Union govt contemplates taking online route to grant citizenship under CAA to bypass state governments

Amidst veiled threats from few opposition-ruled states that they will not be implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act, the Union government is likely to make the entire process of granting citizenship under the act online to bypass state governments, reports PTI.

According to the reports, the Ministry of Home Affairs is considering the option of doing away with the present procedure of routing applications for citizenship through the district magistrate in view of opposition expressed by several states ruled by opposition parties.

“We are thinking of designating a new authority instead of the district magistrate and make the entire process of application, examination of documents and granting Indian citizenship online,” a Home Ministry official told the news agency.

If the process of granting citizenship becomes completely online, then there will be no interference from a state government at any level.

Also, the home ministry officials are of the opinion that the state governments have no power to reject the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act as the legislation was enacted under the Union List of the 7th Schedule of the Constitution.

“The states have no power to deny implementation of a central law which is in the Union List,” the top official from the Home Ministry said.

Opposing centre’s move, the Kerala Assembly on Tuesday had passed a resolution demanding to withdraw the Citizenship Amendment Act. The ruling CPI(M)-led LDF and the opposition Congress-led UDF supported the resolution while the BJP’s lone MLA and former Union minister O Rajagopal’s was the only dissenting voice in the one-day special session.

Apart from Kerala, a few other chief ministers, including those of West Bengal, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, have already declared that the law is “unconstitutional” and stated that they will not implement the law in their respective states.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said, “In your (BJP) manifesto, instead of development issues, you have put in promise to divide the country. Why will citizenship be on the basis of religion? I will not accept this. We dare you…”.

She had added, “You can pass laws in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha forcefully because you have the number. But we will not let you divide the country”.

Echoing similar sentiments, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had said his government would not let the legislation to be implemented in his state. “We have a majority in the assembly and will block the bill,” Singh said.

Congress-ruled Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel had also claimed that act was clearly unconstitutional. “Whatever decision is made at the Congress party forum on the bill, will be applied in Chhattisgarh,” he said.

Another Congress Chief Minister Kamal Nath, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh had said, “Whatever stand the Congress party has taken on the Citizenship Amendment Act, we will follow that. Do we want to be a part of a process that sows seeds of divisiveness?”

Scam-accused senior Congress leader P Chidambaram, who is currently out on bail had also said the bill was a “brazen assault” on the fundamental ideas enshrined in the Constitution and the fate of the law will be decided in the Supreme Court.

The Citizenship Amendment act seeks to give Indian citizenship to the members of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who have come from three neighbouring Islamic countries – Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh after facing religious persecution.

The Act states the refugees of the six communities will be given Indian citizenship after residing in India for five years, instead of earlier requirement of 11 years. The Act also proposes to give immunity to such refugees facing legal cases after being found as illegal migrants. The cut-off date for granting citizenship will be December 31, 2014.

#RoadToEndia2020: Pakistanis trend doom for India in 2020 by using images from anti-CAA riots and protests

Parody nation Pakistan is at it again. While rest of the world prayed and hoped for a better tomorrow, Pakistanis on Twitter were busy trending doom for India, hoping to bring an ‘end’ to India (hence, ‘Endia’) in 2020. For this, other than using fake images, Pakistanis used the anti-CAA riots and protests to portray that Indian Muslims are under threat from the central government.

Pakistanis know about Shaheen Bagh ‘protests’ and how they are being led by women. OpIndia investigation had recently found that these protests at Shaheen Bagh, where one of the organisers is Sharjeel Imam, a JNU ‘student’, was found inciting Muslim mob to block roads and highways as protest against the law.

Pakistan clearly has a few favourites to further their propaganda.

To make things clear, CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) gives citizenship to persecuted religious minorities from three Islamic neighbouring countries, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, who had fled from these countries and sought refuge in India prior to 31.12.2014. The irony of it all is baffling.

Thank you, readers for a pathbreaking 2019: We are eternally grateful

0

The year 2019 will be over in a matter of hours and with it, the decade shall come to an end. And what a year it has been. Events of monumental significance occurred one after the other and the latter half of the year, especially, was a relentless adrenaline rush. It was a very special year for the country.

For OpIndia, this was the breakthrough year in many ways. One of our exclusive reports was mentioned by the Prime Minister himself, another was mentioned by the Solicitor General in the Supreme Court. OpIndia reached new heights this year and it was a collective effort by the team that made it possible and we take pride in that.

