not a soul left to offer a chaadar or to perform antim sanskaar for the hutatmas?

Saffron Swords is a commendable effort by an individual who came across all this information painstakingly in her own travels and research. But with each chapter I found myself asking so many questions of my own. Will I learn more if I visit the village today and grill the residents? What happened to the few freedom fighters who survived the wars? Did they have someone to hold their hand in their last few days? What about their descendants?

On my visit to Punjab many years ago, a small book that I had purchased from the railway station, on Guru Gobind Singh and the Char Sahibzade, mentioned in detail even Baba Moti Ram Mehra (the brave angel who was killed for feeding the Guru’s sons milk for three nights) and had mention of his family lineage lasting for numerous generations and even naming the current one and where they live today. I longed to know a similar detailed history of all the brave warriors mentioned in this book. I needed to know that their legacy has carried on… in some way.

The numerous accounts of valour, disclosed in the book, is evidence enough that the Indic natives who faced brutality and cruelty of the worst kind known to man, were courageous people. The book definitively busts the falsehood foisted on us that we were a weakly and cowardly people, a people deserving of nothing better than oppression and foreign rule. This falsehood keeps getting propagated, to ensure that we Indians do not seek pride in our history or culture. For who would try to save a culture and history one is ashamed of?

Fortunately, Mother India has numerous sons and daughters who don’t just love her but are also wise and learned enough to sift fact from fiction and truth from propaganda and work indefatigably to restore its glory. They dig up historic details that have been meticulously concealed from us. The book Saffron Swords by Manoshi Sinha Rawal is one such example, a product born of deep love for the country. And the great news is that this book is just part one of a series in the making. We cannot wait for the next book, to know and learn more about and to celebrate the hitherto forgotten heroes of our land.

As one reads chapter after chapter it becomes evident, that the inhabitants of this land knew and recognised the enemy, they weren’t taken by surprise and that they fought. From the beginning till the end. Yes, our brave ancestors fought. Many of them faced guns and gun powder with sickles and swords; with only the unfailing blazing orange flames of desh bhakti burning in their hearts, keeping their resolves strong… and hence the name Saffron Swords.

We grew up in ignorance listening to messages like, ‘de di haemin azadi bina khadak, bina dhaal’ if that was truly the case then why were hundreds of patriots hung, tortured, killed and maimed for fighting for their freedom, our freedom? Another rhyme then comes to mind, that rightly asks, jaaney kitne jhooley phasi par, kitno ne goli khayi thi, kyu jhooth bolte ho sahib, ki charkhe se aazadi aayi thi.’

The recent developments in the country are encouraging. Abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35 A, repeal of special status to J&K and granting of Union Territory status to J&K and to Ladakh (which has been finally separated and made a Union territory) has been a more than welcome development. It gives us hope that with a powerful and dedicated Centre, there is scope for a nation to undo and correct its historic blunders.

It gives us hope that our glorious suppressed history will, in due course, be officially made known to all—for us to read, know, disseminate and seek inspiration from.

Anti-CAA protests: Muslim mobs hit streets across Tamil Nadu after police lathi-charge protestors for pelting stones, injure four policemen

0

An anti-CAA protest by Muslims turned violent on Friday in Chennai when a group of protesters clashed and pelted stones at police, leaving four personnel injured.

Reportedly, the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act turned violent at Washermanpet in Chennai. During the violence, four police personnel including a woman joint commissioner, two women constables and a sub-inspector were injured in stone-pelting.

Joint Commissioner P Vijayakumari sustained injuries on her head, the police said, adding that those wounded were admitted to a hospital.

Earlier, some agitators were reportedly removed from the protest site forcibly, leading to a commotion between them and the police. The protesters accused the police of resorting to a lathi charge.

Reportedly, some of the protesters were detained. Subsequently, more people gathered there demanding their release. As a result, security was beefed up in the area.

