Russia releases statement, could ban Twitter, Facebook and YouTube over arbitrary censorship: Details

Russia is contemplating a ban on internet-based platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube over arbitrary censorship exercised by the social media behemoths. Russian legislators this week moved a step closer in this direction with the passage of draft legislation that would empower the regulators to block social networking and content-sharing websites if they are found randomly censoring content posted by Russian citizens.

A statement was released by the Russian parliament, stating that the authorities would have the power to block internet-based platforms upon finding them engaging in limiting information based on language as well as nationality.

The lower house of the Russian parliament, State Duma, also added that the websites that are found to be discriminating against Russian media’s content might also face a ban. The decision comes in the wake of complaints filed by many Russian media organisations this year, stating that their accounts were being censored by Facebook, YouTube and Twitter, all of which are based out of the United States.

Social Media platforms introduced labels to identify suspicious content and media outlets affiliated to govts

It is noteworthy to mention that these social media tech-giants had introduced labels to identify media outlets affiliated to their respective governments. This was done ahead of the US Presidential elections in November 2020. However, the social media platforms’ random labelling of content and media houses had stirred a massive outrage, with many accusing the tech giants of exhibiting bias and favouritism.

Following the passage of the draft legislation in the lower house, it would be presented in the upper house, where it would need to be passed. Once it passes through the upper house and Rusian President Vladimir Putin signs it, the bill would effectively turn into a law.

Of late, social media websites have been censoring and publishing content as per their whims and fancies. Last week, Kremlin levied a fine on Google because the search engine giant did not pull down online content that was banned under Russian law. In February this year, a court in Moscow fined Twitter and Facebook for not abiding by a Russian law requiring them to store Russian citizens’ user data inside the country.

Interference by Social media platforms in India’s digital space

In India, too, social media platforms have indulged in randomly labelling and limiting the content that goes on their websites. Recently, Twitter inexplicably censored a tweet posted by Amit Malviya, the IT cell head of the ruling party of India.

The backstory to this is rather interesting. Rahul Gandhi, the leader of Congress party had shared an image with an insinuation that the police was beating up an old farmer. While Khalistani elements have taken over the farmer protests, the opposition parties are trying to prove that the protest is still spearheaded by farmers. That apart, in this exact moment where this picture was captured, the old farmer was not being beaten up by the police.

Twitter, instead of flagging the original picture with misleading claims, flagged a ‘fact-check’ video by Amit Malviya and added the label that read ‘manipulated media’.

Madhya Pradesh: Muslim mob pelts stones at Ramnidhi Sangrahan rally in Ujjain, 10 people injured and several vehicles damaged

A violent Muslim mob targeted Hindu groups and pelted stones at them for carrying out yatra near Begumbagh in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh on Friday evening.

According to the reports, several Hindus had taken out a Ramnidhi Sangrahan rally in Ujjain to collect donations for the Ram Mandir constructions at Ayodhya. The rally was scheduled to start from the tower area and end at Bharat Mata Mandir in Mahakal area.

As the rally reached the Muslim-dominated area of Begumbagh, a mob targeted the rally and pelted stones at them from the rooftops. The Hindu activists saw themselves surrounded in heavy stone pelting and escaped towards safety. However, they left their vehicles on the spot.

The video of the mob violence unleashed by the mob has gone viral on the internet. In the video, one can see how small children, women joined the men to pelt stones at the Ramnidhi Sangrahan rally on Friday.

Following the intense stone pelting at the rally, more than 10 people got severely injured and reported damages to their vehicles. The mob also attacked and vandalised the vehicles that were parked.

As soon as the incident was reported to the police, they reached the spot and controlled the situation. DM Ashish Singh and SP Satyendra Shukla also reached the spot. The district magistrate has termed the dispute as a clash as a case of quarrel. He said that the police has handled the situation and further action is being taken to maintain law and order. The police have also arrested an accused.

‘Is Maharashtra government running COVID-19 centres to benefit contractors’, asks Kirit Somaiya

0

BJP leader Kirit Somaiya has slammed the Maha Vikas Aghadi government raising aspersions on the COVID-19 centres operating in Mumbai. Following a visit to one such COVID-19 centres in Mumbai’s Dombivali, Somaiya has alleged that the contractor tasked with running the medical facility exploited nurses, ward boys and patients admitted in the hospital.

Somaiya, along with MLA Ravindra Chavan, had paid a visit to Dombivli Gymkhana COVID Center yesterday. He alleged that more than two dozen ward boys, nurses and other employees at the medical facility confided him of being exploited by the contractor. Somaiya stated that they confessed that they were not paid their salaries for August, September and October. He also alleged that their signatures were taken on receipts of Rs 15,000 but they were only paid Rs 10,000.

Somaiya visited Dombivali COVID-19 facility after workers threatened to go on strike

Somaiya had visited the medical facility after workers at the Dombivali COVID-19 centre had called for a strike on December 23. Taking cognisance of the matter, Somaiya visited the COVID-19 Centre to understand the grievances of the employees. During his visit to the centre, Somaiya also checked on the patients who were admitted at the facility.

