Why will anybody travel to Delhi for Coronavirus treatment? Here is how AAP is bluffing to cover failures

Do you have an opinion on whether the government of Delhi should reserve its Coronavirus wards only for those who are residents of Delhi? Perhaps you agree with them, or you disagree with them. It does not matter. As long as you have an opinion, you have already walked into the trap laid by AAP. You already lost. Congratulations.

Why? Because the specter of “outsiders” coming to Delhi in substantial numbers to get treated for Coronavirus is a non-problem.

Think about it. People travel long distances when they are in need of advanced medical care. For specialized tests, involving sophisticated medical equipment. Or very delicate surgeries.

Coronavirus patients need none of that. Would anyone get into a train and go all the way to Delhi for an oxygen cylinder?

Sadly, there is no cure nor treatment for Coronavirus. No sophisticated medical test, surgery or equipment is involved. Patients are isolated, administered basic medicines to treat fever and congestion. If things don’t improve, they are given oxygen. In worst cases, they are put on ventilator.

Why would anyone travel to Delhi for that? Would anyone with serious symptoms even be physically capable of making the trip to Delhi? Coronavirus is not cancer. It acts too quickly.

Oh and most trains aren’t even running right now. In other words, AAP has created a fake debate around a non-issue. Their real objective is to steer the conversation away from their failures in Delhi.

Here is how much energy the AAP government has invested into the issue.

(1) On Jun 1, Arvind Kejriwal addressed the people of Delhi asking whether outsiders should be treated in Delhi govt hospitals.

(2) About a week later, on Jun 7, Kejriwal announced that he had made up his mind. Predictably, he declared that Delhi govt hospitals (and private hospitals) in Delhi would be reserved only for residents.

(3) Fortunately, Delhi is not a full fledged state. We have a Lt. Governor, who can provide adult supervision to the petulant Delhi CM. Accordingly, the office of LG Anil Baijal moved immediately to overrule the order. In this case however, this is exactly what Kejriwal would have hoped for. So Deputy CM Manish Sisodia is talking to media again about the importance of reserving beds for residents of Delhi.

The AAP just wants to create a scene and get everyone to talk about it. Here is what they don’t want to talk about.

(1) Why is it so hard to get a test in Delhi for those who are showing symptoms? Social media is awash with horror stories of people running from pillar to post trying to get tested.

(2) Why is Delhi govt app failing to give accurate information on availability of beds in city hospitals? Again, social media abounds with horror stories, many from well connected and powerful people. Imagine what the common citizen is going through.

(3) Why has Delhi done such a poor job of contact tracing? According to ICMR, Delhi has traced just 2.1 contacts per confirmed case, which is among the worst in the country. For comparison, Karnataka has traced 47.4 contacts per case. Neighboring Uttar Pradesh has traced 9.8. Why is Delhi lagging behind so badly?

Instead of answering real questions, the AAP government wants to troll people with the imaginary threat of people from all over India pouring into Delhi for oxygen cylinders.

As citizens, we have to call the AAP government’s bluff on the matter. We can’t waste time discussing the issue of whether or not outsiders should be allowed in Delhi hospitals. That’s what AAP wants us to do, instead of asking them real questions on real problems.

And while we are it, we might as well ask two related questions to the liberal ecosystem.

(1) A few months ago, Indian liberals were swept up in the revolutionary spirit of Kaagaz Nahin Dikhayenge. Right now, Delhi government wants to check papers before giving emergency medical treatment. Not citizenship papers, mind you. Mere residency papers. Three months ago, we heard that it is too much hardship if people are given several months to find papers. Now we hear that anyone who is short of breath in Delhi should bring their papers with them while going to hospital.

(2) Have you considered who is most impacted by Delhi govt’s apparent intent to check residency papers? The people most likely to be impacted would be migrants, the poorest and the most marginalized. They are most likely to still have addresses from their “home” states on their papers. Only last week, Indian liberals were crying buckets about the hardships faced by migrant workers.

What now? What was the principle? Did they really have an objection to checking papers? Did they care about migrant workers at all? Or was it just about opposing Modi?

