While states ban Diwali firecrackers to ‘control pollution’, NASA satellite images show stubble burning already started in Punjab and Haryana

Even while courts and state governments ban Diwali firecrackers in the name of controlling pollution, stubble burning in the farms in north India, one of the major causes of air pollution, continues uncontrolled. Despite talks of controlling stubble burning during this time of the year every year, burning of crop residue in the farms in Punjab and Haryana have already started this year, like in previous years.

Incidents of farm fire in the states of Punjab and Haryana have started to show up on Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) satellite imagery of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). As per Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), over 200 such incidents have been recorded so far in the Majha region of Punjab since September 1.

On September 29 alone, 66 fire incidents were recorded in Punjab, while Haryana reported 23 fire incidents. Towards the end of September, stubble burning starts to show up on the satellite images, and it keeps growing during the second week of October. Such incidents have become the cause of severe air pollution in the national capital region over the last several years.

Experts believe as monsoon is yet to withdraw from Punjab and Haryana, the data of stubble burning will become more comparable only by mid-October. Crop fire pattern depends largely on the movement of the rains in the states of Punjab, Haryana, UP and Delhi. LS Kurinji, programme associate at CEEW, said, “Over 200 farm fires have been reported in the Majha region (Amritsar and Tarn Taran) of Punjab so far. Satellite-derived fire event data over the last few years indicates a recurring pattern of early stubble burning in the region that commences in the last week of September.”

She further said that it was too early to derive any conclusive trends on the fire incidents. The Punjab government must act quickly to ensure timely access to crop residue management solutions for the farmers. She added, “The fires we are witnessing these days seem to be following the trend observed in corresponding periods over the last five years. Targeted awareness campaigns and surveillance in high-burn villages are needed to stop stubble burning.”

In 2020, IIT Delhi carried out a study in which they identified 554 villages in Punjab and Haryana where stubble burning incidents were widely reported. The study mentioned regions like Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Firozpur, Ludhiana, Faridkot, Bathinda, Mansa, Patiala and Sangrur in Punjab and Hisar, Sirsa and Kaithal in Haryana were the biggest contributors in stubble burning. The intensity of the fire, wind patterns and close proximity to Delhi of these regions became the major factor of deteriorated air quality in the national capital.

Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in NCR had said in a statement last week that Punjab and NCT states were working on a detailed action plan to manage crop residue. This winter season, the bio-decomposer solution developed by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute is going to be used in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to reduce the incidents of stubble burning. Reports suggest that 7,413 acres in Punjab, 1 lakh acres in Haryana and 6 lakh acres in Uttar Pradesh would be sprayed with the solution. Every state has been directed to adopt a standard protocol developed by ISRO to monitor farm fire counts in this coming season to ensure check on stubble burning incidents.

The target on Hindu festival Diwali

Every year, close to the Hindu festival Diwali, the incidents of stubble burning increase exponentially causing massive air pollution. As a result, the state governments like Delhi as well as Supreme Court has favoured imposing a ban on firecrackers instead. Interestingly, as per multiple studies, firecrackers are not even among the top reasons for poor air quality in the national capital. However, by claiming that firecrackers busted on Dusshera and Diwali are the “main” reason for pollution, the governments and courts become okay with arresting kids and their parents who are found enjoying the festivities with fireworks. The Supreme Court had even rejected a study by experts and said they do not need “scientific studies” to see the effects of firecrackers. This year, Delhi, Rajasthan and Odisha have already announced a ban on firecrackers during Diwali.

Notably, last year, several cases were registered against the farmers for stubble burning, but they were later withdrawn under the pressure of the farmer unions. This year, the same farmers may again indulge in stubble burning with a grin on their face.

Aryan Khan rave party: Two weeks of investigation led to raids, NCB reveals as more details emerge

Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) chief SN Pradhan has revealed that the current drug party bust involving Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan took place after a painstaking investigation that lasted two weeks. The team was working on specific inputs and Bollywood links had come to light.

