‘Stop committing this Gunah’: Islamists attack Pakistani cricketer for wishing Holi to Hindus

Shahnawaz Dahani wished Holi to Hindus but he didn’t know that the Islamist Twitter mob will come after him. Dahani, a right-arm fast bowler from Pakistan, tweeted, “To all the lovely people around the world, who believe in love, peace, happiness, Colors & celebrations. I wish you Happy Holi!#HappyHoli

Immediately after extending his wishes for Holi to the Hindus, he started receiving comments that called the act of wishing Holi, a festival of the Kafirs, Haram, and asked him to delete the tweet.

A Twitter user said that Holi was Haram, and extending wishes for something which was ‘Haram’ was a ‘Gunah’.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to the readers because this has been happening for as long as one can remember. OpIndia earlier published a report where Babar Azam drew similar reactions from the Pakistani Islamists.

Another Islamist named Rizwan went to the extent of saying that he will not get to play in the PSL, the Pakistani cricket league, for wishing Hindus on Holi.

The hate messages didn’t stop there, there was a flood of similar messages all over his timeline. One radical user, writing in Urdu called it regrettable and reminded Shahnawaz of his Muslim identity and told him that it was not permissible for a Muslim to wish on Holi.

A similar tweet came from another user named Qasim Afridi, who questioned Shahnawaz on his Muslim credentials.

A Twitter user in rather dictatorial words claimed that “as Muslims, we can’t celebrate Holi”

In 2021, Bazid Khan, Pakistani commentator, and former cricketer had rejoiced ‘Kufr’s defeat’ after India lost to Pakistan in its first ‘super 12’ game of the T20 World Cup. Khan while interviewing the winning captain Babar Azam, in a post-match presentation ceremony remarked, “Lekin kufr to toot gaya,” to which Babar Azam replied, “All because of Allah.” The usage of the term ‘kufr’ by an International Cricket Council (ICC) presenter at an official ceremony had led to an outrage.

The hatred for Hindus and everything Hindu is ingrained deeply into the collective psyche of Pakistan and these Twitter comments are just minor manifestations of that deep hate

‘Journalist’ who was part of anti-Modi BBC documentary objects to Sudarshan TV using the word ‘mulla’, TV ‘corrects’ it to ‘kathmulla’

On March 7, The Wire journalist Alishan Jafri accused Sudarshan News of using derogatory language against Muslims on national TV. He quoted a tweet by Sudarshan News where the channel used the word “Mulla” for Muslims. The Sudarshan News report was about Muslims who participated in a Holi program but did not allow the report of the channel to apply colour to their forehead.

In his tweet against Sudarshan News, Jafri said, “Despite the Supreme court’s warning, Sudarshan news is openly using hateful and derogatory slurs against an entire community on national TV.”

Alishan Jafri is a journalist who writes for The Wire, The Quint, British state-run media BBC Hindi, Article 14, NewsClick, Qatar state-run media Al Jazeera and other platforms that are famous for anti-Hindu and anti-India rhetorical. Jafri was part of the now-banned BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where the British broadcaster falsely accused PM Modi of orchestrating the Gujarat Riots of 2002.

CMD and editor-in-chief of Sudarshan News, Suresh Chavhanke, questioned Jafri’s intensions and added the dictionary meaning of the word ‘Mulla’. In his reply, Chavhanke said, “Do you people consider the word ‘Mulla’ derogatory? Are you getting rid of this word just as you did with the word ‘Jihadi’? You should release your dictionary. Wire madarsa’s dictionary will not be used at Sudarshan.”

OpIndia decided to look for the meaning of the word ‘Mulla’ ourselves. While Google showed the same result as added by Chavhanke, as per the Rekhta dictionary, the word Mulla has multiple meanings. For example, a Muslim teacher who teaches young children, an Imam of a Masjid, a scholar in Islamic studies, and more.

Alishan Jafri’s propaganda in BBC’s documentary

The second episode of the banned BBC documentary on PM Modi started with Alishan’s short monologue where he claimed that calls for genocide against Muslims are on the rise in India. He propagated that while anti-Muslim activities are on the rise in the country, PM Modi does not act on such incidents.

Other Muslim celebrities, politicians also dogwhistled against Chavhanke

Other than Alishan Jafri, other celebrity Muslims also dogwhistled against Chavhanke accusing him of spreading hate on Muslims.

Radio Mirchi’s RJ Sayema asked Supreme Court of India to take note.

One Nisar Siddhiqui accused Sudarshan TV of using language of ‘lafange’ (hooligans).