We know the answer already. But it would be helpful if liberals could say it out aloud.

Vishv Books of Delhi Press publishes anti-Hindu literature, books titled ‘Brahman Union’ and ‘Dharam ka Shaap’ sold on Amazon

The Delhi Press has attracted a lot of controversy over the years due to its editorial policies that have often taken a derogatory approach towards the Hindu religion. It is one of India’s largest publishing houses and its popular publications include The Caravan and Champak. One of its associate companies, Vishv Books, publishes textbooks for children along with books on various other issues.

Recently, a user on Twitter, who tweets under the username @kirron909, flagged off several titles Vishv Books had published that were off a markedly anti-Hinduism slant. Some of them were authored by Rakesh Nath, who is one of the inheritors of Delhi Press founded by Vishva Nath, and oversees the affairs of Vishv Books. Titles of the books include Dharmik Karmkand: Pando ka Chakravyuh and Dharm ka Shaap, which were authored by Rakesh Nath himself.

As is evident, the titles suggest a markedly anti-Brahmin stance of the author and it is easy to undrestand why people would take objection to such hate-mongering. Apart from these book, numerous other books are apparently sold by Vishv Books on Amazon which seek to portray Hinduism in a negative light.

Rakesh Nath has authored several other books that target Hinduism. One of his books he authored is titled, ‘Chamatkar ko Namaskar’ (Namaskar to Chamatkar). The description says that every Hindu Guru and Saint has invented fake miracles to further their own commercial interests. Conspicuously, Nath never targets any other religion in such a manner.

Another book, ‘Laat aur Savalaat’, says that priests who officiate over rituals related to marriages and other occasions and ‘babas’ are making fools out of those who have faith in such matters. Again, Rakesh Nath has no words to offer to people from other religions and restricts himself to insulting Hindus alone.

Another book of his, ‘Bhoot Chamatka’, paints Tantriks as thugs.

One book by Rakesh Nath titled ‘Hari Mirch ka Raaz’ (The secret of Green Chillies) claims in its description that every Sadhu and Saint has opened a shop of lies, deceit and dishonesty.

In addition to these books, Titles sold by Vishv Books include ‘Dharam Ek Dhokha’ and ‘Kya Hindu Nari Aaj Bhi Upekshit Hai?’ (Are Hindu Women still ignored to this day?). Another book published by them was titled ‘Brahmin Union’. However, the publication of such titles is consistent with the previous conduct of the publication house.

The October 2019 edition of Champak, one of the publications of Delhi Press which caters to children, indulged in victimhood mongering regarding Kashmiri Muslims following the abrogation of Article 370. It claimed that little children in Kashmir wish to go out and play but couldn’t do so due to the terrible oppression wreaked by the Indian State.

The anti-Hindu propaganda of The Caravan, that performed a caste analysis of the martyrs of the Pulwama Terror Attack, is well known. Another of its publications, Sarita, regularly publishes atrocity literature aimed at Hinduism as well.

Mamata Banerjee threatening journalists with fake FIRs for reporting against state govt: Home Minister Amit Shah

On Tuesday, Union Home Minister of India, Amit Shah launched a scathing attack against the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee while addressing the ‘West Bengal Jan Samvad Rally’.

In his speech, Amit Shah mentioned how the political environment has been deteriorating in West Bengal under the Mamata Banerjee’s rule. The Home Minister also added that the Mamata Banerjee-led government has been threatening and intimidating journalists for exposing her government’s failure.

“The government is threatening journalists by filing fake FIRs. Threats and intimidations have been unleashed on media houses to sack journalists fir writing against the Mamata Banerjee-led government,” Home Minister Amit Shah said in his speech on Tuesday.

At around 1:05:43 hours in the speech, Home Minister Amit Shah can be heard attacking West Bengal government for its continuous targeting of journalists, media houses for reporting facts pertaining to the affairs of the state.

Amit Shah’s attack against Mamata Banerjee-led government comes at a time when the state government has been employing methods to threaten and silence journalists, media houses for reporting the failures of the government to tackle the coronavirus crisis in the state. Many media, including OpIndia had reported regarding the serious health crisis that had emerged in the state.