According to NCB Mumbai Director Sameer Wankhede, eight persons, namely, Aryan Khan, Arbaaz Merchant, Munmun Dhamecha, Nupur Sarika, Ismeet Singh, Mohak Jaswal, Vikrant Chhoker, Gomit Chopra, are currently being questioned in connection with the raid. Last week, Agisilaos Demetriades, brother of Gabriella Demetriades, Bollywood actor Arjun Rampal’s partner, was also arrested after drugs were recovered from him. His name is also being talked about in connection with the current drug raid.

As per reports, late last night the NCB detained at least ten people in a raid conducted on a cruise ship sailing from Goa to Mumbai. The high-profile party was organised onboard the Cordelia Cruises’ Empress ship. Based on a tip-off, the NCB officials had boarded the cruise ship after disguising themselves as passengers. Once the ship sailed off the coast of Mumbai, the rave party began and several passengers began consuming illicit drugs. The NCB officials swung into action and detained 7-8 individuals, who were allegedly seen taking drugs.

Old clip where SRK said he’d be okay with his son doing drugs makes round after Aryan Khan detained in drugs party case

As reports of actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan being detained after raid at drug party emerged, an old clip of SRK’s interview with Simi Garewal from 1997 has popped up on social media platforms. Twitter user Priya Kulkarni shared the clip where SRK was heard saying, “I have just told him that he can run after girls. Smoke as much as he wants. He can do drugs, can have sex. He can womanize.”

Notably, it was a light-hearted conversation with Simi where SRK and his wife Gauri Khan were telling Simi how their son Aryan was closer to SRK and how he would spoil his son in the future.

At around 27 minutes into the conversation, Shah Rukh Khan was responding to a question on how he would spoil his son, who was just a few months old then. “I have just told him that when he is three or four years old, he can run after girls, and smoke as much as he wants, he can do drugs, he can have sex, he can womanise,” he said. Garewal then asks him, “when he is three?”. To that Gauri, Shah Rukh Khan’s wife and Aryan Khan’s mother laughs and says yes, when he is three. Shah Rukh Khan then jokingly adds that he (Aryan) should do everything he has not done.

While he had said these things in jest, his statement from 1997 seems to have come back to bite the ‘superstar’.

Allegations of drug possession against Gauri Khan in 2011

Notably, Aryan is not the only one in the family who got his name involved in a drug case. There were reports in 2011 that SRK’s wife, Gauri Khan, was apprehended at Berlin Airport after a small amount of marijuana was found in her possession. Khan had categorically refuted the claims on multiple platforms over the years, but the allegations did not go away. Several other actors in the film industry have struggled with drug addiction in the past. Last year, a drug racket unfolded during the investigation of actor Sushant Singh Rajput‘s death, and the probe is underway.

Gujarat: Don Abdul Latif’s aide caught with huge cache of arms, would bury guns at dargahs he would take refuge in

Don Abdul Latif gang member Mohammad Hussain alias Tempo and his associate were arrested by Ahmedabad Crime Branch. Eight pistols and 62 cartridges were seized from be duo. Mohammad Hussain Munna Sheikh alias Tempo (50) is a resident of Behrampura, Ahmedabad and his driver Sarfaraz Mohammad Patel alias Shafi Amdavadi (35) of Surat were arrested with the huge cache of arms and ammunition. The duo would hide the arms in Dargahs where they would take refuge in. Some of these were reportedly recovered.

Crime Branch PI P B Desai’s squad got a tipoff that Mohammad Hussain alias Tempo was carrying illegal weapons in a car and was heading from Hathijan circle towards Narol via Jashodanagar crossroads. Subsequently, the police was keeping an eye on the movement. When they stopped Hussain’s car, they recovered 3 pistols, 22 cartridges and one magazine.

Tempo has been associated with Abdul Latif gang. During interrogation he revealed that they had buried more arms at a Dargah in Dholka in Ahmedabad. From that Dargah, police recovered 2 pistols, 20 cartridges and 2 magazines.

During interrogation he revealed he had bought the weapons to threaten people who bought land or started construction on Ashrafpir Bawa ni Dargah where his spiritual teacher lived. After his spiritual teacher died, Tempo lost the case against the trustees of the dargah in court.

