IDMA condemns the high-handedness of Maharashtra govt in arresting Republic TV chief Arnab Goswami, demands his immediate release

India’s largest digital news association – Indian Digital Media Association (IDMA) has condemned the state high-handedness of the Maharashtra government displayed against Republic TV and its chief Arnab Goswami.

On Wednesday, the IDMA issued a strong-worded statement condemning the assault and the arrest of the Republic TV chief Arnab Goswami in a 2018 suicide case and demanded the immediate release of the Republic TV chief.

In its statement, IDMA has strongly condemned the sudden arrest of the Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami and added that it was shocked to learn about the arrests and the high-handedness shown by the Mumbai police. The IDMA also pointed out how Goswami and his family were assaulted and several vans were changed while forcibly taking him to the police station.

“Republic TV further says that the Mumbai Police had no arrest warrant or court order for the arrest of Arnab Goswami. From the visuals, it was evident that the police were forcing Mr Goswami’s wife and the executive was being asked to sign on some paper, the nature of which is not evident, the IDMA statement noted.

Further, IDMA said it strongly condemned the action of the Maharashtra government, that seems to be using its state machinery to silence a journalist and a channel that has on occasion criticised the government.

“This incident is not just limited to the stifling of the freedom of the press, but it is an infringement of personal freedom and liberty granted to every citizen of the country. When the people who are meant to protect citizens become the very people that citizens need protection from, the collective might of democracy needs to enforce itself to demand fairness,” the country’s first nationalistic digital media association.

It added, “The police is well within its right to constitute action against any party it thinks has erred, however, the process of the law has to be followed. This incident only appears to be a zenith in the witch-hunt that was launched by the government against Republic TV over the past few weeks.”

IDMA demands immediate release of Republic TV chief Arnab Goswami

The IDMA demanded that Arnab Goswami be released immediately and that the state government offers an explanation to the people of India, as to why a citizen’s rights are being stifled in the manner that it is.

“We, as a group representing digital news orgs are especially dismayed that if such high-handedness can be displayed towards a legacy media, smaller digital outfits could simply be crushed by the might of the state to ensure that dissenting voices are muzzled. However, such attempts will be opposed and fought by IDMA, for the sake of the right of the media, its right to be free and fair, and for the citizen’s civil liberties,” the statement added.

Republic TV is one of the founding members of IDMA, which is the country’s largest conglomeration of digital media platforms that puts the nation’s interest above everything else. The IDMA has a collective unique viewership of over a 100 million users.

Editors’ Guild of India issues statement

Following the arrest of Republic TV chief, the Editors’ Guild of India too issued a statement condemning his arrest.

The Editors’ Guild, in a muted response, urged Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to ensure that he is treated fairly and state power is not used against critical reporting by the media.

It is pertinent to note that Arnab Goswami had resigned from the Editors Guild of India on live TV, over its diminishing credibility and abject silence. During the course of a debate on the lynching of two Sadhus and a driver in Palghar, he had slammed the President of the Guild, Shekhar Gupta, for destroying the remaining credibility of the organisation.

Republic TV chief Arnab Goswami arrested

Continuing their witch-hunt against Republic TV chief, the Mumbai Police on Wednesday arrested Arnab Goswami. The Mumbai Police reached Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami’s residence on Wednesday and physically manhandled him as they tried to detain him in a 2018 abetment to suicide case that was already closed.

A team of Mumbai Police arrested Republic TV chief Arnab Goswami after they physically assaulted and dragged him by grabbing his hair. In May 2018, an FIR was filed against Arnab Goswami after an interior designer had committed suicide in Mumbai. In a suicide note, Anvay Naik claimed Goswami owed him a total of Rs 5.4 crore. Mumbai Police arrests Republic TV chief Arnab Goswami in a 2018 closed case

In a brazen display of high-handedness, Mumbai Police, at the behest of the Uddhav Thackeray government, barged into the residence of Arnab Goswami on Wednesday morning, physically assaulted him and dragged him into a police van and took him to the Raigad police station. It is said that the Mumbai police team armed with assault weapons such as AK-47, led by encounter specialist Sachin Vaze, barged into Arnab’s house, without any summons, documents or court papers and arrested the journalist. The Mumbai Police team also blocked Republic Media Network’s reporters from entering Arnab’s residence and have sealed all entry and exit points.

Arnab Goswami was arrested in a 2018 abetment to suicide case that has been closed and that has nothing to do with the TRP case in which there has been an attempt to implicate Republic TV.

Soon after the arrest, Arnab Goswami said that Mumbai Police assaulted his wife, minor son at his residence. Reportedly, Arnab Goswami’s elderly father-in-law and mother-in-law were also assaulted by the Mumbai Police.

