Fact Check: Did the Jamia Millia Islamia ‘students’ bungle up the words of the National Anthem while ushering in the new year

The protests and riots against the Citizenship Amendment Act (2019) have gripped the country for over two weeks now. The riots, which started from the Jamia Millia Islamia University soon spread to several parts of the nation with Islamist mobs rampaging, indulging in violence, arson and vandalism. A video has now gone viral where Jamia students along with Jamia Nagar locals, from where the riots started, are seen ushering in the new year by singing the National Anthem.

In the video, Jamia Nagar locals along with Jamia Millia Islamia students can be seen singing the National Anthem as they ushered in the new year.

Many people hailed the gesture as the true culture of Jamia Millia Islamia and termed it ‘heartwarming’.

While many saw the gesture as Jamia students’ and Shaheen Bagh residents’ display of patriotism, many also saw it as a gesture to distract people from the severely Islamist nature of the protests. It was from Jamia Millia Islamia that the riots started. The “protests” against CAA saw widespread stone-pelting and violence and also chants of ‘Hinduon se Azadi’.

However, amidst the battle of narratives, there was something else far more concerning. Allegations soon emerged that the National Anthem being sung by the Jamia students was inaccurate.

While Jamia students, Islamists and Liberals used this video to shift the narrative from rampant violence and Islamism to say that the Jamia students were true patriots, many alleged that certain words in the National Anthem being sung by the Jamia students were inaccurate.

Defence Analyst Abhijit Iyer-Mitra alleged that the Jamia students who sang the National Anthem to usher in 2020 sang ‘Gahe SAVA Jaya Gaatha’ which is incorrect, as the correct words are ‘Gahe TAVA Jaya Gaatha’.

OpIndia found that the allegation is correct. In a clear video that was uploaded on YouTube by journalist Saahil Menghani, the error in singing the National Anthem by the student leading the protest is evident.

If one listens to from 0:12 minute mark, one can clearly hear the person on the mic making that mistake.

In the video, the person leading the singing of the National Anthem can be heard singing ‘Gahe SAB JAB Gaatha’. While it is clear that the person leading the singing is saying ‘Gahe SAB JAB Gaatha’, even if he was saying ‘Gahe SAB Jaya Gaatha’, he would have been incorrect. The real words of the National Anthem are ‘Gahe TAVA JAYA Gaatha’.

The anti-CAA riots at Jamia had taken an ugly turn with widespread stone-pelting and violence. Intelligence report had indicated that over 150 members of radical Islamist PFI had come to Delhi from other cities and hid in the Jamia Nagar area for two days before the riots broke out. The Jamia students were also heard raising anti-Hindu slogans like ‘Hinduon se Azadi’ during the protests against Citizenship Amendment Act.

“He should go to Pakistan and offer prayers at a temple for one month”: BJP UP chief lambasts Akhilesh Yadav for opposing CAA and NPR

Days after former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav said that he and his Samajwadi Party (SP) members will not fill up National Population Register (NPR) forms, Uttar Pradesh BJP president Swatantra Dev Singh on Wednesday said the Samajwadi Party chief should stay in Pakistan for a month to understand the atrocities being faced by Hindus there, reports ANI.

“Akhilesh should stay in Pakistan for one month and pray in Hindu temples, then he will have the first-hand experience of atrocities committed on Hindus in Pakistan,” the state BJP chief said. Swatantra Dev Singh’s remarks come after Akhilesh Yadav had said that the National Population Register (NPR) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) were against the poor and minorities of the country while claiming that he will not fill up the NPR form.

Singh said that there is nothing wrong in the NPR as it provides simple options like the presentation of Aadhaar card or driving license or confirmation by three residents of the area that the person is a bonafide resident of the area.

He added that before opposing the NPR, CAA or NRC, Akhilesh should study them properly. “He should understand what is NPR, it is nothing, one will be asked to provide identity proofs like Aadhaar Card, driving licence or three persons in your neighbourhood who know you,” Singh added.

Reportedly, Singh also attacked Gandhi-scion Priyank Gandhi Vadra, accused Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra of misguiding the people on the law. “The visit of Priyanka to victims of riots with the sole purpose of misguiding them and creating a ruckus is objectionable since people are misguided about the CAA,” said Singh while speaking to the media at a gaushala in Vrindavan.

Defending the Citizenship Amendment Act, Singh said there should be healthy politics as the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) is in the interest of the poor.

Swatantra Dev Singh said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are trying to give a respectable life to persecuted minorities from Pakistan. He said that neither Hindus nor Muslims will vote for the Congress and Samajwadi Party as they took a negative stance on the CAA.

The Citizenship Amendment act seeks to give Indian citizenship to the members of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who have come from three neighbouring Islamic countries – Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh after facing religious persecution.

