Darr ka mahaul: Why has India’s most honest reporter not been on air for the last 3 days?

He is the voice of the voiceless. For the millions of people – students, workers, farmers, women, Dalits, tribals, who feel disenfranchised ever since the BJP came to power in 2014, he was the one true hope. Every night, for one hour or so, his followers could tune in to his show and escape the harsh reality of their marginalized existence. No more fear, no more hopelessness, no more intolerance. Only justice. He would announce himself in his sobering voice and his topic for the day. The powers that be would be tried in his court and always found guilty.

This was real journalism; speaking truth to power the way it was supposed to be.

Except, where has it been for the last three days? Why has the light gone out of our lives? Why is there darkness everywhere?

Did something happen in the news that India’s most honest reporter had to go into hiding? Perhaps there is a story out there that he doesn’t want to cover? Why not? Is he scared? We know that cannot be, for he is fearless. Then, the question is : what are his incentives?

And in the meantime, what happens to his millions of followers? Without his nightly show telling them what to think, where do they go? Last I heard, they were so much in love with him that they were adding his name to their own. It was their homage to him and his fearless reporting. One night on his show, he acknowledged the affection of his disciples. What a day it must have been for them!

Think about that: half the folks at Singhu border have changed their names in support of him. Imagine entire villages full of people, all with the same name, marching in lock step behind their dear leader. Sounds exactly like all free societies, right? Now, is there any journalist in the whole world who can command such loyalty?

Except, where is their dear leader? Why is he hiding from the biggest story in the country right now?

What does he have to fear on his show? It is all his. He does not have opposing views on his show, not even for token reasons, just to shout them down. There is no shouting on his show ever. Because the only voice that is allowed is his. Let alone bring on people who disagree with him, he rarely ever hosts people who agree with him. Because even if people agree with you, they might word it somewhat differently. And since he always has the truth and the only authorized version of the truth, he is the only one who ever speaks on his show.

In fact, that is supposed to be what makes his show so great : that he is the only one who speaks on it. Bringing in other people would induce cacophony. That would make his show just like the shouting matches on other channels. Things work so much better when you have only one view and only one voice to express it. And when that voice is guaranteed to give us the truth, why would we want to hear anyone else?

Even his employers seem scared of him, or at least in awe of him. He once said that he does not allow his employer to cut up his show and upload snippets of it to Youtube. That would be sacrilege. Imagine dismantling the Mona Lisa into fragments. If they did that, would you be able to appreciate the sublime greatness of the masterpiece? Now, I am a small person. I would not understand either the Mona Lisa as a whole, or in parts. But I know other people would. His show is just like that. He insists that they upload his show to Youtube as a whole.

If he had his way, he would probably insist that people only be allowed to watch his show on youtube or on TV as a whole as well. No getting up halfway, no eating or drinking, no switching channels midway. You must stand to attention while watching him make his historic announcements on a nightly basis. I bet half the folks at Singhu border already do this.

So where is he? Why is he hiding from his own show? And his own followers?

Others have tried to shut him down before. He always found a way to reach them. He spoke to them from behind a darkened screen. Only a voice from the ether; no visuals. When the intolerance grew too much, he found even more novel ways of reaching out to his followers. He brought people with painted faces to speak on air in language that sounded like gibberish. Except it was not gibberish. It was a coded language that only his followers could understand. From the mind of a genius to his loyal disciples. No fascist government could have intercepted that line of communication.

But things are different on the media landscape right now. There is a big story on the prowl. If you are on the scene, you cannot possibly ignore it. But if you choose to take that story by the horns, you will have to speak real truth to real power. And there will be no international awards for speaking that truth.

That’s why radio silence. No black screen. No painted face. And no mimes. Just silence.

To his followers I say: this silence is the reality of your savior. Ye chuppi hi aaj ka show hai…

West Bengal: Drunk man jumps into lion’s cage in Kolkata’s Alipore Zoo, scared animal still in panic mode

0

On March 19 (Friday) a 40-year-old man was left injured after he jumped inside the lion’s enclosure in Kolkata’s Alipore zoo. Though the man, identified as Gautam Guchait, escaped with minor injuries, the Asiatic lion has remained in a state of panic ever since the incident took place, told the Zoo manager Ashish Samanta to the media.