Since the Mumbai police have feloniously arrested Republic TV editor-in-chief, Arnab Goswami, support has been pouring in for him from all quarters for the latter.

Aam Aadmi Party and Congress leaders and supporters who like to cry ‘fascism’ if a Modi critic even sneezes have taken to social media to celebrate Arnab Goswami’s arrest by Mumbai Police. In a mighty show of power, Mumbai Police officers who were reportedly carrying AK47 assault rifles, pulled Arnab by hair, assaulted him as well as his minor son and in-laws as they arrested him for a 2018 case which has already been closed by court.

However, instead of condemning the arrest of a journalist critical of state government, the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party supporters and leaders have taken to celebrating it.

Aam Aadmi Party spokesperson took to Twitter to say that Arnab ‘deserves’ no sympathy, thereby justifying use of force by Mumbai Police. Congress leaders also took credit for Arnab’s arrest.

Congress leaders wanted to take credit for having led the movement to get Arnab arrested. In fact, they went ahead and even resorted to spreading misinformation regarding the 2018 abetment to suicide case.

Congress leaders like Gaurav Pandhi and Ruchira Chaturvedi cited a report on 2018 abetment to suicide case that named Goswami.

However, they chose to skip the part where after the closure report was filed after Mumbai Police’s investigation, the case was closed by the court.

Others, too, cheered Arnab Goswami’s arrest.

Rahul Gandhi fan too cheered for Mumbai Police. Champions of freedom of speech, too, were happy.

Indian Railways has lost approximately Rs.500 crores in revenues due to the ‘Rail Roko’ agitation in Punjab. All Industries and Trade Forum president Badish Jindal said that the overall loss the state’s businesses have incurred is close to Rs.5000 crore as ‘farmers’ continue to block railway lines. From the steel industry to essential commodities, Punjab is facing a shortage of almost everything. Due to the inaction of the government of Punjab, power stations are unable to get coal for power generation leading to a severe shortage across the state.

High Court slams Punjab govt for failing to follow the rule of law

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has expressed its displeasure on the failure of the Punjab government to clear the railway tracks. The High Court had said on 29th October that the Punjab government is unable to handle law and order. The High Court had even stated that in case the government fails to get the tracks cleared, it will issue an order and write that the Punjab government has failed to follow the constitution.

Additional Solicitor General Satyapal Jain, who was appearing for the centre, informed the court that the Punjab government is trying to blame the centre for not letting goods trains in the state. Chief Minister Amrinder Singh wrote to Union Minister Piyush Goyal, demanding resumption of goods and passenger trains in the state.

Jain said that the Punjab government is claimed the tracks are empty, but the trains are being intercepted and searched at several places. High Court had directed the Punjab government and centre to find a solution to the problem at the earliest.

Punjab Government hinted blame on Centre for lack of coal for power generation

In a social media post, the Punjab government said, “Punjab runs out of power as coal stocks dry up completely due to goods trains’ suspension. Consumers brace for massive power cuts as the last thermal power plant shuts down operations.” The post was published on Facebook and now-locked Twitter account of the Punjab government. During his statement in the assembly, Singh said PSPCL is making daily payments in advance to Northern Grid at Rs.12.23 per unit as well as an unscheduled interchange charge of Rs 8.73 as the state is unable to get coal for the power stations.

Netizens quickly refuted the Punjab government’s claim and urged Captain Amrinder to get the Railway Tracks cleared instead of blaming Indian Railways.

As per reports, agitators are blocking railway services in Jandiala, Jagraon, Phillaur, Muktsar, Kartarpur, Fazilka, Romana Albel Singh, Gangsar Jaito, Faridkot, Firozpur, Buttari, Moga, and Makhu. At every location, around 10 to 20 agitators are blocking the tracks. They have put up tents in several locations to ensure the complete blockade of the tracks.

Piyush Goyal had requested the Punjab government to clear tracks

On 26th October, in reply to Captain Amrinder’s demand to restart goods and passenger trains in Punjab, Railways Minister Piyush Goyal had urged the Punjab government to ensure full security, clear the track of agitators for the complete resumption of the services, and guarantee security for the free run of all trains.

Goyal, in a letter to the Punjab CM, had said that Railways had commenced freight operations on 23rd October, but it was stopped as sporadic blockade of tracks continued. Agitators are still outside the powerhouses and railway stations, disrupting the smooth services. “Without total withdrawal of the blockade, our staffs, particularly Loco Pilots and Guards are not confident of running trains,” he further said. There were reports of Loco Pilots being assaulted by the agitators as well.