“Some nurses and wardboys travel a long distance to come here for work. They were not paid salary for the month of November. When they ask contractor for their salaries, the contractor threatens them with removing them from the job,” a nurse reportedly complained.

After listening to the complaints raised by the workers, Somaiya had a discussion with the health officials of the corporation. He demanded the salaries of the employees be credited immediately to their bank accounts and asked for a special audit of the contractor’s work and finances.

Kirit Somaiya alleges Maha Vikas Aghadi government for the welfare of the contractors

Kirit Somiaya also wondered if the COVID-19 centres in the state were being opened up by the Maha Vikas Aghadi government for the sole purpose of helping the contractors.

“When the number of coronavirus patients was high in the state, it was necessary to set up COVID-19 centres. However, when the number is on the wane, why did Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray inaugurate two COVID-19 centres in Thane? What’s the logic behind this? Is Thackeray government doing so for helping the contractors?” Somaiya asked.

Non-payment of salaries a recurrent theme in Maharashtra under Maha Vikas Aghadi government

Ever since the coronavirus-induced lockdown was imposed in the country, the non-payment of salaries of employees has been a recurrent theme in Maha Vikas Aghadi governed Maharashtra. There have been several cases where the employees have revolted for not being given their due salaries. Some of them have even taken the extreme step of giving up their lives after buckling under an insurmountable financial crisis.

Recently, two ST workers had committed suicide for non-payment of dues and reduction in salaries. Earlier in August, an ST employee of the Maharashtra government had committed suicide for over non-payment of salary for over two months. Amol Mali, the ST worker, after being in depression for not receiving his salary for the period of the last two months, had decided to end his life.

However, the concerns raised by the government employees have fallen on deaf ears, with the Maharashtra government showing more attentions in punishing the dissenting voices such as Sameet Thakkar, Sunaina Holey, Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami and actor Kangana Ranaut instead of alleviating the problems besetting the poor employees.

It is worth noting that while the government struggled to pay the salaries to the employees, it did not shy away from authorising the purchase of vehicles for its ministers. The approval from the Uddhav Thackeray government came at a time when the Maharashtra Treasury was in a bad shape in the wake of coronavirus induced lockdown in the state. However, disregarding the acute financial crisis suffered by thousands of government employees, whose salaries were either deferred or reduced, Uddhav Thackeray government sanctioned the purchase of 6 new luxury vehicles for their ministers.

FIR filed against advocate Mehmood Pracha for not cooperating and misbehaving with officials during raids at his office

0

An FIR has been registered against Supreme Court advocate Mehmood Pracha for allegedly misbehaving with the police personnel and obstructing the raids conducted by the Delhi police at his office on Thursday.

The FIR has been filed by the Counter Intelligence Unit of Delhi Police Special Cell under sections 186, 353 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code at Nizamuddin police station allegedly for obstructing a public servant from discharging public duty using criminal force. An investigation is being conducted in the matter.

Pracha requested court-monitored probe

Pracha had moved the Patiala House Court in Delhi yesterday after raids were conducted at his office. Pracha requested the court to preserve the footage of the raids. He said that the police have refused to share with him the copy of the footage. Alleging that the investigating officer threatened him that false cases will be filed against him, Pracha requested the investigation to be court-monitored. He filed an application under section 156(3) of the Code of Criminal Procedure seeking continuous monitoring of the case.

The court had directed the Delhi police to file a response by December 27. It directed the investigating officer to be present in the court with the footage of the raid on the next hearing of the matter.

An FIR was filed against Pracha for inciting communal hatred

An FIR was filed against Pracha and Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Jawad in July this year after the two announced in a press conference that they would be setting up a camp in Lucknow to teach Muslims and Dalits about the ‘right to self-defence’ and how to apply for a firearm licence. Despite the FIR, Pracha was seen holding a camp inside a Lucknow Mosque where he was training Muslims about how to fill our licences and acquire firearms.

Nashville explosion: The curious case of a Youtube channel that uploaded a video of the blast

Hours after a recreational vehicle (RV) exploded in downtown Nashville in Tennessee on the morning of Christmas, an alleged video of the explosion has mysteriously surfaced on social media.

The video titled, ‘Nashville Explosion’ was uploaded on Friday wherein the visuals of the explosion was captured by a CCTV camera. “This area must be evacuated now. This area must be evacuated now. If you can hear this message, evacuate now. If you can hear this message, evacuate now. If you can hear this message, evacuate now,” the automated female voice repeated prior to the explosion. The attack, which injured 3 people, has created a state of panic among the residents of the area.

Video of the Nashville explosion (Courtesy: Youtube/ S McG)

Ford Fisher, the Editor of News2Share, took to Twitter to trace the origins of the viral explosion video, the details of which has now been sent to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for further probe into the incident. He revealed that the contentious video was originally uploaded on Youtube by an account named ‘S McG’. “The account that posted it is called “S McG” and has no bio or info, and has never posted until today since joining in 2014,” he stated.