Mohammad Hussain alias Tempo

Turns out, Tempo was associated with don Abdul Latif gang and since 1986, he has been involved in numerous murders, extortion and kidnappings cases. Tempo had also allegedly hidden arms in a Dargah in Surat. He was arrested in 2012 and was named as the kingpin behind the attacks on a slum settlement of rag pickers, mostly Bengalis, of Fatehwadi near Juhapura. Later in October 2013 he was again arrested with two guns. He was at that time wanted in a major theft that took place in Vatva area of the city. In 2010, he produced a Gujarati film named ‘Maathabhare’ (notorious) and even played the lead role in it. However, the film never made it to theatres.

Don Abdul Latif, who won elections while being in jail

Dreaded don Abdul Latif was a ferocious and dangerous criminal who lived in Ahmedabad in the 80s and 90s. He was involved in various criminal activities such as bootlegging, extortion, kidnapping, murder. He was born in Ahmedabad’s Kalupur area in 1951 in a poor Muslim family. One of seven children of his father, he couldn’t get a decent upbringing and struggled to finish school. He was soon employed by his father at his shop, where he sold tobacco, but he started fighting with his father for more money. After getting into his 20s, he decided to go his own way.

To make quick money, he took the criminal route and started bootlegging and joined notorious bootlegger Allah Rakha who also ran a gambling den. Latif was first employed at the gambling den. He then left Allah Rakha and joined a rival gambler, but parted ways with him too after being accused of theft.

He then became a bootlegger himself, and that’s where his journey into the world of crime, politics, and terrorism started. As a bootlegger, he established contacts and relationships with smugglers, criminals, policemen and politicians who helped and allowed this illegal business to flourish. He soon expanded his network and got involved in other crimes like extortion, kidnapping and even murders. He even established contacts in Pakistan.

It is reported that Latif’s gang was almost exclusively made up of Muslim members only, which was not the case of other criminal gangs in those times. Perhaps he did it to cultivate a Robinhood type of image among poor Muslims – a community he was born in. And it worked. Latif could win in five municipal wards in local body elections of Ahmedabad in 1986-87. He was in jail at that time. Though he was later disqualified.

However, due to his influence over the Muslim community, he soon started getting close to mainstream politicians, especially from Congress. His proximity with the Congress party was evident as Hasan Lala, President of Gujarat Youth Congress in those times, was his childhood friend.

In August 1992, Ahmedabad saw AK-47s being used in a gang-war that left 9 people dead in Radhika Gymkhana. Latif’s gang members had gone there to kill one Hansraj Trivedi, but since they didn’t recognise him, they killed everyone. The orders to kill everyone came from Latif. The city was shocked at this naked display of terror.

After 1992 communal riots which took place following the demolishing of disputed structure at Ayodhya often referred to as Babri Masjid, Latif joined hands with Dawood Ibrahim. Latif was also seen as the product of the policy of Muslim appeasement by the Congress party, which allowed such criminals to grow for petty political gains.

The BJP made Latif and his criminal activities an election issue in the early 1990s. In 1995, BJP formed its own government in Gujarat and the same year later Latif was arrested in Delhi following a two month long operation led by the Anti Terrorism Squad of Gujarat Police. Latif was lodged in Sabarmati Jail of Ahmedabad subsequently, and two years later, he was killed in an encounter when he tried to flee from the police custody.

Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan detained and being questioned by NCB after drug raid during rave party on cruise

On Saturday (October 2), the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) raided a rave party that was being held onboard a cruise ship in which Aryan Khan, son of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was reportedly likely detained too. The raid conducted by zonal director Sameer Wankhede led to the detention of 7-8 people. As per reports, Aryan Khan’s phone has been seized and being scanned by authorities. He is neither booked nor charged or arrested so far.

As per reports, the high-profile party was organised onboard the Cordelia Cruises’ Empress ship. Based on a tip-off, the NCB officials had boarded the cruise ship after disguising themselves as passengers. Once the ship sailed off the coast of Mumbai, the rave party began and several passengers began consuming illicit drugs. The NCB officials swung into action and detained 7-8 individuals, who were seen taking drugs.