Goyal also mentioned that over 200 rakes of freight were stranded in Punjab due to the agitations.

Train services suspended due to Rail Roko agitation over farmers bills

The Rail Roko agitations in Punjab started in September, after which Railways suspended its services in the state stating security reasons. The services were resumed for a short span but again suspended as the government of Punjab failed to get the tracks cleared. In September, the Central government announced three new bills for the agriculture industry. These bills are aimed to remove the middlemen from the sale and purchase of the produce. However, opposition parties tried to paint the bills as an attempt to remove Minimum Selling Price (MSP) and alleged that the Modi government brought these bills to facilitate large players in the agriculture business. Captain Amrinder had tabled a resolution to bypass the new regulations.

He said that this action by Mumbai Police is misuse of state power agains Republic TV and Arnab Goswami and it is an attack on individual freedom. “This attack on free press must and WILL BE OPPOSED,” he said.

Earlier today, as reported by Republic TV, Mumbai Police team led by encounter specialist Sachin Vaze carrying assault rifles like AK 47 entered Arnab Goswami’s house and assaulted him. Arnab Goswami’s minor son, his parents-in law were also subjected to assault. He was subsequently put in a pole van and arrested.

2018 abetment to suicide case

In May 2018, an FIR was filed against Arnab Goswami in an alleged abetment to suicide case. An interior designer had committed suicide in his bungalow in Alibaug. In a suicide note, Anvay Naik claimed Goswami and the other two persons—Feroz Shaikh and Niteish Sarda—owed him a total of Rs 5.4 crore. Mumbai Police marks 1.5 lakh Twitter accounts for posting ‘defamatory content’ against state govt, initiates legal action

On 3rd November, the Mumbai Police released a press note stating they have marked over 1.5 Twitter accounts for posting defamatory content against the Government of Maharashtra, Mumbai Police, Commissioner of Police, and others. The majority of these accounts were allegedly created or surfaced recently after the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

In October, Mumbai Police had stated that over 80,000 social media accounts were created for ‘defaming’ Police Commissioner and police force in Sushant Singh Rajput case. As per the latest press note, the team of cyber experts with Mumbai Police has marked approximately 1.5 lakh Twitter accounts during the technical investigation. As many as 80 percent of them were reported as suspicious. They made ‘negative tweets’, retweets, and comments against Shiv Sena-led Maharashtra Government and Mumbai Police. “Their activities surprisingly showcased the drastic leap in the number of Tweets per day, number of followers, following, which is quite difficult for an individual who is a genuine user of Twitter or any social media platform to express his own opinion for certain social topics,” the report further added.

Understanding ‘Bots’ or fake accounts on social media platforms

Bots are fake accounts that are used to push trends on social media platforms. Such accounts are controlled by software using Twitter API. As these accounts can be automated to generate tweets, retweets, likes, shares, and even replies in DMs, many digital marketing companies use such fake accounts to promote their clients. There are services available where one can buy likes, retweets, views, etc. at a very low price. This technology is often deemed as illegal by the social media platforms as it uses unfair means of promoting a trend on social media platforms. Such fake accounts or Bots periodically removed from the social media platforms to safeguard the interest of the users. It was reported in June that Twitter had deleted 1.7 fake accounts that were promoting Chinese narrative. In August, rapped Badshah had reportedly confessed of using such services for promoting his account on social media platforms.

The majority of accounts are Bots

As per the press release, during a more in-depth investigation into these accounts, Mumbai Police found that many of the marked Twitter accounts were Bots and fake accounts operated with the help of Bots. Most of the accounts were being operated from different countries, but some of such Bots have Indian IP addresses. They alleged that these Bots were used to ‘spread defamatory contents against the Government of Maharashtra and Mumbai Police’.

In the report, Mumbai Police noted that there were several fake accounts in the names of known celebrities such as Raveena Tondon and several others. These accounts were used to “execute the defamation over social media platform Twitter. During the investigation, Mumbai police found this fake account is a BOT,” the report further added.

Hashtags and important mentions By Bots

Cyber experts prepared a list of hashtags and important mentions that were used to “defame Mumbai Police”.

“Primarily, we were suspecting the involvement of such kind of technology (BOT) must be getting used to operating anonymously, but now it’s quite evident after the confirmation from Cyber Expert, that BOTS are getting used by culprits/sponsored personalities to execute the fake account activity and it’s a major breakthrough,” the report said.

