As Congress’ P Chidambaram claims he is ‘andolanjeevi’, here is how his police killed an ‘adolankari’ during 2011 anti-corruption protests

Days after Prime Minister Modi called out the hypocrisy of professional protestors who agitate only for the sake of protesting, Congress leader and former Union Home Minister P Chidambaram took to Twitter to claim how he is also an ‘andolanjeevi’ (lifelong protestor), walking on the paths of Mahatma Gandhi.

The fact that Mahatma Gandhi was agitating against the British rule and not laws formed by democratically elected government, was quite lost on him.

Another fact that he conveniently forgot was how under his leadership, the Delhi Police raided and lathicharged the protestors at Ram Leela Maidan, leading to protestors getting severely injured and deaths.

On September 26, 2011, 51-year-old Rajbala passed away after fighting for her life for weeks as Delhi Police, under the then Home Minister P Chidambaram raided Ram Leela Maidan on June 5, 2011. The lathi charge left her with a crippling spinal injury. She was participating in the Baba Ramdev led protests.

As per hospital statement, she was admitted to hospital with post-traumatic fracture and dislocation of cervical C4 and C5 vertebrate with quadriplegia and respiratory irregularity, haemodynamic instability and bladder and bowel dysfunction. She was critical from day 1.

In Dr Manmohan Singh government, P Chidambaram was the Union Home Minister from November 2008 to July 2012. Delhi Police falls under the Union Home Ministry.

But, he is an ‘andolanjeevi’.

Congress MP claims new agriculture laws will scrap APMC markets, fails to point out which clause says that

On February 9, several members of Parliament expressed their views on the new Agriculture laws and ongoing farmer protests. Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu expressed his opinions on Agriculture laws in Lok Sabha. During an almost 22-minute long speech, he made some claims but failed to provide any explanation.

‘APMC markets will be scraped’ – Did Singh mention clauses without reading them?

While talking about The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, Singh claimed that in clause 3 and clause 5, it is written that private markets will be established and APMC markets will be scrapped. Anurag Thakur, Minister of State for Corporate Affairs, interrupted him immediately and asked where it is written that the APMC markets will be scrapped?

Confused by the rebuttal from the minister, MP Singh tried to re-read the clauses but apparently could not find the exact points which could back his claims. He kept on saying that clause 3 and clause 5 have the provision for the same, but in reality, clause 3 and clause 5 have no mention of APMC markets being scrapped.

Does America pay 40,000 billion dollars in subsidy to its farmers every year?

MP Singh claimed that the United States paid USD 40,000 billion in subsidies last year to its farmers. However, the amount was USD 46 Billion in 2020. Singh somehow multiplied the subsidies by thousand and forgot to check how much is the total federal budget of the United States that stands at USD 4.829 trillion or USD 4829 billion. He also claimed that the government would bring Google and WhatsApp in the Agriculture sector. Interestingly, Google and WhatsApp do not have any Agriculture business in India or otherwise.

Clause 3 does not even talk about APMC markets

Clause 3 of the said law allows the farmers to do inter-state trading. It says, “Subject to the provisions of this Act, any farmer or trader or electronic trading and transaction platform shall have the freedom to carry on the inter-State or intra-State trade and commerce in farmers’ produce in a trade area.” How Singh reached the conclusion that it means scrapping of APMC markets is difficult to understand.

Clause 3 of The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020 (Source: egazette.nic.in)

Clause 5 talks about the electronic trading platforms but not about APMC markets

Clause 5 states that any person with a PAN number or required documents as prescribed by the Central Government or farmer producer organization or agricultural co-operative society is allowed to establish and operate an electronic trading and transaction platform for inter-state and intra-state trading of the produce. It also states that it will be the responsibility of the creator of the platform to ensure fair practices and arrange logistics etc. The clause also gives power to the government to formulate laws for such platforms if the government thinks it is essential for fair trade.

Clause 5 of The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020 (Source: egazette.nic.in)

Clause 5 says, “(1) Any person (other than individual), having a permanent account number allotted under the Income-tax Act, 1961or such other document as may be notified by the Central Government or any farmer producer organization or agricultural co-operative society may establish and operate an electronic trading and transaction platform for facilitating inter-State or intra-State trade and commerce of scheduled farmers’ produce in a trade area:

Provided that the person establishing and operating an electronic trading and transaction platform shall  prepare and implement the guidelines for fair trade practices such as mode of trading, fees, technical parameters including inter-operability with other platforms, logistics arrangments, quality assessment, timely payment, dissemination of guidelines in local language of the place of operation of the platform and such other matters.