The Zoo manager said that Gautam Guchait was in an inebriated state when he jumped into the lion’s enclosure at around 10.30 am on Friday. The lion, which was out of its cage then, attacked Guchait, a resident of Patashpur in East Midnapore, around his right leg, shoulders, waist and neck, dragged him around 30ft into its shelter and then released him.

While the Zoo vet said, “The lion acted more in self-defence because it got nervous by the intrusion. A full-fledged attack would have killed the man.” The Zoo manager Ashish Samanta added that the lion was frightened to see a human inside his enclosure and has remained scared since the incident.

According to reports, the other visitors alerted the zoo workers about the incident. When the workers reached the enclosure they found Gautam Guchait lying injured on the ground. Guchait was immediately rushed to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata and his family was informed.

“The man was lying inside the enclosure, writhing in pain. Biswas, a male lion, went near him and lunged a paw at him. The lion then clawed him into one of the rooms in the night shelter at the rear end of the enclosure,” Samanta said.

The team of keepers, guards and vets entered the enclosure and started banging on the iron mesh at the rear end to divert the lion’s attention. The ploy worked and the moment Biswas moved into the second room, a keeper shut the door of the first, added the Zoo manager.

According to the Alipore Zoo authorities, the lion named Biswas was brought from the Hyderabad zoo three years ago. Besides Biswas, there are currently three more lions in the zoo.

However, after the incident, the safety and security of cages and enclosures of the zoo are being strengthened. According to Kolkata’s Alipore Zoo officials, the height of the wire mesh on the lion’s den is being further increased and the number of CCTVs is also being increased.

Interfaith couple demands security cover after Muslim mob in Sarai Kale Khan unleashed violence against Hindus over their marriage

The interfaith couple in Delhi’s Sarai Kale Khan has recently released a video demanding security cover for them after a horrifying spate of violence was unleashed by the Muslim mob in the region over the interfaith marriage between a Hindu man and a Muslim woman.

In the video, the couple has exhorted the Prime Minister of India and the President to provide security to them from the family members of the Muslim woman, who have been on a rampage since the couple tied the knot earlier on March 17.

“The woman’s family members are provoking riots in the area. Our society has been attacked with knives, brickbats, swords and there one Muslim woman who has attacked women in our area with a knife. Many of the people have got injured in the attack and my father has been constantly given death threats,” the man said.

(An earlier version of the article had a tweet embedded that had shared the viral video of the interfaith couple. We have removed it keeping in mind the safety of the couple. We request readers not to share the viral video as the interfaith couple is under threat from the Muslim mob that had earlier attacked the boy’s family and relatives in Sarai Kale Khan area.)

The Muslim woman in the video reaffirms that she had married of her own volition and that her family members are against her marriage and are trying to threaten her husband’s family with violence and riots.

“My family members are against our marriage. Therefore, It is my humble request to the Prime Minister of the country, and the President to provide us with a security cover and stand by us,” the woman pleads.

Hindus in Sarai Kale Khan attacked by a Muslim mob after a Hindu man married a Muslim woman

Hindu Houses in Delhi were attacked by a Muslim mob on Saturday night after a Muslim woman decided to marry a Dalit man and go live with his family. The incident occurred at Harijan Basti in Sarai Kale Khan, Delhi.

While the coverage of the incident in the mainstream media has been muted, OpIndia reached the spot to hear the victim’s version of events.

The victims told OpIndia that the rioters entered their area through the ‘Masjid waali Gali’. They told us that construction was underway near the Masjid and it was from there that the rioters picked the stones which were used to attack the Hindu houses.

The victims also told us that the Police told them to clear the stones from the area before the media could reach the spot. They told us that the Police cleared the area of the stones so that journalists could not see the stones when they arrived.