Following the severe criticism, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had come up with a strange ‘warning‘ for the media, asking journalists to “behave properly”. She had threatened the media to behave well or otherwise, her government would take action against them under the present Disaster Management Act.

Kashmir: LeT’s new proxy group TRF takes responsibility for the assassination of Sarpanch Ajay Pandita, says no ‘political stooges’ will be spared

Pakistan-sponsored terrorist group ‘The Resistance Front’ (TRF) has taken responsibility for the assassination of Kashmiri Pandit Sarpanch Ajay Pandita in South Kashmir. Ajay Pandita was an elected Sarpanch of Lokbowan Larkipora in Anantnag.

TRF is another proxy name being used for Lashkar-e-Taiba. As per reports, the new group, a new propaganda machine for Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in Kashmir, has been active for the last few months. Though it claims to be ‘secular’, many experts have stated that the group is just one of the proxy names being used by Hafiz Saeed’s Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

As per reports, the terrorist group issued a statement in which it warned that no ‘political stooge’ who stands with the ‘occupational regime’ will be spared. The Statement of the terror group said, “No political stooge/collaborator who stands alongside the occupational regime will be spared. Ajay Pandita Sarpanch was one of these political leeches who tarnish the image of Jammu and Kashmir. These are the main reason for our occupational regimes to stay on our land the JK.”

It further threatened that “No one will be spared who is hand in glove with the occupational regime and strengthen their illegal occupation. Innocents won’t be touched so don’t drag this with religion.”

Journalist Aditya Kaul has stated that the local police in Jammu and Kashmir also suspect the involvement of local Hizbul terrorist in the Sarpanch’s murder.

Kashmiri Pandit Sarpanch was killed by terrorists

The Kashmiri Pandit Sarpanch Ajay Pandita was shot dead by the unidentified terrorists in the Anantnag district of South Kashmir. As per sources, he had been to work in his orchard when he was attacked by the terrorists. The area has been cordoned off soon after the shooting.

Notably, the incident happened hours after the security forces eliminated 4 terrorists in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir. A cache of arms and ammunition had been retrieved from the slain terrorists.

TRF

TRF was reportedly launched late last year after abrogation of Article 370 which made Jammu & Kashmir an integral part of India without any riders attached. According to Indian security officials, the Lashkar leaders formed the core of the group and handled from Pakistan. Sajad Jatt for South Kashmir, Khalid for Central Kashmir and Hanzala Adnan for North Kashmir were named in the security report, states HT.

Journalist Madhu Trehan’s husband, Naresh Trehan, booked for forgery and money laundering: Here is all you need to know

On Saturday, a First Information Report (FIR) was reportedly lodged at Gurgaon Sadar police station against cardiologist Naresh Trehan and 15 others, including private companies and unnamed Harayana Government authorities on charges of corruption, forgery, criminal conspiracy, and money laundering and 7 other counts in the land allotment case of Medanta Hospital.

Naresh Trehan who is the co-founder of Medanta Hospital is also is the husband of NewsLaundry founder Madhu Trehan and the brother-in-law of Aroon Purie, the founder of India Today Group. The six-page FIR was registered against him and others on the directions of Addition Session Judge Ashwani Kumar, following the complaint of one Raman Sharma, a resident of Malibu Town.

The accused have been booked on 11 charges under Sections 120B, 406, 463, 467, 468, and 471 Indian Penal Code (IPC), Prevention of Money-laundering Act (PMLA), and Prevention of the Corruption Act. According to police officials, the case pertains to irregularities in the 53-acre land allotment case for Medicity for which locals were ousted in 2004.

Details of the Case

As per the FIR, Naresh Trehan, who was the major promotor of the project, lacked the financial capacity to complete the ₹900 crore project. The complainant alleged that the government did not appoint officials from the Health Department on the board of the hospital to inquire into the finances of the accused. As per reports, the complainant alleged that the subscribed value of Global Health Private Limited (GHP) was just 10% of the amount committed by Trehan.

