Uttar Pradesh: Shots fired at lawyer who had filed petition against illegal mosque, Atiq Ahmad gang suspected of involvement

On Sunday 9th August in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, some miscreants fired shots at Abhishek Shukla, a lawyer Allahabad High Court and joint secretary of the Bar Association. He narrowly survived the attack. As per the reports, he was assaulted and looted as well. Shukla was admitted in SRN hospital for treatment of the injuries. As per the doctors, his condition is stable, and he is out of danger.

The incident took place at Jagriti crossroad in Rajrooppur area. On learning about the incident, the advocates reached the spot and encircled the police post in the area. There are reports of arguments between the policemen and the angry advocates. They demanded the arrest of the accused and warned that they will start protests if the police do not take immediate action.

Atiq Ahmad gang might be behind the attack

As per reports, it is being said that Prayagraj city’s Atiq Ahmad gang is behind the shooting. However, SSP Abhishek Dixit said that it had not been confirmed yet. The police have registered a case based on the information they got and search operation is on to find the accused.

How did the incident happen?

Abhishek Shukla, who lives at his Nimsarai residence, was standing with his colleagues near Jagriti crossroad in Rajarooppur at around 9:15 PM on Sunday. Four miscreants arrived there on the bike and fired at him. He narrowly escaped the firing, and after that, the attackers started assaulting him. They looted his gold chain and locket. Some people ran to save Shukla. The attackers escaped on seeing the crowd approaching them.

ADG Prem Prakash said that the miscreants opened fire at advocate Abhishek Shukla, but he escaped narrowly. He was beaten up and looted by the attackers.

News clipping on the attack

Shukla had filed a petition against illegal mosque at HC premises

The Hindu Legal Council has released a press statement in which they said that Abhishek suffered three shots on his hands and feet. It added that Shukla had filed a petition against the construction of an illegal mosque in Allahbad High Court premises. The case is currently pending in the Supreme Court. Though it is not confirmed yet, the statement has alleged that his petition against the mosque may have been the reason behind the attack as he was in the crosshairs of many radical elements.

Not satire: Shashi Tharoor and Barkha Dutt hold a serious discussion over PM Modi’s “communal” beard

This is a serious discussion between senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor and a senior journalist Barkha Dutt about the beard grown by Prime Minister Modi. And in all seriousness the duo are discussing the length of his beard and how it looks ‘communal’.

Towards the end of the rant at around 5 minute 42 seconds, Tharoor says that once if the court has taken a decision that a temple can come up, of course it should come up but his objection is on the sitting prime minister carrying out the Bhoomi Pujan. He adds he wouldn’t have had issues if the Bhoomi Pujan was carried out by ‘appropriate religious authorities’. He claims PM Modi doing the Bhoomi Pujan is appropriation of religious imagery and the conflation of the religious and political.

“Mr Modi allows his beard to grow. Ever since the judgement you’ve noticed he is not trimming his beard. It is getting longer and longer. He is coming there looking like some sort of Rishi Raj like state king in saffron robes,” he says. Barkha Dutt intervenes that how imagery is all part of politics. “Your persona, your signalling, your messaging, it is part of it,” she says. To this Tharoor says that PM Modi wears every type of headgear presented to him “except the Muslim skull cap,” he adds.

When Dutt asked him what his problem with the beard, he says the beard is all about giving the ‘Rishi Raj’ appearance. “Beard was done to give this ‘Rishi Raj’ appearance about the holy man who is also the king. The sage who is also the warrior. That is the image that is being conveyed,” he said.

Tharoor, apparently, is not the only one to have a problem with PM Modi’s beard. ‘Liberals’ and Islamists alike have also expressed their concerns over his beard.

ThePrint and The Wire columnist referred to the beard as a symbol of ‘Hindu militancy’. Similarly, former JNU student activist-turned politician-turned activist Shehla Rashid thought his beard is like that of Ertugrul, the lead character of Turkish drama series which the Pakistanis and Rana Ayyub have been bingewatching and going ga-ga over.

Journalist Hartosh Singh Bal was also quite fixated on the beard.

One Islamist also thought PM Modi with his beard is establishing a caliphate.