However, none of it would have been possible if we did not have the trust and support of the most valuable people in the battle of narrative: You, The People. Without your unconditional support and continuous encouragement, we could not have accomplished all that we have. It is you, our dear readers, who provide us with the motivation necessary to make that extra bit of effort, to try that much harder. And for that, the OpIndia team is grateful.

The relationship between OpIndia and its readers has always been one that we have cherished. Often, you have tagged us on relevant news stories and claims that you suspected were fake and requested us to verify the piece of news. When things were a bit low, you came out in our support and showered us with your love and encouragement. OpIndia will never be able to thank you enough for these kind gestures. They are a testament to the faith and trust you have put on us. And we shall be eternally grateful for that.

You have also helped us financially by paying OpIndia for our journalism. And you have been generous with the payments you have made. When OpIndia began, we could not have imagined that so many people would be willing to pay for the service that we provide. But once again, the love you have showered upon us exceeded our wildest expectations. We express our heartfelt gratitude to every single person for considering us worthy enough of your contribution.

When we entered 2019, we knew it was going to be an important year. It was the year of the General Elections. This year has been a wild ride for OpIndia. In 2019, we took back control over the narrative from the corrupt and the Lutyens elite and gave it back to you… the people. And in return, you have rewarded us with your trust and support. It is what everyone in this business aspires for and that is something you have given us in abundance.

OpIndia sincerely hopes that going forward, you will continue to put your faith in us. The year on the calendar will change from tomorrow, however, we hope the great bond that we share will not undergo any transformation. If it has to change, then we hope it only changes for the better. Once again, we express our sincere gratitude towards our readers and hope for your continued support going into the new year.

Last but not the least, we wish everyone a very very Happy New Year. And May the Gods bless you with all that you seek.

Jamia Millia Islamia university refuses to give CCTV footage of anti-CAA violence to Delhi police

Following the violence during anti-CAA protests at the Jamia Millia Islamia university earlier this month, the university administration and the Delhi Police are at loggerheads over the surrendering of the CCTV footage. While the Delhi police want to access the footage captured by CCTV cameras in the university campus to identify the rioters, the university is not agreeing for the same. The university administration had alleged that the Delhi Police had forcibly barged into the campus without permission, the police, on the other hand, had claimed that it was left with no option but to enter the university in order to prevent the situation from getting out of control.

The anti-CAA protestors in Jamia on December 15 not only carried out vandalism, arson and rioting under the pretext of ‘peaceful protests’ but they also allegedly pelted stones at the police. The CCTV footage will play an important role in ascertaining the allegations against the rioters, but the Delhi Police has so far not yet received the CCTV footage from the Jamia administration.

Read- Jamia, AMU and many other anti-CAA agitations are “protests of entitlement”

According to a senior police official, when the SHO of Jamia Nagar went to the university to collect the CCTV footage, a raft of students gathered opposing the police official from collecting the evidence. The students studiously refused to provide the CCTV footage of the December 15 protest to the police. The students’ staunch denial for handing over the evidence begs a question that if they have something to hide from the police. The SHO had to return empty-handed from the university.

However, the Jamia Millia Islamia administration had earlier assured the police in writing that the CCTV recordings would be handed over to the police so that the violence during the protests could be properly investigated. Now, it appears that the university administration is reneging on its promise to deliver the videos to the police.

Senior officials claim that if the CCTV recordings are destroyed, further action will be initiated against the university.

Defending the University administration, the Chief Proctor of Jamia, Wasim Ahmed, said, “On December 15, Delhi Police detained several Jamia students. The police had then made the students to sign a document, which read that the police will have to be given the CCTV footage for investigation. They have asked for the footage and we are considering it right now. A police officer came for this but as soon as the students came, he left from here.”

Jamia Millia Islamia has asked the Ministry of Human Resources to conduct a judicial inquiry into the entire matter. Therefore, they do not want to hand over the CCTV footage to the police. The Jamia administration has also complained to the National Human Rights Commission about the matter.