(2) If the Central Government is of the opinion that it is necessary and expedient in the public interest so to do, it may, for electronic trading platforms, by rules (a) specify the procedure, norms, manner of registration; and (b) specify the code of conduct, technical parameters including inter-operability with other platform and modalities of trade transaction including logistics arrangements and quality assessment of scheduled farmers’ produce and mode of payment, for facilitating fair inter-State and intra-State trade and commerce of scheduled farmers’ produce in a trade area.”

Again, there is no provision of scrapping the APMC markets in clause 5.

No tax on trade is a problem, says MP Singh

MP Singh further said that there is a provision that there will be no tax on the private markets, which will lead to lesser trade in the APMC markets as there are state fees and state taxes applicable in APMC markets. The provision is in clause 6, but it only states that the state cannot impose any cess or levy under State APMC Act or any other state law.

Clause 6 says, “No market fee or cess or levy, by whatever name called, under any State APMC Act or any other State law, shall be levied on any farmer or trader or electronic trading and transaction platform for trade and commerce in scheduled farmers’ produce in a trade area.” It is understandable that if the farmer has decided to sell the produce out of the APMC market, it is already out of the proximity of such State Acts. Thus, State will not have the authority to impose any tax on the trade.

Yogendra Yadav is behind Red Fort violence, claimed Singh

Towards the end of his speech, MP Singh claimed that Yogendra Yadav and his party is behind the violence that happened on the Red Fort. He said that if the government removed him from the protest site, the communication between farmer unions and the government would be smoother, and the resolution will be reached quickly. He also claimed that Khalistani terrorist organization Sikhs for Justice had announced a day prior to the Republic Day that they will hoist the flag on Red Fort at 11:30 AM, which they did.

India donates vaccines to Rihanna’s home country Barbados, a week after she fanned anti-India propaganda over farm laws

Even as Indian citizens are annoyed by the interference of singer-songwriter Robyn Rihanna Fenty into promoting violent protestors funded by Khalistani separatists abroad, India has reached out to help her home country Barbados by sending a large consignment of coronavirus vaccines.

The Narendra Modi-led Indian government has sent 100,000 doses of coronavirus vaccine to Rihanna’s country Barbados under the ‘Vaccine Maitri’ initiative. On Wednesday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced on Twitter that Barbados had received Made in India vaccines.

On Sunday, India had dispatched two consignments of Covid-19 vaccine manufactured by the Serum Institute of India (SII) to Barbados and Dominica under the Vaccine Maitri initiative. As vaccines reached Barbados’ shores, Prime Minister Mia Mottley expressed her gratitude to the Indian government.

Barbados PM Mia Mottley shared a video of the vaccine consignment being received by herself and her colleagues, thanking PM Modi for the ‘quick, decisive and magnanimous’ action.

Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for 100,000 doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca anti-coronavirus vaccine. In a letter to PM Modi on February 4, Mottley said, “On behalf of my government and people, I wish you to express gratitude to you, your government and the people of the Republic of India for the most generous donation of the Covishield vaccine (under the auspices of Oxford AstraZeneca).”

Mottley’s statement expressing gratitude to India came just a few days after Barbadian singer-activist Rihanna had sparked outrage in India for expressing ‘solidarity’ with protestors who had attempted an insurrection against the country. Rihanna’s attempts to interfere in the country’s affairs had triggered sharp reaction from Indians, especially after it was found that the famous singer had probably tweeted under a paid PR campaign by forces trying to trigger unrest in India.

A ‘toolkit’ accidentally shared by self-proclaimed climate activist Greta Thunberg had revealed that there was an elaborate and detailed plan to start violent agitations in India and get international celebrities to tweet in favour of the agitation. Rihanna’s tweet was copied verbatim from the ‘toolkit’.

For the uninitiated, Rihanna hails from Barbados. She was born in Saint Michael and raised in Bridgetown.

India’s vaccine diplomacy

India, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer, has yet again come to the world’s aid by successfully supplying vaccines to its neighbouring and other developing countries at an extremely affordable cost, besides giving away millions of doses to friendly nations for free. India has airlifted more than 6 million COVID-19 doses to nine countries in Phase-I under its initiative termed “Vaccine Maitri”.

The Modi government’s vaccine diplomacy has taken wings and has delivered vaccines to most of its neighbours. Under the initiative, India sent a gift of two million doses of Covishield vaccine to Dhaka on January 21 and facilitated a commercial contract of 30 million doses with vaccine manufacturer SII. Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives have received India’s COVID-19 vaccines under grant assistance in tune with country’s “Neighbourhood First” policy.

In addition to that, India will send 1 lakh anti-Covid shots to Oman, a close partner in the Gulf. Later this week, India is scheduled to deliver over 5 lakh doses to Afghanistan and send 2 lakh doses to Nicaragua, 70,000 to Dominica and 1.5 lakh to Mongolia, besides the doses sent to Barbados.

