No matter how many protests happen, CAA will not be rolled back: Amit Shah in Lucknow

Speaking at the Jan Jagran Abhiyan rally on the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 in Lucknow on Tuesday, Amit Shah attacked opposition accusing them of spreading misinformation on CAA.

The home minister challenged the opposition to debate on CAA publicly, and prove whether the act can snatch away the citizenship from anyone. He further explained that CAA does not consist of a single provision that snatches away citizenship, it can only provide citizenship.

“The bill is firmly dedicated to the persecuted minorities of Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afganistan, whose rights are taken away, their places of worship and shelter are vandalized. Due to misdeeds of congress the country was divided into two, the minorities in these countries kept decreasing in number, after all where they are? Some people were killed, some of them were converted”, said Shah.

Amit Shah took on opposition saying: “Modiji brought CAA and Rahul baba and company, Mamata, Akhilesh ji, Behen Mayawati, the entire brigade started ranting against CAA”.

Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, Shah reminded that Gandhi had said that Hindus and Sikhs living in Pakistan can come to India anytime. It will be the duty of Indians to provide them with dignity and security. Slamming opposition for supporting Tukde-Tukde slogans raised in JNU. Shah said, “you can criticise me and my party how much ever you want..but if anyone shouts slogans against Bharat Mata, their place is in jail, behind bars.”

Firmly asserting his government’s stand on the CAA, the home minister declared that no matter how many protests and outrages are staged against the legislation, the government will not roll it back.

The anti-CAA protests in 2019 brought out into the open the ugly hatred that has been festering in the hearts of liberals and Islamic extremists against Hindus. It was obvious from the very beginning that the protests had nothing to do with ‘Secularism’ but was limited to Radical Islam and anti-Hindu bigotry with active support from the liberal community. Though opposition had its full-fledged support, the uglier sides of the ecosystem were revealed.

Over 19.6 lakhs new jobs added in ESIC payroll data in November 2019, highest net addition this financial year

According to the Employee State Insurance Corporation payroll data, (ESIC data), over 19.6 new jobs have been added in November 2019 alone. The total number of employees who registered during the month were 19,62,804 showed the payroll data.

ESIC payroll data for November

The number of employees registered during the month of November is the second-highest in the financial year so far. The highest was in July with 19,86,360 employees registered during the month.

However, more than the number of employees being added, what makes November especially pertinent is that the number of employees from the existing stock who stopped paying the contribution during the month was the lowest in November 2019.

In November 2019, 12,66,225 employees stopped paying their contribution towards ESIC which is the lowest in the year 2019.

These numbers are corroborated by the GST collection for the month of November as well. The GST collection numbers that were released in December show that the collection was up by 6% in November 2019.

The collection in November 2019 stood at Rs 1.03 lakh crore in November, reversing two months of decline. GST collections were Rs 97,637 crore in November 2017 and Rs 95,380 crore in October 2019.

In December 2019, the numbers looked even better. GST collections yet again crossed the Rs 1 lakh crore benchmark for the second consecutive month in December 2019. In December, Rs 1.03 lakh crore was collected as GST owing to increased consumption and better compliance.

The gross GST revenue collected in the month of December 2019 was Rs 1,03,184 crore of which CGST was Rs 19,962 crore, SGST was Rs 26,792 crore, IGST was Rs 48,099 crore including Rs 21,295 crore collected on imports and Cess is Rs 8,331 crore.

Clearly, the increase in collections coupled with the increase in new employees being registered with ESIC and November registering the lowest number of employees who stopped paying ESIC contribution is a sign of economic revival, recovery in demand and measures to ease compliance. November 2019 significantly not only saw the second-highest new addition of employees but the highest net addition of employees as per ESIC records in the financial year so far.

The ESI Act is an important provision by the Central government and forms a part of Employee health benefits. Any establishment that has more than 10 employees is required to enrol under the ESI Act.

Under this act, a specified percentage is meant to be deducted from the employees’ salary and the specified percentage is meant to be contributed by the employer. The deductions and contributions are monthly and are meant to be deposited with the ESI corporation under the central government. This amount is then used to provide free treatment of the employee should they fall unwell. As soon as the employee is registered under the ESI Act, he starts to get free treatment from the ESI hospitals which are run and maintained by the ESI corporation (under the central government) and state governments.