It is 2020 and we’re in middle of pandemic that originated in China but for some, beards are communal.

Shashi Tharoor clings to hope citing a Congress supporter’s poll on Twitter, which was won by his boss Rahul Gandhi

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, who has been posting some ludicrous tweets of late, today quoted a tweet of a Twitter user who had run a poll on who would win the elections if they were to be conducted today. The poll result showed that 53 per cent of the respondents preferred Congress over the BJP.

Tharoor quoted the tweet and asserted that the poll, which was responded by a paltry 7,764 voters of the 17.3 million Twitter India users was a more accurate representative sample than the 12,151 out of the 1.2 billion people, which was the basis of the India Today’s survey.

The India Today survey had revealed that about a resounding 78 per cent of respondents found the performance of PM Modi to be outstanding/good.

Titled as ‘Mood of the Nation survey’, the poll also found out that 66 per cent of the respondents believed that PM Modi should be the next PM of India while the Gandhi scion Rahul Gandhi could rack up only 8 per cent of favourable votes in the favour of his candidature for the post of Prime Minister.

However, the soaring popularity of PM Modi and the declining credibility of Rahul Gandhi, as depicted in the India Today survey, came as a rude awakening for the Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who was quick to dismiss the India Today’s elaborate survey determining the mood of the nation by leaning on an unreliable Twitter poll organised by a Congress supporting individual and not an independent entity.

According to Shashi Tharoor, the poll ran by a Congress supporting person, who self-identifies as a journalist* (please see update at the end of the article), with approximately 18,000 followers on Twitter, which could manage to accumulate only 7,700 votes and was likely prone to rigging by Congress IT cell members, was more credible than the survey ran by an independent media organisation, just because it painted a rosier picture of the Congress party than the reality and projected Rahul Gandhi as the victorious, at least in one online poll.

This is not an aberration where Tharoor seems to have taken a leave of his good senses. If one has a cursory glance at the tweets posted by him in the last few days, it will be amply clear that Tharoor has been mouthing off inanities, especially after the Bhoomi Pujan ceremony of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

A day after PM Modi participated in the ground-laying ceremony of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya and placed the ceremonial cornerstone to officially mark the construction of the Ram Mandir, Shashi Tharoor had an extended meltdown, posting a series of tweets, denouncing BJP for supposedly “hijacking” Lord Ram’s name. Tharoor appeared in a damage-control mode, as he tried to salvage declining fortunes of the Congress party, which had once questioned the existence of Lord Ram, by extolling the virtues that Lord Ram symbolised.

PM Modi’s presence at the Bhoomi Pujan ceremony of the Ram Mandir rattled Tharoor so much so that he cited trivial matters to attack PM Modi. In his speech during the Bhoomi Pujan ceremony, PM Modi had addressed the people of the country as “1.3 billion Indians”. However, Tharoor cavilled at PM Modi’s speech, tweeting that the population of India is 1.38 billion and that the omission of 8 crore people from the Prime Minister was worrisome.

Furthermore, the artistic rendition of PM Modi holding the hand of Lord Ram and taking him towards the Ram Mandir drew the ire of many opposition politicians, including Shashi Tharoor, who tweeted a Hindi limerick to slam the BJP for showing PM Modi’s stature bigger than Lord Ram. However, it was conspicuously lost on Tharoor that the Ram Mandir was a temple to Ram Lalla and it would be entirely logical that Lord Ram has a diminutive stature.

Shashi Tharoor’s recent inanities are reminiscent of a former Congress member, who was recently shown the door, apparently for insubordination and lack of discipline. Sanjay Jha, who was dismissed last month for his critical views on the Congress party, has long been the object of scorn and derision for his utterly preposterous tweets and foolish presumptions.

With Sanjay Jha ceasing to be the unofficial jester of the Congress party, it appears that Tharoor, perhaps, has taken it upon himself to fill the void in the absence of his former colleague and continue the responsibility of amusing the netizens with what was once Jha’s forte. As Congress continues to stare at political oblivion, and Rahul Gandhi doing little to salvage its declining fortunes, Tharoor seems to have assumed the new role of tickling the funny bones of social media users, even if that means peddling ludicrous inanities.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor’s inordinately silly tweets not only serve to amuse the party opponents and possibly embarass his supporters, but they also highlight the steady deterioration of the intellectual capacity of a leader who was once considered as one of the most erudite Congress leaders to a one resorting to fatuity and absurdity to mount an attack against the opposition. In fact, the India Today’s poll result is nothing but the reflection of this progressive and irreversible degeneration of the Congress party.

