Prime Minister Narendra Modi distributes over 70,000 appointment letters at the seventh Rozgar Mela

On Saturday, July 22, Prime Minister Narendra Modi distributed over 70,000 job appointment letters to newly-inducted recruits. PM Modi also addressed the Rozgar Mela via video conferencing. The Rozgar Mela was held at 44 locations across the country.

In his address to the seventh Rozgar Mela, PM Modi said that it is inspiring that the new recruits are getting their appointment letters today (July 22) as on the same day in 1947, the national flag was adopted in the constituent Assembly.

“The Constituent Assembly adopted the national flag on July 22, 1947. New recruits are receiving joining letters on this historic day. This is an inspiration,” PM Modi said adding that the next 25 years are of paramount importance for India.

PM Modi slammed the previous Congress-led government, saying that the banking sector was destroyed during their tenure.

“Today, India is regarded as having one of the strongest banking sectors, but this was not the case nine years ago. During the previous government, our banking sector saw huge destruction. We can now do digital transactions, yet phone banking was not available to 140 crore people nine years ago. People close to a specific family used to phone banks and request loans worth thousands of crores, which were never returned. The ‘phone banking scam’ was one of the biggest during the previous government,” PM Modi remarked.

Notably,  the new recruits, selected from across the country will be joining the Government in various Ministries /Departments including the Department of Revenue, Department of Financial Services, Department of Posts, Department of School Education, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Central Public Sector Undertakings, Department of Water resources, Department of Personnel & Training and Ministry of Home Affairs, among others.

In May this year, PM Modi distributed 71,000 appointment letters to the new recruits at Rozgar Mela, which were held at 45 locations across the country. In the last eight months, Prime Minister Modi distributed joining letters to over 4 lakh 33 thousand recruits at six Rozgar Melas.

About Rozgar Mela

On October 22, 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the first phase of the Rozgar Mela on the auspicious day of Dharteras. The campaign aimed to provide 10 lakh government jobs. Since its launch, multiple Rozgar Melas have been organised in Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra and other states. The government also launched a particular Karmaogi Prarambh module for online orientation courses for all new appointments in January 2023 when PM Modi handed over 71,000 appointment letters to the new recruits.

Love Jihad, political exploitation, social stigma, and ethical dilemma – ‘Ajmer 92’ is a gripping and gut-wrenching story of the 1992 serial gangrape

Mainstream Bollywood, which is largely synonymous with plain and sometimes mindless entertainment, is witnessing a big change. A spate of movies like The Kashmir Files and The Kerala Story, inspired by real-life incidents, has garnered public support and generated societal reactions. ‘Ajmer 92’ is one such impactful, and gripping film about a story that was left untold for decades.

The true story behind Ajmer 92

In 1992, the small town of Ajmer in Rajasthan woke up to a shameful, sordid scandal. The scandal involved hundreds of young girls, some college students while some others were still in school. The news of the scandal broke after a local paper, ‘Navjyoti’ published some nude images and a story that spoke about school students being blackmailed by local gangs.

It all started with Farooq Chishti grooming a female student of Sophia Senior Secondary School and raping her. He took objectionable photographs of the minor and threatened her to introduce other girls to him. Later, those girls were raped and blackmailed as well.

Farooq Chishti was the president of the Ajmer Youth Congress while two other accused, Nafis Chishti and Anwar Chishti were the vice-president and joint secretary respectively of the city Congress unit. In this case, some of the accused were the Chishti Khadims (caretakers) of the Ajmer Dargah.

Further investigations led to 18 men in total being charged in the case and tensions ran high in the town for several days. Most of the accused were Muslims, many from the families of Khadims, and most victims were young Hindu girls.

What followed next was another saga of political influence and administrative incompetence. There are speculations that the matter was suppressed to the point that many witnesses and victims turned hostile, and many details got buried. The witnesses and victims were threatened and blackmailed as well to stop them from coming forward. Some of them turned hostile due to social stigma.