‘A corrected version of NRC will be implemented in Assam’: BJP promises in its manifesto ahead of Assam elections

The BJP national president JP Nadda today released the election manifesto of the upcoming assembly polls in Assam, assuring to work on the corrected National Register of Citizens(NRC) that would ensure Assam’s protection. Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal and state Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma were also present on the occasion.

    10. Empower the people of Assam by providing them with the right to own their land

Assam is all set to go to the assembly election polls from March 27. The voting process will be held in three phases and the counting of the votes will be done on May 2. In 2016, BJP scripted a historic victory and formed a government for the first time in the state, ending Congress’ 15-year rule. BJP and its allies AGP and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) won a combined 86 seats in the 126-member Assam assembly. BJP had won 60 seats, AGP 14, and BPF 12 seats.

However, this time around, the BPF has joined hands with the Congress-led coalition ‘Mahajath’ after breaking away from the BJP-led coalition. BJP is contesting the polls in Assam in alliance with Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) alliance.

Maha govt digs itself deeper into a messy hole, but Tavleen Singh sees a BJP plot

The magic of Mumbai is such that everything just has to be filmy. From political leaders threatening actresses with physical violence to bringing a municipal body to illegally demolish bungalows, from police officers doing ‘hafta vasooli’ for ministers to the government digging up closed cases to harass journalists, everything is thicker than the best (actually, read worst) Abbas Mastan movie plot.

As the Maharashtra government and the leaders who control that government keep getting tied up in their own mess, there is a section of our ‘secular-liberal’ media that is already imagining a ‘BJP hand’ in all this.

We are all aware of the mess in Mumbai. But the ‘secular-liberal’ gang has already decided that since it is proving to be a loss, and looking bad for the ‘secular’ parties they supported, it must be blamed on the BJP.

Tavleen Singh’s tweet

Tavleen Singh represents one of the farthest reaches a ‘liberal’ mind can go. After all, she claims to be the authority of all Army-related issues “because she grew up near Army camps”, and all agricultural issues “because she grew up in farms”.

Her choice of words is careful. She doesn’t call it a political mess, or anything that would indicate the possibility of bad political decisions by the MVA government stakeholders. She calls it a ‘bizarre plot’. She asserts the alleged conspiracy and abnormality of the events by using those words, buttressing her next phrase, “to bring down the Maharashtra government”.

Let’s examine what Tavleen is trying to assert here. The Maharashtra government was politically infallible when they were demolishing Kangana Ranaut’s office and house, when Shiv Sena leaders were assaulting common people for their social media views, when Anil Deshmukh ordered the opening of an already closed case from 2018 just to harass Arnab Goswami, the journalist who was asking them uncomfortable questions.

Maharashtra government was stable and infallible all through the total failure of handling the Covid crisis, but now it is suddenly looking bad because one Sachin Vaze, the police officer who has been handling high-profile cases like Arnab Goswami’s arrest, was found ‘bizarrely’ involved in a ‘plot’ where he was allegedly himself placing explosives in a car near Mukesh Ambani’s house. A can of worms has been opened because the owner of the car was found murdered.

Sachin Vaze is the key behind this entire ‘fiasco’ that is troubling the Maharashtra government and their cheerleader ‘secular liberals’ because suddenly everything is looking bad. Suddenly the public cannot be fooled by media narratives of ‘world’s best CM’ and Bollywood praises. Though politically the coalition may still have the numbers and far from any instability, the public opinion is looking very bad as of now.

Tavleen is actually suggesting that Sachin Vaze, who had been out of his job since 2004 for his alleged involvement in a custodial death case, was a ‘plot by BJP’ to topple the MVA government. Let’s try to wrap our heads around this. Sachin Vaze had joined Shiv Sena in 2007. Sachin Vaze was reinstated under peculiar circumstances by order of the MVA government in June 2020. Sachin Vaze has been driving around in posh cars, keeping lakhs of rupees in his vehicles. Sachin Vaze was made the head of CIU by orders of the MVA government. But somehow, we are to believe that the officer who was handpicked by the MVA government is out to topple it.