Update* – The Twitter user Ranvijay, after initial publication of this report, objected to himself being portrayed as a ‘Congress functionary’ and insisted that he was a journalist. The copy was updated to respect his whims. However, with passage of time and more losses by Rahul Gandhi in elections, Ranvijay became a more and more outspoken supporter of the party. Latest incident (see tweets below) in January 2025 shows that Ranvijay, whom Shashi Tharoor tried to pass off as an independent journalist, was likely to be actively collaborating with Congress IT cell. However, Ranvijay is not a Congress functionary, yet, in official capacity.

Pilot flies back to home turf? After weeks of political drama, Sachin Pilot says Ashok Gehlot is his leader

The political turmoil in Rajasthan appears to have to an end with senior leader of the Congress party, Sachin Pilot, bending the knee before the Chief Minister of the state Ashok Gehlot. As per reports, the suspended Deputy CM has accepted Gehlot as his leader.

The Congress party had said in a statement earlier, “Sachin Pilot has met former Congress president Rahul Gandhi and expressed his grievances in detail. They have had a frank, open and conclusive discussion. Sachin Pilot has committed to working in the interest of the Congress party and the Congress government in Rajasthan.”

The statement also said that the All India Congress Committee (AICC) will constitute a three-member committee to address the grievances raised by the MLAs supporting Sachin Pilot and the disgruntled leader himself.

Bhanwar Lal Sharma, an important Congress rebel, met Ashok Gehlot on Monday and said that the “party is like a family and Ashok Gehlot is its head.” “There was no camp, nobody was a captive. Bhanwar Lal can never be a captive. I went there willingly, I have come here willingly,” Sharma said.

“I met him. Party is like a family and Ashok Gehlot is its head. If someone gets upset in a family then they don’t take food. So I expressed my unhappiness for a month. Now I don’t have any resentment anymore. Party will fulfill all the promises made to people,” he added.

Recently, Ashok Gehlot had lashed out at Sachin Pilot and called him “nikamma and nakaara (useless)”. “Rajasthan is the only state in the country where no demands were raised from any quarter to change the pradesh Congress committee president in the last seven years. We knew that no work is happening. We knew he is nikamma and nakaara (useless). We still didn’t question him keeping the party interest in mind,” Gehlot told the media.

Gehlot had also claimed that he was not in ‘talking terms’ with the Deputy Chief Minister of the state Sachin Pilot. He stated that Pilot was just playing the victim card over Special Operation Group (SOG) notice to him. On July 14, the Congress party had sacked the young Turk as Rajasthan state Congress chief and removed him from the post of Deputy Chief Minister of the state. The party had alleged that the leader had gone rogue and had conspired with BJP to destabilise the government in Rajasthan.

‘Hardly anyone guessed that the cosmos might be far older but the Hindus did,’ American astronomer Carl Sagan was fascinated by the Hindu view of the Cosmos

0

Carl Sagan (1934-1996), a renowned American astrophysicist, astronomer and astrobiologist admired the Hindu view of the cosmos. In an undated video, he explained how the ancient cosmological ideas that were central to Hinduism form the basis of modern cosmology. At the very onset, Carl cited the ancient Hindu sacred text of Rigveda and conceded, “The most sophisticated cosmological ideas came from Asia and particularly from India. Here, there is a tradition of sceptical questioning and unselfconscious humility before the great cosmic mysteries.”

American astronomer explains Hindu cosmology

“Most cultures imagine the world to be a few hundred human generations old. Hardly anyone guessed that the cosmos might be far older but the ancient Hindus did,” Carl stated. He then talked about the harvest festival of Pongal which is celebrated in South India and especially in Tamil Nadu. Carl emphasised that the Hindu festival had ties with an ‘elegant and much deeper cosmological tradition’ and that it rejoiced the cycles in nature.