Dalit-Muslim Unity? Shehla Rashid wants Dalits to give up a part of their reservations for Muslims

As the two strong men of the Indian politics-Narendra Modi and Amit Shah set about the uncharted path of correcting the historical mistakes one by one, some closet Islamists are having a hard time reconciling with this new reality. The abrogation of Article 370, enactment of CAA and the imminent implementation of NRC and NPR have forced many left-liberal ‘intellectuals’ to drop their veneer of secularism and reveal their subterranean communalism.

Shehla Rashid, the freelance protestor-turned-politician-turned-armed chair critic had had a delirious breakdown on Twitter after several people rubbished the predominantly Muslim overtones of the anti-CAA protests.

In a series of tweets, Shehla had exposed the meticulously cultivated pretence floated by the liberals that the anti-CAA protest was a mass movement, and not just a Muslim-centric agitation. Shehla asserted that the anti-CAA protests were led and sustained by Muslims and the Muslims paid with blood for that.

Read- Career protestor Shehla Rashid busts mainstream media propaganda, claims liberals are trying to hijack Muslim struggle against CAA

In line with her assertions, Shehla posted another tweet stating that if liberals want to be an ally of Muslims then they should dump the charade of Dalit-Muslim unity and start demanding a cut in SC reservations for Dalit Muslims. Shehla alleged that the deprivation of Muslims from the reservations under SC category is “faith-based discrimination against Muslims by the Indian state”.

With this demand, it appears that Shehla Rashid has delivered the final nail in the coffin for the Dalit-Muslim Unity Project. She is now advocating for the invasion of Muslims into benefits reserved for the Dalit community. She claims ‘Dalit Muslims’ should be granted the opportunity to receive benefits under reservations for the Dalit Community.”

In reality, there is nothing called Dalit Muslims. As ‘Eminent Historians’ keep telling us, Caste is intrinsic to only the Hindu faith and the egalitarian nature of Islam is what forced many to convert in order to escape the oppressive caste system. Therefore, people cannot turn around now and claim that caste is a feature of the Muslim community too, nor can they feign victimhood accusing the Indian state of faith-based discrimination.

In essence, Shehla Rashid’s demands mean that Dalits will now have to sacrifice their share of reservations and accommodate Muslims in order to achieve Dalit-Muslim Unity. It also means that Shehla had realised that the drawbacks of promoting the Dalit-Muslim Unity project has far outweighed the theoretical benefits it may have yielded. It has dawned upon Shehla that Modi and Shah cannot be stopped by continuing the same banal rhetoric of Dalit-Muslim unity. It is, perhaps, this sobering realisation that has made Shehla to effectively put to rest the farce of Dalit-Muslim unity and demand a share into the privileges currently reserved for Dalits only.

Case registered against Congress politician and writer Nellai Kannan for lamenting that Muslims are not ‘finishing’ Modi and Shah

A day after the Congress politician and acclaimed Tamil writer, Nellai Kannan made a despicable remark against Home Minister Amit Shah calling for his murder, an FIR has been filed against him today.

Kannan has been booked under Sections 504, 505(1) and 505(2) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) after various BJP leaders registered multiple complaints against the writer.

In a meeting that was called by the Social Democratic Party of India on December 29, the Tamil academician was heard brazenly inciting the Muslims gathered there, by telling them that “he expected but no Muslim doing it”, hinting that he expected that the Muslims in the country would kill Home Minister Amit Shah for implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act, which they have been falsely claiming to be anti-Muslims, but no Muslim has yet killed him.

Nellai Kannan had said that Home Minister Amit Shah is acting as the brain behind PM Modi and that if his story was ‘finished’, that of the PM would also be over too. “If his story is finished, then the story of the PM would also be over. I was expecting something to happen, but no Muslim is doing it,” Kannan said during the rally.

Nellai Kannan has fought elections on a Congress ticket in the past and is largely viewed as a Congress supporting voice.

The Islamist outfits Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and its sister organisation Popular Front of India (PFI) have been accused of extreme communalism and has a long history of resorting to violence against their political opponents.

The PFI is also accused by the National Investigation Agency for being involved in love-jihad cases in Kerala. Recently, the SDPI members were also arrested in connection with the brutal murder of ABVP worker in Kannur. Recently, PFI members were accused of killing 42-year-old activist Ramalingam. The activist was brutally murdered for opposing religious conversion. The accused PFI members have been preaching conversion to Islam.