So, as per Tavleen Singh’s suggestion, Shiv Sena inducted Sachin Vaze into their party, Shiv Sena-led government reinstated him into active police duty, Shiv Sena-led government made him CIU head so that he can one fine day he becomes the key to bring down the Shiv Sena government?

Even Bollywood won’t come up with such a bad, rotten plot.

American anti-vaxxer author tricked into endorsing fake quote from porn star ‘doctor’ Johny Sins

Ken Klippenstein, reporter at The Intercept, managed to scam American anti-vaxxer author Naomi Wolf into sharing a fake quote by porn star Johnny Sins. The author appeared to believe that it was an authentic quote from a genuine doctor when she shared the quote.

The quote shared by Naomi Wolf said, “If a vaccine is effective, then why do we need to pressure people to take it? Informed consent means letting patients make their own choices.” The quote was apparently by ‘Dr. John Sims’.

Johnny Sins himself retweeted the The Intercept reporter’s tweet on the matter. Naomi Wolf has since then deleted the tweet but not before people had screenshotted her tweet and poured scorn upon her.

One person wrote, “Ken got Naomi Wolf – who is an anti-vaxxer and has been spreading misinformation left and right – to post a fake quote from a fake doctor along with a photo of the adult film star Johnny Sins. This is how top-notch her vetting of information is.”

Naomi Wolf has been critical of Coronavirus lockdowns. She said, “Lockdowns have never been done in society and really, we are turning into a totalitarian state before everyone’s eyes. The state has now crushed businesses, kept us from gathering in free assembly to worship as the First Amendment provides, is invading our bodies.”

“Which is a violation of the Fourth Amendment, restricting movement, fining us in New York state… the violations go on and on,” she added.

Earlier, former Pakistan envoy to India Abdul Basit had confused Johnny Sins for a Kashmiri who had lost his eyesight due to pellet guns.

West Bengal: Congress ally Indian Secular Front leader’s house set ablaze after chief Abbas Siddiqui rally, party blames TMC

As the Assembly election draws nearer, the fight for the political space gets brutal in West Bengal. On March 21 (Sunday), the house of an Indian Secular Front (ISF) leader was set on fire in West Bengal South 24 Parganas district. The incident took place at Shapa in the Bhangor police station area.

ISF leader Ajit Molla was returning home after attending party chief Abbas Siddiqui’s rally when his house was set on fire. No one was injured in the incident, the police informed.

While the recently floated party Indian Secular Front pinned the blame of the attack on the incumbent Trinamool Congress party in the state, the latter has refuted the allegations. “The house of Ajit Molla was set on fire allegedly by Trinamool Congress “goons” as he attended the rally of Abbas Siddiqui in the area on Sunday”, the ISF alleged.

Police said they have arrested two people in connection with the incident and filed a case.

On the same night, police also recovered 20 crude bombs from Chaltaberia in the Baruipur police station area of the district.

Islamic cleric Peerzada Abbas Siddiqui floats new ‘secular’ party

Ahead of the high octane Assembly polls in the state, Islamic cleric Peerzada Abbas Siddiqui had floated his new ‘secular’ political party in Kolkata, West Bengal on January 21, 2021. Both the Congress party and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), have allied with Abbas Siddiqui with the hope to re-establish its non-existential political careers in the state.

Although he had initially planned to align with Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), the plan did not materialise. He instead joined hands with the Communist Party and the Congress, which in their desperation to reinvent their sinking careers have conveniently overlooked Siddiqui’s incendiary rhetoric, fear-mongering and call for ‘divine intervention’ for the death of Hindus.

Political violence in West Bengal

West Bengal politics has always been marred with violence and as the state gears up for its high voltage Assembly elections, the spate of political violence has only been rising. In the recent past, innumerable BJP workers have fallen victim to political violence in the state. Though the Trinamool Congress has been always been in a denial mode, the fact is that the ruling Trinamool Congress led by CM Mamata Banerjee has always been steadfast in waging a war against her political opponents in the state.