The FIR alleged that Trehan conspired with two private firms, created a shell company, issued partly paid shares to GHP and granted full rights to the said firms without government permission. The complainant also stated that the accused flouted the advertisement terms in pursuit of his personal agenda. Reportedly, Trehan, in collusion with unnamed officials, obtained Occupational Certificate based on ‘misrepresentation’ and di not allow competitors to bid for the project.

Complainant approaches Courrt

The said project that began in 2004 did not reach its conclusion even after 15 years. As such, Raman Sharma filed a complaint with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on June 24, 2019. However, since no adequate progress happened in the case, Sharma approached the Court which in turn rejected his application.

Recently, the complainant learnt that the ED had forwarded the complaint to the Harayana police but an FIR was not registered in the case. On approaching the district court alleging that several documents were not available in public domain, Sharma was successful in getting an FIR registered within 24 hours, on the orders of the Court. According to Station House Officer (SHO) of Gurgaon Sadar, the case is being probed by senior officers.

Medanta denies claims

Medanta has refuted the charges calling them baseless and motivated. A spokesperson representing the hospital claimed that the allegations in this complaint are completely false, baseless, and motivated.

Others implicated in the case include SAS Infotech, Dunearn Investments (Mauritius), GL Asia Mauritius, Global Infracon, Punj Lloyd, chief administrator, administrator, and Estate Officers-2 of Haryana Urban Development Corporation (HUDA) in Gurgaon, and the director of General Health Services.

Pakistan: Donkey named in FIR, ‘arrested’ with 8 men for participating in a gambling race

The Pakistan police in the Punjab province have arrested a donkey and eight other suspects for their alleged involvement in a gambling race. As per a report in Samaa tv, the incident happened in Rahim Yar Khan City of Punjab province.

Reportedly, the local police nabbed eight men for their involvement in conducting the gambling race of donkeys. The police arrested the donkey too as its name was mentioned in the FIR for ‘participating in the race’.

As per the report, 120,000 Pakistani rupees were recovered from the gamblers. The money was allegedly meant for betting. As per the SHO, the donkey has been ‘arrested’ along with its owner on the spot of the crime and is currently tied up inside the police station premises.

The arrests in the Punjab province have been made under ‘Prevention of Gambling ordinance’.

While the video and the news have generated a laughter riot online, it can be noted here that the donkey may have been kept in the station because its owner is lodged there too. Such confiscation of animals is routine in rural areas as domestic animals cannot be abandoned out in the open and unless a family member turns up to claim, or the owner is released on bail, keeping the animal inside the station premises may have been the only option.

State facts, not rhetorics: Group of Intellectuals and Academics on Mark Zuckerberg’s ‘leaked’ tape on Delhi riots

Group of Intellectuals and Academicians (GIA) have written an open letter to Facebook chief and and urged him to stick to facts and refrain from making statements based on rhetorics. The letter comes days after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg allegedly used the anti-Hindu riots in NE Delhi as a yardstick to apprise his 25000 employees how to deal with hate speeches and offensive content on the social media platform.

As per reports, a ‘leaked’ audio conversation between Zuckerberg and his employees that BJP leader Kapil Mishra’s speech on anti-CAA rioters was an example of inciting violence. BJP leader Kapil Mishra took to his official Twitter handle to share the open letter by the GIA.

The GIA informed the Facebook CEO that it had sent a fact-finding team to areas in Delhi that were hit by violence earlier this year. It said that tensions in Delhi were mounting ever since the Indian government brought in the Citizenship Amendment Act in December last year. According to the ground reports the anti-CAA protesters had been running riots on the streets of Delhi since mid-December 2019. The GIA informed Mark that the riots which he had made reference to in his speech were mostly area specific. The area affected “by the ‘encouragement’ that you mentioned has happened on February 23, 2020, is called Jaffrabad”, read the letter.

Delhi anti-Hindu riots were area-specific and pre-planned conspiracy

Violence during this period was confined to Saleempur and Jaffrabad. The letter highlights that in all episodes 7 incidences of violence during the period which Mark mentioned in his speech, Delhi police was subjected to intense stone-pelting and public property were destroyed.