In December, two people, former members of the extremist Islamist organisation, Popular Front of India (PFI) had joined the IS. The police said that K Sajjad and Anwar Poothappara had links with the radical Islamic outfit in the past.

In fact, it has been established that radical Islamist groups like PFI and SDPI and mainstream political parties conspired to perpetrate violence and unleash riots during the anti-CAA protests in various parts of the country.

Today, Uttar Pradesh DGP, Om Prakash Singh, has written a letter to the Home ministry, requesting to ban PFI in the state as soon as possible.

Madhya Pradesh minister Jitu Patwari caught on camera assaulting own party workers, kicks and pushes party man out of room

In a video that has gone viral on social media, minister of sports and youth welfare in Kamal Nath’s government in Madhya Pradesh, Jitu Patwari was caught abusing and assaulting his own party workers.

Unabashed by the camera persons present in the room, the Congress minister was seen indulging in blatant hooliganism as he kicks and punches his own party workers in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, as they allegedly took time to vacate the room in the circuit house, where he was supposed to hold a media briefing.

The incident occurred when two factions of the Congress came face to face in Patwari’s office. The minister asked the workers to go out, however, they did not pay heed to him. Due to this, Patwari lost his cool and himself started pushing them out of the room.

BJP leaders reacted strongly to this incident calling it a “usual” spectacle from the Congress stating that it shows the “values” that the Congress party imparts on its members. Taking a jibe at the Congress leader, Media in-charge of Madhya Pradesh BJP, Lokendra Parashar took to Twitter to share the video and wrote. “Honorable Jeetu Patwari Saheb, Higher Education Minister, handling law and order in Rewa.”

Jitu Patwari, who is a close aid of Rahul Gandhi and is also in his inner circle in the state, also has a criminal case pending against him. He is accused of assaulting a policemen in 2007 after he was stopped by police for driving a car without number plate. In January 2019, the state cabinet in Madhya Pradesh, had initialised the process to withdraw criminal cases registered against Congress workers, leaders and farmers in the last fifteen years.

Moreover, the minister has earlier also come under the limelight for his controversial behaviour against his own party members. Last year, during the Madhya Pradesh elections, a video had gone viral in which Jitu Patwari meeting and greeting people in his constituency was heard saying, “Aap meri laaj rakho, party gayi tel lene, meri izzat ka khyal rakho (You just take care of me. Dump the party, you just take care of my reputation).”

2010-2019: Virat Kohli to Kumar Sangakkara, here is the test cricket team of the decade

0
As the decade draws to an end, we look back at a fascinating decade of Cricket to select our best XI during the 2010s. A mix of statistics, standout performances, and bit of personal bias played a part in this selection.
So here are the elevel players we think make the strongest team of this decade.