Fisher pointed out that the same video clip was first uploaded on Twitter by an account named ‘TA’ that joined the microblogging platform only this month. It had not posted any tweet until the alleged video clip of the Nashville explosion. “The video turns black and white following the explosion in both uploads,” Fisher noted in his tweet.

The journalist emphasised how the Youtube channel, where the video was first uploaded bore an uncanny resemblance with another channel named ‘S Mc G’, which was created in April this year and had no bio. “The five videos posted on it, posted over the course of three weeks, are all very bizarre,” Fisher emphasised.

Fisher added the video was posted twice by the said Youtube channel. “It montages COVID-19 announcements and reports over music, and then turns to black and white images of destruction, before a clip I don’t know how to describe,” he tweeted.

In one such video clip, the uploader added bizarre music to announcements of Coronavirus pandemic but later turned the video morbid through depictions of buildings (in black and white) marking the end of civilisation. The video ended on a horrifying note with someone growling, amidst a dense forest, as if crying for help. “K bye”, the caption read in the end.

Fisher said that in another video posted on October 1, the video showed a static image of the term “Apocalypse”, which was being searched on “DuckDuckGo” with background music of Hans Zimmer’s “Dream Is Collapsing” track from the movie, ‘Inception’.

The journalist mentioned that the two other videos, uploaded on the channel are screen-captured clips of US President Trump with the background of Kanye West’s ‘Black Skinhead’ track. He emphasised, “The videos are identical other than that one has twenty seconds of other music afterwards.”

Ford Fisher concluded, “I want to be very clear: I have no idea who “S McG” is or whether they’re the same person as “S Mc G”, and even if so, whether that person was involved in this incident.” He also added that the video had been sent to the law enforcement authorities at FBI.

Nashville explosion incident

As per reports, the cops were responding to reports of gunshots when the RV put out a recorded audio message wherein it warned that a bomb would explode in 15 minutes on Friday morning. The Nashville police swiftly swung into action and evacuated the buildings in the vicinity before the explosion. Citing federal sources, CNN reported that there were no ‘credible threats’ in the Nashville area that would point towards a planned attack on Christmas.

According to Nashville Police Chief John Drake, the police department did not receive any threats, prior to the explosion. He, however, conceded that the attack was ‘intentional’ and that nothing much is known about the motive behind the incident. The cops have also recovered tissue from the explosion site and are now confirming whether there was someone in the RV.

While speaking about the incident, Mayor John Cooper said, “This morning’s attack on our community was intended to create chaos and fear in this season of peace and hope. But Nashvillians have proven time and time again that the spirit of our city cannot be broken.” At the same time, incumbent President Donald Trump, President-elect Joe Biden and Acting Attorney General Jeff Rosen have been briefed about the incident.

Bengal elections can finish career of Prashant Kishore, and he is desperate, can his media friends save him?

If recent political developments are anything to go by, West Bengal elections would prove to be a potboiler, with several careers and dreams at stake. On the one hand, BJP appears confident of clinching a victory and scoring a whopping 200 in the state, which, given its electoral history in the state, would be nothing short of historic. TMC, on the other hand, is confident of retaining its majority in the state, bolstered by the inexplicable politics of Mamata Banerjee and ‘bahari’ Prashant Kishor.

While both parties appear confident on the outside, if one looks at the recent exodus of leaders from TMC, the silent disgruntlement on ground, the BJP inroads in Lok Sabha elections and the recent spunk the state leadership has displayed, the odds certainly seem to be in BJP’s favour. With the odds being in BJP’s favour, this becomes a make-or-break election not just for Mamata Banerjee but some others as well who have positioned themselves as electoral masterminds, namely, Prashant Kishor.

Prashant Kishor rose to fame after he ‘managed’ 2014 Lok Sabha elections for BJP and PM Narendra Modi. Riding on the Modi wave, Kishor positioned himself, with help from a friendly media, of course, as one who can make or break political fortunes. However, he has had a string of failures ever since. He couldn’t sell Rahul Gandhi to the people of India, failed with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, failed in states like Uttar Pradesh.

With people catching on to the fact that Kishor simply rose to fame because he managed to sell a personality that already had a cult around it and failed miserably when handed a bad product, West Bengal elections, where he is managing the electoral fortunes of TMC, might prove to be one that defines his career.

When political fortunes begin to seem doubtful, the media could prove to be a friend-in-need, especially for those who have passage to the Lutyens corridor.

Give the scenario, two articles published today, almost at the same time, raised eyebrows and questions about whether we are seeing the media jump into action in an attempt to salvage whatever is left of the political career of Prashant Kishor.

One article was published on the Hindustan Times and penned by Barkha Dutt, and the other was published on The Economic Times.

The article on ET claimed in its headline that as BJP was raising its Bengal pitch, TMC was working out its strategy in 9 big districts. The one by Barkha Dutt read, “How the TMC is fighting the BJP juggernaut in Bengal”.

Online, many started to notice similarities in the two articles written and wondered if these articles were planted to save Mamata and Kishor’s falling fortunes.