RJD MP Manoj Kumar Jha also asked the Supreme Court to take cognisance that Sudarshan TV used a word to refer to Muslims which is widely used by Muslims themselves.

Sudarshan TV ‘corrects’ itself

Following the backlash, Sudarshan TV then ‘corrected’ itself and said that the term ‘mulla’ should now be read as ‘kathmulla’.

Kathmulla refers to a ‘fake Mulla’ or an Islamic teacher who is not well-versed with Islamic studies.

Kathmulla definition

As per Rekhta, Kathmulla is an unqualified religious preacher or a bigot.

This further triggered Alishan who then tagged Twitter Safety for the same.

It is not yet clear why The Wire’s Jafri would want Twitter to intervene.

‘Hindutva Watch’ and assorted Islamists claim ‘Hindu mob’ thrashed Muslim youth, Ghaziabad police bust their lies, here is what happened

On March 6, 2023, the far-left news website Hindutva Watch shared a video with claims that a Hindu mob led by Hindu religious leader Aastha Maa thrashed and shaved the head of a Muslim boy Shahrukh on suspicion of theft. A number of Twitter users amplified the claim and demanded those ‘Hindu’ perpetrators to be arrested.

On Tuesday, however, the Ghaziabad police took to Twitter to fact-check the lies propagated by Hindutva Watch, by confirming that there was no communal angle in the incident, as insinuated by the leftist website.

Tweet by Hindutva Watch

On Monday, Hindutva Watch posted a video wherein a youth was being seen beaten up by a group of people. They captioned the post, “Location: Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh Hindu far-right leader Aastha Maa and a mob accused a Muslim youth of theft. They then brutally thrashed the youth and shaved his head.” The video insinuated that Aastha Maa-led Hindus allegedly beat the young man solely because of his religious affiliation.

The website also uploaded a Facebook post by ‘Aastha Maa’ about the incident and misconstrued it to infer that the Hindu leader wrote about it to glorify the violence carried out by her supporters against Muslims.

No sooner did the website post the video, Jamia Times journalist Ahmed Khabeer, reposted the video and wrote, “A mob led by Hindutva leader Aastha Maa brutally thrashed a Muslim boy Shahrukh and made him bald in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad because he had “Ustraa Blade” with him.”

Another Twitter user Sana Khan also reposted the video shared by Hindutva Watch with similar claims.

Shahrukh was thrashed by Shahzad, Jaansher, Sahabu, Mohanlal and Rahbhajan for stealing money from a shop

The Ghaziabad police took to Twitter on Tuesday, March 7, to refute the claims that the leftist website and Islamists made while attributing the attack to a Hindu mob led by the religious leader. The police made it clear that there was no communal aspect to the crime, contrary to what the Islamists on Twitter suggested.

The Ghaziabad police said in a statement released on Tuesday (March 7) that the video that went viral on March 6 was shared with the intention to portray that people belonging to a particular religion did it to stir up communal tensions. The allegations, however, they said were misleading and false, explaining what actually transpired.

The police revealed that the incident took place outside Jaikishan Sharma alias Pandit’s milk dairy at Garima garden in Ashok Vatika, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. They clarified that a youth named Shahrukh, who is seen being beaten up in the viral video, was caught stealing Rs 100 by the dairy owner who then beat him up with some people in the locality.

The police stated that the accused persons, who were identified on the basis of the viral video, were Salman, Shahrukh, Anil, Jaikishan and Wajid.

Even hours after the Ghaziabad Police released an official statement busting the fake claims, the ‘Hindutva Watch’ handle was yet to delete the tweet when this report was published.

Language in TVF Web Series ‘College Romance’ vulgar and obscene, had to use headphones to watch it: Delhi High Court orders FIR

0

The Delhi High Court, on Monday, March 6, ordered FIR against The Viral Fever (TVF), director of the show ‘College Romance’ Simarpreet Singh, and actor Apoorva Arora. The court made the judgment while hearing petitions moved by TVF Media Labs Pvt Ltd, the Casting Director of College Romance, and its lead actors against orders passed by Sessions Court and ACMM for the registration of FIRs against them.

The court opined that the language used in the web series was vulgar and obscene and it didn’t represent the language used by the majority of students in colleges. Justice Swarana Kant Sharma said that she had to use earphones while watching an episode of the Web Series which is titled “Happily Fu#ked Up” to ensure that the people around were not alarmed or offended by the profanity and vulgarness of the language.