Alastair Cook: In a decade where openers struggled for the large part, Sir Alastair Cook stood head and shoulders above everyone else. Cook ended up with the most runs during this decade, 8,818, and his 23 centuries during this period have only been bettered by the freak duo of Steve Smith And Virat Kohli. He had a couple of lean years in the middle of the decade and an average 2018 before his retirement, but England’s struggles at the top of the order since his retirement underline his value to the team.
David Warner: An absolute beast at home, average away but David Warner does enough to beat the other contenders to be the opening partner alongside Cook. Scored same number of centuries as Cook, 23, while compiling 7088 runs this decade including a magnificent 335* at the end of the decade against Pakistan. His reputation took a beating when he was suspended for an year by Cricket Australia after the “sandpaper scandal” but he has firmly put that behind him during this Australian summer.
Kumar Sangakkara (c): Among batsmen with 1500+ runs this decade (yes we put that qualifier only to discount Voges), only Steve Smith averaged higher than Sangakkara’s 61.40. The smooth left hander was in irresistible form during the first half of the decade as he kept piling on the runs. Sanga scored 17 of his 38 Test hundreds this decade, including 4 double centuries, 1 triple centuries and a score of 199*. He also becomes our captain since we think that the suave charismatic Sangakkara might be able to bring all these big names and egos together.
Steve Smith: In his first Test in 2010, Steve Smith batted at Number 8 and 9 in the 2 innings, scoring 1 and 12 respectively. By the time 2019 ended, he was hailed as the greatest Test batsman since Don Bradman and even a half century from the man was seen as a failure. From a leg spinner who could bat a bit to the premier batsman in the format, It is the most stunning transformation in Cricket since Hansie Cronje turned into a cheat. Just like Warner, he missed an year after sandpaper gate but he exorcised those ghosts during a phenomenal Ashes where he wrested the Ashes for Australia.
Virat Kohli: It was the decade of Virat Kohli, the best all format batsman, the only man to average 50+ in all formats, he can walk into any Test side of the decade. After an average start to his Test career, Kohli announced he belongs at this level with his century in Adelaide at the end of the 2012 tour, and hasn’t looked back since. Nobody has scored more than the 27 Test centuries compiled by the Indian captain, and combined with his ODI centuries, he is looking set to become the 2nd batsman to breach the 100 international centuries mark.
AB De Villiers (wk): It was tempting to go for a specialist wicket keeper but how do you keep the phenomenon called AB out. Whether you want to accelerate to set up a target or you want to block whole day to see out a draw, AB is your man. In total, AB scored over 5000 runs in this decade at an average of 57.48 with a career best of 278* in Abu Dhabi against Pakistan.
In the matches AB played as a Wicket Keeper, his average jumps to 57.41, against his overall career average of 50.66.
Ben Stokes: Tough to choose the all-rounder between Shakib Al Hasan and Ben Stokes, both performed outstandingly well during the decade, but since he is expected to bat at Number 7 in this line-up, we have gone for Ben Stokes, someone more suited to bat with the lower order. Played some outstanding innings with the bat, like the exhilarating 258 in South Africa or one of the greatest ever Test knocks in Headingley and always delivered the goods with the ball for the team. Whenever his captain desperately needed a wicket or needed someone to make something happen, he put his hand up.
Ravichandran Ashwin: One of India’s biggest match-winners in a decade where they marched their way to Number 1 position in Test rankings. Ashwin picked up 362 wickets at 25.36, and also scoring 2,385 runs with 4 centuries during this period. Along with Jadeja, Ashwin formed a potent pair that made Indian invincible at home.
Dale Steyn: The greatest fast bowler of his generation. While Broad and Anderson may have more wickets than him, Steyn is streets ahead of them when it comes to average or strike rate. Before finally losing the battle to injuries, Steyn picked up 439 wickets in total, 267 of them during this decade. Seaming home tracks or flat Indian wickets, Steyn was highly potent everywhere and picked up wickets all over the world.
Stuart Broad: 7th most successful bowler of all times, Broad picked up 403 wickets during this decade while forming one of the greatest fast bowling partnerships with James Anderson. For a fast bowler, he also managed to keep his fitness levels remarkably high, playing the most test matches this decade, level with Cook, 111. When Broad got on a roll, batsmen had no chance as he ran through one batsman after another. His 8 for 15 at Nottingham will go down in Ashes history as one of the greatest spells of fast bowling.
James Anderson: The most successful bowler during this decade with 429 wickets. The first fast bowler to ever reach 150 Test matches. The most successful fast bowler of all time. James Anderson has been breaking records all over the place during this decade and deservedly gets his spot in the team of the decade. The tag of “clouderson” has been firmly shed during this decade as well as he picked wickets in different countries under all kinds of conditions. Still looking in peak physical shape, he is set to become the first fast bowler to touch the 600 wickets mark.

A year when the country changed fundamentally, but not the media: Top 10 lies spread by the mainstream media in 2019

One of the most monumental years in the history of Independent India is drawing to a close. Although the country has changed fundamentally in many ways, one institution hasn’t changed all that much: The Fourth Pillar of our Democracy. Thus, as we are poised to enter a new year, it is a good time to revisit some of the worst lies the mainstream media spread over the last 12 months.

1. The Wire uses 2015 survey and laces it with lies to say mental health issues on the rise in Kashmir post abrogation of Article 370

The report resorts to a classic propaganda method. It tries to add useless information in order to obfuscate from what the headline claims, that is, mental health deteriorating after the abrogation of Article 370. While the article includes a host of useless information that has nothing to do with the subject, it then uses conjecture and speculation to tie it all together and somehow, assert that Kashmiris are facing mental health issues after the abrogation of Article 370.

The Wire headline clearly asserts that there is a mental healthcare crisis in the state owing to the decision of the central government, however, at the very outset of the article, The Wire simply admits that it is a mere prediction by doctors, who have not been named in the entire article. They then proceed to spin a yarn that would leave the readers dizzy. The Wire talks about a 2015 survey that they use as an indication of the mental health issues prevalent in Kashmir.