West Bengal polls will be held in eight phases starting with 27th March. The results for the elections will be declared on 2nd May 2021.

Diary recovered from Sachin Vaze’s office, information of monetary transactions hint at money laundering: Reports

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has recovered a diary from Sachin Vaze’s office which contains information on financial transactions, as per reports. The monetary transactions listed in the diary hint at the money laundering angle which is now to be investigated. The NIA is likely to approach ED to probe the financial transactions further.

As per a CNN News18 report, the diary allegedly has extortion details in code words from some famous pubs and clubs in Mumbai. However, Sachin Vaze has denied having any knowledge about the diary.

A letter written by former Commissioner of Mumbai Police Param Bir Singh to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray alleged that the state Home Minister Anil Deshmukh had asked controversial cop Sachin Vaze to collect Rs. 100 crore every month from bars, restaurants, and other establishments.

Yesterday, it was reported that Param Bir Singh has moved the Supreme Court demanding an investigation into the “various corrupt practices” of Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.

Param Bir Singh’s letter revealed that, “For achieving the aforesaid target, the Hon’ble Home Minister told Shri Sachin Vaze that there were about 1750 bars and restaurants and other establishments in Mumbai and if a sum of 2-3 lakhs was collected from each of them, a monthly collection of 40-50 crores was achievable.”

In a latest update, NIA carried out search operations in a hotel room of a 5-star in Mumbai booked by Sachin Vaze using a forged Aadhaar card with a fake name. It is interesting to note that Sachin Vaze stayed at Trident Nariman Point, Mumbai from February 16 to February 20. The dates coincide with when a team of police of which Sachin was a part of, raided various establishments in Mumbai at night for various violations of licence conditions like staying open at night beyond permitted hours, among other reasons.

From 2012 to 2021: 12 tragic tales of the Hindus facing systematic persecution at the hands of the radical Islamists in Bangladesh

On March 18 we reported how hundreds of supporters of an extremist Islamist group attacked and vandalized about 80 houses of Hindus in the northeastern Sylhet division, Bangladesh. The brutal attack was planned after a young Hindu man criticized Joint-Secretary General Mawlana Mufti Mamunul Haque in a Facebook post.

A young Hindu man from Noagaon, Shalla Upazila was enraged by Mawlana Mamunul Haque’s speech and made a Facebook post criticizing it which he uploaded on Tuesday.

Upon discovering the post, Hefazat leaders staged a protest on March 16 (Tuesday) night alleging attempts to incite communal violence. Though the police had arrested the boy the same evening to bring the situation under control, yet several thousand members of Hefazat-e-Islam attacked the boy’s village with makeshift weapons on March 17 (Wednesday) morning.

Many local Hindus had to flee their homes fearing for life which gave the attackers an opportunity to ransack and loot their homes.

According to reports the fanatic mob used loudspeakers of local Mosques to incite violence and gather as many Islamist goons as they could. They incited the local Muslims to kill Hindus and rape Hindu women as a means to take vengeance for the Facebook status that criticized their leader. The followers of Hefazat-e-Islam reportedly entered the village, ransacked and looted many houses.

Though local reports suggest around 70 to 80 Hindus houses were vandalised, a local journalist claimed that at least 500 Hindu homes were vandalized and burned down. The Islamic extremists also vandalized eight temples. The attack was broadcasted on the Facebook live stream.

The next day (March 19, Friday) some miscreants attacked and damaged an idol of the Hindu goddess Kali at a temple in Bangladesh’s Uttargaon village of Thakurgaon’s Ranisankail Upazila.

Similar to Pakistan, Hindus in Bangladesh have also witnessed unbridled attacks. For decades, the Hindu community in Bangladesh have been facing systematic persecution at the hands of the radical Islamists in the country, so much so that around 11.3 million Hindus have left Bangladesh between 1964 and 2013 due to religious persecution and discrimination.

The tragic tale of the Hindus in Bangladesh which started with the 1947 genocide only to heighten during the Bangladesh Liberation War, when almost 3,000,000 Hindus were butchered in one of the biggest genocides of the century, continues until today.

