No sex even after 8 years of marriage, social media videos: Read details of how 2 Odia movie stars are fighting an ugly marital battle

In the latest development in the case of marital discord between famous Odia actress Barsha Priyadarshini and her actor-turned-politician husband Anubhav Mohanty, the Orrisa High Court ordered Anubhav Mohanty to refrain from making any video/comment against his wife and actor Barsha Priyadarshini in any media, including social media until their divorce proceedings do not end. A similar direction was also given to Barsha Priyadarshini.

The matter was listed today (May 27) before the Vacation Bench of Justice Bibhu Prasad Routray and Justice Mruganka Sekhar Sahoo for hearing.

On May 26, the actress had filed a petition with Orissa High Court requesting that ‘false and hate campaigns’ against her by her husband Anubhav Mohanty be stopped on social media. She has made her husband who is BJD MP from Kendrapara- Anubhav Mohanty, the Odisha government and the I&B Ministry parties in her petition.

The actress approached the court after Anubhav Mohanty shared his 4th video on YouTube claiming to expose the truth behind their estranged relationship. On the basis of Varsha’s petition, a case under IPC Section 509 and IT Act has been registered.

Notably, on Thursday, May 26, after the actress approached the High Court, Mohanty accused his wife and actress Barsha Priyadarshini of running fake accounts and fan pages, and urged people not to be fooled by some fake accounts.

“Request everyone to beware of some fake accounts, fan pages etc which have been created by Barsha Priyadarshini to abuse, argue, use slangs against me and people who are supporting the truth or speaking the truth,” read the Kendrapara MP’s Facebook post.

According to reports, the actress had earlier filed two police complaints against her husband. On May 25, the actress filed a complaint with the Cyber police station in Cuttak Anubhav tarnished her image in the public by posting videos on various social media platforms. Prior to this, she had filed a complaint at Purighat police station on May 22 accusing her husband of uploading videos on social media to defame her even as the case is sub-judice.

It may be noted that Anubhav Mohanty has been lately posting videos on his YouTube channel revealing why he filed for divorce from his estranged wife and actress Varsha Priyadarshini. He has to date, released 4 videos wherein he has spoken in length about the fallout between him and his actor wife.

In fact, in the second part of his video titled ‘untold story’ released on May 21, 2022, the actor-turned-politician Anubhav Mohanty spoke about, what he called the prime cause of divorcing his estranged wife and actress Barsha Priyadarshini. In a shocking claim, Anubhav Mohanty had claimed that even so many years have passed after their marriage, they have not established physical relationship as Barsha is against it. Anubhav said, “I had cited only one reason in the petition for separation from my wife. It was due to the non-consummation of marriage. She has not allowed the marital rights of a husband to me to date. She has always opposed the idea for the entire six years. Now, it is up to you to decide how long and why a husband will tolerate it.”

Anubhav Mohanty also asked people not to laugh at him over this, saying that physical relationship is an integral part of married life. Clarifying why filed the divorce petition six years after the marriage, the actor-turned-politician said that he tried every effort to save the marriage. He said that despite all efforts by him and his family, things did not improve between them. “Before I decided to file divorce, all of my family members, particularly elders, wanted to convince her. Both of our families discussed the matter together several times,” he said.

He also denied the allegations that he was neglecting Varsha and spoiled her happiness and a happy conjugal life. “It is totally wrong. It is not at all true that all was honky-dory between us or we were very happy and suddenly I decided to file divorce,” he said.

“Today, I want to clarify why I wanted divorce. When I first filed divorce petition in Delhi in 2020, I did not want the things to go public or any of us or our families should face any embarrassment or humiliation. I wanted that if things did not succeed between us, we should stop it through understanding and mutual agreement with respect to each other,” Anubhav added.

Anubhav Mohanty had filed the petition seeking to divorce wife Barsha Priyadarshini in September 2020 in Delhi. The petition was filed after Barsha had filed a complaint against him alleging domestic violence. In the divorce petition, Anubhav Mohanty had listed the non-consummation of his marriage as the prime reason. He had said his wife never had sex with him in the six years after the marriage, saying she was scared about the pain that would occur if they had sexual intercourse. He had also alleged that Barsha never allowed him to touch her and completely avoided all kinds of physical contact.

His other complaints against her included mental and verbal abuse, not maintaining any relationship with his family, not participating in any landmark events in his life etc. He had also written in the petition that in the six years, they stayed together for only 18 months, and she was at her parental home during the rest of the period.