A brief history of the case

Earlier, the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) had in its order dated September 17, 2019, directed the police to register FIRs against TVF and its actors and director under the provisions of Sections 292 and 294 of IPC and sections 67 and 67A of IT Act. This order was subsequently challenged in the Session Court and the Additional Sessions Judge directed the police to drop Sections of IPC and continue actions under Sections 67 and 67A() of the IT act. Notably, even after the Judgement of the ASJ, the concerned web series was available on Youtube for people of all ages. The same cannot be found on Youtube anymore, but it can still be viewed on TVF’s OTT platform TVF Play.

The High Court’s Observations

This judgment was challenged before the High Court and the court noted that such profanities were not a true representation of the college culture in India. Justice Swarana Kant Sharma said, “After watching a few episodes of the series, as well as the episode in question, this Court found that the actors/protagonists in the web series are not using the language used in our country i.e. civil language. The Court not only found excessive use of ‘swear words’, ‘profane language’, and ‘vulgar expletives’ being used, it rather found that the web series had a series of such words in a sentence. In the episode in question, there is a clear description and reference to a sexually explicit act”

Justice Sharma also pointed out the discomfort she felt while watching the series on speakers as that could have alarmed and offended people around her, so she had to use her earphones.

The Hon’ble Court in its 41 pages detailed Judgement said that the courts might look old-fashioned but this is very concerning and we have to take strict action against profanity that goes in the name of artistic freedom. The decayed and degraded version of the Hindi language as portrayed in the web series is not part of the common culture, be it in Universities or outside, the court observed. The Court also asked the Government to impose the 2021 IT rules strictly so that OTT platforms cannot escape the legal radar.

Observations on linguistic morality

The High Court, while recognizing the limits that exist for linguistic control, remarked, “Criminal law is based on a moral conception of right and wrong. While this Court is not suggesting that Court should inhibit the celebration of freedom of expression, it cannot but observe that in the present case, in the name of freedom of expression and changing linguistic preferences of the youth, the overwhelming motive is economic profit and, therefore, restrictions are justified in such cases and infringements need to be punished.”

“While this Court remains aware that the courts cannot ensure by way of orders, nor there can be any scheme by way of which a perfect society of perfect individuals be brought about, however, the scheme of the law and rules have to be appropriately tailored to ensure that without there being an infringement of fundamental rights, there is no degrading and depravity caused by use of unhindered obscenity, profanity, and foul language in free for all social media platforms”, the court further added.

The Court further said that the use of obscenities in the web series in the form of foul language degrades women so that they may feel like victims as the expletives and obscenities refer to women being objects of sex and referring to their genitalia.

Madhya Pradesh: Missionary school principal arrested for sexually assaulting 8 minor girls at hostel, 2 teachers, hostel warden absconding

On Monday, the Madhya Pradesh Police arrested a Missionary school principal for assaulting and sexually exploiting minor girl students residing in the hostel premises of the school in Junwani village, Dindori. While the police have arrested the principal, an FIR has also been registered against two teachers and the hostel warden who are absconding at present.

According to the reports, the principal who has been arrested has been identified as Nan Singh. The incident is said to have happened in the JDES Missionary school in Junwani village. The matter came to light when around eight girls residing in the hostel filed a complaint at the Dindori women’s police station under the POCSO act.

This is after the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) inspected the JDES hostel where around 600 students are residing. “When we visited the hostel, which is located in a forest, we found the students in very bad condition. During the discussion, eight girl students from classes 6 to 12 informed that the principal and the teacher used to touch their body parts by calling them alone in the classroom,” SCPCR member Omkar Singh said.

He added that the girls were in a bad state of mind and revealed that they were sexually exploited for past many years. “Some boys also hinted towards harassment with them, but they didn’t reveal much,” Singh added. According to Singh, the students have been sent to counselling and more details would be revealed as the investigation proceeds.

After the inspection, Singh and his team helped the girls to register a police complaint against the school and its teachers and principal. Singh meanwhile also stated that there are several such schools in Madhya Pradesh where students are forced to face assaults and sexual exploitation.

CWC Dindori chairperson Dhanya Kumari Vaish also commented on the matter and said that the students at the JDES missionary school hostel were beaten with canes and were made to eat stale food. “The girl students were very scared. After counselling for hours, the girl students informed me that the principal and school teachers used to do obscene acts. More details may emerge after counselling,” she added.

Dindori superintendent of police (SP) Sanjay Singh said that the police have arrested the school principal and have launched a manhunt to nab two teachers and the hostel warden booked in the case. The three are at present absconding. He confirmed that an FIR was registered in the Women’s Police Station under sections 354, 354 A(1), 323, 34 of the IPC, sections 7, 8 of the POCSO Act, and sections 75, 82 of the Juvenile Justice Act.