The Act states the refugees of the six communities will be given Indian citizenship after residing in India for five years, instead of earlier requirement of 11 years. The Act also proposes to give immunity to such refugees facing legal cases after being found as illegal migrants. The cut-off date for granting citizenship will be December 31, 2014.

Rabid ‘activist’ Nellai Kannan, who had called for the assassination of PM Modi and HM Amit Shah, arrested

A day after the Congress politician and ‘activist’ Nellai Kannan was booked for calling for the murder of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, the Tamil Nadu police arrested him on Tuesday night.

Reportedly, the arrest came hours after BJP’s senior leaders staged a sit-in protest at Gandhi Statue in Marina beach, demanding Nellai Kannan’s arrest. Senior BJP leaders Pon Radhakrishnan, CP Radhakrishnan, L Ganeshan and H Raja had led the protests.

To evade the arrest, Kannan had on Monday got himself admitted to a hospital but was discharged following which he had gone underground. On Tuesday evening, tracking his mobile phone signal, the police located him in Perambalur district in central Tamil Nadu and immediately detained him.

A senior police officer said that Kannan would be handed over to the Tirunelveli police and then the jurisdictional authority will formally arrest him.

Nellai Kannan has fought elections on a Congress ticket in the past and is largely viewed as a Congress supporting voice.

On December 29, in a meeting that was called by the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), the Tamil academician was heard brazenly inciting the Muslims gathered there, by telling them that “he expected but no Muslim doing it”, hinting that he expected that the Muslims in the country would kill Home Minister Amit Shah for implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act, which they have been falsely claiming to be anti-Muslims, but no Muslim has yet killed him.

Nellai Kannan had said that Home Minister Amit Shah is acting as the brain behind PM Modi and that if his story was ‘finished’, that of the PM would also be over too. “If his story is finished, then the story of the PM would also be over. I was expecting something to happen, but no Muslim is doing it,” Kannan said during the rally.

Reportedly, he had also made critical comments against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K.Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and others

More than 15 cases were filed against by Nellai Kannan and police have also filed a separate FIR under three sections of IPC. Kannan has been booked under Sections 504, 505(1) and 505(2) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) after various BJP leaders registered multiple complaints against the writer.

Mayawati blasts Priyanka Gandhi for ignoring children’s death in Congress ruled Rajasthan to do politics in UP

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati today took to Twitter to call out Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi’s hypocrisy over silence over the deaths of 100 children in government-run hospital in Kota, Rajasthan in the month of December.

Mayawati tweeted that in Kota in Congress-ruled Rajasthan, about 100 children have died. It is extremely painful for the mothers. “Despite this, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and his government representatives continue to remain oblivious and insensitive towards the same. This is highly condemnable,” she tweeted.

But even more unfortunate has been the top leadership of Congress, especially the general secretary who is a woman herself (Priyanka Gandhi Vadra), who continues to remain silent, Mayawati tweeted. “It would have been nice if she had gone to Rajasthan also and met those mothers who lost their children, the way she did for Uttar Pradesh. Especially since they lost their children due to the negligence of the government ruled by her party,” she added.

In a strongly worded tweet, Mayawati further cautioned the Uttar Pradesh citizens about the politics at play by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. “If despite this, she does not go and meet the mothers of the children who died in Kota, then it must be concluded that whatever she has done in Uttar Pradesh, it has been her political move and strategy. Uttar Pradesh people should be wary of this,” Mayawati tweeted.

“Will hear some good news soon”: Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweets after discussing Assam identity issues with HM Amit Shah

On Wednesday, Assam cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the issue of NRC implementation in the state and said that ‘good news’ regarding the same was coming soon.

“Had a long discussion with him (Shah) about identity issues of Assamese, aspirations of our tribal communities and strengthening nationalist thought process in Northeast. Will hear some good news soon,” Sarma tweeted.

A meeting of Bharatiya Janata Party leaders chaired by its president and Home Minister Amit Shah was held at the party headquarters on Wednesday to discuss the issues regarding CAA outreach programme. Senior leader Sarma was also present at the meeting.

Allaying the fears of Assamese population on rumours that 1.3 crore people will come to Assam following the passage of Citizenship Amendment Act, Sarma recently reiterated that 5.4 lakh people will be eligible for citizenship in the state under the new law.

Amidst protests in certain parts of Assam against the Citizenship Amendment Act, Himanta Biswa Sarma had recently expressed hope that BJP would come back to power in the state in 2021 assembly polls by winning at least 100 out of 126 assembly seats.

The process to update the NRC began in Assam following a Supreme Court order in 2013, with the state’s nearly 33 million people having to prove that they were Indian nationals prior to March 24, 1971. The updated final NRC was released on August 31, with over 1.9 million applicants failing to make it to the list.