India Today reported that the raid took place on the cruise ship during an event, which was integrated about 2 weeks ago. The NCB officials recovered banned drugs such as hashish, cocaine and MDMA. News Agency ANI reported that at least 10 people were detained during the raid. The officials also seized the luggage of several passengers, who were onboard the ship. The rave party was organised between October 2 and October 3.

Dubbed as a ‘musician voyage’, about 100 tickets were sold for the party. Other passes were distributed by the event organisers. The event was organised by Fashion TV India and a company from Delhi named Namascray Experience. The price of a single ticket to the event is estimated to be ₹80,000. The ship was bound to Goa from Mumbai.

In an Instagram post on Saturday, Namascray Experience said, “All ‘Boarding Passes’ will be issued by 2PM IST today. Guests who haven’t received their ‘Boarding Pass’ on email can come at 4.30 PM IST to the ‘Green Gate’ and manually Check-In today. Please let your friends know if they haven’t received the email. Sorry for the inconvenience caused.”

ANI also reported, “Three women, all residents of Delhi, have been brought to Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) office in Mumbai for questioning in connection with the raid on a rave party at a cruise off the Mumbai coast yesterday.”

As per reports, daughters of some prominent businessmen were amongst those girls.

The NCB officials searched several rooms, and the operation took 7 hours to conclude. Those detained by the agency may be booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. With the powers vested under Section 67, the NCB will serve a notice to detained individuals prior to initiation of arrest. The accused are likely to be produced before a court today.

Not satire: Pakistan sets up anti beggary squad to eliminate professional beggars

On September 1, Shaukat Ali, Parliamentary Secretary for Interior, informed the National Assembly of Pakistan that an anti-beggary squad had been formed to eradicate professional beggars from the federal capital. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) would be heading the squad.

Ali also told the assembly that a large gang of professional beggars was recently busted in the capital in which eight police personnel were also involved. The authorities are taking action against those who were involved in the begging practices as per the law. He further added that in the year 2021, 1,680 beggars were arrested. Around 5,550 children were sent to children centres or eidi homes.

Contract-based ‘begging jobs’ in Pakistan

In March 2021, it was reported that begging had become a profession in Pakistan amidst growing unemployment and rising prices. Rawalpindi Traffic Police had arrested 1,269 beggars for eliminating begging practices in one month. The authorities had said that beggars from different cities were being brought in Rawalpindi under contract to beg on the streets. They claimed 60% of the beggars were found to be fit and healthy while 20% were handicapped and the remaining 20% were drug addicts. Children were also involved in the racket.

Netizens left amused

Netizens had a lot of fun with the report as Imran Khan-led Pakistan government has been seen seeking funds to revive the drowning economy. Major Manik wrote, “Radio Pakistan just announced starting of a Coup that is aiming to take down government. An unstable neighbourhood does not bode well for India either. We hope things stabilise soon.”

Gaurav Sawant, Senior Executive Editor, India Today, said, “Whaaat!!! What will happen to Imran Khan?”

Retired Maj Gen. Harsha Kakar wrote, “Does it mean global beggars Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi are also being eliminated”.

Google throws up images of Pakistan PM Imran Khan for search word ‘Bhikhari’

It is interesting to note here that Google Images throws up pictures of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan when one searches for ‘Bhikhari’.

Bhikari search on Google shows Pakistan PM Imran Khan

In August 2019, after the United States of America cut Pakistan’s aid further by $440 million many on Twitter had pointed out that Google search for ‘Bhikhari’ (beggar) leads to Imran Khan’s images. It was also around same time that Pakistan was triggered over abrogation of Article 370. In December, 2018, too, searching Google for ‘Bhikhari’ would lead to his image. So much that Pakistan had even summoned Google to question why their prime minister’s picture comes up for ‘Bhikhari’.

In fact, even now, first search results for ‘Bhikhari’ on Google is that of Imran Khan.

Imran Khan as ‘Bhikhari’

Which is why many netizens were left wondering and mocking Imran Khan about his future if anti-beggary squad is set up in his country.

Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict: Mother of Armenian soldier receives his tortured and beheaded body after six months

A shocking case of gruesome violence inflicted upon a soldier stationed in the Nagorno-Karabakh region during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war came to light recently, where the soldier’s body was found mutilated and head cut off. According to a report by the journalist Yeranuhi Soghoyan published on an Armenian website, the soldier named Gagik was captured and taken as a prisoner of war (POW) from a place called Tyak in Hadrut during the Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict last year. The soldier’s mother Lusine said, “He was captured not by the Azeris, but by Turkish mercenaries”. Azerbaijani Turks are also known as Azeris.

In the video that was later obtained by the mother, it showed the soldier being kicked in the mouth as he says Karabakh is Armenia.

Further details revealed that the mother of the soldier personally identified his son’s dead body. According to the reports, the soldier was brutally tortured and his skin was flayed with multiple knife marks on the chest. There were also gunshot wounds in his leg with ribs completely broken and the head cut off. The body also carried burn marks.

The author Yeranuhi Soghoyan added, “Lusine asked the autopsy doctor if the boy’s internal organs were in place and received a negative answer. For some reason he reasoned that the body was burnt, that’s why it is not there, but the body was not burnt to such an extent that there were no internal organs, the fire did not affect the internal organs only, if that was the case, I would not be given a body, but a handful ‘Ash’, says Lusine.”

It should be mentioned that Nagorno-Karabakh is a strife-torn region that lies within the jurisdiction of Azerbaijan and is governed by ethnic Armenians. This disputed territory is internationally recognized as a part of Azerbaijan, but in de facto control of the Republic of Artsakh for decades. The Republic of Artsakh exists with no recognition from any United Nations member or observer state and has close ties with Armenia. Nagorno-Karabakh war in 2020 that lasted for around one and half months started on 27th September and ended on November 10 with a trilateral ceasefire agreement between Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia, which compelled Armenia to concede all the remaining occupied territories surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh.

On 27th September 2020, clashes erupted on the Armenian-Azerbaijani Line of Control. It was believed that the fighting was triggered by an Azerbaijani offensive, with the support of Turkey.

Moreover, Turkey had sent two Turkish-backed Syrian rebel groups into the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone comprising of around 2,500 men in support of Azerbaijan. France had accused Turkey of funnelling Syrian jihadists into the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Sunni majority countries like Turkey and Pakistan appear to have close ties with a Shia majority Azerbaijan, having recognized its independence from the USSR in 1991. Azerbaijan and Turkey have declared their support for Pakistan over its stance on the Kashmir issue openly opposing India.

Former policymakers need to introspect why rural women were forced to walk miles to fetch water: PM Narendra Modi

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that those who decided policies of the country for such a long time should introspect if women were forced to fetch water from rivers and ponds just because water connections were not provided at their households. Prime Minister did not name any party and politicians but it was immediately understood who else he was referring to – the Congress party.

The Prime Minister was not making any political statement, though, he was referring to data to suggest why erstwhile policymakers should undergo an introspection. He said that from 1947 till 2019, only 3 crore rural households of the country had water connections. This figure roughly stands 17 per cent of the rural households. Prime Minister said that in the last 7 years the figure has reached 5 crore after his government launched a dedicated programme for the same.

Prime Minister said this on Saturday while launching a mobile application Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) and a fund ‘Rashtriya Jal Jeevan Kosh (RJJK) on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. He said that there are popular literature and films telling the story of women and children walking miles to fetch water, and added, “name village some people will visualize this image in their mind”.

To end this decades-old daily hardship of women of rural India in form of their daily hunt for water, the Narendra Modi government launched the water connectivity scheme for rural India.

Both are part of the ambitious ‘har ghar nal se jal’ flagship scheme under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) that Narendra Modi govt had launched on August 15, 2019, aiming to provide safe drinking water to the rural households by 2024.

The multi-feature mobile application, dubbed a technological interface, will create awareness and connectivity among stakeholders of JJM and bring further transparency and accountability as far as the execution of the scheme is concerned. Users can get real-time data of coverage of tap water connections, details of water samples received and tested across labs and many other useful information and links.