Ajmer 92 film

The much-awaited movie Ajmer 92, based on this true story of serial gangrape and blackmail of at least 250 girls, hit the theatres on 21st July. The film is directed by Pushpendra Singh and produced by Reliance Entertainment in collaboration with U&K Films Entertainment, Sumit Motion Pictures, and Little Crew Pictures. It stars veteran actors Manoj Joshi, Shivaji Shinde, Brijendra Kala, Rajesh Sharma, Alka Amin, Zarina Wahab, and Shalini Kapoor. Karan Verma makes his debut as the lead in the movie and starring alongside him is Sumit Singh.

The powerful opening scene shows a fort in the backdrop of a few minarets of a mosque. Just as the camera captures a 180-degree bird’s eye view of Ajmer, home to the Dargah of Moinuddin Chishti, echoes of a girl’s horrific cry darken the city’s blue skies. The very first scene conveys the crux of the story. What follows is the story of the heinous crime of gang rape and blackmail, the rivalry between two local journalists, and the ever-impending quest to seek justice.

The movie has also briefly shed light on love jihad and how it is weaponised by Islamists to trap Hindu girls often to the extent of no return. It was refreshing to see an Indian movie openly talk about the issue of love jihad, albeit with censorship, and not give in to the fear of criticism from an appeasement-loving ecosystem. Plus points to Pushpendra Singh for daring to give this unspoken subject a platform. Another hard-to-ignore touch-up to the movie is the repeated namaskar (greeting by joining of hands) done by the antagonist Yaqub Ansari with the words (asalaam-walekum), safe to say, basically symbolizing the Congress party.

Exposing the jihadi mob mentality is a scene wherein a Muslim mob marches down the street in protest against the local newspaper, Navkiran (originally Dainik Navjyoti) for publishing about the scandal. A mobster holds the Editor-in-Chief by his collar and says to him, “Tum log humari kaum ko badnaam kyon karna chahte ho?” (why do you want to malign our (Muslim) community?), reflecting everything that is wrong with those who, instead of questioning criminal mentality, support it for the cause of “brotherhood” and shoot the messenger instead.

‘Ajmer 92’ very well shows what it means to be a girl and parents to a girl in a society which is reluctant to speak the truth and stand by the victims for the fear of offending a certain community and for the fear of communal riots. Manoj Joshi, playing a state politician in power, suggests ensuring that a Hindu is also named accused in the case so as to avoid giving the accused, Yaqub Ansari (role of the real Farooq Chishti played by Mahesh Balraj), the chance to turn this into a Hindu-Muslim case.

The moving helplessness of a father is seen when SP Ranjeet (played by Rajesh Sharma) is forced to remain silent fearing for the future of his daughter. In a subsequent scene, he decides to seek justice and is joined by his daughter in the quest for the same.

Another rather commendable and somewhat hidden message ‘Ajmer 92’ gives is how the Hindu community divided on caste lines, even with its strong foundational values, is still a weak one especially when living amongst criminal-minded radicals and fundamentalists. This message is reflected when Madhav conveys to his father (Brijendra Kala) his intent to marry Geeta, the daughter of a senior cop, and his reluctant father replies by saying, “Woh Rajput hain aur hum Yadav.” Even as the father agrees to the union, he refuses as a father of the boy to pay a visit to the girl’s family and demands that the latter visit them.

Out of all the aspects, the strongest was the movie’s portrayal of two different kinds of journalism. On one hand, there is Mohan Singh (role of Madan Singh played by Aakash Dahiya) who runs a local printing press and is known for publishing sensational news filled with “masala”. The real Madan Singh ran a local tabloid called ‘Lehron Ki Barkha’ (titled ‘Toofan’ in the movie). He had been blackmailing many girls demanding money, threatening to release their pictures. Most of the girls had given in, while one victim, Pushpa Dhanwani, had come forward and lodged an FIR against him.

Madan Singh was assassinated in 1992 in his hospital bed while recovering from an injury he sustained from a previous attack. His sons avenged his murder in January this year. The movie has got its facts spot on in regard to Madan Singh’s role in the case.

Director Pushpendra Singh has aptly pitted the role of Madhav; an honest scribe searching for the truth while respecting the sensitivities associated with the dignity of the rape victims; against that of Manoj, a journalist looking to profit from the pictures of the rape victims pushing them into an unending cycle of abuse and torture. The altercations between Madhav and Manoj raise important questions on the ethics of journalism and to what extent can and should one go to bring such a story to the people.