Hours after the Chennai police resorted to lathi-charging the violent protestors at Washermenpet in Chennai, hundreds of members of Islamic outfits took to the streets and blocked roads at many places in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Friday night.

Large numbers of people occupied key junctions in Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Salem, Tiruchi, Vaniyambadi, Tirupathur, Krishnagiri, Villupuram and many other places in the State condemning the “police assault”.

Later the detained protesters were released after a meeting between police authorities leaders of the Muslim organisations. Subsequently, they called off the agitation. “An amicable decision was arrived at in the meeting with Muslim organisations and they have announced that the agitation will be withdrawn,” a police officer said, adding that normalcy had returned to the area.

In the aftermath of the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), several incidents of riots, violence, arson and vandalism by Muslim mobs in the name of ‘protests’ against the enactment of the law have taken place across the country.

The Muslim mobs have descended into the streets with the active support of the opposition parties and a certain section of ‘liberal-secular’ media and unleashed violence under the garb of ‘protesting’ against the Citizenship Amendment Act, which has no bearing on the existing citizens of the country.

Don’t interfere in India’s internal affairs: MEA issues strong statement calling out Turkey for bringing up the Kashmir ‘issue’

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has slammed the President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan if Turkey on Saturday for raising the Kashmir issue yet again. India warned Erdogan to not “interfere in India’s internal affairs” after the Turkish President compared the so-called “struggle” of the Kashmiris to that of the fight of the Turks against foreign occupation during the First World War.

In a joint press conference with the Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, Erdogan drew parallels between the “struggle of Kashmiri people” and the battle of Gallipoli which was fought in Turkey between the Allied Powers and the Ottoman Empire. The Turkish President said that there is no difference between Gallipoli and Kashmir. The comments were made during Erdogan’s 4th visit to Pakistan.

The spokesperson of the MEA, Raveesh Kumar, stated, “India rejects all references to Jammu and Kashmir, which is an integral and inalienable part of India” He reiterated that the said region is an integral part of India.

Kumar added, “We call upon the Turkish leadership not to interfere in India’s internal affairs and develop a proper understanding of the facts, including the grave threat posed by terrorism emanating from Pakistan to India and the region.”

This is not the first time that Turkey had raised the Kashmir issue, despite repeated disapproval by New Delhi. In 2019, during an address at the United Nations post the abrogation of Article 370, Erdogan was seen supporting the stance of Pakistan on Kashmir.

Abhinav Agarwal’s Predators and Prey won’t let you sleep for a night or two at least

“Predators and prey” by Abhinav Agarwal is a fast-paced, nail-biting thriller that keeps you glued to the end. This novel is a veritable treat for many reasons. The main storyline emanates from a data theft at the NSA and provides a gripping, minute by minute account of the exciting events that follow within a short period of time. In the process, the alert reader learns a lot about what access to individual data means in our times.

We also get to see the battle for supremacy at the highest and deepest levels of power. A well-informed reader will recognize shades of real-life political influencers among the characters. For example, how can a story about espionage and security not have a fictional analogue of Ajit Doval? They will also form interesting perspectives about some events that have shaped our current geopolitical landscape.

Read: ‘Predators and Prey’. Mounted on a big canvas, Abhinav Agarwal’s book is a fast-paced thriller ready for a movie script

The pace of the writing is relentless; it is impossible to relax at any moment of the story. The detailed visual descriptions make you feel as if you are travelling with the protagonist(s). Just as you start to feel that they have seen the worst, a new development makes you sit up with a start.

All in all, every minute spent reading this book is worth it. For enhanced enjoyment, one should either read it on a flight (and therefore, without distractions from the internet) or late at night when everyone else is asleep.

The only downside is that at least for a couple of days after reading this book, the sensitive reader will be scared. Very scared.