While their divorce petition is being heard by the court, Anubhav has recently started to upload videos on YouTube claiming to expose Barsha Priyadarshini, which prompted the court to prevent both from making public comments against each other.

While Anubhav Mohanty is the sitting BJD MP from Kendrapara seat, Barsha Priyadarshini is associated with BJD too. She has been actively campaigning for the party. There are also rumours that Anubhav may be sidelined by the party leadership, adding speculations about a political side of the prolonged discord between the actor couple.

Salman Khan fan MP Anubhav Mohanty slapped with domestic violence case by Ollywood actor wife Priyadarshini

It may be recalled that in 2020, Anubhav Mohanty had been slapped with domestic violence case by his Ollywood actor wife Barsha Priyadarshini in the SDJM court in Cuttak.

Barsha has filed the case under section 12 of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act. She has alleged assault and claimed that Mohanty harassed her. She has also appealed to the court for maintenance from Abubhav.

Barsha has alleged that her husband is a habitual drunkard. His friends often come to the home to have drinks. He has assaulted her and mentally harassed her several times. She further added that if she tried to stop him from drinking, he would physically assault her. He tried to throw her out of the house as well. Barsha claimed that Mohanty has extramarital affairs with multiple women from the Ollywood industry.

Anubhav Mohanty had, however, denied receiving any notice.

Anubhav Mohanty recently came in the limelight for threatening Odisha TV. He is known for his deep love for the actor Salman Khan and often seen pleading Khan for likes from his official Twitter account.

Gyanvapi case: Muslim side urges court not to make the mosque’s video survey findings public

On Friday, 27th of May 2022, the Muslim side in the ongoing case over the disputed Gyanvapi structure has asked the court not to make public the video survey of the disputed site. When the court ordered that both the Hindu and the Muslim sides will be given a copy of the court-appointed commissioner’s survey report and the findings on 30th May, the Muslim side urged the court not to make the details of the findings in the mosque’s video survey public.

Hindu and Muslim parties are at loggerheads over whether there is a Shivling or a fountain at the disputed Gyanvapi mosque. There was an argument between the two sides on the issue of the survey report and videography. At 3 PM on Friday, representatives of the Hindu and Muslim sides reached the court and attended the court proceedings. The Hindu side claims that the 11-hour survey has found ample evidence of a temple in the Gyanvapi mosque. After listening to both parties, the court ruled that the survey report and the videography report will be handed over to both sides on the 30th of May.

However, the Gyanvapi Mosque Committee has requested the court not to allow the photos and videos of the survey to become public. On the other hand, the Hindu side welcomed the court’s decision for the same. Both sides will have 7 days to raise their objections to the report after getting a copy.

On May 24, during a debate on the disputed structure at Gyanvapi, the Hindu side lawyer Vishnu Jain alleged that the Shivling was willfully desecrated by the Muslim side to install a fountain-like structure. He added that a 63cm hole was drilled in the Shivling to make it look like a fountain structure.

Jain said the said structure was still present in the storage room and the Muslim side tried to remove it but CRPF had stopped them. The next hearing, in this case, will be on 30th May 2022.

Kalinga Rights Forum urges NCST to take action against Odisha official for assisting conversion activities of controversial Christian ‘Prophet’ Bajinder Singh

Hindu activist group Kalinga Rights Forum has filed a complaint with the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) urging the statutory body to ask Odisha DGP to register an FIR against Balangir district Sub-Collector, Lambodar Dharua, for assisting massive Christian conversion event by the controversial ‘Prophet’ Bajinder Singh of Punjab.

Kalinga Rights Forum shared pictures of Balangir district Sub-Collector Lambodar Dharua meeting Karyakartas of the SC-ST Rights Forum, that filed a complaint with him against the pastor for organising the conversion event. The activist group also shared the picture of the complaint submitted to Lambodar Dharua. The Hindu group Tweeted how despite proof, Lambodar Dharua, the sub-collector of Balangir, Odisha not only refused to meet with the Karyakartas, but he also denied receiving the complaint against the pastor and his forthcoming event.

“Today (May 27), the Hindu activist group, while informing that they had filed a complaint with the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST), also stated how Yesterday (26th May 2022),Sub Collector Lambodar Dharua Called Karyakartas of SC ST Rights Forum at 6:30pm to meet him with Complaint , But again Today he denied that No One Came to meet him & he waited till 7pm. But Photographs Says a different story , Karyakartas did meet him,” Tweeted Kalinga Rights Forum on May 27, Friday.