The last scene of Ajmer 92 is gut-wrenching. Yaqub Ansari receives a call from his brothers who are in hiding. Ansari, who was sentenced to life in a mental asylum, is shown sitting in a comfortable abode telling his brothers, “Don’t worry. Burn them all (witnesses).” This is even as the survivors are abandoned to their fate forever awaiting justice. The status quo continues to date.

Mumbai police arrest one Abdul Rahman Hasanur from WB for extorting money using morphed pictures, was working under Bangladeshi handlers

A 31-year-old man from West Bengal was arrested by LT Marg police in Mumbai for allegedly morphing a picture of a woman from south Mumbai and extorting money from her husband. The accused has been identified as Abdul Rahman Hasanur Mandal, who resides in the West Bengal area of North 24 Parganas.

The police said that the person who was detained was involved in an international extortion ring since his task was to collect the money in his bank account and then transfer it in cash to his Bangladeshi accomplice. He runs a money transfer business in the village, which is close to the Indo-Bangladesh border.

In May this year, a Kalbadevi-based couple approached the police, stating that the husband received a photograph on WhatsApp with his wife’s face attached to a naked body. Following this, the complainant received a WhatsApp call in which a man threatened that he will send the morphed photo to everyone on his contact list, including their daughter’s friends unless he paid him Rs 14,000. According to the police, the number from which they received the text and call began with +88 which is Bangladesh’s country code and was a 13-digit mobile number.

Accused Abdul Rahman sent a UPI id to the complainant over WhatsApp and asked him to send the money immediately. The police said that the complainant had downloaded a Chinese application this year following which the data on his phone was compromised.

Since the man was concerned that the accused would continue to demand money if they fulfilled their demand once, they approached the police and filed a complaint, a police officer said. On the basis of the complainant lodged by the couple, the LT Marg police registered a case under Indian Penal Code sections 354 (outraging a woman’s modesty), 354 (A) (sexual harassment), 385 (extortion), and 506 (criminal intimidation), as well as sections 66 (C), 66 (D), and 67 (A) of the Information Technology Act.

The police analysed the call data records of the phone number and the bank transaction records of the UPI ID sent to the man. Based on the information thus obtained, the police were able to trace the suspect at Bangaon in North 24 Parganas district in West Bengal, an area near the Bangladesh border. Police laid a trap and managed to arrest Abdul Rahman Hasanur Mandal. He was then brought to Mumbai on a transit remand.

During the probe, Abdul Rahman Hasanur Mandal said that he is involved in the crime for the last six months. He works on the basis of instructions received from handlers in Bangladesh and uses his bank account and UPI ID to route the money earned through extortion. He used to collect the money through UPI, then withdraw the cash and hand it over to Bangladeshi handlers on the border, keeping his commission.

According to the authorities, they are currently investigating his five bank accounts and nine UPI IDs that he made for extortion purposes. The police seized a SIM card and a mobile phone from Abdul Rahman’s possession. The police suspect that this nexus may have used similar methods to dupe several other women as well.

The Plight of Bangladeshi Hindus: A Growing Concern

This alarming incident highlights the growing plight of Bangladeshi Hindus, who represent a religious minority in the country. Attacks on temples, perpetrated by certain radical elements, have been witnessing an unfortunate increase in recent times. Such attacks not only inflict damage on places of worship but also create an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among the Hindu community.

This is not the first time that such an incident has come to light. On 23rd January 2023, an Islamist named Akram vandalised several idols of Goddess Saraswati in Purbadhala Bazaar in the Netrakona district in the Mymensingh Division of Bangladesh. On 26th January 2023, a group of 9-10 Islamists disrupted the Saraswati Puja and vandalised the idol of the Goddess after being told not to click pictures and videos. The Bangladesh National Hindu Grand Alliance informed that a total of 154 religious minorities, including Hindus, were killed in the country between January and December 2022.