The Rashtriya Jal Jeevan Kosh (RJJK), registered as a public charitable trust, has been set up by the department of drinking water and sanitation under the Jal Shakti ministry to seek contribution/donations from individuals, philanthropists, corporate, institutions and the like if they wish to donate for water connections at the households, academic institutions, public places and others. According to the government, donors will be eligible for 50 per cent deduction under section 80G of the Income Tax Act.

Prime Minister during the launch had a lively interaction with heads of various gram panchayats, members of local-level water and sanitation committees called Pani Samiti as they are the real stakeholders. The Pani Samitis have been formed at the village level and over 7.1 lakh women have been trained to test the quality of water.

Narendra Modi said JJM has been empowering women of the country as they are no longer walking miles to fetch water. He said that water connections at the households save their time and energy. Participants including women agreed with the Prime Minister and said water connection has saved them much time and energy which they use in teaching their children as well as in other productive works.

Prime Minister said that around 1.25 lakh villages under 80 districts of the country has 100% household water connection. He called JJM a ‘village driven and women driven movement’ and a ‘movement for decentralization.’

Assam Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed arrested over derogatory comments against martyrs of Assam Agitation: All you need to know

Congress MLA from Baghabar, Sherman Ali Ahmed, has been arrested by Guwahati Police over his comments disrespecting the martyrs of Assam agitation. Ali has already been a show-caused notice by the Congress party for his comments.

Several complaints were filed against Sherman Ali Ahmed after his controversial comments on September 30 following the violence in Sipajhar during an eviction drive against encroachment. Following the complaints, today evening the Congress MLA was arrested from the MLA hostel in the capital complex in Dispur in Guwahati. The arrest was made by a team from Panbazar police station in the city, and he has been brought to the Panbazar police station for questioning.

The politician known for controversial comments had created another massive controversy in Assam when he alleged that martyrs in Assam agitation who were shot dead in 1983 were actually murderers, and they should not be called martyrs. He had said that Dayanath Sharma, brother of All Assam Volunteers Force Joynath Sharma, and others were killed when they were murdering Muslims in 1983 during the Assam agitation demanding the deportation of illegal immigrants.

‘A group led by Dayanath Sharma had gone on a shooting spree killing people riding horses, and when they ran out of bullets, they were killed by police firing to protect the people. It is not correct to call murderers as martyrs and legalise the act’, he had said, creating a massive furore in the state.

Assam agitation or the Anti-Foreigners Agitation that started in the late 70s was a movement in Assam demanding detection of illegal immigrants living in Assam, deletion of their names from voter list and deportation to Bangladesh. The movement led by All Assam Students Union (AASU) and All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad (AAGSP) was largely a non-violence movement that started in 1977. But the movement had seen sporadic violence in 1983 when the central govt decided to hold assembly elections in the state without deleting the names of suspected illegal voters from the voter lists. The Nellie massacre that claimed around 2000 lives also took place during this time.

More than 800 people were killed in police actions aimed to control protests and agitations, and they are now considered as ‘Sahid’ or martyrs by the people of Assam and all major political parties. Dayanath Sharma and others, labelled as ‘murderers’ by Sherman Ali, are also given the status of martyrs.

Assam Congress had issued a show-cause notice to him for his comments, saying his comments can cause damage to the Congress party just prior to the bye-elections. The notice by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee said that his statements were politically motivated, hinting that the party believes that Ali is working to help the BJP by making controversial statements.

“As a lawmaker, your communally provocative comments in media gnawing at old wounds of the past incidents of Assam agitation when people of Assam across communities had suffered is totally insensitive and uncalled for. The APCC views your comments as politically motivated with intent to cause damage to the Congress party just prior to the bye-elections,” the show cause notice had said.

The notice added that earlier also Ali gad given communally provocative statements and gone against party discipline twice, and despite warnings from party leadership, he keeps making communally provocative comments. The notice gave him three days to reply why disciplinary action should not be taken against him.