The American astronomer further stated, “The Hindu religion is one of the world’s great Faiths dedicated to the idea that the cosmos itself undergoes an immense number of deaths and rebirths. It is the only religion in which the time skills correspond no doubt ‘by accident’ to those of modern scientific cosmology. The cycles run from our ordinary day and night to a day and night of Brahma – 8.64 billion years long. It is longer than the age of the Earth, the Sun, and half the time since Bing Bang.”

The American astronomer then highlighted the Hindu belief that the universe is the dream of God who dissolves Himself, in dreamless sleep, and the universe after 100 Brahma years. “This is until another Brahma century that He stirs, recomposes and begins again to dream the great cosmic Lotus dream.”

Carl Sagan explains the significance of the ‘Cosmic dance of Shiva’

Following his visit to an ancient Chola temple in Dharasuram, Carl Sagan explained the significance of a bronze-cast Nataraj idol. He stated that the idol represented the beginning of each cosmic cycle. The American astronomer then pointed to the motif, known as Cosmic dance of Shiva, and said, “The God has four hands. In the upper right hand is a drum whose sound is the sound of creation. In the upper left hand, there is a tongue of flame – a reminder that the universe now newly created will billions of years from now be utterly destroyed.”

He conceded that the ‘lovely’ cosmic ideas were central to ancient Hindu beliefs. “They are kind of premonition of modern astronomical ideas,” Carl Sagan reiterated. “Do we live in a universe that expands forever or in one where there is a nested set of infinite cycles? There is a way to find out the answer to this question not through mysticism but through science – by making an accurate census of the total amount of matter in the universe or by seeing to the very edge of the cosmos,” he concluded.

Rajasthan battles policemen suicides: 6 suicides in 2 months, most recent being that of constable Yogindra Singh

0

The number of suicide cases of policemen in Rajasthan has been on the rise. The recent suicide of a 29-year-old police constable Yogindra Singh reported on August 9, is the sixth such case reported in the last two months. The young police constable allegedly died of suicide in Sikar’s Dhod police area by growing himself in a water tank on Sunday morning, reports Times of India.

According to media reports, Constable Yogindra Singh was missing from his room. The family members of the constable, who was said to be suffering from clinical depression and was undergoing treatment for the same, started searching for him, after they realised that he had gone missing from his room. They later found Singh in the water tank within theor home’s premises.

The family members, thereafter informed the police at around 6:30 AM. The police immediately reached the spot and Yogindra Singh was rushed to the hospital. The hospital authorities declared the yound constable brought dead.

Amit Kumar, the SHO of Dhod police staion confirmed that the constable was on leave for the last 6-7 months and was apparently undergoing treatment for depression.

The deceased constable who was posted in Bhankrota police station before he went on a leave was in the force for the last six years. Yogendra Singh, who had three siblings, with one of them serving in the Border Security Force (BSF), was engaged and was to get married soon.

Six policemen in Rajasthan died of suicide in the last 2 months

Significantly, Yogindra Singh’s suicide is the sixth such case in Rajasthan in the recent past. Prior to this, five other police officers in Rajasthan, died of suicide, in the last two months.

On July 4, a police constable named Premchand allegedly committed suicide in Rajasthan’s Tonk district. According to reports, the constable’s body was found hanging from a tree inside the court complex in Tonk district of the state.

Prior to this, there were reports that a constable allegedly committed suicide on May 31, by hanging himself in a room where he was staying in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district. As per reports, Mayaram Meena was absent from duty at a power grid on Sunday. When his room in Pokhran area was checked in the evening, he was found hanging.

On the same day, reports emerged that a Jaipur district police jawan, named Suresh Yadav, had allegedly hanged himself near the water tank of the police line.

Previously, on May 29, another police head constable, from Santhal police station had reportedly killed himself by hanging from the fan. A high-level inquiry was launched in the case.

However, the series of such cases started with the sudden death of Rajgarh Police Station’s SHO Vishnu Dutt Vishnoi, who committed suicide by hanging himself on May 23. The demand for a CBI probe into the suicide of Churu’s Rajgarh SHO Vishnudutt Vishnoi has gained political momentum.

The Vishnudutt Vishnoi suicide case was handed over to the CBI after Rajasthan Congress government was pressurised from all quarters.