While the allegations of the two articles being planted by Prashant Kishor may be true (or untrue), it is, nonetheless, important to evaluate the merits of the arguments made in these rather similar articles to understand what we might be looking at going into the 2021 Bengal Assembly elections.

In the two articles, one by Barkha Dutt and one by Economic Times, essentially there are 5 points which have been raised to prove that Mamata Banerjee has not lost her grip over Bengal and that Prashant Kishor continues to be at the top of his game. Many of these points are almost identical.

1. BJP made inroads in Bengal because Mamata Banerjee “made the mistake of being complacent and dismissive about the BJP, both organisationally and individually” – Project Messiah Prashant Kishor in Bengal

Barkha Dutt in her Hindustan Times article says, “The Bengal chief minister, Mamata Banerjee had, in the last elections, to borrow the words of an aide, “made the mistake of being complacent and dismissive about the BJP, both organisationally and individually.” The TMC is determined to not make those mistakes again”.

Such proclamations beg the question what is the evidence to prove that BJP made inroads because of Mamata’s complacency and not because there was a genuine seedling of change being planted? Barkha Dutt provides none, except agreeing with an unnamed aide of Mamata Banerjee (presumably, Prashant Kishor).

There are two things at play here.

Firstly, if Barkha Dutt is indeed quoting Prashant Kishor, the statement made in the article (which Barkha seems to agree with) clearly hints at image management for Kishor. The statement essentially means that in the earlier election, Mamata became complacent but now that Prashant Kishor has come to the rescue, all is going to be well and the BJP will be defeated rather seamlessly.

Secondly, it also seems to suggest that BJP made inroads not because there were seeds of change laid, but because of the incompetence of Mamata Banerjee herself. That theory is in itself rather untested since the undertones of BJP making serious inroads during Lok Sabha elections were always palpable.

One recalls the ‘Chup Chaap Kamal Chhaap’ slogan given by BJP and the promise by Amit Shah to win over 20 seats in Bengal.

Thus, this rhetorical sentence makes no sense to gauge the ground sentiment, except perhaps, in Barkha Dutt’s hopeful mind.

2. The Muslim population and vote share percentage argument – Given by both Barkha Dutt in HT and Economic Times

The article by Barkha Dutt makes the following argument:

“There are several reasons why Mamata Banerjee’s party believes it will prove to be the bulwark against the Modi juggernaut in the east. The first is what Kishor calls “the denominator effect.” Given that 30% of Bengal’s voters are Muslim, the TMC argues that the BJP is playing for only 70% of the voter base while the TMC is courting a larger base of 100%. In a bipolar contest, the BJP, thus needs a way higher strike rate than than the TMC, something like 65% of that 70% voter pool, to deliver a win. Yes, in 2017, the BJP did handsomely win Uttar Pradesh, another state with a sizable minority population. But this could be because of the triangular nature of the contest there where a nearly 40% vote share enabled a BJP win. That same percentage would not deliver Bengal to the BJP“.

The article in the Economic Times makes a similar argument.

It cites 9 such districts that have a strong Muslim population and says the following:

“For the BJP to win more than 200 seats, it will have to considerably improve its Lok Sabha performance in the state, where it won 18 seats and restricted the TMC to 22 seats. Some of the districts such as 24 Parganas and Murshidabad have around 80 assembly seats that can compensate for the losses of the TMC in other parts of the state,” said a TMC member, who did not wish to be identified. The person said historically West Bengal has been won by those who won South Bengal, particularly the districts of Medinipur and 24 Parganas, where the BJP is just building its strength. Also, West Bengal has more Muslim voters than, say, Bihar or Uttar Pradesh, at almost 30 per cent, which the TMC believes will play a pivotal role in its continued success in the state.

So first off the bat, let us address the percentage of Muslim population in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

TMC’s ‘unnamed leaders’ seem to claim that in Bengal, the Muslim population is about 30% which is far more than the 18% in Uttar Pradesh. So, in Bengal, BJP will be vying for 70% votes, whereas TMC would be vying for 100% (both Hindus and Muslims). Be that as it may, in the 2019 General elections, it is to be kept in mind that while TMC won 43.69% of the votes, BJP won 40.64%. How did that translate into assembly segments? Well, while BJP won 122 assembly segments, TMC won 163.

With the logic of both articles claiming that BJP’s chances are bleak due to the higher Muslim population, the whopping 40.64% votes that BJP received in 2019 does not really prove their theory.

Furthermore, the argument is that in Uttar Pradesh, it was a triangular fight and hence, BJP would win the state with a 40% voteshare, however, in Bengal that would not be possible.

Here, the TMC ‘source’ of Barkha and ET are clearly trying to discredit the presence of AIMIM. While AIMIM is certainly not as strong as SP or BSP in Uttar Pradesh, AIMIM will certainly be a factor in Bengal elections. One recalls the comments by Mamata against Owaisi and it becomes amply clear how important a role he might play in the elections. Essentially, the 30% Muslim vote bank that TMC is banking on could very well be divided to a large extent between TMC and AIMIM.