Under commercial deals, Egypt, Algeria, UAE, and Kuwait have all purchased vaccines directly from the SII. The purchases are made commercially but need export clearance from the Indian government.

Meanwhile, India has begun the world’s largest coronavirus vaccination drive under which two vaccines, Covishield and Covaxin, are being inoculated to frontline health workers across the country. The country plans to vaccinate about 300 million citizens in the first six months.

Kerala: Congress MLA apologises to Muslims, claims was ‘cheated’ by RSS to donate for Ram Mandir

A day after pictures of Kerala Congress MLA Eldhose Kunnappilly posing while donating to Ram Mandir construction went viral, he has now apologised to the Muslim community for doing so. A report by The News Minute states that in a video, he has apologised to the Muslim community for donating for construction of Ram Mandir.

He also claimed he was ‘tricked’ into donating for the Ram Mandir by the RSS. Kunnappilly alleged that some people had come to collect donation for construction of temple but ‘did not reveal’ that they were associated with the RSS and that the donation was for the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. He claimed that ‘out of his innocence’, he donated Rs 1,000 for the temple construction. However, it was later revealed to him that the temple was the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

As reported by Kerala Kaumudi, Kunnappilly was under tremendous pressure from the party after the picture of him donating for Ram Mandir went viral. He seeks to contest upcoming elections and is preparing for the same.

Earlier this month, another Kerala Congress leader Raghunathan Pillai, vice president of the Alappuzha District Congress Committee, came under fire for inaugurating the Ram Mandir temple fund collection drive. Communists attacked Congress and alleged that they they no right to speak on secularism.

Kasganj: Constable killed, officer critical after attack by liquor mafia, CM orders NSA against criminals

After the deadly attack on a UP Police team by liquor mafia during a police raid in Kasganj on Tuesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of the matter and passed an order to take stringent action against the culprits.

In an order dated February 9, CM Yogi directed action to be taken against those responsible without any delay. The order stated that the state government has been working on the zero-tolerance policy towards crime and that no compromise will be made when it comes to law and order. The CM’s order directs the police to invoke the National Security Act against the culprits.

UP Cops were captured and attacked while raiding a liquor factory

According to reports, a UP police constable and an SI had gone to raid a liquor factory in Nagla Dheemar village in Kasganj district. However, they were captured by the liquor mafia and brutally assaulted. The culprits reportedly left SI Ashok Kumar Pal on the road but took constable Devendra Singh with them. Seeing the SI Pal lying on the road bleeding, local villagers informed the police.

As per the latest reports, one of the persons involved in th attack on the constable and the officer has been shot dead by the police in an encounter. Another accused is still absconding.

On learning about the matter, the police reached the spot with additional forces and admitted SI Pal to hospital. A search was launched to locate constable Devendra Singh. Constable Devendra Singh was reportedly found lying in a jungle. He was rushed to the hospital from where he was referred to Aligarh, However, he could not be saved and died on the way to the hospital. SI Ashok Kumar Pal is said to be in a critical condition and is undergoing treatment at the hospital.

CM Yogi announced compensation for the family of the deceased cop

ADG Ajay Anand, DIG Piyush Mordiya and DM Chandraprakash Singh took notice of the incident and assured the strictest action.CM Yogi has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 50 lakh for the family of the deceased constable and a government job for a dependent. The police are on a lookout for the culprits. The Chief Minister has also directed that National Security Act (NSA) be invoked against the culprits.

Google to share details of culprits responsible for the farmer protest ‘ToolKit’ shared by protestor Greta Thunberg: Reports

Days after Delhi Police had asked tech-giant Google to share the details of people who shared the ‘Toolkit’ to intensify protests in India, Google has agreed to identify the creators of the document, reports Republic TV.

Citing sources, Republic TV reported that Google authorities are willing to share details of the people who created the controversial ‘ToolKit’ that exposed the global designs to destabilise India.

Last week, the Delhi Police had written to Google asking them to trace the IP address or the origin of the document and details about people who uploaded it on Google Drive.

The Delhi Police had asked Google to provide the technical address of the culprits who first shared the documents on Google Drive to instigate riots in the national capital, which was later inadvertently shared by professional protestor Greta Thunberg revealing the dangerous conspiracy against India.

The letter to Google by the Delhi Police had come days after it had registered a First Information Report (FIR) against people who shared the ‘Toolkit’’ that exposed the global designs to destabilise India behind the veil of farmer protests. It is pertinent to note that it was child protestor Greta Thunberg who had shared the ‘Toolkit’.