The group said that a total of 13 cases of rioting were registered against people protesting the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Delhi. In at least seven incidents of violence, Delhi Police was subjected to intense stone-pelting while the public property was destroyed, added the group.

The intellectuals and academicians then stressed that Delhi Police had tried to bring the situation in control by regularly appealing to local leaders of the affected areas to help maintain peace and harmony, especially on Friday, which is an obligatory day of worship for the Muslims.

The Delhi police, in preparation for the upcoming Friday on December 20, 2020, had held several meetings with local leaders of all masjids in the area and appealed to maintain law and order and peace. Despite that, after the Friday Namaz, almost 40,000 people descended on the streets, sloganeering against the Citizenship Amendment Act and makings call for Azadi. The crowd remained agitated till 2 in the morning, read the letter.

The GIA then went on to claim that the incident which Zuckerberg referred in his speech was from February 23 when a group of anti-CAA protesters blocked the road, began pelting stones and violence intensified later in the night.

The letter thus concluded that the incident Mark’s speech mentioned during his interaction with his 25000 employees was a pre-planned conspiracy and was mostly area specific. Moreover, it was an immensely provocative act by the anti-CAA protestors who blocked an arterial road inconveniencing almost 25 lakh commuters in the intervening night between February 22 and 23, 2020. A violent crowd of stone-pelters had already gathered on the road by the afternoon of February 23. By night the violence intensified, claimed GIA in it’s letter.

“Mr Zuckerberg, we appreciate that you are a responsible person and your statement must be made with the conviction of facts and data rather than rhetoric. We have presented you with the facts. Please take note,” read the letter.

Delhi riots a planned conspiracy by left-jihadi network

GIA is the same group which had on March 11, 2020, submitted a report to the Ministry of Home Affairs on the anti-Hindu riots in the national capital. As per reports, the 51-pages long report titled ‘The Shaheen Bagh Model in Northeast Delhi: From Dharna to Danga’, the riots were a preplanned conspiracy.

The report had suggested that the Delhi riots were a planned conspiracy which took place because of radicalisation of Muslims over time. The report further states how the riots spread in Bhajanpura, Shiv Vihar, Gokulpuri, Brijpuri, Brahmapuri and surrounding areas where men and women attacked the Delhi Police. Important public places like petrol pumps and high value properties belonging to Hindus were also damaged. The report mentions that the over time the weapons were stockpiled and high-rise buildings were used as launchpad for petrol bombs.

The report further stated that the links from across the border and ISIS type brutality in murders point towards planned conspiracy in the riots.

Group of Intellectuals and Academicians

The Group of Intellectuals and Academicians (GIA) was formed in 2015 and includes Advocate Monika Arora, Delhi University Assistant Professors Prerna Malhotra (Ram Lal Anand College), Sonali Chitalkar (Miranda House), Shruti Mishra (PG DAV College –Evening) and Divyansha Sharma (Institute of Home Economics) as its members.

People of West Bengal will reduce her to a “political refugee” says Amit Shah. Here are the 5 scathing remarks made by Shah against Mamata Banerjee

Union Home Minister of India, Amit Shah today launched a blistering attack against the chief minister Mamata Banerjee while addressing a West Bengal virtual rally-Jan Samwad. Shah slammed the Trinamool Congress supremo over the deteriorating political environment in West Bengal and dared her to be transparent on the account of the work done by TMC while being in power.

Shah was addressing third such virtual rally in three days. Earlier on Sunday, Shah addressed ‘Bihar virtual rally’ and on Monday ‘Odisha virtual rally’. The former BJP President warned the West Bengal CM that her opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act would reduce her into a “political refugee” in the upcoming elections and criticised her for depriving the people of Bengal of the Centre’s welfare schemes like Ayushman Bharat and PM Kisaan. Here are the 5 attacks Amit Shah made against the West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress Party.