Under the ESI act, if certain tests are not available or done by the ESI hospitals, the ESIC has contracts with several private hospitals and diagnostic centres where the patient can simply show their credentials and avail of the tests. The bills are then settled by the ESIC.

Delhi elections: AAP blames BJP for Arvind Kejriwal’s delay in nomination, independent candidates allege VVIP treatment for Kejriwal

Since today is the last day to file nomination papers for the upcoming Delhi Assembly election, deadline loomed on Delhi’s incumbent chief minister and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal who reached the office of the Returning Officer (RO) at the Jamnagar House on Tuesday, after missing to file his nominations yesterday due to delay caused by his roadshow.

There was a huge crowd of candidates at the SDM office since morning, as Tuesday was the last date for filing nomination. Arvind Kejriwal, AAP’s candidate from New Delhi, was delayed again as he arrived with his family to complete the formalities.

Many independent candidates and the supporters of other candidates alleged that the CM was being given “VVIP treatment”. Kejriwal faced protest from the candidates and their supporters contesting against him at the RO office who shouted slogans against the incumbent CM for being given VVIP treatment. They accused him of breaking the queue and entering the RO office immediately after arriving at the Jamnagar House.

Arvind Kejriwal, still waiting to file his nomination, took to Twitter to express his plight. He stated that his token number in 45 and he is waiting to file his nomination papers because there are so many other people there.

The Delhi CM also complained that many people who are waiting to file nomination papers before him do not have all the documents, and some are even without the required 10 people to propose their nomination. He tried to sugar-coat his concerns by adding that he is glad to be waiting because he considers all those people as a part of his family.

AAP’s Saurabh Bharadwaj while speaking to news agency ANI said: Around 35 candidates are sitting at RO office without proper nomination papers, even without names of 10 proposers. They’re insisting unless their papers are complete and file nomination, they won’t allow CM Kejriwal to file nomination. BJP is behind these people.

“This is not India Gate where anyone can go and walk-in. The chief minister has to wait for 40-45 people. Police and other officials could have filtered the people who are coming there,” Saurabh Bhardwaj said.

Kejriwal had missed filing his nominations yesterday due to delay caused by his roadshow.

The roadshow which started from Connaught Place via Panchkuian Marg into the Inner Circle and then towards the Outer Circle on to Baba Kharak Singh Marg ended near Patel Chowk Metro station. Thousands of supporters were seen holding brooms as Kejriwal waved to them and flashed the victory sign amid chants of “acchhe beete panch saal, lage raho Kejriwal”. He was accompanied by his family, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and AAP leader Sanjay Singh in his open jeep.

Kejriwal is being challenged in the New Delhi seat by BJP’s Sunil Yadav and Congress Romesh Sabharwal.

The national capital Delhi will go to polls in a single-phase on February 8 and the counting of votes will take place on February 11. The last day of filing nominations for the candidates is January 21 and the last day to withdraw nominations is January 24.

Delhi elections: Congress campaign song passes off Mamata Banerjee-led protest march from Kolkata as Delhi infrastructure

In the run-up to the Delhi assembly elections, all political parties are launching aggressive political campaigns to lure voters in their favour. While the ruling Aam Aadmi Party has resorted to using cringeworthy memes to assert Kejriwal’s dominance in the upcoming state elections, the Congress party has come up with a rather risible campaign song to woo Delhi residents.

The leitmotif of the campaign song is Congress’ past contributions in developing Delhi and providing it with a favourable recognition across the world. In the literary composition, Congress presumptuously asserts that Delhi was transformed into a glorious city under Congress rule and that the present government had Delhi in ruins.

The campaign song, whose theme is to reclaim “Congress wali Delhi”, takes a dig at the incumbent AAP government for rendering Delhi poisonous while simultaneously aggrandising the situation of the capital when it was governed by Congress governments.

However, while Congress exaggerates its contribution in building Delhi, there is one instance in the campaign song where Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee-led anti-CAA protest from Kolkata is passed off development of Delhi’s ‘infrastructure’.

Tweet by Congress

The image used by Congress in their campaign song for the upcoming state assembly elections in Delhi is from December 16, 2019, when the West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee took out a rally against the legislation of the law that grants citizenship to the persecuted minorities from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

Snap from Congress’ campaign song for Delhi assembly elections

As can be seen in the above snap, there is a poster attached to one of the poles in far-right that had Mamata Banerjee’s picture printed on it with the message “No CAB No NRC”.