Moradabad: Congress leader Imran Pratapgarhi fined Rs 1 crore for violating Section 144 during anti-CAA protests

0

The Moradabad District Administration has sent a notice of fine of Rs 1 crore 4 lakh and 8 thousand to the poet and Congress leader Imran Pratapgarhi for being involved in demonstrations against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and violating Section 144. In the notice sent, the administration has accounted for a daily expenditure of Rs 13 lakh 42 thousand in the protest against the CAA which has been continuing at Moradabad Idgah since January 29.

As per the reports, the demonstration in Moradabad is regarded as a threat to the social harmony of the town, prompting the district administration to spend a fortune on maintaining law and order and preventing any untoward incident. Slapping the notice against Congress leader, the administration has accused Pratapgarhi of inciting people to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

In a recent gathering at Idgah, Pratapgarhi said, ”In the last few days, we have seen pictures and videos which brings to our mind the question of where our country is heading towards. Our daughters and sisters are persistently being tortured by the police. I will continue to participate in all such movements even further. This government cannot suppress our voice. The administration sent me a notice. I will see how to respond back. I will approach the High Court and if needed to the Supreme Court as well.”

It is pertinent to note that the Uttar Pradesh government had come down hard against the anti-CAA rioters who indulged in arson, vandalism and committed violence on the pretext of opposing the Citizenship Law. More than 150 notices were issued by Lucknow administration after Yogi Adityanath declared that those who indulge in violence will be made to pay for it or their properties will be seized for compensating the loss to the public exchequer. The Uttar Pradesh government had identified at least 498 properties to seize, which belonged to rioters who vandalised public properties in the state during the anti-CAA protest. Notices have been already sent to these protesters regarding the same.

Infighting in MP Congress escalates, Kamal Nath disdainfully says ‘utar jaye’ when asked about Scindia’s threat to agitate if promised not met

The internecine conflict in Congress seems to have taken a grave turn as Senior Congress leader and Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath dared his party member Jyotiraditya Scindia to hit the streets for agitation against non-fulfilment of the Congress party’s farm loan waiver promise.

In a cavalier disregard of the threat given by Jyotiraditya Scindia, Kamal Nath said “Toh Utar Jaye” when asked his reaction over the warning given by Scindia of launching ana agitation if the poll promise of complete farm loan waiver is not fulfilled by the Madhya Pradesh government.

Firing another warning shot at Kamal Nath, Jyotiraditya Scindia had yesterday threatened that he will hit the streets if each one of the promises made in the Congress manifesto is not fulfilled by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath. He also added that the Congress manifesto is sacrosanct for him and if it is not fulfilled, people would not be alone in their fight against the state government.

Read: Widening rift in Madhya Pradesh congress as Scindia and CM Kamal Nath exchange barbs: Here is what happened

This is not the first time that Madhya Pradesh Congress’ fratricidal discord has come out in open. Earlier too, Scindia had overtly expressed his concerns over the implementation of promises made in Congress manifesto. In October last year, Scindia had slammed his own government in Madhya Pradesh, stating that the farm loan waiver in the state was not implemented in its entirety. “Loan of only Rs 50,000 has been waived off even when he ( CM Kamal Nath) had said that loan up to Rs 2 Lakh will be waived off. Farm loan up to Rs 2 Lakh should be waived off,” he had said while speaking in Bhind.

However, Kamal Nath had then quipped that the manifesto is for five years and not five months. The rift between the two leaders broadened after the top Congress committee went with the nine times MP Kamal Nath for the Madhya Pradesh chief minister, overlooking Scindia’s bid for the post. From Kamal Nath’s current response, it seems evident that Nath does not seem to hold Scindia in high regard since it is Nath who has the sanction of the Gandhi family and not Scindia.

Read: Jyotiraditya Scindia is supreme, will be first to join if he forms new party: Congress MLA amidst increasing infighting

The relations strained further when Kamal Nath also retained the top post of Madhya Pradesh Congress. In a major embarrassment for the Congress party, Scindia also extended his support Modi government’s historic move of ending the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, in opposition to the official stand of the Congress party on the matter.