Mamata Banerjee’s opposition to CAA would render her into a “political refugee”

Union Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday warned Mamata Banerjee that she would pay the price of opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act. Mamata Banerjee and other opposition political parties had opposed the passage of the CAA after it was enacted last December. Shah said that Mamata Banerjee had become “red” with anger after the Central Government passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill in the parliament.

In a sharp attack against the West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Shah said that the Trinamool Congress supremo’s opposition against the Citizenship Amendment Act was against the welfare of Matua and Namashudra communities living in Bengal. He questioned Mamata Banerjee’s decision to protest against the CAA. Shah asserted that Mamata’s opposition to the CAA signifies how she had been hurt by the Matua community. The Matua community are refugees from Bangladesh and have been demanding Indian citizenship.

Shah forewarned Mamata that when the ballot boxes are opened, the “people of West Bengal would make her a political refugee for opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act”.

Mamata Banerjee is impeding the central government from helping Bengal farmers

Home Minister Shah asserted that the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government in West Bengal is impeding the central government’s efforts in helping the poor farmers of the state. Shah alleged that Mamata Banerjee has been stonewalling centre’s measure of transferring Rs 6,000 to farmers’ account by withholding their details and not sharing them with the centre.

“I’m requesting Mamata Ji again – if you send us the list of farmers, we will send them Rs 6,000 each. Why are you stopping your farmers from receiving help from the government?”, asked Amit Shah.

Mamata Banerjee’s refusal to join Ayushman Bharat deprived Bengalis of basic health care

Speaking about the refusal of the West Bengal government to join centre’s Ayushman Bharat health scheme, Amit Shah questioned Mamata Banerjee for playing politics over the rights of poor people and depriving them of basic health care.

HM Amit Shah said how over 1 crore people across India have availed free surgeries under Ayushman Bharat. “BJP Bengal karyakartas clapping and applauding this, sorry to break it to you but you do not get the benefit because your chief minister Mamata Banerjee has not implemented the scheme. Do the poor people of Bengal have no right to receive free and quality treatment? Why then, would you not allow the Ayushman Bharat scheme here? Mamata Ji, stop doing politics on the rights of poor people. You can do politics on a lot of other issues, but not on poors’ health,” He said.

Mamata Banerjee insulted ‘Shramik Special’ trains by labelling them as ‘Corona Express’

In a scathing attack against the West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Amit Shah on Tuesday said that the insulting label of ‘Corona Express’ given by her to ‘Shramik Special’ migrant trains will become her exit route from Bengal. Shah’s remarks came after Mamata Banerjee criticised the central government for running trains for ferrying migrants from across the country amidst the increasing number of coronavirus cases.

“The name ‘Corona Express’ that you have given, Mamata didi, will become your exit route. You’ve added salt to the wounds of the migrant workers and they will not forget this,” Amit Shah said, addressing BJP workers online.

West Bengal remains the only state where political violence is propagated

Home Minister Amit Shah while addressing Bengal BJP said that over 100 political workers have lost their lives due to the rampant political violence in the state. While democracy has consolidated in the entire country, West Bengal remains the only state where political violence is propagated, Shah made a sharp remark against the complicity of Mamata Banerjee-led TMC party in West Bengal which has often been accused of unleashing violence against the BJP workers.

Shah paid a tribute to political workers who lost their lives in the political attacks in the state since 2014. “I pay my respect to their families as they have contributed to the development of Sonar Bangla (Golden Bengal),” he said.

Who killed Swedish PM Olof Palme to be revealed soon: Could this signal fresh trouble for Gandhis in the Bofors case?

More than 30 years ago in 1986, the Swedish Prime Minister, Olaf Palme was murdered in cold blood. Palme was shot in the back at close range on a Stockholm street while walking home from the cinema with his wife Lisbeth. There have been several theories about the murder of Palme and almost 35 years on, the world might finally know who killed him and why he had to die. The prosecutors investigating the case have received a dossier from South Africa and the Swedes are set to present their findings on the Olaf Palme assassination. While this might put many ghosts to rest, it might sound trouble for the Gandhi family as well if at all the Olaf Palme assassination turns out to have a connection to the Bofors scam.