Mamata Banerjee’s anti-CAA rally from December 2019

Amusingly enough, relations between Mamata Banerjee and Congress have soured of late, with the TMC chief recently taking a sly dig at the Congress on its call for a strike against the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act. “People who don’t have any political existence in the state are trying to ruin its economy by pursuing “cheap politics” of strikes,” Mamata had said.

Congress’ campaign song dwelled too much in the past without providing any concrete measures or roadmap to be adopted by the party if it is elected back to power. The fact that Congress had to use an image of Mamata Banerjee-led protest to claim as its own indicates the party’s inability to mobilise people into supporting its cause. It’s no wonder than that, much like everywhere else, the party is staring at an abyss of irrelevance in the Delhi political arena.

From breaking Murthis to Ravana Leela: Periyar’s long history of hatred towards Shri Rama and Sita

Comment by Rajnikanth on Periyar, where he spoke of the manner in which the Dravidanist icon had insulted Shri Rama and Sita Mata, has attracted intense protests and criticism from expected quarters.

Read: Rajnikanth refuses to apologise after complaint filed against him for comments on Periyar: All you need to know about the controversy

A complaint has been filed against the superstar but he has refused to apologize for the comments he made. The reaction from Dravidianists is perplexing as Periyar himself was renowned for his iconoclasm. In this report, we shall briefly look at Periyar’s history with deliberate insults towards the Hindu faith and the legacy he has left behind.

1. Periyar breaks Murthis of Ganesha (1953)

In 1953, Periyar organized agitations for the desecration of Ganesha idols. He had elaborated extensively on the motivations behind the breaking of the idols. He had said in a speech in 1953, “We have to eradicate the gods who are responsible for the institution which portrays us as sudras, people of low birth, and some others as Brahmins of high birth. While the former go on toiling, without any education, whereas the latter can remain without exerting themselves. We have to break the idols of these gods. I start with Ganesa because it is he who is worshipped before undertaking any task.”

Thousands of idols were broken on the chosen day of the agitation, which also happened to be Gautama  Buddha’s birthday. A case was filed against him which was later dismissed by the Courts.

2. Periyar burns pictures of Shri Rama (1956)

On the 1st of August, Periyar was poised to lead his followers to the Marina in burning pictures of Shri Rama. He was implored by saner heads in the state to not go ahead with such madness. However, consumed by zealotry, he did not pay heed to any such call. In his mind, the Ramayana was a tale of war between Aryans and Dravidians where the less worthy Aryans prevailed over the righteous Dravidians. Quite obviously, Periyar’s interpretation of events had no real basis in reality.

On the day of the protest, Periyar was arrested by the Police but his followers proceeded with the madness at the Marina. Most people went home after the Police brandished their lathis. Approximately 890 people were arrested either before or during the event. Periyar was released after two and a half hours but he declined to continue the protest following his release.

3. Periyarists’ Ravana Leela 1974

Tamil Nadu’s first Ravana Leela was organized in 1974, a year after Periyar’s death. The event was organized at the headquarters of the Dravida Kazhagam under the leadership of Maniyammai, Periyar’s wife who was about four decades younger to him. It was in accordance with Periyar’s wishes who had mentioned in his personal notes before his death in 1973 that a Ravana Leela had to be conducted in Tamil Nadu every year in response to Ram Leela.

Later in 1974, letters were written to then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi asking her to stop the Ram Leela events in the state. “Your participation in the Ramlila burning the effigy of the great Dravidian hero Ravanan is against all canons of secularism and highly provoking and insulting to millions of Davidians hence requesting you to desist from this dastardly act. Otherwise, we Dravidians would be burning the effigies of Rama and you, on mass level throughout the length and breadth of Tamil Nadu,” said the letter written by Maniyammai.

Indira Gandhi said in her reply, “Ramayana is one of the great stories of the world. Over the years, countless Indian children, including the distinguished founder of your party, have been named after Rama. There is no racial connotation whatever in the Ramlila celebrations in North India. Some modern scholars on the Ramayana even question the traditionally accepted geographical identification of the places in the epic. Any attempt to politicize the significance of these celebrations is unfortunate. The energy of our people should be mobilized for the removal of economic injustice and people’s hardships and not spent on issues that arouse sectarian passions. I would urge you to give up the course of action at which you have hinted.”