On May 26, in a long thread of Tweets, the Hindu activist group explained how the Balangir district Sub-Collector, Lambodar Dharua, has turned a deaf ear to appeals and complaints urging authorities to cancel the event of the controversial Punjabi pastor who is accused of mass conversion through his alleged “changai meetings” where he claims to perform miracles and healings.

In its first Tweet posted on May 26, Kalinga Rights Forum thanked the Twitter user @SCSTForum for filing a complaint against Bajinder Singh’s event scheduled to take place in Balangir district in Odisha with an aim to convert Tribal Hindus to Christianity.

Later in the day, the Hindu activist group put out another thread of Tweets wherein it informed how despite complaints being filed with the Balangir SP and the office of the Collector and District Magistrate, Balangir, Odisha, to take action against the pastor under necessary sections of the Odisha Freedom of Religion Act & Drugs & Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, the authorities turned a deaf ear.

It said that the Karyakartas of SC ST Rights Forum, along with filing a complaint, also called the Balangir districts Collector and SP several times “But NO ACTION was Taken by Administration to Stop / Ban the event Look How Bajinder was marketing his conversion”.

“SubCollector of Bolangir Gave Permission for Conversion event of Bajinder Singh,” Tweeted Kalinga Rights Forum sharing screenshots of the posters of ‘Prophet’ Bajinder Singh’s event put up across the district.

“Whats really unfortunate to see the Bolangir Adminstration Denial to Act even after getting a detailed complaint of the Number of Acts Violated by Bajinder Singh which are actually enacted by Odisha Parliament !! Odisha has Anti conversion Law !! Still no action But Appeasement,” the Hindu activist organisation remarked, expressing displeasure with the Odisha government’s appeasement policies.

It may be noted that one of Bajinder Singh’s recent events that was scheduled for Mumbai on May 12 at MMRDA Ground was in the news after it was reported how three Bollywood actors namely famous comedian-turned-preacher Jhonny Lever, actress Rakhi Sawant and Naagin series fame Sonia Singh had voiced their support for ‘Prophet’ Bajinder and urged people to attend his meeting.

Controversies revolving around Prophet Bajinder Singh

Prophet Bajinder Singh is a controversial pastor from Punjab who has made to headlines several times for his alleged ‘changai meetings’ where he claim to do miracles and healings. Singh was born into a Jat family in Haryana’s Yamunanagar. He was arrested and sent to jail for a murder case where he came in contact with a pastor and got inclined towards Christianity.

“He used to read Bible daily and got converted,” revealed police officials privy to the investigations. Kickstarting his business in 2012, Bajinder Singh started holding Sunday prayer meetings for ‘healing’ and gradually became popular.

In 2018, he was arrested by Police in an alleged rape case in Zirakpur, Punjab. Singh was picked up by the police at the Delhi airport when the self-styled Christian Godman was about to board a flight to London. The victim had alleged that Singh lured her in 2017 on the pretext of taking her abroad.

He then sexually assaulted her at his house in Chandigarh and made a video of the same, which he then used to threaten her. Reports suggest that the victim had paid the accused pastor a sum of three lakh for promising her to be taken abroad.

Singh was accused of looting people in the name of healing. In April last year, he was accused of looting Rs 80,000 from a family claiming to get their dead daughter back to life.

In August last year, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) wrote a letter to Mandip Singh Brar, Deputy Commissioner of Chandigarh, seeking action against Singh for using a minor boy for forceful religious conversion activity. The action by the Commission was initiated after a video featuring a child had gone viral on social media.

In November last year, he made it to headlines after former CM of Punjab Charanjit Singh Channi and actor Sonu Sood were scheduled to attend his meeting in Moga. Vishwa Hindu Parishad called for a protest against him, after which CM Channi decided to stay away from the event

Love Jihad in Karnataka: Hindu woman consumes rat poison to end her life after Azeez sexually abused and pressurised her to accept Islam

In a deplorable incident, a young Hindu woman from Kundapura of Udupi district of Karnataka has died after consuming rat poison after a Muslim man named Azeez cheated on her after promising to marry her.

According to the reports, the 25-year-old Shilpa Devadiga, a resident of the Uppinakudru village near Kundapur city, died on Wednesday after consuming rat poison.

The family of Shilpa has alleged that Azeez, a resident of Koteshwar, had sexually abused her by promising to marry her. Later, he had also blackmailed her into converting to Islam by capturing obscene videos of her.