Talking about the issue, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had slammed the Congress party for protecting Sheman Ali. He had said that issue is not Sherman Ali, everyone knows his nature, but the issue is those who protects and encourages him. Opposition MLA Akhil Gogoi also slammed the Congress MLA for comments disrespecting martyrs. He accused Sherman Ali of being a ‘BJP and RSS agent’, saying he makes such provocative comments ahead of elections to help BJP. He said that ahead of the assembly elections, he had helped BJP by creating a communally sensitive situation by demanding a ‘Miya Museum’ at the Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati.

Trinamool leaders Madan Mitra and Saugata Roy give ‘finishing touches’ to idol of Mamata Banerjee as Maa Durga

Trinamool Congress leaders Madan Mitra and Saugata Roy on the eve of Bhabanipur poll result, were seen giving finishing touches to an idol of Mamata Banerjee as Maa Durga. Madan Mitra is an MLA from West Bengal and Sougata Roy is an MP from the state.

Madan Mitra also compared Mamata Banerjee to Goddess Durga and declared that CM Banerjee’s idol showed the Goddess in the ‘eye-giving’ episode. The Baguihati Nazrul Park Development Association and Crowdnxt Mediia Art’s Pandal leading up to the Durga Puja celebrations portrayed the 3-time CM as Goddess Durga.

According to reports, three pandal committees in September were in the process of making idols of the CM Mamata Banerjee depicted as Goddess Durga for the coming Durga Puja celebrations in West Bengal.

The committees named Nazrul Park Unnayan Samiti and Crowdnxt Mediia Art were involved in creating a Mamata idol sporting ten hands with each hand indicating her different govt’s schemes like Lakhi Bhandar, Shikshashree, Swasthya Sathi and others. Recently, CM Banerjee also contested the Bhowanipore bypoll after losing her Nandigram seat to Suvendu Adhikari.

Vice President of Nazrul Park Unnayan Samiti told ANI, “Every person in Bengal considers her as Goddess Durga. The benefits she provided to people haven’t been seen in world,”, further adding, “The 10 hands of Goddess Durga will be shown reaching out to people with schemes like Lakhi Bhandar, Shikshashree, Swasthya Sathi etc.”

Also, Mintu Pal the idol maker gave his opinions on the designs. He explained, “The fiberglass idol will be prepared, keeping the facial impression of the CM in mind. The idol will sport a white saree and in the background, there will be the logo of Biswa Bangla.” Talking about costs, Crowdnxt Mediia Art Director Dipanwita Bagchi said, “It costs Rs 2.10 lakhs. Her 10 hands will represent her govt schemes. It was a big challenge for me to complete this concept”.

The TMC slogan ‘Khela Hobe’ used during the Bhowanipore bypoll campaign is set to become the Durga Puja theme for Bhowanipore constituency this year.

The development comes at a time when political violence has been rampant in West Bengal in the aftermath of TMC’s victory in the assembly elections. Mamata Banerjee’s own record when it coms to Puja celebrations have been filled with controversy in recent times. Not too long ago, she had banned Murthi Visarjan on Dashami after 6 pm as the occasion clashed with Muharram.

Madan Mitra had stoked controversy earlier

Earlier this year, Madan Mitra was involved in a controversy for making Hinduphobic comments during a live debate on Zee 24 Ghanta with BJP MP Arjun Singh on the 28th of January. Then he had claimed that Sita made beef for Parshuram and declared his inclination to move the High Court and have the ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogan banned.

TMC MP Mitra had said, “Jai Shri Ram, we have to ban this slogan. I am going to the High Court. This is Bharatvarsha. Why are you saying Jai Shri Ram? You are excluding Sita. Can there be Ramayana without Sita? It means you have been trying to implement the NRC from the beginning.” and also ridiculed Hindu sentiments saying that Lord Ram would not eat unless beef was cooked by Goddess Sita herself. “Janaki jokhon janta parlo barita parshuram aschen tokhon janaki bollan ata janakraja tara tari akta choto goru ranna kore dao karon porshuram goru chara kichu khaba na boddo ragi (When Sita got to know about Ram’s return to his house, she had asked for beef to be cooked. This is because Ram is temperamental and will not accept anything as food other than