It has been alleged that the SHO was under pressure from Congress MLA Krishna Poonia, which led to his suicide.

The international links of Indian Communists: How India’s communists betrayed the nation

The Communist Party of India is one of the most controversial political parties in the country. Founded in 1925, CPI is alleged to have been directly involved in several anti-national activities since its inception.

Though misleading articles from leftist sources claim CPI fought for India’s independence from the British rule, the truth cannot be further away from this claim.

Let’s take a look at the shameless history of the Communist party

The Communists called Subash Chandra Bose a ‘dog of Japanese General Tojo’

During the Second World War, when freedom fighter Subash Chandra Bose was attempting to build an international alliance to counter the British empire with a pursuit to free India of British rule, the mouthpiece of the undivided CPI ‘People’s War’ published sketches of Subash Chandra Bose being led by General Tojo by holding his hand. Another illustration from the same magazine showed Bose being thrown in a circus by a man donning the Nazi Hakenkreuz.

This was because the USSR was fighting against Germany and Japan at two fronts while Bose lobbied with the two countries to overthrow the British from India. CPI had compromised its integrity to lick the boots of the Soviets, from whom they allegedly received funds even after India’s independence according to former KGB agent Mitrokhin’s Archives.

Ordered party cadre not to donate blood to Indian Army

During the 1962 war between India and China, the Indian Communist parties issued a diktat to their party cadre that they shouldn’t donate blood to Indian soldiers. Several Communist leaders had backed China during the war and supported the country’s stance.

Openly said ‘China’s Chairman is our Chairman’

Merely 8 years after the Indo-China war, the Left front in India put posters all over West Bengal which said ‘China’s Chairman is our Chairman’, very openly showing their allegiance to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and Mao Zedong.

Despite hostilities arising between the two nations in 1970s, the Communists seemed to have very openly challenged the nation’s patriotic sentiments.

Received funds from USSR and China

A declassified report from the CIA reveals that the CPI and breakaway CPI (M) were funded directly by China and USSR respectively.

The two parties received funds “through a combination of kickback schemes, normal business transactions and direct cash payments”.

“In addition to party funding, the Soviets channel money to individual Congress and opposition politicians (through) clandestine payments. This cash is reportedly obtained from the favourable Soviet trade balance,” said the document titled “The Soviets in India”, which is one of the millions of CIA memos declassified in 2011.

Mitrokhin Archives allege that CPI and CPIM received funds through several bizarre ways during the cold war, including through car windows during Delhi traffic!

At several instances, India’s Intelligence Bureau intercepted transfer of funds from USSR to CPI during the time of Jawaharlal Nehru. However, these were given a blind eye by the former Prime Minister and such activities continued till the fall of USSR.

Marad Massacre of Hindus in Kerela

On the Marad beach of Kozhikode in Kerala, 8 Hindus were murdered by 62 Muslim workers belonging to CPI (M), Popular Front of India and Indian Union Muslim League. The attackers hacked the innocent Hindus in broad daylight and then proceeded to hurl bombs and other explosives at nearby areas.

Sitaram Yechury attended a conference organized by CCP

In October 2015, Sitaram Yechury (President of CPIM) visited the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) organized by CCP in China. In the meeting, Yechury said that the Communist Party of India (M) values ties with the Chinese Communist Party. He even went on to discuss the foreign policy and economic policy of India with Chinese officials.

No condemnation of China after Galwan Valley clash

After the violent clash between Indian and Chinese soldiers in Galwan Valley of Ladakh, the CPIM issued a statement which did not condemn the Chinese aggression in the area. In fact, the party blamed India for the clashes through its mouthpiece.

“Whatever egregious actions by China, the positions adopted by the Government of India have also contributed to such a situation developing,” the editorial stated.

The editorial magazine also blamed the Union government’s increased leaning towards USA as the reason behind the clashes and worsening bilateral relations.

India’s communist parties have started to lose their autonomy and are slowly becoming puppets of China. It has had a long history of being funded by foreign countries and has continued this trend. With each passing day, the Communist parties of India are proving that they are nothing more than mouthpieces of their bosses in Beijing.