The TMC is clearly trying to tell its voters that AIMIM is not a factor in Bengal, when it clearly is. Further, considering that BJP already bagged 40.64% voteshare in 2019, how far would a 44% voteshare really be, especially with leaders like Suvendu Adhikari shifting to BJP? Perhaps not too far, which could essentially translate into a comfortable victory for the BJP.

It is also pertinent to analyse the specific 9 districts mentioned by ET in its article. South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, Nadia, Howrah, Burdwan, East and West Medinipur are the 9 seats that ET is peddling as TMC strongholds, considering there is a sizeable Muslim population in these areas.

It is important to note here why these constituencies are being mentioned – Suvendu Adhikari.

Once considered to be a close aide of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the two-time former MP retains a lot of clout in the party and is believed to have sway in as many as 86 Assembly seats in Purulia, Murshidabad, Malda, West Midnapore, Jhargram, East Midnapore, Bankura and in Bishnupur. Suvendu’s departure will, in all likelihood, prove fateful for West Bengal’s ruling dispensation in 2021 assembly polls, as his exit may change the mathematics of these 86 assembly seats, where he is believed to be an excellent taskmaster in booth management.

The Muslim population in several constituencies where Adhikari holds sway is rather high. Midnapore is an area where several BJP workers have been found mysteriously hanging, with BJP pointing towards TMC as the culprit. It has about a 15% Muslim population in East and West Midnapore combined. In Birbhhum, for example, the Muslim population is almost 40%. In Purulia, the Muslim population is almost 30%. In other areas where his posters had come up, sans TMC, the Muslim population is rather high as well. In Malda, the Muslim population is over 51%. In Murshidabad, it’s over 66%. In Nadia, its almost 30%.

With such high Muslim populations, the appeal of Shuvendu Adhikari is still massively high due to his lineage and role in the people’s movement of Nandigram. In addition to him being one of the most popular mass leaders of TMC in the Midnapore Jangal Mahal region, it is to be noted that Subhendu is a member of the powerful Adhikari family of the East Midnapore district.

It is no coincidence that most of the 9 districts that TMC wishes to peddle as its stronghold has substantial allegiance to Suvendu Adhikari who has now joined BJP and vowed to defeat TMC. Thus, it clearly seems like both articles seem to be aimed far more at countering the Suvendu Adhikari factor that truly analyse how Bengal elections might unfold.

3. Difficult to get 45% votes with 100% support of one community – an argument made by both articles

While we have already discussed this in part above, it becomes important to qualify this statement categorically. BJP, with the supposed support of only 1 community (Hindus) got 40.64% voteshare in 2019 elections. According to the pundits being quoted by TMC, if it treads the same path, it will be impossible for BJP to move from 40.64% to 44-45% in 2021 Assembly Elections when BJP has firstly gone hammer and tongs and, it has now the support of leaders like Suvendu Adhikari.

This, with elements like Owaisi and the Congress+Left alliance making a marginal dent at least in the Muslim vote bank of TMC. This argument by TMC (made through Barkha and ET) makes remarkably paltry sense, statistically and logically.

Fact remains that BJP is a strong contender and Prashant Kishor, the political strategist, seems to be at a loss when caste is not a factor in an election.

In this context, it is also pertinent to mention that the Lok Sabha election results indicate that the BJP managed to achieve the kind of Hindu vote consolidation hitherto unseen in Indian politics. If it manages to replicate the same in a few more Lok Sabha constituencies (which contains multiple Assembly constituencies) in the Assembly Elections, it will essentially be game over for the TMC.

4. To contend with anger against the party in Bengal, Prashant Kishor has made organisational changes – an argument made by both articles

What is the first thing that comes to mind when one reads this statement? Prashant Batman Kishor to the rescue? Yes. And perhaps, that is exactly how it was meant to sound. After the mass exodus of 10 MLAs from TMC to the BJP and an expected exodus of many more, the message that all was well internally had to be given, and what better way than ‘independent analysis’?

However, here is the clincher.

Only days earlier, several leaders had revolted against Prashant Kishor.

“This is no longer Didi’s party. She is aloof. That is why Didi’s men are no longer required. If you have to stay, you have to be a ‘yes man’ or else, leave,” Mihir Goswami had written.

Expressing anguish for not receiving a phone call from Banerjee in six weeks, he wrote, “My party is no longer in the hands of my leader. This can no longer be my party.”

Interestingly, while the two ‘independent analyses’ paint the induction of “young leaders” by Prashant Kishore as a plus, the rebellion in the party was exactly because of it. The reshuffle in July 2020 has not gone down well with many old timers in the party who actually hold the key to electoral fortunes for the TMC.

Here is an excerpt from a Hindustan Times article:

Another senior TMC leader, Jadadish Chandra Barma Basunia, the legislator from Sitai constituency in Cooch Behar, has spoken in support of Goswami and questioned internal changes being made at the recommendation of Kishor and his team.