The Wire article uses the statement of an anon physician to make a conclusion that the data does not support. Firstly, The Wire article proclaims that the number of health issue cases have gone up since the abrogation of Article 370. Then, they quote a physician to say that the actual effect of the move on mental health will be visible only a few years from now. Then, they use the lie about Kashmiris having no access to healthcare to insinuate that while mental health issues have increased, the cases in August are low because of no access to healthcare, however, since the cases were even lower in May and the highest in June, the data is inconclusive.

2. Shekhar Gupta and The Print sell their soul, blame Yediyurappa for a Kumaraswamy era scandal that names Congress leaders

Most people had imagined that the Media industry had already fallen as far as they possibly could deep into the abyss of irresponsibility, paid news, propaganda and just blatant lies. However, Shekhar Gupta, the chief of Editors Guild and his ‘news’ portal The Print come as a stench of the rotting soul when they manage to stoop further at every given opportunity. Shekhar Gupta and The Print managed to blame the Yediyurappa government that was recently sworn in Karnataka for a scandal that had broken during the tenure of JDS’ Kumaraswamy and names Congress leaders like Ahmed Patel.

While Tweeting a line from the transcript that said ‘Ahmed Patel said I will make him commissioner, Revanna will support’, Shekhar Gupta, the head of The Print and chief of Editors Guild, went on to peddle lies and allege that this was the first scandal that had hit the newly sworn-in Yediyurappa government. The line tweeted by Shekhar Gupta himself mentions senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel who is close to Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and Revanna, who is the brother of former Karnataka Chief Minister from JDS, HD Kumaraswamy. The Print story itself started off by spreading lies and telling its readers that this scandal has turned the heat up on the BJP government in Karnataka.

3. How media glossed over the fact that dancers were asked to strip at an Eid celebration and not just any ‘cultural event’

In a horrific incident, girls of the rainbow dance group were invited to perform for an event celebrating Eid and were then heckled by a mob and forced to strip naked and dance. One vehicle of the dance group was also attacked by axes and steel digger bars, causing substantial damage to the vehicle.

The Rainbow dance group’s director Arup D Rabha filed an FIR with Boko police station regarding the incident, where he has named Kuddus Ali, Sayed Khan, Atikul Islam, Samajuddin, Jeherul Islam and Abbas Ali, along with all the members of the organising committee of the event as the accused in the case. Shahrukh Khan and Subahan Khan were arrested as well.

The reportage surrounding this horrific incident was nothing short of shameful, to say the least. The Media has conveniently glossed over the fact that the horrific incident actually took place during an Eid celebration, staying true to their tradition of underreporting crimes related to the minority community.

4. ECI explains in detail why reported ‘mismatch’ of data and allegations of ‘ghost votes’ being polled is fake news

Website NewsClick.com had published a malicious report peddling the ‘EVM hacked’ theory. The report alleged that thousands of phantom votes are suspected in several Lok Sabha constituencies in Bihar, UP, Delhi and MP. The website, which is a promoter of dubious Hate Crime Watch in association with FactChecker.in, says they analysed eight constituencies, where they found that excess votes recorded in these seats are more than the winning margin. OpIndia had fact-checked the NewsClick report to show how these conclusions were drawn based on fake data using provisional data on the ECI website as the final voter turnout numbers. Later, the ECI issued a detailed clarification as well.

5. Times of India spreads fake news, says Meerut student Umam Khanam was “harassed” for “not wearing a BJP cap”

Times of India, one of the leading publications of the country, which often indulges in propagating fake news, was yet again caught peddling half-truths regarding the suspension of 22-year old Meerut Law Student.

In a report, Times of India journalist Piyush Rai resorted to false propaganda to target the BJP by reporting that the 22-year old Meerut Law College student was suspended after she refused to wear a BJP cap. He further claimed that the “inebriated” students who had allegedly molested Umam Khanam for ‘refusing to put on a BJP cap’ were also rusticated.

However, ground reports by Swati Goel Sharma of Swarajya and conversations OpIndia had with Khanam’s classmates proved conclusively that the entire thing was a giant hoax. In due course, the series of events as they panned out exposed the lies spread by TOI as well.