Indira Gandhi then proceeded to participate in the Ram Leela event in Delhi as planned. And Periyarists went ahead with the Ravana Leela of their own.

4. Periyar’s lies about the Ramayana

Over the years, Periyar has spread numerous canards about the Ramayana. All his lies were directed towards slandering the Maryada Purshottam. His lies ranged from accusing Shri Rama of being casteist to claiming that he killed and mutilated women. According to him, the Ramayana and Mahabharata were written by ‘cunning Aryans’ to erase the ‘Dravidian identity’. If Periyar were to be believed, Rama was part of a conspiracy to deny the throne to Bharata, who, according to Periyar, was Dasaratha’s rightful heir.

Periyar also claimed that no North Indian Brahmin ever died in the war against Ravana. He had also claimed that Rama had married other women apart from Sita for his sexual pleasure. He had also claimed that Ravana was, in fact, a Dravidian King from South India. None of Periyar’s claims about the Ramayana has an ounce of truth to them, of course, but he made them anyway. The origins of most of these claims lie not in the Ramayana but in the virulent hatred that he harboured towards North Indians and Brahmins.

Multi-crore e-ticketing racket run by madarsa-educated self-taught software developer with suspected terror funding links busted

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) today arrested a madarsa-educated, self-taught software developer from Jharkhand in one of the biggest crackdown on illegal ticketing in railways. One Ghulam Mustafa was arrested from Bhubaneswar.

As per reports, it is suspected that he has 563 personal IRCTC IDs and a list of 2,400 SBI branches and 600 rural banks. Various investigative agencies including Intelligence Bureau, Special Bureau, ED, Karnataka Police interrogated Mustafa over last 10 days. The investigating agencies are also probing terror links and money laundering.

RPF DG further said that one Hamid Ashraf, who is believed to be the mastermind of the racket and was involved in bombing of a Gonda school in 2019 is suspected to have fled to Dubai. In July 2019, a powerful blast took place near boundary wall of Bright Future School founded by one Shamsher Ahmed, in Bangaon village, Gonda, Uttar Pradesh. The school is on the route of Kanwar Yatra which was underway at that time. It was reported that the blast was carried out to disturb the communal harmony.

Ashraf is also a software developer and is believed to have been earning Rs 10-15 crore per month.

After direction of Madras HC, Tamil Nadu govt to remove portion from textbook that claimed RSS was anti-Muslim

After the Rashtriya Swaywamsevak Sangh moved to the Madras High Court against the Tamil Nadu government over some objectionable content against them in the state board textbooks, the HC had directed the state government to remove the mentioned content from the class 10 textbooks earlier this month.

As per reports, the Tamil Nadu government has informed the HC that they will proceed to remove the said content from the textbooks.

The petition was filed in the High Court by the secretary of RSS’ Tamil Nadu Wing, P Chandrasekaran. The controversial content was published in both the Tamil and English versions of the textbook.  The petition was filed against the principal secretary (Government of Tamil Nadu), the director (Department of school education), the managing director (Tamil Nadu Textbook and education service Corporation) and the director (SCERT).

As per the RSS’ petition, the 10 standard Social Sciences textbooks had mentioned “RSS took an anti-Muslim stand” under the heading ‘Hindu Communalism’. The content was found in both Tamil and English versions of the textbooks.

Chandrasekaran’s lawyer, Dr G Babu argued in the HC that the claim that RSS took an ‘anti-Muslim stance’ during the freedom struggle is completely false. The counsel stated that RSS vehemently opposed the Partition of India on the basis of religion. He added that the textbook creates a wrong impression of the organisation in the minds of school students.

During the hearing, the government agreed to remove the controversial portion. The School Education Department stated that it had formed a team to inquire into the issue and will remove the said portion from textbooks.

The RSS counsel stated that the organisation was formed to serve for the people’s welfare and the textbook’s content were trying to create a false impression in the minds of students that the RSS is working against a particular religion.

Highest numbers of foreigners imprisoned in West Bengal, of the total foreigners in prisons, Bangladeshis top the list: NCRB report

0

The National Crimes Records Bureau (NCRB) has released its prison statistics report for the year 2018 (PSI 2018) shows that the highest number of foreigner undertrials and convicts were lodged in West Bengal prisons. It even shows that of the total number of foreigners imprisoned in India, the highest percentage is that of Bangladeshis.