Azeez, who is married to a Muslim woman named Salma, had allegedly trapped Shilpa into entering into a relationship with him. Azeez had maintained an affair with Shilpa for over three years and sent her messages promising to marry her.

He had also captured obscene videos of her and used them to threaten her when she refused to convert. The family has accused Azeez’s wife, Salma, of forcing her to convert to Islam.

According to police, Shilpa worked in a garment shop for three years. She met Azeez at tutorials before she joined the work. He often called her to his house. However, he later refused to marry her. Azeez had recently visited Shilpa’s workplace and abused her.

Hurt by rejection, Shilpa had consumed rat poison on May 23. Two days later, she died at KMC hospital in Manipal.

The police have accessed a letter written by Shilpa in which she has explained the love and emotions she had for Azeez. In the letter, Shilpa said that men love only for outer looks, however, they act the drama of love only to pass the time. They do everything, and at last say I hate you, the letter said.

Following the death of Shilpa, Hindu activists have alleged that the case was an act of ‘Love Jihad’. They alleged Azeez had asked Shilpa to convert after she had asked him to marry. On her objection, he threatened her with releasing her videos on social media.

Hindu activist organisation Vishwa Hindu Parishad has alleged that Shilpa Devadiga of Kundapur did not die due to suicide but was slaughtered in the name of ‘Love Jihad’. They have demanded the immediate arrest of Azeez and his wife.

“The investigation of the case should be handed over to CID and should provide Rs 10 lakh compensation to the family of Shilpa,” urged Dinesh Mendon, district secretary of Vishwa Hindu Parishad.

Goa: Pastor Dominic D’Souza and his wife Joan arrested on charges of luring people to convert to Christianity

0

On Friday 27th of May, the Goa Police arrested Pastor Dominic D’Souza of the Five Pillar Church in Siolim for allegedly luring people and converting them to Christianity. The police have also arrested his wife Joan from North Goa and charged the duo for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion.

According to the reports, the Mapusa Police received several separate complaints from Nikhil Shetye and Prakash Khobrekar who alleged that the Pastor and his wife lured people by offering them cash or promising relief from long-term ailments. They used to operate from Saligao village in North Goa which is around 20 km away from Panaji.

“Police had received complaints that the couple was asking people to convert to Christianity by luring them with cash or other promises, including curing them of their long-term illnesses”, a police official said. The Police further said that the duo has also been booked for indulging in deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings, and also under relevant sections of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisement) Act.

After the couple was arrested on Thursday night, the Pastor was admitted to a hospital after complaining of high blood pressure. An offense under sections 153-A, 295-A, 506 (II) read with 34 of the Indian Penal Code and sections 3, 4 of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954 have been registered in both the complaints.

Rajasthan: Maharana Pratap Sena demands archaeological survey of Ajmer Sharif Dargah saying it was built on a Hindu temple

Amid Hindus claiming their temples on the sites like Gyanvapi in Varanasi, Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura, Qutub Minar in Delhi, Taj Mahal in Agra etc, Maharana Pratap Sena has claimed that the Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti’s Dargah at Ajmer is originally a Hindu temple. Rajvardhan Singh Parmar is the national president of Maharana Pratap Sena. He has written a letter to Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot demanding that a survey of the Dargah be conducted through the archaeological department.

In his letter to the CM, Parmar said that a Hindu temple was demolished and a dargah was built in Ajmer, so it should be surveyed by the archaeological department. He claimed that there will be strong evidence of the existence of a temple in it and that at many places inside the dargah, the Hindu religious symbols Swastik and lotus flowers can be seen.

The letter by Maharana Pratap Sena

He said, “The dargah of Khwaja Gareeb Nawaz was an ancient Hindu temple earlier. The symbols of Swastika are there on the walls and windows. We demand that ASI conduct a survey of the dargah.”

Parmar, a resident of Delhi, said that if this is not investigated in a week, he will meet union ministers in Delhi, and then 2,000 workers of the Maharana Pratap Sena will go to Ajmer. He said that there will be a large-scale movement. He has sent a copy of the letter to President Ram Nath Kovind, Governor Kalraj Mishra, Union Ministers Arjun Ram Meghwal and Meenakshi Lekhi. Ajay Nagar of Hindu Jagran Manch has also said that the dargah has been built by occupying the Eklinga temple built by Prithviraj Chauhan.