6. Winner of Nobel Prize in Economics rubbishes ThePrint report about him helping Rahul Gandhi on election promises

On 31st January, ThePrint ran a report by one D. K. Singh who claimed that Angus Deaton, a British economist who won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2015 along with French economist Thomas Piketty were advising the Congress on its minimum income guarantee program.

ThePrint states that according to party leaders, the party reached out to the two economists since Rahul Gandhi had “studied their work”. However, when OpIndia reached out to Deaton, he denied being associated with Congress or Rahul Gandhi. In a one-line email, Deaton said that he has had no contact with Congress on this or anything else.

The French economist Thomas Piketty, however, did confirm “exchanging with Congress about how much it would cost and how to implement this”. He added that “it is high time to move from the politics of caste conflict to the politics of income and wealth redistribution.” Thus, Shekhar Gupta’s ThePrint ran a story without confirming or verifying independently with the Nobel laureate and based it on what Congress leaders fed the journalist.

7. The Print indulges in scaremongering, spreads fake news about the shortage of polio vaccine in the country

On January 24, 2019, The Print published a rather alarming report saying that India doesn’t have polio vaccine for the next round of immunization. The report said that the country is facing acute shortage of polio vaccines, and due to that reason, the Modi government has indefinitely postponed the next polio immunization on February 3. According to The Print, there was a shortage of both types of vaccines, OPV and IPV (Oral Poliovirus Vaccine and Inactivated Poliovirus Vaccine, which is given by injection).

The report published by The Print was fake, the government clarified that there was no shortage of polio vaccine in the country, and the immunisation programme had not been postponed indefinitely. They later updated their article with the clarification from the ministry, but the fake claims that they made in the report were still there.

8. Journalist’ Abhisar Sharma spreads fake news by morphing images to target other journalist, deletes after getting caught

In his show on HW Network, a platform used by molestation accused Vinod Dua to propagate fake news as well, Abhisar Sharma edited images of the content of a show to target Aaj Tak journalist Chitra Tripathi. He posted a propaganda video to question the silence of some of the journalists after another controversial journalist and hero of Indian ‘liberal-secular’ media – Ravish Kumar won the Ramon Magsaysay award.

Questioning their integrity, Abhisar Sharma put out an image of a show hosted by Chitra Tripathi in which it can be seen that the title card of the show has been carefully edited out by Abhisar Sharma to convey that the anchor credited Prime Minister Modi for the success of Chandrayaan-2 mission. However, in reality, there was no reference to PM Modi in the show.

Chitra Tripathi’s show on Aaj Tak had a title “Ab Chaand Hamara Mutti Mein (Now, the moon is within our reach)”. But, Abhisar Sharma, who has an inherent hatred towards Prime Minister edited out the title part to “Ab Chaand Modi ki Mutti Mein (Now, the moon is within Modi’s reach) to target Chitra Tripathi.

9. Shivam Vij and The Print brazen out allegations of inventing quotes, Shekhar Gupta says ‘we need to own up to failures’

Well, Shekhar Gupta did not say ‘we need to own up to failures’. Certainly not in the context of Shivam Vij, contributing editor of Shekhar Gupta led The Print who concocted quotes and then brazened it out. Shekhar Gupta actually said this in 2007 when he was with the Indian Express. But since The Print believes in attributing decade-old quotes to current scenarios, we thought it would be a fun exercise to see how time changes context.

Shivam Vij, the contributing editor of The Print, has been accused of inventing a quote out of thin air for his report titled ‘Why Kashmiri Pandits may never return to the Valley’. Shivam Vij used a conversation he claims to have had with author Arvind Gigoo in order to peddle his agenda. The son of the Kashmiri Pandit “quoted”, Siddhartha Gigoo, came out on Twitter and accused Shivam Vij of lying, saying that his father never gave such a quote and has never spoken to The Print.

Shivam Vij claimed that the quote is accurate and was taken in 2010-2012. That is almost a decade ago when terrorism in Kashmir was at its peak. When Gigoo confronts Vij, shamelessly and brazenly, Vij asks Gigoo if ‘he has gone crazy’. The Print and Shivam Vij seem to be of the opinion that a decade-old opinion when the times and situations were different can simply be quoted out of context to suit their current propaganda. After this shameless display of arrogance by The Print and Shivam Vij, the publication led by Shekhar Gupta sneakily changed the paragraph where Arvind Gigoo was quoted.