Notably, after the complaint, several students of the school protested against the police and demanded the release of the school principal saying that the latter was wrongly charged in the case. Also, the spokesperson of the Gondwana Ganatantra Party Radheshyam Kokadiya objected to the case and alleged that BJP and RSS were deliberately conspiring against the missionary. He said that the BJP didn’t want the development of the tribal children.

He also defended the school and blatantly accused an 11th-class girl student of having a “bad character”. Reports mention that he also publicly named the girl to defame her.

Priyank Kanoongo, chairperson of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights took cognizance of the event and demanded strict action against Kokadiya. He said that Kokadiya was issuing threats to him and was helping the JDES Missionary school whose teacher and principal have been accused of sexually assaulting its girl students.

The case in the matter has been filed under sections 354, 354 A(1), 323, 34 of the IPC and sections 7, 8 of the POCSO Act, and sections 75, 82 of the Juvenile Justice Act. The Police have arrested the JDES missionary school principal and are searching for its two teachers and a hostel warden, absconding in the case.

The police have said that they would speak on the matter after investigation is complete. He is survived by his father.

Pakistan Shariat Court dismisses plea against a law that sets minimum age restrictions for marriage

Federal Shariat Court in Islamabad has dismissed a petition challenging the validity of the Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act 2013. The law was passed in 2013 and sets the minimum age for marriage for both boys and girls at 18 years. The law, it was argued by the petitioner, was against the injunctions of the Quran and Sunnah. The law has been in place for almost 10 years now and is one of the few such laws passed by the Pakistani legislature.

The FSC said that the law was totally in line with the commands of the Quran and Sunnah. Citing verses that talk about the protection of children’s rights from Islamic literature, the court upheld the law. The law has received criticism from the hardliners in Pakistan who believe that Child Marriage is not haram according to Sunnah.

Pakistan in general and Sindh in particular has had a history of brutal atrocities on children. OpIndia has covered many such news reports where Hindu minor girls were abducted, raped, forcibly converted, and married to Muslim men. In 2022, while Pakistan was going through devastating floods which brought the country to its knees, a Hindu girl was gang-raped under the pretext of offering her food, this happened in Sindh too. There are hundreds of such cases where minor girls (mostly Hindu) are abducted and raped and then forced to undergo Niqah with their perpetrator.

The law in question is supposed to curb such barbaric acts, and although it can most amply be characterized as a failure especially if you look at it from the standpoint of Hindu girls in the Province of Sindh, at least the legislature of Sindh showed the courage of going against Islamic hardliners and passed such a law.

The arguments for or against the law were cited from Islamic literature, not one argument was made citing human rights or other modern progressive ideas. This testifies to the deep Islamization of the common populace as well as the Judiciary in Pakistan.

In October of 2022, a minor girl who was raped and converted to Islam by a Muslim man was ordered by the Court to return to her abductor. Following social media outrage, the decision was reversed with great reluctance. The OpIndia report about this incident can be read here. The fate of Christians and Ahmadiyas is no different, they are also constantly subjected to raped, forced conversions, and forced marriages. In 2019 a Christian girl who was just 14 years old was raped, converted, and married to her abductor.

Mehwish Maria, a UNICEF official in Pakistan said that “Child marriage is a human rights violation. Despite laws against it, this harmful practice remains widespread”. Quoting the Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey 2017-18, she said that child marriage prevalence in the country is 18%. She also underscored that child marriages increase during humanitarian emergencies. She said, “Historically, women and girls are disproportionately affected during emergencies and it’s mandatory to sensitize communities for birth and marriage registration,”.

It would be naive to expect that Pakistan would be able to control such issues any time soon but the global community has to put pressure on Pakistan so that the rights of children are not snatched from them, and they are allowed to grow in a safe and sensitized environment. As far as the fate of Hindu girls is concerned, the future looks gloomy. The Indian state all this while was shying away from commenting on these issues, only recently has our approach toward Pakistan changed and we have become more vocal about atrocities on Hindus in Pakistan.

Constant pressure by the global community seems to be the sine qua non to curb Child marriages in Pakistan, laws are helpful but only to an extent. And in a nation like Pakistan where the state is run by a bloated Military which is unconcerned about such issues, global intervention becomes a must.

Belarus: exiled opposition leaders sentenced to 15 and 18 years in jail, Nobel laureate Ales Bialiatsky gets 10 years

A Belarusian court has sentenced the country’s exiled opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya to 15 years in prison. Another prominent opponent, Pavel Latushko, was sentenced to 18 years in prison, and three others were sentenced to 12 years in prison, Euro News reported citing state news agency Belta and the human rights organisation Viasna.

Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya was charged with 12 crimes, including “conspiracy to take power unconstitutionally,” according to the Euro News report. Tsikhanouskaya took to her official Twitter handle to react to the court’s verdict. In a tweet, Tsikhanouskaya wrote, “15 years of prison. This is how the regime “rewarded” my work for democratic changes in Belarus. But today I don’t think about my own sentence. I think about thousands of innocents, detained & sentenced to real prison terms. I won’t stop until each of them is released.”

Tsikhanouskaya became popular after running in Belarus’ disputed presidential election in 2020, Euro News reported. A series of mass protests were reported after the election, which were met with arrests, cases of torture, the death of several demonstrators, harsh sentences and forced exile. As per the news report, Viasna has estimated that Belarus had 1,461 political prisoners as of 1 March 2023.

On Friday, the Leninsky District Court in Minsk sentenced Belarusian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski to 10 years in a maximum security penal colony and fined him about USD 65,000, TASS reported. Ales Bialiatski, who heads the unregistered Vesna Human Rights Center, was found guilty of criminal charges registered against him.

Vesna representatives Valentin Stefanovich and Vladimir Labkovich, who was implicated in the case along with Bialiatski, were sentenced to 9 and 7 years, respectively, in a maximum security penal colony. Meanwhile, Dmitry Solovyov, who is currently outside of Belarus, was sentenced to eight years in prison, as per the TASS report. The court imposed a fine of around USD 40,000 each upon each defendant.

Pakistan: Islamists attack Hindu students for celebrating Holi at Punjab University, at least 15 injured

On March 6, at least 15 Hindu students were injured after Islamists of Islami Jamiat Tulba (IJT) attacked them for celebrating Holi inside Punjab University, Lahore. IJT is a radical Islamic student organisation.

As per reports, around 30 students gathered to celebrate Holi. After the attack, when the victims protested against the attack outside Vice Chancellor’s office, the university guards thrashed them.

Kashif Brohi, a University student who witnessed the attack, said in a statement, “As students gathered on the lawns of the law college, the Islami Jamiat Tulba (IJT) activists forcibly stopped them from celebrating Holi, which led to a clash resulting in injuries to 15 Hindu students.” Reportedly, the University administration had granted permission to the Hindu students to celebrate Holi. In a video, guards were seen distributing batons among them.

Videos of the incident went viral on social media. Sindh Council, the organisation that had joined Hindu students to celebrate Holi, condemned the attack. Sindh Council general secretary Kashif Brohi was quoted by Dawn saying that the administration gave permission for the celebrations. He added the students who had posted invitations to the event on social media were also harassed by the IJT members.

One of the students who got injured, Khet Kumar, said in a statement that the university guards thrashed them when they protested against the attack outside the office of the Vice-Chancellor. He said, “We have filed an application with the police against the IJT and the security guards involved in thrashing and torturing us, but FIR has not been registered as yet.”

On the other hand, IJT denied the allegations and claimed none of the organisation’s members was involved in the attack. IJT spokesperson Ibrahim Shahid said, “None of the students involved in a brawl with the Hindu students belongs to the IJT.”

University spokesperson Khurram Shahzad denied that the students took permission to celebrate Holi at the law college lawns. He said, “There would not have been any problem had the celebrations been observed indoors.” The university administration has ordered an inquiry into the matter.

Tamil Nadu: TPDK workers protest against alleged Brahmin, North Indian dominance in public sector jobs

Amidst the raging controversy surrounding migrant workers in Tamil Nadu, an organisation named Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (TPDK) is now holding demonstrations against North Indians and the Hindu Brahmin community.

On Tuesday (March 7), the workers associated with TPDK held protests outside the offices of the Central government, alleging Brahmin and North Indian dominance in public sector jobs in the Southern State.

According to Times Now, the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam is closely associated with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), the incumbent ruling party in Tamil Nadu.

While speaking to the news organisation, a TPDK worker alleged that the protest was organised to ensure the implementation of ‘reservation’ in public sector jobs in Tamil Nadu. She claimed that the demonstration has no relation to the ongoing migrant crisis in the State.

As per visuals shared by Times Now, several TPDK supporters were seen attempting to break through police barricades. The cops resorted to lathi-charge and detained some of them to control the law and order situation.

It must be mentioned that the pro-DMK outfit has been at the forefront of promoting regionalism and sectarianism in the State, besides anti-Brahmin rhetoric. In October last year, the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam held demonstrations against a chapter on the ‘varna system’ in the CBSE textbook.

In November 2022, the same outfit filed a plea before the Madras High Court to oust Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi for supposedly holding an office of profit. Workers of TPDK have been also involved in violence, notably in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram vandalism case of 2013.