Jainual Abedin, the Deewan of the Dargah, denied the claims and said that Maharana Pratap Sena has written this letter to gain cheap publicity. He also said that the Dargah is a symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity and not only Muslims but Hindus in large numbers also visit the Dargah. Moin Chisti, president of Anjuman Saiyad Zadgan, the body of Khadims, said the claim is baseless as there is no such symbol at the Dargah.

He further said, “I am saying this with full responsibility that the symbol of Swastika is nowhere in the dargah. The dargah has been there for 850 years. No such question ever arose. There is a certain kind of atmosphere in the country today which was never there. Raising such questions about the Dargah is hurting sentiments of crores of people in the country who offer their prayers irrespective of the religion.”

It is notable that among the Sufi shrines, the shrine of Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer, Rajasthan is one of the most popular. The shrine invites devotees, Muslims, and Hindus both, from all over the world. While the Ajmer Dargah is an important religious center for Muslims, and even some Hindus, who visit there to get their wishes fulfilled, the history behind Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti is rather violent, and not very tolerant either.

Records say that the much revered Khawaja of the Ajmer Dargah had a deep-seated hatred toward Hindus. He was among the very first Sufi saints to arrive in India where Delhi was under the rule of Sultan Iltutmish. Having arrived in Ajmer, Chishti reportedly saw a number of temples near the Anasagar lake and promised that he will have them razed to the ground. Besides, he was also involved in Jihad on the side of Sultan Muhammad Ghauri against the Hindu King Prithviraj Chauhan. Chishti had credited himself for Prithviraj’s capture, writing, “We have seized Pithaura (Prithviraj) and handed him to the army of Islam.”

Three suicides in 12 days: The Bengali film industry is under the spotlight over the death of actresses

The Bengali film industry (also called Tollywood) has been under the scanner after three model-turned-actresses allegedly committed suicide within the past 12 days. The deceased included actress Pallavi Dey, Bidisha De Majumder and Manjusha Niyogi.

The saga began with the death of 25-year-old Pallavi on May 15 this year. Her body was recovered from a rented apartment in the Garfa area of Kolkata. She was rushed to the MR Bangur Hospital where the actress was declared dead on arrival.

“The actor was found hanging from a ceiling fan with the help of a bedsheet. The incident took place at about 9:30 am. A case of unnatural death has been registered,” the police had informed. Although the case appeared to be that of suicide, Pallavi’s family raised the possibility of a murder.

Two days later on May 17, the Kolkata police arrested the actress’ live-in-partner Sagnik Chakraborty. The cops are now questioning the co-workers of the Pallavi Dey. She was the female lead in the TV serial ‘Mon Mane Na.’

She had also worked in other serials such as ‘Aami Sirajer Begum’, ‘Reshma Japi’, ‘Kunjo Chhaya’ and ‘Saraswati Prem’.

Sour relationship claimed to be the cause of Bidisha De Majumder’s suicide

Her death was mourned by model/ actress Bidisha De Majumder. In a Facebook post, she wrote. “What is this? I cannot believe it, Pallavi Dey.”

Majumder, who expressed grief over the death of Pallavi Dey, allegedly committed suicide 10 days later on Wednesday (May 25). Her body was recovered from her flat in the Dum Dum area of Kolkata.

As per a report in India Today, the actress ended her life over a same-sex relationship with a woman whom she endearingly referred to as ‘bou‘ (wife). “Bidisha also used to put sindoor on the woman’s forehead during their bridal photoshoots, claiming that only she could do that to her wife,” the report said.

The Facebook cover picture of the deceased actress shows her referring to model Rusha Mukherjee as her alleged wife.

Screengrab of Facebook cover of Bidisha De Majumder

However, a friend of Bidisha De Majumder named Diya Das told ABP Ananda that the actress was sad over her ‘dysfunctional relationship’ with her ‘boyfriend’ of 5 months. The man, identified as one Anubhav Bera, has dismissed the claims and said that he never agreed to be in a relationship with Majumder.

Model Manjusha Niyogi commits suicide over Majumder’s death

On Friday (May 27), it came to light that a close friend of Bidisha De Majumder committed suicide in the Patuli neighbourhood of Kolkata. Identified as Manjusha Niyogi, she worked as an actress in TV serial titled, ‘Kanchi.’

Her mother claimed that the actress went into acute depression after learning about the death of Majumder. “My daughter used to constantly say that she wants to stay with Bidisha. She used to speak about Bidisha constantly. I scolded her when she told me that soon the media will focus on our house just like Bidisha’s,” she informed.