“Responsibilities are being given to leaders who helped the BJP in the last election. This will severely affect the TMC’s prospects in 2021. Goswami is being insulted by some people in the party. There is a conspiracy to throw him out. He is a senior and experienced leader,” said Basunia. Members from Kishor’s team met him on Tuesday.

In Murshidabad district, TMC legislator from Hariharpara, Niamot Sheikh openly challenged Kishor’s authority at a rally on Sunday. “Prashant Kishor is the cause of all trouble. Suvendu Adhikari revived the party in Murshidabad. And now leaders who talk to him are facing action,” Sheikh said at the rally.

It was earlier this year that reportedly, Abhishek Banerjee and Prashant Kishore had tried to iron out the differences within the party.

Here, in these two opeds, the context is obviously not given as it tries its best to paint the reshuffle by Prashant Kishor a boon that will help TMC win, while it was a step that has actually not only contributed to the exodus but may end up costing TMC a large chunk of votes – and even a Muslim leader has expressed his disgust.

5. Campaigns like ‘Didi ke Bolo’. ‘Duare Sarkar’, pro-Mamata sentiment and absence of local face for BJP

None of these points really make sense. The opeds argue that campaigns like Didi Ke Bolo and Duare Sarkar could clinch sizeable votes for TMC. However, it obviously forgets the success of slogans like ‘Chup Chap Kamal Chaap’ and the fact that while these two schemes look excellent on paper, Mamata Banerjee has refused to enrol in schemes that would help farmers of West Bengal and even bungled up the compensation measures after cyclone Amphan.

In fact, in June, one recalls how the son of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) member of Dharmapukuria Panchayat in Bangaon was thrashed by locals with brooms and sticks. The incident took place in the Sukpukur area where locals attacked the house of the TMC leader, following allegations of corruption in the disbursement of relief funds for Cyclone Amphan.

Protestors had alleged that even though the house of Gopal Dey did not suffer any damage, yet he was a beneficiary of the relief fund. They demanded that the TMC member return the money or pay compensation to all the families in the village. The protestors, comprising mostly of women, informed that Uttam was thrashed after they saw him beating his own mother.

TMC leader and panchayat member Swapan Kumar Ghatu was gheraoed by residents of Kailashpur village in South 24 Paraganas and held hostage at a local school playground for illegally receiving compensation, originally meant for the victims of Cyclone Amphan. The locals had alleged that the TMC politician had siphoned off relief funds by listing his family members as beneficiaries. Later talking to media, Swapan Kumar Ghatu conceded that there were anomalies in compensation distribution. He said that there were some mistakes in preparing the list of beneficiaries, and he apologised for the same.

In July, TMC had reportedly suspended 18 of its panchayat members in Nandigram in East Midnapore district for their involvement in corruption in the disbursement of cyclone Amphan relief funds and 200 leaders were issued show-cause notices. The sheer magnitude of the corruption was massive.

All of this, and so much more, was not even taken into consideration by Barkha Dutt while peddling her ‘analysis’ on Bengal elections and neither was it taken into consideration by ET.

The argument that Mamata Banerjee has still held on to her cult status also becomes interesting considering that if the argument was true, BJP would not bag over 40% voteshare in Lok Sabha elections. Further, it may as well be possible that BJP would make this a battle between Mamata and Amit Shah, rather than choose a local face, or if it does, it would certainly not make the name public so early in the game.

In all, the arguments put forth by either of the op-eds make absolutely no sense and fail to give even a remotely accurate picture of the ground realities of Bengal. What it does rather well is painted Prashant Kishor as a messiah. Whether that was the sole aim of these articles, only their writers could truly confirm.

Babri petitioner Iqbal Ansari trashes Dhannipur Mosque design, doesn’t want it to be known by Babar’s name

0

Iqbal Ansari, who was a petitioner in the Ram Janmbhoomi case, has disapproved of the design of the mosque to be constructed on the land allotted by the state government in Dhannipur following the Supreme Court’s order in Ram Janmbhoomi case. Ansari said that the proposed design of the mosque is inspired by foreign architecture. He said that the mosque should be made as per Indian architecture.

Babar was not our Messiah: Iqbal Ansari

Iqbal Ansari said that mosque is not meant for show-off and that it should be simple. He added that the primary purpose of a mosque is to read namaz. He is also disappointed with the Mosque Trust for neglecting him. He said that the case was fought in the Supreme Court for 70 years and yet, no party to the case is being consulted for anything. Opposing the idea of naming the mosque after Babar, Iqbal Ansari said that the mosque should not be known by the name of Babar because he was not the Messiah of the Muslims of the country.

Disagreements over the design of Masjid

The Convener of Babri Masjid Action Committee (BMAC) and All India Muslim Personal Law Board executive member, Zafaryab Jilani had also expressed displeasure over the design of the mosque. He said that the recently released blueprint of the mosque was against the Shariat. He added that as per the Waqf Act, mosques and land for mosques could not be bartered, making the proposed mosque against the Act.

The issue was first raised in October during the meeting of All India Muslim Personal Law Board’s executive committee wherein Asaduddin Owaisi had said the building the mosque on an alternate land was against the Waqf Act.