However, the fate of the Assam NRC has been in limbo since then after Home Minister Amit Shah told Parliament in November that a fresh NRC for Assam will be conducted along with a nationwide NRC.

The Assam government has also said that if a pan-India NRC does not happen then the state will approach the Supreme Court and the NRC in its presence will not be accepted under any circumstance.

Rajasthan: 9 more newborn babies die in government hospital in Kota in last two days of December, taking toll to 100

At least nine more newborn babies have died in last two days of December in government-run JK Lon Hospital. On 23-24 December, a total of 10 babies had died in the hospital in Kota drawing severe criticism. The total deaths of children in the hospital in the month of December is 100.

As reported by news agency PTI, the hospital superintendent has claimed that the deaths of these newborns is due to the low weight at birth. JK Lon is the biggest government hospital for children and receives as many as 200-300 patients in the OPD every day. Following the deaths of the children, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) had issued a show-cause notice to the Chief Medical And Health Officer of Kota District, BS Tanwar, to look into these deaths. The Commission has directed Tanwar to appear in person on January 3 to explain reasons for not sharing the report on action taken with the Commission.

The NCPCR also observed that pigs were found roaming inside the campus. “It was evident that there was no glass in windows panes, gates were broken and as a result the admired children were suffering from extreme weather condition,” the report further stated.

Following the deaths of the children, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had dismissively said that children die and that there is nothing new in it.

Shockingly, the hospital has given a clean chit to itself by forming a committee to investigate the deaths, which has now ruled out any negligence saying resources and equipment were functioning properly.

Karnataka: Police detain 8 people for trying to hoist ‘Uttara Karnataka flag’ in Belagavi

The Karnataka police on Wednesday detained eight people for trying to hoist ‘Uttara Karnataka flag’ in Hirebagewadi, Belagavi, reports ANI.

Reportedly, few protestors tried to host in a village near Hirebagewadi in Belagavi district. However, the police soon arrived at the spot and stopped these protestors from hoisting flags demanding a separate Uttara Karnataka state.

Separate State Struggle Committee Chairman Adeva Itagi and Secretary Srikanth Madhubaramannarawa have been arrested by the Belagavi police.

The illegal hoisting of the Uttar Karnataka flag comes at a time when tensions are high between Karnataka and neighbouring Maharashtra over the border issue with protests taking place on both sides leading to the cancellation of bus services between the two states.

The decades-old dispute over Belagavi escalated in the city on Sunday after protestors burnt an effigy of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, following which Shiv Sena workers had launched a protest near the Kolhapur bus stand on Sunday and burnt an effigy of Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.

The long-standing border dispute between the two states is pending before the Supreme Court for several years. Maharashtra continues to claim over 865 villages along the border including the Belgaum city, which are currently part of Karnataka. Successive governments in Maharashtra have demanded their inclusion within the state. However, Karnataka has contested these claims.

Habitual fake news peddler Saba Naqvi shares a photoshopped image to allege that ABVP protested against the CAA

Mythomaniac Saba Naqvi was today once again caught peddling a lie when she was called out for sharing a photoshopped image of ABVP members protesting against the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Saba, by quoting a tweet containing the misleading picture, alluded that ABVP, the right wing students’ organisation, was protesting against the CAA legislation brought in by the BJP-led government, and it shows that the world is changing. The photoshopped image displayed ABVP members with the banner reading “We don’t support NRC, CAB, CAA”. The banner also used demeaning language for the Union Home Minister Amit Shah which read “Modi go back, Takla Shah go back (Baldie Shah go back)” and had pictures of PM Modi and Amit Shah with shoe marks imprinted on them. The banner read #ABVPAssam to assert that the Assam unit of the ABVP had carried out the protest against the CAA.

However, Saba’s lie was promptly outed by the National Social Media Convener of the ABVP,  Varada Marathe, who took a swipe at the incorrigible fake news peddler by saying “The world is indeed changing, Miss Naqvi. But when will you change and stop sharing photoshopped images?” Varada had also quoted her past tweet in which she had shared the original version of the image.

As can be seen from the above tweet, the original version of the photo had ABVP members with saffron flags and banners reading “We support CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act)”. An image of the ABVP supporters holding banner in support of the CAA was deliberately photoshopped to portray that the ABVP is not on the same page as the BJP regarding the legislation of the CAA.

Furthermore, the image does not belong to the Assam unit of the ABVP as projected in the photoshopped image shared by Saba. It belongs to the JNU unit of the ABVP and was from December 18 when the ABVP members of the JNU in Delhi, along with a section of teachers came out on streets to extend their support for the Citizenship Amendment Act.