The sudden death of three models-turned-actresses has put the spotlight on addressing mental health issues at the earliest.

“In 96 % of cases, those who take a drastic step, often speak about it prior to the incident. Most of the time, it is a desperate cry for help and we should notice it. The moment we notice such things, we should immediately seek help from professionals,” remarked Molly Thambi who works for suicide prevention.

Coincidentally, all actresses were found hanging from their ceilings in their Kolkata apartment.

‘Stop reporting or bear consequences’: PFI goons threaten Republic TV journalists for reporting on Hate Speech rally in Kerala’s Alappuzha

The members of the radical Islamic organisation, Popular Front of India (PFI), issued threats to Republic TV journalists and crew for reporting on the recent hate speech rally organised by them in Alappuzha, Kerala.

According to Republic TV, the channel’s crew had visited Kerala to trace the minor boy who was seen raising provocative slogans against Hindus and Christians at a PFI rally in Kerala’s Alappuzha. However, they were confronted by the PFI members, who threatened them for reporting on the case.

In a video shared by the Republic TV, some members allegedly belonging to the PFI asked the Republic TV crew to “stop reporting, and leave the locality, or bear the consequences.”

“It would be better for you if you leave,” one of the men can be heard saying in the video, shot outside the minor boy’s residence.

Earlier on Thursday, the Kerala police had traced the details of the minor boy who was seen raising provocative slogans against Hindus and Christians at the PFI rally. A police team from Alappuzha had reached Kochi to collect information regarding the minor boy and his parents after he was seen making hate speech against non-Muslims while sitting on the shoulders of another PFI worker.

The police are tracking the minor’s parents to take action against them for instigating him to deliver such provocative slogans. A video had gone viral recently in which a boy was seen making hate slogans at the ‘Save the Republic’ rally conducted by PFI on May 21.

“Hindus should keep rice for their last rites, and Christians should keep incense sticks for their last rites. If your live decently, you can live in our land, and if you don’t live decently, we know Azadi (freedom). Live decently, decently, decently,” the boy was heard saying in the video from the rally. Today Kerala High Court also ordered to take action against oragisers of the PFI rally for use of minor boy to raise divisive slogans.

Kochi Police Commissioner CH Nagaraju said that they have accessed more details about the minor, which he said cannot be divulged at the moment. The police have also hinted about a conspiracy, suggesting that the minor was trained to chant slogans.

“We have launched a detailed probe to identify the people who trained the boy to deliver such provocative slogans,” said a police officer.

Meanwhile, the Kerala Police have arrested Ansar Najeeb, the person who carried the minor child on his shoulders. During the interrogation, Najeeb claimed that he did not know who the child was but carried him on his shoulders just out of curiosity. PFI Alappuzha district president PA Navas was also booked in connection with the incident.

Uttarakhand: CM Pushkar Singh Dhami announces decision to implement Uniform Civil Code in the state

On Friday 27th of May, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced his decision to introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. Speaking at a public gathering in Champawat, he stated that the state government promised the adoption of UCC before the recent assembly elections and that it will be implemented soon.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said, “We have taken a decision to implement the Uniform Civil Code in the state. Uttarakhand will be the second state after Goa to implement this. We will bring UCC for the people irrespective of them being from any religion and section of the society.”

Meanwhile, the state government has been accused of playing divisive politics by the Congress party, which has been resisting the move. Pradeep Tamta, a Congress MP who spoke to Republic TV, accused the state government of playing divisive politics and demanded clarification on whether UCC is within state authority or not.

Tamta stated, “I see no universal demand for the UCC as Pushkar Dhami has been claiming. The Modi government has been ruling the country for the last 8 years, it is yet not clear whether UCC comes under the state jurisdiction or not.”

The Uniform Civil Code debate

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has long advocated for a Uniform Civil Code in the country. In civil affairs such as marriage, divorce, adoption, succession, and maintenance, the UCC supersedes personal laws and demands identical regulations for members of different religions. During the famous Shah Bano case in 1985, even the Supreme Court of India suggested UCC.

Uttarakhand CM Dhami had previously stated that the Uniform Civil Code would give a legal framework for all people, regardless of faith, for marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance, and that the reform would create social unity, eradicate gender-based discrimination, and boost women empowerment.