The NCRB report on Prison Statistics 2018 says, “A total of 5,168 Foreign national inmates consisting of 4,381 Males and 787 Females were confined in various Indian jails at the end of the year 2018. Out of the 5,168 Foreign national prisoners, 2,108 were Convicts, 2,611 were Undertrials and 43 were Detenues. West Bengal has reported the highest number of inmates (2,316) followed by Maharashtra (587) and Delhi (416) accounting for 44.8%, 11.4% and 8.0% of the total inmates”.

State-wise number of total foreign prisoners

Further, A total of 2108 Foreign national convicts consisting of 1811 Males and 297 Females were confined in various jails in the country at the end of the year 2018. West Bengal has lodged the highest number of convicted prisoners(1379) followed by Uttar Pradesh(130) and Delhi(97) accounting for 65.4%, 6.2%, 4.6 of the total convicts.

Chart showing the number of foreign prisoners by nationality

According to the NCRB report, West Bengal has also lodged the highest number of Undertrial prisoners (576) followed by Maharashtra (508) and Delhi (306) accounting for 22.1%, 19.5% and 11.7 % of the total foreign undertrials.

Even among undertrials totalling 2611 foreign national the highest number of prisoners belong to Bangladesh (1044) followed by Nigeria (489) and Nepal (459).

Interestingly, the NCRB report clearly states that the state of West Bengal has refused to share data with NCRB and hence, the numbers in the report are from 2017. With the recent developments, it would not be surprising if the number of 2018 is higher than that of 2017.

According to The Hindu, State Minister of Prisons Ujjwal Biswas said that the number of foreign inmates was higher because of West Bengal’s border with Bangladesh. “This is because of the lacunae in guarding the border [by personnel] deployed by the central government that we have a high number of foreign inmates in our prisons,” asserted Mr Biswas.

It is pertinent to note that West Bengal shares a 2,216 km border with Bangladesh and those caught illegally entering the country are usually booked under The Foreigners Act and can be imprisoned for several years.

Mamata Banerjee, the CM of West Bengal has been opposing NRC, that the central govt intends to extend to the entire country. The NRC would essentially aim to identify illegal immigrants and ensure that they are returned to their country of origin.

Despite West Bengal having the highest number of foreign prisoners, most from Bangladesh, Mamata Banerjee’s opposition to NRC is baffling.

Maharashtra: 2 teachers booked for forcing a minor student to watch porn and then raping her

0

Five persons, including two teachers, were booked on January 18 (Saturday) for gang-raping a minor student in Nanded district of Marathwada region in Maharashtra. While the student is recuperating in a private hospital, the Nanded police have booked the accused under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and  Protection of Children from Sexual Offence (POCSO) Act.

Apart from the two teachers who had allegedly raped the girl in the school, the principal, headmaster and a woman cook associated with the school’s midday meal scheme have also been booked for ignoring the complaint of the victim’s family. According to reports, all the five accused have been absconding.

In the incident that took place around two months back but came to light recently, a class six student was lured by the two teachers into a room under the pretext of showing her a video of a cultural program in the school. After taking her inside, the teachers allegedly locked her up and forced her to watch a pornographic video, thereafter gang-raped her. Gravely injured, she was later found abandoned near the school by her parents.

“The incident happened around two months back but a police case but a police complaint was lodged only on January 18,” said deputy superintendent of police (Biloli) Siddheshwar Dhumal, investigating the case. “We have registered an FIR and have launched a manhunt for the five. They have been booked under various sections of the IPC and POCSO Act. The girl has been admitted to the hospital,” furthered the SP.

The parents had initially lodged a complaint with the school headmaster who asked her to give in a written complaint. However, instead of initiating any action against the two teachers the principal asked them to pay her to pacify her. “The teachers met the girl’s mother and threatened her with dire consequences is she spoke about the rape with anyone,” the sources said, quoting the complaint.

Only after being encouraged by her relatives to speak up against the crime against her minor daughter did the mother muster up the courage to approach the police, said a member of a students’ organisation, which is based in Nanded, Maharashtra.

On Monday, January 20 the village observed a bandh to show solidarity with the minor and demanding justice for her.