Theories about the murder of Olof Palme

There are several theories about the assassination of Olof Palme. One theory claims that the South African apartheid intelligence services, motivated by Palme’s support for the African National Congress and his efforts to close down arms and oil smuggling rings involving the apartheid regime became the reason for his assassination.

Another theory is that Olaf Palme was killed by an individual acting out of ideological hatred for the Social Democrat prime minister. One suspect is Stig Engström, known as “Skandia man” because he worked for the Swedish insurance company in offices next to the scene of the murder.

However, there is another theory that is of particular important to India, and especially the Gandhi family. It is also alleged that Olaf Palme may have been killed over the Bofors scam.

One of the theories furthered by Dr Jan Bondeson, the author of Blood on the Snow: The Killing of Olof Palme, told the BBC that she believes that middlemen involved in the Bofors scandal of the 1980s were responsible for his killing.

“It may well be that Palme found out that the Bofors company was corrupt the very day of the murder,” he said. “That gives the middlemen behind the Bofors deal a strong reason to murder him. But that’s something the police have always ignored,” Bondeson told the BBC.

Olaf Palme, Rajiv Gandhi and the Bofors scandal

The Bofors scam was one, over 30 years ago, that bought the Rajiv Gandhi government to its knees. On March 18, 1986, India signed a Rs 1,437-crore deal with Swedish arms manufacturer AB Bofors for the supply of 400 155 mm Howitzer guns for the Army. A year later, on April 16, 1987, a Swedish radio channel alleged that the company had bribed top Indian politicians and defence personnel to secure the contract. The subsequent investigation led to several layers being exposed by the then investigative journalist Chitra Subramaniam. In her investigation, she had revealed and asserted repeatedly that Rajiv Gandhi was personally culpable in the Bofors scam.

A journalist investigating the Bofors scam, Chitra Subramaniam had revealed that there was a quid pro quo arrangement between Rajiv Gandhi and Olof Palme in the Bofors scandal. Bofors would pay money to a foundation in Sweden to make it easier for payments to be made to Indians and others.

In a report published in The News Minute, Chitra had reported:

This conversation took place on a flight in the latter part of January 1986 when the two Prime Ministers were travelling together. Rajiv Gandhi “urgently requested Olof Palme to receive funds from Bofors as a counter-weight” to payments in India,” Sten Lindstrom, the police official who led the investigations has told TNM.

“Olof Palme and Martin Ardbo informed Rajiv Gandhi that the funds could be paid from Bofors to a foundation in Sweden for the purpose of promoting industry and employment in the Karlskoga region” where the Swedish arms manufacturer is located.  This conversation took place towards the end of the negotiations, at a time when the Swedes were worried the contract would be granted to the French whose lobbying in New Delhi and Paris was fierce. The Howitzer contract with Bofors was signed in March 1986.

Author and journalist Steig Larsson had also expressed his suspicions about the murder of Olaf Palme having something to do with the Bofors scandal.

In a letter Stieg Larsson wrote only 20 days after the assassination, he mentions that weapons dealings may be the motive.

In a Times of India interview of Larsson, he says:

That’s also what I come to at the end of my investigation. It involves Bofors, India and several other countries. Remember that PM Rajiv Gandhi came to Olof Palme’s funeral on March 15, 1986, and that’s when he officially confirmed the order of 400 pieces of 155mm howitzers of a value of Rs 1,437-crore. When Olof Palme was shot he had already started a campaign to stop illegal weapon deliveries to Iran through several transit countries, which is a very valid motive for the assassination.

In fact, CIA documents had revealed something far worse. The documents had revealed that Sweden had closed the investigation into the Bofors scandal because it wanted to save Rajiv Gandhi from the blowback of the investigation.

Sonia Gandhi, her maternal family and the Bofors scam

In an exclusive story, OpIndia had revealed the possible involvement of Sonia Gandhi and her maternal Italian family in the Bofors scam. OpIndia has accessed evidence to show that Sonia Gandhi’s Italian family could have been involved in the Bofors scandal, with their names carefully hidden from the public eye. The documentary evidence also points towards the fact that perhaps, the government of India (GOI) under Rajiv Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi himself had knowledge of the alleged involvement and actively tried to cover it up.