Accounts are disappearing, says Mumbai Police

Mumbai Police suggested in the report that many accounts that were involved in the defamation are disappearing from the social media platform. Some accounts are deleting the defamatory content to ‘evade investigation process’. Many of these accounts are being operated from outside India from countries like China, Panama, Hong Kong, Nepal, and others. They are using Proxy Server to hide their identity. The experts have found few accounts that were operated within India. They were also using Proxy Servers.

“For further investigation, the details of all the accounts which are suspicious in nature as Bot, will be handover to Twitter to confirm the details and eliminate them with immediate effects while maintaining the Evidence for further course of action,” the report further added. Mumbai Cyber Cell is investigating the case further with the help of Cyber Experts.

In a shocking display of might of state, the Mumbai Police not only assaulted and dragged Republic TV chief Arnab Goswami before making the arrest but also physically assaulted his minor son and other family members reports Republic TV.

Speaking to the media soon after the arrest, Arnab Goswami said that Mumbai Police assaulted his wife, minor son at his residence. Reportedly, Arnab Goswami’s elderly father-in-law and mother-in-law were also assaulted by the Mumbai Police.

“They beat my son. They did not allow to meet my in-laws”, Arnab Goswami informed the media through the van’s window after he was assaulted and picked him by Mumbai Police from his house in Mumbai.

Mumbai Police carried AK-47 to arrest Arnab Goswami

According to Republic Media Network’s Niranjan Narayanaswamy, at least 10 Mumbai Police personnel armed with assault weapons such as AK-47 barged into Arnab Goswami’s residence on Wednesday to arrest him in a 2018 case which was closed after court’s order. He added that more than 30 Mumbai Police personnel armed with weapons arrested and dragged him to Raigad police station in connection with the case.

Niranjan Narayanaswamy said that the same Mumbai Police team-led by Encounter Specialist Sachin Vaze, which had interrogated him in the ‘Fake TRP’ scam, was present at the residence of Arnab Goswami. According to Republic TV, Vaze informed them that Goswami was arrested under Section 306 in the abetment to suicide case.

“He stated that the ‘case was opened’ when told that the case had been closed,” the Republic TV journalist said. 

Stopped Arnab from handing medicines to his parents-in-law, says Republic TV

Following the arrest, the Republic TV released a statement saying that that at 7:45am on Wednesday, Republic Media Network’s Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami house was encircled, his home was barged into, cameras forcefully turned off, he was physically assaulted and dragged out of his home in a police van.

“In a black day of India’s democracy, the Editor-in-Chief of the number 1 news network of India was dragged by his hair and arrested. Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh’s cops shut off cameras, and thrashed Arnab. They stopped Arnab from handing medicines to his parents-in-law, and even physically assaulted his son. Reportedly, encounter cop Sachin Vaze threatened Arnab saying, “You don’t know what I am capable of”. In its statement, the Republic TV said that the Mumbai Police in brazen disregard for all due process, integrity and any semblance of fair investigation, dragged Arnab Goswami by the collar to a crime branch unit police and physically attacked him inside his him.

The statement further read, “It is terrifying that the Mumbai Police and the state of Maharashtra are unapologetic and unhinged in misusing their office and uniform to undertake a physical attack, and open criminal intimidation even before the cameras against a citizen of India. Moreover the attack on the Fourth Estate without evidence or verifiable facts, on the basis of a closed case being reopened with the sole aim to make an unwarranted arrest of Arnab Goswami is shocking and one that all of  India stands against.”

Republic TV chief Arnab Goswami arrested

Continuing their witch-hunt against Republic TV chief, the Mumbai Police on Wednesday arrested Arnab Goswami. The Mumbai Police reached Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami’s residence on Wednesday and physically manhandled him as they tried to detain him in a 2018 abetment to suicide case that was already closed.

A team of Mumbai Police arrested Republic TV chief Arnab Goswami after they physically assaulted and dragged him by grabbing his hair.

In a shocking act, a large contingent of Mumbai Police was seen present at Goswami’s residence on Wednesday morning. In the below video, it can be seen how officials of the Mumbai Police were manhandling the Republic TV chief.

The Mumbai Police has not produced any documents, summons or court papers as they reached Arnab Goswami’s residence as they tried to arrest him. The Mumbai Police team also blocked Republic Media Network’s reporters from entering Arnab’s residence and have sealed all entry and exit points.

In May 2018, an FIR was filed against Arnab Goswami in an alleged abetment to suicide case. An interior Designer had committed suicide in his bungalow in Alibaug. In a suicide note, Anvay Naik claimed Goswami and the other two persons—Feroz Shaikh and Niteish Sarda—owed him a total of Rs 5.4 crore. However, Goswami was investigated and case was closed by court after a closure report was filed by the Police. You could read about the case in detail here.