10. Half a million or 1 million? While media peddles fantastical claims, here are the actual number of troops deployed in Jammu and Kashmir

One of the pet propaganda theory which emanated long back from Pakistan is that India has 700,000 troops deployed in Kashmir valley with the express purpose of holding down the people of Kashmir. As Ajai Shukla notes in a piece on this very subject: “Pakistani propaganda and Kashmiri human rights organisations, such as the influential J&K Coalition of Civil Society, repeatedly state that India controls Kashmir by deploying 700,000 security-men across the state. It is often alleged that half the Indian Army is based in J&K”.

However, the situation has now further evolved. The latest number of Indian security personnel in Jammu & Kashmir is 1 million! Yes, that’s 1,000,000 troops deployed in Jammu & Kashmir with the express purpose to hold the local population, according to media that doesn’t much care about facts. Some others have a more nuanced approach; they claim that 500,000 or half a million troops are deployed in Kashmir (as against Jammu & Kashmir) to hold the province and ‘subjugate’ the local population.

However, the actual numbers are very different. Read our story.

This is why the decade is ending in 2019, and not in 2020. Some Maths and lots of history

As the day comes to an end at midnight, the year 2019 will end, and the world will welcome the year 2020. But this time people are not just welcoming a new year, they are also welcoming a new decade. It is widely believed that the current decade began on 1st January of 2010, and will end on 31st December 2019. But although it is widely believed, not everyone accepts that, as many people say that there isa year left in the current decade, which will end on 31st December of 2020.

This is not the first time this debate is happening, this happens every time the last digit of the year changes from 9 to 0. But these debates became big after 1999-2000, as people could use chatrooms and social media on the internet, instead of just writing letters to editors. This time, digital media house Mashable has raised the bar of the debate by several notches, by declaring that if a person believes that the decade will on 31st December 2020, that person is an a$$hole.

So, when does the decade actually end? There is no definite answer to this. Whether you think it begins in 2020 or 2021 depends on what is more important for you, technically correct or convention. This fight between team zero and team one is actually a fight between mathematics and history.

If we go by the technically correct option, the decade will end after the end of the year 2020. Because, in the current Anno Domini system, there was no year 0. The current AD system was devised by a monk named Dionysius Exiguus. He had identified the birth year of Jesus Christ as 1, not 0. As a result, the calendar directly goes from 1 BC to 1 AD, there is no year zero in between.

Therefore, the first decade of the AD era should be year 1 to year 10, and the second decade began on year 11, and so on. If we believe that the current decade ends after 2019, then it means that the first decade had ended after the year 9. As that decade had started on year 1, remember there was no year 0, this means that the first decade had only 9 years, a huge mathematical anomaly. Moreover, people start learning counting numbers from 1 to 10, not 0 to 9. Therefore, it seems natural that the zero year should the last year of a decade, not first.

Therefore, the team zero has solid technical point in their side, but it is the team one that always wins. Because technicalities are not always important in day to day life, what is important is the convention in this regard. As Mashable says, technically tomatoes are fruits, but we don’t go by that scientifically correct definition, and refer to lots of fruits as vegetables, refer to lots of berries and nuts as fruits, and so on.

Historically, a decade means the year 0 to 9, like 1950 to 1959, 1980 to 1989 etc. They are called the 50s decade, the 80s decade etc. The digit in the tens place of the year determines the decade, and when it changes, the decade changes. Therefore, the 2010-2019 is one decade, the 10s, and the next decade will be 2020-2021, the 20s. Now if we want to be technically correct, we will have to rewrite lots of history that took place in zero years, as for example if something happened in 1980, they will need to be moved from the 80s decade to the 70s decade. When someone is botn in 1990, we say she was born on the 90s, not 80s. Here, 1990 is the first decade of the 90s decade.

As the term decade is used to refer to a period of ten years, it becomes less confusing when the digit in the tens place is the same. And with that convention, 2019 marks the last year of the current decade.

In conclusion, technically the decade will after the year 2020, but as per convention and common use, the decade is ending tonight itself. Just like we don’t call brinjals and cucumbers fruits just because they are botanically fruits, people ignore the science of the decades and use what is commonly used system. Here the common use wins over science.