In these years, umpteen number of Hindu shops have been looted, businessmen have been killed, land grabbed, temples demolished and idols vandalized. Hindu families have been forced to leave the country and girls and women have been abducted and raped.

This report throws light on 11 attacks, similar to the recent Shalla attack, on Hindus from 2012-2020. It is pertinent to note here that the following 11 cases are only a few of the thousand incidents which have occurred in the past few years. Surprisingly, in none of these incidents, trials have been carried out against the perpetrators. Instead, the Hindu victims have only been falsely accused of blasphemy and thrown behind bars.

Media too has always sugar-coated these incidents of atrocities against the Hindus orchestrated by fundamentalist groups by using the term ‘unknown miscreants’ to hide the attackers with radical Islamic intentions behind the attacks.

Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh burnt down shops and houses of Hindus in Hathazari in 2012

In 2012 and 2013, between February and November, at least 20 attacks were reported against the minority communities at Hathazari and Bashkhali in Chittagong, Kaliganj of Satkhira, Chirirbandar of Dinajpur, besides Ramu in Cox’s Bazar, Sathia of Pabna, Barisal and so on.

The assault started in Hathazari on 9 and 10 February 2012, when Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, members influenced local Muslims to attack, loot and plunder Hindu households. Eight temples, 12 shops and a number of houses were burnt down.

After the violence in Hathazari, police arrested the perpetrators but with the help of Hefajat leader Ahmed Shafi, they were let out on bail. Now, it’s been 9 years since the incident, but the Hindu victims have still not got any justice.

Fundamentalist outfit Jamaat-e-Islami behind the 2021 Fatehpur violence

The Hathazari incident was the starting point of religious terrorism against Hindus by the fundamentalist outfit Jamaat-e-Islami in Bangladesh.

In March and April, several Hindu and a few Muslim households (who had tried to help their Hindu neighbours)  at Fatepur and Chakdaha in Satkhira, were attacked. At least 12 houses were burned down to ashes and two villages were ransacked during the two-day long vandalism in the area.

On March 31, 2012, a local newspaper named Daily Drishtipat, backed by Islamist hardliners, had spread the rumour that a school play in the village had made indecent remarks about the Prophet. The local newspaper reportedly circulated complimentary copies of the paper to different houses, bazaars and mosques. Based on this rumour, Islamists attacked and looted Hindus, while the police kept looking on. The houses of almost 10 Hindu families were looted and set ablaze.

Initially, the mainstream Bangladeshi media maintained a stoic silence, completely ignoring the incident. Later, as the Hindu Students of Jagannath Hall of Dhaka University protested against the persecution, the Bangladeshi media highlighted this event.

2012 Chirirbandar violence was a fallout of an inflammatory speech given by a radical Muslim professor baying for the blood of Hindus

On 4 August 2012, a similar attack was carried out by the local fundamentalists on the vulnerable Hindus of Chirirbandar Upazila of Dinajpur District in the Division of Rangpur, Bangladesh. The Islamic extremists mercilessly burned down 50 Hindu households in an attack that was pre-planned.

The incident was a fallout of an inflammatory speech given by Professor Hamida Khatun of Chittagong Metropolitan College with the help of the Chirirbandar Upazila Parishad chairman and a Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader Aftab Ali Molla, to agitate the local Muslim against the Hindus of the area. The Muslims, in turn, hit the streets across the country in support of Jamaat-e-Islami’s and reduced houses of at least 50 Hindu families to ashes.

Islamists targetted Buddhist monasteries and Hindu temples during 2012 Ramu violence

In the same year on the midnight past 29 September, Islamic fanatics launched attacks on a predominantly Buddhist neighbourhood at Ramu in Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh. The incident occurred after an image of the desecration of the Quran appeared on a fake Facebook account registered under a Buddhist youth Uttam Kumar Barua. Accusing the youth of insulting the Quran through his social media account, Islamists targetted Buddhist monasteries and Hindu temples.