Earlier on May 2, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur declared that the UCC will be introduced in the state shortly. A debate over the UCC has started in numerous states throughout the nation, with Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also recently supporting it, stating that the UCC should be adopted in the best interests of Muslim women.

After Goa, Uttarakhand will be the second Indian state to adopt a UCC. Goa is currently the only state having a Uniform Civil Code, which dates back to the annexation of Goa. India has kept the 1867 Portuguese Civil Code, which applied to all state inhabitants, regardless of faith. All marriages in the state are required to be registered under the Goan Civil Code.

Article 44 (Part IV) of the Indian Constitution provides for the establishment of a Uniform Civil Code. The Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP) include UCC, which can be applied by state governments.

‘Muslim population used to be 1.5% now it is 14%’: Swami Darshan Bharati explains how Uttarakhand is witnessing a rapid demographic shift

On May 22, 2022, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that the state has been carrying out an extensive identification drive to expel illegal Rohingyas migrants from the state. Along with illegal Mazars mushrooming up in various parts, he had also raised concerns over the demographic imbalance in Uttarakhand due to the unprecedented increase in the Muslim migrant population in the state.

The CM had assured that several Rohingya Muslims without proper documentation had been identified by the state authorities and will be driven out of the state after the identification drive.

Swami Darshan Bharti, a veteran saint working against illegal Mazars and drug addicts, spoke to OpIndia about this radical problem plaguing the state of Uttarakhand, also known as “the land of the gods” (Devbhoomi) because of its number of Hindu pilgrimage sites.

The Muslim population used to be 1.5% to 2%, now it is about 14% in Uttarakhand: Swami Darshan Bharati

Swami Darshan Bharti explained, “Previously, the cumulative number of Muslims in Uttarakhand was roughly 1.5 to 2%. The local Muslims spoke Garhwali and were sensitive to the indigenous culture. When Uttarakhand annexed the district of Haridwar, the entire Muslim population rose to 5 to 6%. Furthermore, when Yogi Adityanath took over the charge in Uttar Pradesh, many Muslims abandoned the state and settled in Uttarakhand. Among the settlers are a number of well-known Muslim leaders and entrepreneurs. Muslims now constitute around 14% of the population of Uttarakhand. Infiltrators from Bangladesh and Rohingyas living in the riverside slums are adding to this population. These illegal infiltrators and Rohingyas have also arranged all the necessary government documents over these years, said the Hindu saint.

Bengali colonies have mushroomed in various parts of Uttarakhand, Congress helped them with documentation, says Swami Darshan Bharati

“There were roughly 6000 Muslim votes in the first assembly in Vikasnagar, Dehradun,” Swami Bharti continued. In the same assembly today, there are approximately 32 thousand Muslim voters. Muslims who have come and settled here from other states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Bengal have also contributed to these demographical changes. Bengali colonies have mushroomed in certain pockets in Uttarakhand. At least 50,000 Bengali Muslims have made their homes here,” rued Swami Darshan.

He added that the demographic imbalance in the mountainous regions in Uttarakhand has also become a cause of concern for the government and the administration of the state. “In Uttarkashi today, there are around 5,000 Muslim voters, but there were never even 150 in the past. If we hadn’t evacuated Badrinath, Muslims would have moved there as well. The Muslim community had previously requested space from the Badrinath temple committee. They’ve now, however, begun to re-establish themselves there because it is almost impossible for us to conduct daily monitoring.

Swami Darshan Bharati told OpIndia that the biggest boost to Muslim population in Uttarakhand was in the Congress government. He stated that it was not the BJP government, but the previous Congress regime that helped illegal Roginyas settle here by preparing their official documents.

Notably, the Muslim population of Uttarakhand was only 1.5 per cent when the state was constituted in November 2000. It jumped to 13.95 per cent in the 2011 census. After this, no official data is available regarding the increase in the population of Muslims, however, experts are of the opinion that are no signs of the influx slowing down.

Swami Darshan Bharati expressed his concern over Hindus in Uttarakhand losing their businesses and livelihoods as a result of the rapid influx of Muslims from neighbouring states. He said that Uttarakhand was known for its jhatka meat business, however, after Muslim migrants pervaded the state, the halal meat business began flourishing there. “Every day, halal meat worth Rs 25 crore is sold in Dehradun,” stated the saint.

He went on to say that Muslims have not only taken over the state’s meat industry but that they have also taken over other small businesses. Be it the vegetable market or punctures repairing business or tourist guide jobs or salons, all these businesses are now being predominantly run by Muslims in Uttarakhand.