CBSE writes to affiliated schools on the medium of instruction and multilingual education, emphasises the importance of using the mother tongue

On Friday, 21st July 2023, Dr Joseph Emmanuel, the Director (Academics) of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) New Delhi, wrote a letter to all the CBSE affiliated schools regarding the medium of instruction and the importance of using the mother tongue. The letter emphasised the value of multilingual education and its positive impact on linguistic diversity, cultural understanding, and academic success among students.

The letter said, “Multilingual education has been widely recognised as a valuable approach to fostering linguistic diversity, cultural understanding, and academic success among students. The National Education Policy 2020, in paragraph 4.12, emphasises the significant cognitive advantages of multilingualism for young learners, particularly when they are exposed to multiple languages from the foundational stage, with a specific focus on their mother tongue. The policy strongly advocates for utilizing the home language, mother tongue, local language, or regional language as the medium of instruction whenever feasible, at least until Grade 5, but preferably extending till Grade 8 and beyond.”

It further said, “The implementation of multilingual education and the utilisation of the mother tongue as a medium of instruction presents several challenges including the availability of skilled teachers capable of teaching in multilingual settings, the creation of high-quality multilingual textbooks, and the limited time available, especially in two-shift government schools, as multilingual education demands additional instructional time allocation.”

CBSE remarked that, in view of the above challenges, the Ministry of Education, Government of India, has taken several measures to promote education through Indian languages as the medium of instruction. One significant step is the direction to the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) for preparing new textbooks through 22 scheduled Indian languages, making them available to all students from the next academic sessions.

The letter added that higher education has also started adapting to this need by producing textbooks in Indian languages and initiating the learning-teaching process through Indian language mediums, alongside English mediums. Even examinations in technical education, medical education, vocational education, skill education, law education, etc., are now conducted in Indian languages.

Highlighting the importance of continuity, the letter mentioned that since higher education is responding to this need, school education must become its foundation. Therefore, schools affiliated with CBSE need to play a vital role in promoting education through Indian languages.

Concluding the letter, the Director (Academics) mentioned, “In view of the above initiatives taken to facilitate education through Indian languages, the CBSE affiliated schools may consider using Indian languages, as enumerated in the Schedule 8 of the Indian Constitution, as the medium of Instruction from Foundational Stage till the end of Secondary Stage i.e. from pre-primary classes till class XII as an optional medium in addition to other existing options. Schools may explore the available resources, consult with experts in the field, and collaborate with other schools to share best practices to make multilingual education in CBSE schools a reality.”

Meanwhile, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan lauded the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for encouraging its affiliated schools to use Indian languages (mother tongue) as a medium of instruction and adapting multilingual education adhering to the vision of National Education Policy, 2020.

Minister Pradhan tweeted, “Well done CBSE. This is a laudatory step towards encouraging education in the mother tongue and Indian languages in schools. NEP in action.”

Rock Band ‘The 1975’ banned from Malaysia after criticism of anti-LGBT laws and an on-stage kiss between members Matty Healy and Ross MacDonald

The English pop rock band ‘The 1975’ was banned from continuing its performance at a Malaysian music festival on Friday (July 21) night when vocalist Matty Healy kissed a male bandmate onstage and denounced the nation’s anti-LGBTQ policies. Malaysia is a Muslim-dominated conservative country where homosexuality is considered a crime and punishable by 20 years in jail.

The incident happened while the band was performing at the Good Vibes Festival in Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur on Friday, July 21.

Before kissing bassist Ross MacDonald, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, Matty Healy made a protracted attack on the nation’s anti-LGBT policies during the performance, as can be viewed in a fan-shot video shared on Twitter by user @aphexmaxim.

“I made a mistake. When we were booking shows, I wasn’t looking into it,” Healy told the crowd Friday at the Good Vibes Festival. “I don’t see the f***ing point, right, I do not see the point of inviting the 1975 to a country and then telling us who we can have sex with.

“I’m sorry if that offends you, and you’re religious, ”he said, adding that he believes the Malaysian government is in the wrong. I don’t care anymore. If you push, I’m gonna push back. I’m not in the f****ing mood.”