The violence later spread to Ukhia Upazila in Cox’s Bazar District and Patiya Upazila in Chittagong District, where too Buddhist monasteries and Hindu temples were destroyed.

Reports suggests that the Buddhist youth was falsely defamed as the picture was not posted by him.

According to rough estimates, 25,000 Muslims participated in the violence directed at Buddhists in Ramu, Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.

2013 Bangladesh anti-Hindu violence

On 28 February 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, the vice president of the Jamaat-e-Islami to death for war crimes committed during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. Following the death sentence, radicals of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir attacked the minority Hindus in different parts of the country.

Over 100 people, including police personnel were killed and many Hindu properties were looted, damaged and burnt to ashes. Hindu temples were also desecrated and set on fire.

According to minority community leaders, more than 50 Hindu temples and 1,500 Hindu homes were destroyed in over 20 districts during the 2013 anti-Hindu violence in the country.

Muslim mob goes on a rampage vandalising 26 Hindu households during 2013 Sathia violence

On November 2, 2013, a Muslim mob had reportedly gone on a rampage vandalising a temple and 26 Hindu households in a Hindu dominated neighbourhood in a village in Bangladesh’s Pabna district. The incident occurred over a Facebook post malign the prophet. Accusing a class 10 Hindu boy of posting a blasphemous post, defaming Prophet Mohammad, the mob attacked Rajib Shah, son of Bablu Shah’s house. Babul was mercilessly hit and kicked upon. Later, more gangs joined in to attack the predominantly Hindu village and vandalised about 26 households.

2014 Bangladesh violence against minority Hindus

In 2014, major clashes had erupted in Bangladesh after Hindus refused to boycott the 10th general elections, which was already boycotted by the primary opposition party, Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its ally Jamaat-e-Islami. Soon after the voting ended in Bangladesh, the Hindus had to face the ire of the activist of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Jamaat-Shibir. Hindu houses have been looted, vandalized and burned in several places like Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, Rangpur, Bogra, Lalmonirhat, Rajshahi, Chittagong and Jessore.

Hundreds of minority Bengali Hindus were rendered homeless in this mayhem, where as several Hindu temple were also burnt, vandalized and looted.

Two dozen Hindu households and a temple vandalised during 2014 Homna violence over fake charges of blasphemy

A fanatic Muslim mob of nearly 3,000, led by teachers and students of eight madrasas in the Upazila, attacked over two dozen Hindu households and a temple in eastern Bangladesh after rumours spread that two Hindu youths defamed Prophet Muhammad on Facebook.

Villagers had then confirmed that a call was made from the loudspeakers of a Madrasa at Rampur village, near Baghsitarampur, to launch the assault on the Hindus. Before the attacks, leaflets were distributed for several days in the madrasas claiming that two Hindu youths had slandered the prophet in a Facebook post on April 27, 2014.

2016 Nasirnagar violence was yet another display of blatant intolerance by Muslims in Bangladesh

A similar incident transpired in Bangladesh’s Nasirnagar Upazila in October 2016. This time too, a frenzied Muslim mob launched a synchronized attack on the Hindus in Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar Upazila over an alleged Facebook post. More than 300 Hindu homes and at least 19 temples were reportedly looted. Moreover, 100 people including several temple devotees were left wounded in the attack which was triggered by an allegedly defamatory social media post by a Hindu fisherman against Islam.

Muslim mob turned violent and launched an arson attack on Hindu houses during 2017 Rangpur violence in Bangladesh

In yet another incident of violence against the vulnerable Hindus in neighbouring Bangladesh, at least 30 Hindu houses at Thakurpara village in Rangpur Sadar Upazila were looted vandalised and burnt to ashes on November 10, 2017. Several Hindus were injured in the incident where a Muslim mob turned violent and launched an arson attack on these Hindu houses.

A rumour had reportedly shaped and vented the anger of the Muslims in the neighbouring villages against the Hindu community. The rumour was that one Titu Roy, originally from Thakurpara but living in Narayanganj, had put up a Facebook post defaming Prophet Muhammad a few days prior to the incident.