At Chidiyapur, near Haridwar, there are dozens of food and beverage shops lined up. All these shops are named after Hindu deities, such as Badri, Kedar and Gangotri, however, the ownership of only three of these shops, are with local Hindus. All the other shops have been snatched by the Muslims.

Likewise, in Dehradun, Muslims have taken over and renamed many shops that originally belonged to local Hindus.

Besides, Muslims are dominating the furniture, welding, water, mining, and construction materials businesses as well. You won’t be able to build a house in Devbhoomi without the help of Muslims. As a result, locals find themselves being pushed out of jobs and livelihoods they had been holding for generations.

Notably, Swami Darshan Bharati had on March 27 also shared a picture of a fruit shop on his social media page named Badri Kedar Traders. He had stated how this shop in Rudraprayag, which was named after a Hindu place of worship was being run by Faizaz Ahmed.

Bemoaning the fact that it is now nearly impossible to find even the smallest sliver of land in Uttarakhand that is free of Muslim migrants, the saint added how Muslim migrants’ intervention in the leasing of horses, one of the most profitable businesses in the hill stations in Uttarakhand, has also increased drastically in the state.

“The local Hindus have lost nearly 90% of their horse-leasing industry to Muslims. As a result, these helpless residents, who once had successful businesses, are now forced to work menial tasks to feed their families. The majority of the businesses taken over by Muslims were GST-free, which means that they were extremely profitable ventures that are now bearing fruit for the Muslim migrants,” Swami Darshan told OpIndia.

Like Swami Darshan Bharati, Aman Pandey, an office-bearer of Hindu Yuva Vahini in Rishikesh, also told OpIndia how many Muslim businessmen function under various Hindu names in Rishikesh too.

VHP had objected to Muslim migrants running shops in Haridwar under Hindu names

It may be recalled that on April 1, 2022, the members of Vishwa Hindu Parishad held a meeting in Haridwar in which it raised objections to Muslim migrants running businesses in various places ranging from Haridwar to Muzaffarnagar under the guise of Hindu names. The VHP members had revealed how one Dilshad had been running a Dhaba under a Hindu name- Mahalakshmi Hotel. He had reportedly placed a saffron board over his eatery to give an impression that the place belonged to a Hindu. Besides, the VHP leaders revealed names of many other such businesses which Muslims were running under Hindu names.

Congress vows to build Muslim University in Uttarakhand

It may be recalled that in February this year, ahead of the Uttarakhand state assembly elections, Congress leader Harish Rawat has promised to open a Muslim University in the state if he gets elected as the Chief Minister. The statement met with widespread criticism compelling the Congress party to dismiss the statement made by its senior leader. However. Even after the protests, in April 2022, Aqeel Ahmed, the General Secretary of the Congress Committee of Uttarakhand, had announced to build the Muslim University in Uttarakhand at all costs.

It is pertinent to note that the Congress that was backing the idea of opening a Muslim University in Uttarakhand had revolted against the proposal to build a Sanskrit University in Karnataka. On January 16, after the Karnataka government allotted 100 acres of land for the permanent campus of Karnataka Sanskrit University, Congress Spokesperson A N Nataraja Gowda opposed the construction and called it ‘useless’.

Swami Darshan Bharati held Congress responsible for the demographic changes in Uttarakhand

OpIndia in another article had detailed how Swami Darshan Bharati held the Congress responsible for the demographic shift in Uttarakhand. He told OpIndia how Uttarakhand which didn’t have any mosque till 1985 has more than 2000 illegal Mazars now. Asserting that the biggest boost to Muslim population in Uttarakhand was in the Congress government led by ND Tiwari, Swami Darshan Bharati said, “There has been a great sin in the ND Tiwari government. Under his government, the largest mosque in Uttarakhand was built on top of the temple of Naina Devi in Nainital. The mosque has been built on the road by completely encroaching upon it. The temple has also started to look small as compared to the mosque.”

He further said, “It was ill-fate of Uttarakhand, the origin of the Hindus, the first full-term government that came after the formation of the state, was that of Narayan Dutt Tiwari. We thought that this region would give the message of Hinduism to the world, but now there is a crisis of existence here. Most of the mosques built in Uttarakhand date back to the time of Narayan Dutt Tiwari. Mosques were also built in Srinagar, Pauri, Dugadda, and Kotdwar. A mosque has also been built at Dharchula, which falls on the border. In the Congress government, Muslim leaders were made Minister of State.”