Controversy in Pakistan after actress Saba Qamar shoots song in a Mosque, officers sacked

0

Pakistan has become a synonym to controversies on religious lines. Actress Saba Qamar and her co-star and singer Bilal Saeed had to issue a clarification-cum-apology for shooting a song sequence in the historic Wazir Khan Mosque located in the old city of Lahore.

Qamar, who is known for her role in ‘Hindi Medium’ opposite late actor Irrfan Khan, announced that her song Qubool is releasing on 11th August. Soon after the announcement, a clip of them dancing in the mosque started to circulate on social media that stirred to controversy. As per Islamic law that Pakistan follows, it is strictly prohibited to sing or play music in a mosque.

Saba Qamar posted a teaser video on her Twitter handle and clarified that the video that is circulating on social media “was just a circular camera movement to take stills for the poster of ‘Qabool’ which depicts a happily married couple after their Nikah”. They did not shoot any song sequence in the mosque. She added, “Despite this if we have unknowingly hurt anyone’s sentiments we apologise to you all with all our heart. Love & Peace! #Qubool releasing on 11th of August!” She further added that they did not add any music in the mosque sequence.

Her co-singer Bilal Saeed also posted two videos in which he said that people are circulating a video that shows an entirely different picture from what they have shot. He said, “We, as Muslims, as civilized people and as artists, will never insult or disgrace Islam or any other religion, race, caste, colour or creed.” The tweets were posted in the Urdu language. He promised in the video that they would anyway remove the sequence from the video.

Officers sacked by Pak’s Punjab government

Pakistan’s Punjab government on Sunday announced that they had removed two senior officers who allowed the shooting of the song sequence in the mosque. Punjab Minister for Auqaf and Religious Affairs Saeed Hassan Shah said, “We have suspended two officers – a director and an assistant director – of the Auqaf Department for allegedly allowing the shooting of a dance video in Masjid Wazir Khan. An inquiry has been launched into the matter, and those responsible will be punished,” while talking to the reporters on Sunday.

Application submitted to file a case against the actors

According to the reports, an application was filed in Police station at Iqbal Town to register a case against the actors. The police will examine the legal aspects before registering the case.

Saba is also known for the biopic she did on the social media sensation Qandeel Baloch who was murdered by her brother in 2016. She also made headlines when she expressed her grief over checking she had to face while visiting countries like the US and the UK for being a Pakistani.

Supreme Court refuses to accept ‘regret’ of Prashant Bhushan for 2009 contempt case, says proceedings will go on

0

The Supreme Court of India on Monday refused to accept the ‘regret’ offered by advocate Prashant Bhushan for his comment in an interview to Tehelka magazine in 2009. A contempt of court case was filed against him for saying that half of the past 16 Chief Justices of India were corrupt.

A three-judge bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra was hearing his plea in which he requested to the court to accept his “regret” for his statement of 2009. He gave a written statement in court stating he did not mean to offend the judges. The court refused to accept the plea and posted the matter for hearing on 17th August. The bench said in its order that they want to hear if calling judges corrupt amounts for contempt.

Decade-old case raises questions against ‘outspoken’ Bhushan

In a decade-old case against Prashant Bhushan, the Supreme Court of India held an in-camera proceeding on 4th August. In that hearing Tarun Tejpal, former editor of Tehelka magazine and Prashant Bhushan both gave statements in front of the court. The bench then said that there is a fine line between free speech and contempt. There should be a balance between the right to free speech on the one hand, and on the other hand, it is important to protect the dignity of the judiciary as an institute.

While Tejpal offered an apology for publishing the interview, Bhushan said that his allegations were not referring to the financial status of the judges or their families but the lack of propriety. He said if the court felt otherwise, he regrets his statement.

Multiple cases of contempt against Bhushan

On 22nd July, the same bench issued a suo motu notice to Prashant Bhushan for the remarks he posted on microblogging site Twitter. While replying to the court, Twitter USA as a party said that they would restrict the tweet until the judgement is passed in the case. In the Tweets, Prashant Bhushan raised questions on the functioning of the court and asked how CJI can afford to drive an expensive bike.

In his reply to the court, Bhushan said that being outspoken or disagreeable to someone cannot be interpreted as contempt of court.