The vocalist continued, “Unfortunately you don’t get a set of loads of uplifting songs because I’m f***ing furious. And that’s not fair on you, because you’re not representative of your government. Because you’re young people, and I’m sure a lot of you are gay and progressive and cool,” he said.

Healy went on to say that the British band had initially decided not to perform their Thursday headline festival slot.

“I pulled this show yesterday and we had a conversation, we said, ‘You know what, we can’t let the kids down because they’re not the government.’ But I’ve done this before,” he said, referring to a 2019 incident in Dubai.

“I’ve gone to a country where it’s f***ing ridiculous, it’s f***ing ridiculous to tell people what they can do with that (points to crotch) and that (points to mouth). And if you want to invite me here to do a show, you can f*** off. I’ll take your money, you can ban me, but I’ve done this before and it doesn’t feel good. And I’m f***ed off,” he ended the monologue.

Ross MacDonald, the band’s 34-year-old bassist, then approached Healy and gave him a long kiss as their 2018 song “I Like America & America Likes Me” played. After finishing the song, they performed another before Healy said that the group had to leave since they had “just gotten banned from Kuala Lumpur.” The English pop band then left the stage.

After the show was cut short, the organisers, Good Vibes Festival, issued an official statement stating that it regretted that the set was cut short due to “non-compliance with local performance guidelines”.

Good Vibes Festival has always been dedicated to providing enjoyable music experiences, and we sincerely appreciate your continued support,” they added. “Good Vibes Festival 2023 will proceed as scheduled, and we eagerly anticipate your presence on Saturday and Sunday.”

The festival added: “To those who attended on Friday, July 21, 2023, we understand your disappointment. If you have a Friday single-day festival wristband, you will now be able to attend the festival on either Saturday or Sunday – simply present your Friday single-day wristband at the main entrance for entry. We hope to see you soon.”

Malaysia is home to 32 million people and ethnic Malay Muslims make up more than 60% of the population. It has a dual-track legal system, with Islamic criminal and family laws applicable to Muslims running alongside civil laws. Though constitutionally Malaysia is defined as a secular state, the laws of the country are extremely Islamic in nature.

Last year, a woman in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was charged with ‘insulting Islam’ by allegedly “acting indecently” while performing at a comedy club. The woman was accused of committing the offence of ‘insulting Islam’ by stripping to show herself in a short dress at the Taman Tun Dr Ismail comedy club.

Similarly, Malaysian writer Uthaya Sankar was arrested over a Facebook post that allegedly insulted Prophet Muhammad. In his post, Sankar had allegedly written about the issue of polygamy and the Prophet Muhammad, which was alleged to be insulting to Islam.

The demolition took place early morning wherein one of the boundary walls was removed. Officials said that an illegal structure made out of concrete was raised a few months back on the encroached portion. However, the mosque officials alleged that no prior notice was sent to them before taking up the exercise.

Hanuman Mandir and Dargah demolished in Delhi earlier in July

On Sunday, 2nd July 2023, the Delhi administration demolished two religious places on the footpath in the Bhajanpura area to widen a road. Public Works Department (PWD) initiated the anti-encroachment drive in the Bhajanpura area of North East Delhi. The purpose of this operation was to remove a Hanuman temple and a dargah.

To ensure the smooth execution of the drive and handle any potential disturbances, Delhi Police personnel were heavily deployed, along with the presence of central forces. Additionally, the entire area was carefully monitored using drone cameras.

“The women belonged to socially marginalised community and had a frenzied mob baying for her blood…It had all the making of a tragedy that should have ‘broken’ Mamata Banerjee’s heart and she, instead of merely outraging, could have acted, since she is also the Home Minister of Bengal…” Malviya further informed.

“But she chose to do nothing. Neither did she condemn the barbarity nor did she express pain and anguish because it would have exposed her own failing as a Chief Minister. But a day after, she shed copious tears and screamed blue murder, because it was politically expedient…” he added.

Screengrab of the tweet by Prem Shukla

According to BJP leader Prem Shukla, the victims belonged to the Dalit community. In a tweet, he said, “Two Dalit women were striped naked by locals at Pakurhat under Bamangola PS, Malda, West Bengal in front of @WBPolice. @MamataOfficial, please take steps.”