‘Journalist’ Saba Naqvi, who has often been found peddling fake news on her social media page was earlier exposed for promoting fake news carried by the Caravan daily. Saba Naqvi had shared a report published by the Caravan, which alleged that a Muslim driver was tied up and cruelly beaten up for refusing to chant “Jai Shri Ram”. As it turned out, the news was a hoax. But, instead of humbly apologising for her error, Saba resorted to pontification to mask her brazen Hinduphobia.

In 2018, she had shared old fake news from 2015 where she asserted that a Dalit man was murdered for entering a temple in Uttar Pradesh. The news, firstly, was from 2015 when Akhilesh Yadav was Chief Minister. Secondly, the man was murdered by a drunk and not because he entered the temple. However, this did not deter Saba from exploiting the caste fault-lines by trying to pit Dalits against Hindus.

Anti-CAA riots: Police seek ban on PFI as 25 members arrested for involvement in criminal activities during the protests

0

The Uttar Pradesh police have arrested 25 members of the Islamic fundamentalist outfit-Popular Front of India for their involvement in different criminal activities during the protests held against the Citizenship Amendment Act throughout the state.

On the other hand, DGP Uttar Pradesh, OP Singh has written a letter to the Home Ministry asking them to enforce a ban on Popular Front of India (PFI). The letter mentions that PFI was found involved in the various violent activities that took place in the state on December 19 during the protest against the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Taking cognisance of the situation, the Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said that the role of PFI in instigating violence throughout the state is coming forward and claimed that there have been multiple allegations of PFI having connection with the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).

Claiming that PFI is acting at the behest of Pakistan’s ISI, the UP minister Mohsin Raza said that those who were involved with the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), after its ban made a new organisation-Popular Front of India. He alleged that PFI aims to radicalise youth and push them into extremism. Furthermore, he said that the functioning of the Muslim Personal Board should also be investigated.

Earlier, three people associated with the radical Islamic organisation PFI, including UP state head Waseem, were arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police for orchestrating violence by spreading misinformation through social media platforms. Singh had then said that the violence in AMU on December 15 was largely instigated by WhatsApp messages and Twitter posts stating that some Jamia Millia Islamia students were killed in police firing on December 15 in Delhi.

The state intelligence assessment report regarding violent demonstrations in Uttar Pradesh against the CAA revealed that the outrage was spontaneous, however, the accompanying violence was largely organized. The report also disclosed Simi’s alleged new offshoot- Popular Front of India (PFI)’s role in in mobilizing, arson, firing and bombing communally sensitive areas of the state. According to the intelligence reports, AMU has become a new stronghold of the PFI, which saw widespread violence on December 15 under the pretext of ‘peaceful demonstrations’ against the CAA.

Amit Shah learning Bengali to achieve the ‘mission 250’ goal in 2021 West Bengal Assembly Elections: Reports

Amit Shah is learning Bengali ahead of the Assembly Elections in West Bengal in 2021, reports have claimed. He is doing so in order to ensure that Mamata Banerjee and the opposition parties cannot turn ‘Bengali Pride’ into an issue during the polls. Amit Shah was labelled an ‘outsider’ by the West Bengal Chief Minister earlier and it’s a strategy that has been adopted by other regional parties as well. As per reports, Amit Shah has fixed ‘Mission 250’ for the West Bengal elections in 2021.

If reports are to be believed, Amit Shah wants to learn Bengali so that communication doesn’t become an issue going forward. He wishes to address the public in Bengali so that he can establish a better connect with the people. To that end, he has also appointed an experienced teacher.

A senior BJP functionary was quoted by The Sunday Guardian as saying, “The people of Bengal are very emotional about their rich cultural heritage and literature. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been exploiting this sentiment to the hilt. This time, the BJP wants to leave no stones unturned. Therefore, Amit Shah himself has decided to learn Bengali. He is also learning about Bengal’s culture and literature so that he can speak about it during the election campaign in the state.”

“Bengal is culturally rich and Bengali has always been a crucial factor for Bengalis. If our party president converses in Bengali, it will obviously dent the TMC’s attempt to malign the BJP’s image as a party of Hindi speaking people. Moreover, the BJP in West Bengal doesn’t have a prominent Bengali face to lead the party as of now and state elections are fought on local issues. Therefore, the use of the local language by the central leadership will help in convincing people that the BJP is not a party of the Hindi heartland, but a party of our own Bengalis. After all, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee is one of the ideologues of the party,” a BJP leader from West Bengal told The Sunday Guardian.

The BJP has witnessed a remarkable rise in popularity in the state in recent times. In the 2019 General Elections, the party had won 18 seats, an increase of 16 seats from its tally of 2 in 2014. The 2021 Assembly Elections in the state the BJP will believe that it has a very good chance of winning. Shah’s efforts to learn Bangla appears to be part of the BJP’s all-out effort to win the state in 2021.