The details of that investigation can be read here.

While there are several theories about the assassination of Olaf Palme and any one of them could be true, nobody really knows what the revelations might be, come Wednesday. However, at the off-chance that the investigation does reveal Bofors as the reason for his assassination, it could open a can of worms and a world of problems for the Gandhi family.

Amit Shah sounds the poll bugle in West Bengal through virtual rally, says BJP government in state will bring back the ‘Sonar Bangla’ glory

Union Home Minister and BJP leader Amit Shah kicked off the party’s campaign for West Bengal 2021 Assembly elections on Tuesday with a virtual rally. Amit Shah addressed the ‘West Bengal Jan Samvad Rally’ via multiple social media platforms.

Amit Shah started his virtual address by describing West Bengal as a land of great leaders and intellectuals like Rabindranath Tagore, Subhas Chandra Bose, among many others. Earlier this week, Shah had addressed a virtual rally in Bihar.

Amit Shah pays respect to deceased BJP workers

Addressing the rally, Amit Shah mentioned the political killings of BJP workers in West Bengal. Amit Shah also assured that the party will not forget the sacrifice of workers.

“Since 2014, over 100 BJP workers lost their lives in political battle here in West Bengal. I pay my respect to their families as they have contributed to the development of Sonar Bangla. Their sacrifice will be etched in golden letters once BJP fulfils the dreams of the people of bringing about real change in West Bengal,” said former BJP President Amit Shah.

The Home Minister also added that while democracy has strengthened its roots and has been consolidated in the entire country, “West Bengal remains the only state where political violence is propagated”.

Amit Shah also said he prayed for the souls of all those who have lost their lives in the fight against coronavirus and the destruction caused by Cyclone Amphan in the state.

“Bengal is the only state where communal violence is still ongoing. It should stop. I assure you that BJP isn’t here just to bring a revolution or do politics, but also build a cultural and traditional Bengal again. We want to create Sonar Bangla again,” he said.

Lashing out at the Mamata Banerjee government, Amit Shah said that the BJP will return West Bengal to its glory.

The Home Minister also pointed out that how opposition parties and leaders, including Rahul Gandhi had criticised the Jan Dhan bank accounts. “It is through these accounts that 51 crore people have received direct financial benefits in the time of coronavirus pandemic,” Shah added.

Amit Shah questions Mamata Banerjee over implementation of Ayushman Bharat

In his speech, Amit Shah also criticised regarding Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government’s decision not to allow the implementation of Ayushman Bharat. Amit Shah asked whether people of Bengal did not have the right to get free access to free health.

“Do the poor people of Bengal have no right to receive free and quality treatment? Why then, would you not allow the Ayushman Bharat scheme here? Mamata Ji, stop doing politics on the rights of poor people. You can do politics on a lot of other issues, but not on poor person’s health,” warned Amit Shah.

The Home Minister also said that even Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has accepted it in the end but asked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was not letting the scheme be implemented in West Bengal.

Questions Mamata on CAA

Questioning Mamata Banerjee’s opposition to Citizenship Amendment Act, Shah said, “Mamata Ji needs to come clean on why she is opposing the CAA. What is your problem if Namshudras and other such communities live respectfully in the country?” He further challenged her to hold a press conference and give out a report card of her governance in past term.

Corona Express

Slamming Banerjee for calling the Shramik special trains for transporting migrants back to their home states as ‘Corona Express’, Shah said, “UP has received 1700 trains, Bihar 1500. I was astonished when Mamata didi named trains that were coming to Bengal ‘Corona Express’. The name ‘Corona Express’ that you have given, Mamata didi, will become your exit route. You’ve added salt to the wounds of the migrant workers and they will not forget this.”

Home Minister Shah’s Tuesday’s virtual rally comes a day after he addressed the ‘Odisha Jansamvad’ virtual rally on Monday. On Sunday, the Home Minister had addressed the ‘Bihar Jansamvad’ beginning his series of online rallies.