The violence that ensued left one dead and several others injured as police had opened fire on attackers. Protestors also torched Titu’s house. An investigation by police, however, found no blasphemous posts made by Titu, but rather from a different account with a similar name.

Rumours about a blasphemous post against Islam triggered the 2019 Borhanuddin violence against Hindus in Bangladesh

Similarly, on October 23, 2019, four people were killed and hundreds more including 10 policemen injured in Borhanuddin, following clashes between police and local Muslims demonstrating for the punishment of a youth, Biplob Chandra Baidya, who had allegedly hurt their religious sentiment on a Facebook post. According to reports, 12 Hindu homes and one temple were vandalized. One Hindu home was also set ablaze. A motorcycle was also torched.

This started when rumours spread that the Hindu boy posted a blasphemous post against Islam on Facebook. However, it was later found to be posted by two Muslims.

Muslim mob attacks, burns houses of Hindus over a Facebook post about Charlie Hebdo cartoons in Muradnagar in Bangladesh

Last year on November 2, in yet another blatant display of fanaticism and bigotry, a group of radical Islamists attacked over 10 Hindu families at Korbanpur village under Muradnagar Upazila in the Comilla district of Bangladesh.

As per reports, the Hindu households were selectively vandalised and later set on fire after a man allegedly expressed solidarity with France and defended the Charlie Hebdo cartoons in Facebook comments. The man has been identified as one Shankar Debnath. The Islamist mob burnt down the office of the local Union Parishad Chairman Bankumar Shiv, his house, Shankar’s house and that of other Hindu families in the area.

The video of the incident had gone viral on social media, in which a violent Islamist mob, wearing skull caps and brandishing sticks, logs and stones, could be seen vandalising the houses of Hindu families.

The Chinese Embassy in Paris calls French researcher ‘little rascal’, France summons envoy to protest

The foreign ministry of France has summoned China’s ambassador over several issues, including repeated threats and insults towards French lawmakers and a researcher. The Chinese embassy had called a Paris-based researcher Antoine Bondaz, “petite frappe”, which means little rascal or a thug in a tweet.

The Chinese Embassy had denounced Antoine Bondaz’s criticism of China’s pressure on French lawmakers over their upcoming visit to Taiwan.

Jean-Yves Le Drian, Foreign Minister of France, wrote on Twitter, “The words of the Chinese Embassy in France and the actions against European elected officials, researchers and diplomats are inadmissible. He further said that he has requested the Chinese ambassador to be summoned to remind him firmly of these messages.

The French Foreign Ministry also protested against the decision made by China to sanction several European nationals, including Raphael Glucksmann, a member of the European Parliament. The ministry said, “It is not by attacking academic freedom, freedom of expression and fundamental democratic freedoms that China will respond to the legitimate concerns of the European Union.”

Sanctions against Chinese officials

On March 22, The United States, the European Union, Britain and Canada imposed sanctions on Chinese officials. It was the first such coordinated Western action against China under the newly elected US President Joe Biden.

In a reply, China said that the sanctions were imposed as a retaliation to the sanctions imposed by the EU on senior Chinese officials on the pretext of human rights abuse in Xinjiang. The embassy also added that the EU sanctions were based on misinformation and lies. It claimed that the EU is interfering in the internal affairs of China. Further, the embassy said that the ambassador would go to the foreign ministry on March 23 to discuss the sanctions imposed on the EU and questions linked to Taiwan.

China’s mouthpiece Global Times defended the embassy over the derogatory comment

On March 22, in an op-ed, China’s mouthpiece news agency Global Times had defended the embassy over the derogatory tweet towards the researcher. It said that in China, people believe that they should never ask others to do something they don’t want, and Bondaz’s remarks would make anyone in China call him an “academic rascal”.

It further added that the continuous attack on China forced the Chinese embassy to respond. It said, “After facing so much nonsense, the Chinese Embassy responded in French on Twitter with “petite frappe,” which means “little rascal”, and then has been hit by more slanders and attacks.”