The blueprint of the mosque does not have a dome

The blueprint of the proposed mosque does not have a dome. Apart from the mosque, the premises will have a museum, a library, a hospital and a community kitchen. After vandalising Reliance Jio towers, Punjab ‘farmers’ ransack venues screening PM’s interaction with farmers, BJP workers injured

After hijacking the border areas of the national capital, the so-called farmers, who have been protesting against the Modi government’s three new farm laws, have started stirring violence in many parts of the country. After vandalising several Reliance Jio towers in Punjab and almost crushing policemen under their tractors in Uttrakhand, reports have now emerged that at least four venues in Punjab, where screening of PM Narendra Modi’s interaction with farmers was being held, was ransacked by ‘farmers’ Friday.

According to a report by The Indian Express, Punjab’s Bathinda, Kotkapura, Fazilka and Jalandhar, where BJP leaders had organised the live screening of the event faced acts of vandalism and disruption by protesting ‘farmers’. Interestingly, in most of these venues, members of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) were leading the protest.

‘Farmers’ led by BKU resort to vandalism in Bhatinda, Punjab

The BJP event in Bathinda’s Ram Chandra Market on Amrik Singh road had to be wrapped up within 15 minutes of its start as agitating farmers barged into the venue raising slogans and ransacked the place leaving at least five party workers injured. BJP district president Vinod Kumar Binta said that the farmers threw the chairs and damaged picture of the former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, to celebrate whose birth anniversary the event was organised and also to listen to the PM live.

In the video footage of the incident, protesters were seen breaking chairs, throwing BJP flags and raising slogans like ‘Modi Sarkar Murdabad’, ‘Kale Kanoon Radd Karo’.

Binta said: “We had erected a tent near my office in Ram Chandra Market. We had to celebrate the birth anniversary of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee and also to listen to the PM live. We had just started the programme when farmers came inside the tent and started raising slogans against us, they threw the chairs and even damaged picture of the former PM. We had no choice but to leave the venue. In a democracy, if they have the right to protest, even we have the right to organise any programme in a peaceful manner. I along with other BJP leaders went to the SSP Bathinda and apprised him of the matter. But we haven’t submitted a written complaint yet.”

The district president informed that the BJP legal cell co-convener Ravinder Gupta was among those who sustained injuries. Gupta, he said, got 22 stitches on the leg. Police rushed to the spot and resorted to mild lathi-charge to control the situation, BJP leaders said.

While police had erected a barricade on the road leading to the venue, members of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan) and Dodhi (milkmen) Union, Bathinda unit, came in large numbers at the spot and removed the barricades, raised slogans and protested.

So-called farmers stage protests in Jalandhar, Punjab

In Jalandhar, members from BKU (Rajewal) staged protested in three places in the city including outside the house of former Punjab Minister Manoranjan Kalia. The union also gheraoed the main office of the party. As they broke barricades, the police had to resort to mild force, in turn injuring few ‘farmers’.

Kotkapura

In Kotkapura in Faridkot district, it was again the BKU (Ugrahan) members who resorted to sloganeering and vandalism at the event organised at in the city’s Aggarwal Dharamshala. Sunita Garg, general secretary of Punjab BJP, had organised the programme, along with others had to be taken out of the venue by the police after the place was taken over by the members of BKU.

Police used mild force to disperse the protesters as well. Garg said, “Why can’t we peacefully pay tributes to the former PM Atal Bihar Vajpayee and also to listen to our PM.”

Speaking about the protest, Sunita Garg said: ”They were not the farmers but SAD, Congress and AAP workers holding union flags. They are trying to create unrest in Punjab due to which people have forgotten the real issues like deaths due to illicit liquor, mining mafia etc. For the past 3 months dharna has been organised outside my house as well. As we knew that they were SAD, Congress workers, we burnt effigies of Sukhbir Badal and Capt Amarinder Singh near my house to lodge our protest.”

Balck flag shown by ‘farmers’ to BJP leaders in Fazilka, Punjab

In Fazilka, a programme to celebrate the birth anniversary of the former PM Vajpayee was organised at Shteerwala village. Surjit Kumar Jyani, chairperson of BJP’s 8-member panel was invited for the event. He was to address the farmers over their grievances but instead, he was shown black flags by the farmers. The protesters even argued with Jyani over farm laws.

BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh said: “Complete anarchy is prevailing in Punjab where law and order are in the hands of goons and police have become a silent and helpless onlooker.”

BKU and its double-standards

People who are unversed would be rather shocked to know that BKU, which is now leading the protests against the farm laws had demanded the same things as provided under the laws by the Modi government, which are actually meant to benefit the Indian farmers. The new farm laws, inter alia, liberate the farmers from the clutches of middlemen (Arhityas) and allow them to sell the produce to the buyer of their choice outside the APMC (Agricultural Produce Market Committees Act) markets at fair prices.

Amusingly, in 2019, the BKU had supported the then Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, late Ram Vilas Paswan after he demanded Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh to do away with Arhitya system and ensure direct payment to farmers as is provided under the new farm laws.

The farmers’ union had welcomed the demand for eliminating commission agents who burdened farmers with huge debts and the decision to introduce direct online transactions. A year later, they want the middlemen system restored.

The Kisan manifesto prepared by KCC in 2019 asked for abolishment of APMC and Essential Commodities Act. However, when the current farm laws made provisions ending the monopoly of APMCs, offering farmers the freedom to sell their produce anywhere, the BKU has done a backflip.

Delhi HC stays eviction orders issued to artists for overstaying in government accommodation

The Delhi High Court on Friday stayed the central government’s eviction order against three artists, including two Padmashri awardees, asking them to vacate the accommodation provided to them for their contribution in the field of art.

According to the reports, a petition was filed by artists – Bharati Shivaji, V Jayarama Rao and Banasri Rao, stating that they were senior citizens, who did not have any alternate accommodation in Delhi except for the government accommodation which was given to them in 1987.

Hearing the petition filed by the aggrieved petitioners, a Bench of Justice Navin Chawla put a stay on the said eviction notice and sought response from the Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

“There shall be a stay on the operation of the impugned order dated October 9, 2020, till the next date of hearing. This order shall, however, not prevent the respondents to consider the representation of the petitioners and communicate the decision thereon to the petitioners,” the court said. The matter will be heard again on January 22.

Petitioners ask the govt to formulate policy to allow them to stay at govt accommodation

The petitioners also sought a direction to the respondents to formulate/frame policy or guidelines for permitting the artists to continue to retain their accommodation for lifetime upon payment of a periodic nominal licence fee.

They also said, unlike other professionals, they do not make substantial sums of money. In fact, the petitioners claimed that the income they earn is only paltry in nature, which is also reinvested, in their artistic works.

The traditional art and culture can be inculcated into the next generation only through apprenticeship with such eminent artists, instead of evicting them and leaving them homeless, the plea further said.

Earlier, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs had sent them eviction notices for overstaying in the government bungalow stating that their stay had been illegal since 2014. The MoHUA had ordered these artists to vacate the premises by December 31.

Madhya Pradesh Government clears bill against unlawful religious conversion, to be tabled in the assembly

In a special Cabinet meeting held on Friday chaired by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the Madhya Pradesh government cleared the bill which criminalises ‘Love Jihad’ (Grooming Jihad) and other forms of illegal conversions. The bill on Unlawful Conversion, which has been named ‘MP Freedom of Religion Bill, 2020’ will now be introduced in Vidhan Sabha (whose three-day session starts from Monday).

Under the new MP Freedom of Religion Bill 2020, forced conversion of a minor, woman or a person from Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe, would draw a minimum jail term of 2 to 10 years with a minimum penalty of Rs 50,000.

Speaking about the development, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra said: “Under new Bill, forcing religious conversion on someone will attract 1-5 yrs of imprisonment and a minimum Rs 25,000 fine.”

Mishra had claimed that once enforced, this will be the most stringent law in the country against religious conversion carried out by fraudulent means, allurement or threat. “This bill will replace the Religious Freedom Act of 1968 (after the approval by the state Assembly),” he said.

Woman victim and her children will have the right to maintenance: Madhya Pradesh HM

Any marriage solemnized only for the purpose of converting a person will be considered null and void under the provisions of this proposed legislation, he added, furthering that even if the marriage is considered null and void, the children born due to such fraudulent marital union will have right over the properties of both mother and father. Also, the woman victim and her children will have the right to maintenance, said the Home Minister.

“The probe under the new law will be initiated only if the complaint is made by the victim of such a fraudulent marriage or the victim’s parents and kin. Further, such complaints will be probed by police officers who are not below the rank of police inspector in-charge (police station in-charge) or sub-inspector. The trial in such cases will happen in district and sessions court of the concerned district,” Mishra added. He also said that the accused under this will be booked for cognizable and non-bailable offences.

Co-accused in such crime will also be dealt with as strictly as the prime accused

The Home Minister furthered that the co-accused in such crime will also be dealt with as strictly as the prime accused will be. Also, religious clerics or religious institutions convicted for solemnizing or aiding religious conversion through such marriages too will be dealt sternly under the proposed law.

In November, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra had informed that the government was preparing to introduce Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Bill, 2020 in Assembly in the next session.

Earlier that month, the Madhya Pradesh government had hinted about bringing in a new law to check the menace of love jihad in the state. While speaking to the media in Bhopal, CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan had stated that the state government is contemplating legal provisions and considering appropriate legal provisions against the nefarious practice.

Madhya Pradesh becomes the third state to bring in a law against “Love Jihad”

Now, with the ordinance being approved, Madhya Pradesh becomes the third BJP-ruled state to clear anti-love jihad law after Yogi Adityanath’s Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh.

Earlier, UP Governor Anandiben Patel promulgated the law in November three days after the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet cleared the ordinance to bring in the Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance 2020 against ‘love jihad’ while Himachal Pradesh also implemented acts against forced conversions.