FIR filed for creating creating disharmony and against the larger conspiracy

The Delhi Police have registered a complaint under IPC Section 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on religion, race), Section 120B (criminal conspiracy) and section 124A IPC. Delhi Police has said that the complaint is against the creators of ‘Toolkit’ which is a matter of investigation and Delhi Police will be investigating that case.

Initially, it was reported that the complaint was filed against child protestor Greta Thunberg. However, the Delhi police had clarified that she had not been named in the FIR and a complaint has been filed against ‘unknown persons’ for promoting enmity between various groups and instigating acts that are prejudicial to maintaining harmony.

The FIR has been filed for creating disharmony and against the larger conspiracy. The agenda was exposed after Greta Thunberg had shared a propaganda ‘Toolkit’ that included a campaign strategy for holding protests across the world over the farm laws passed by the Indian government.

The Delhi Police’s action had come after Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had asked these foreign individuals and entities to ascertain facts and undertake a proper understanding of the farmers’ protest before rushing to comment on it.

OpIndia had extensively reported on how, per the documents leaked by Greta Thunberg, the tweets by Rihanna and Greta were in no way spontaneous and had been planned by anti-India propagandists well in advance. We had also reported the violent antecedents of Greta Thunberg and the organisations she is associated with, that lent support to the violent protests in India.

Former COO of UN aligned body slams Greta Thunberg for misguided activism against India, informs how his admiration turned into disappointment

An erstwhile Chief Operating Officer of United Nations aligned Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) recently wrote an open letter to infamous climate activist Greta Thunberg. In the letter, Mr. Mohinder Gulati, expresses his disappointment with Greta’s politically charged activism vis-à-vis India. On 3rd February, Greta Thunberg accidently posted a toolkit on her Twitter profile which was deleted within minutes. This toolkit revealed the extent of the global pressure campaign against the Indian government.

In his letter, Mr. Mohinder Gulati wrote as to how his admiration for Greta had turned into disappointment. The letter reads, “When I heard you (Greta) in 2018 and 2019 my heart warmed up since we had been advocating that the youth would drive the change for a better future, and you emerged as a torch bearer of that trust. However, I am writing to you with some disappointment that you have started using your well-earned bully pulpit to wade into political issues, such as farmers’ protest in India, which may not be as simple and as straightforward as you may have been led to believe.”

In the letter, Mr. Gulati lays down the four key issues one should consider to form an informed opinion on the Farmers Protest. The first key issue that Mr. Gulati identifies is emissions from burning crop residue. Mr. Gulati chastises Greta on her lack of knowledge on this issue.

The letter reads, “Indian farmers, mostly around Delhi in the states of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, burn about 100 million tons (Mt) a year of crop residue which generates 140 Mt of CO2, 12 Mt of other noxious gases and 1.2 Mt of particulate matter choking a population of about 50 million in the area. Crop residue burning also destroys the nitrogen and carbon potential of the soil, kills the microflora and fauna beneficial to the soil, removes the large portion of the organic matter, and unavoidably leads to increased use of chemical fertilizers.”

It adds, “Smog in Delhi forces young children to skip school and stay indoors, 2.2 million children suffer irreversible lung damage. Your embassy in Delhi can inform you how they gasp for air during that period. Do you support farmers demand to let them continue to burn crop residue and add to emissions?”

The second key issue that Mr. Mohinder Gulati brings attention to is food wastage. Mr. Gulati contends that the wastage of food itself emits Carbon Dioxide and that the sheer massive scale of food wastage in India is enough to be the third largest emitter of Carbon Dioxide behind USA and China. Farmers Protest are against privatization in the agricultural sector, which is the need of the hour to build massive supply chains and storage facilities in order to curtail the shortage of food.

The letter reads, “FAO estimates show that two-third of food is wasted in post-harvest transportation, storage, processing and distribution before it reaches the consumer. If food wastage was a country, it would be the third largest emitter after the US and China. Embedded carbon in the wasted food in India is about 60 Mt of CO2 equivalent. India desperately needs to modernize its agriculture, strengthen market linkages, and invest in the whole supply chain. This cannot, and should not, be done by the governments and should be left to a competitive, efficient and well-regulated private sector. Do you support India to continue with the current archaic systems and waste food that could feed 100 million hungry every year?”

The third key issue that Mr. Mohinder Gulati invokes is the specter of a water crisis looming large in India. With farmers over-utilizing underground water for irrigation purposes, over 65% of Indian ground water is considered over-exploited. Excessive use of fertilizer also remains a serious issue.

The letter reads, ‘India extracts about 230 km3 of groundwater every year of which 90% is used for irrigation. World Bank estimates show that by 2030, 65% of Indian groundwater would be considered over-exploited i.e. extracting more than is recharged by nature. Fifty years ago, farmers in Punjab and Haryana valiantly rose to the challenge of food insecurity and started growing rice in a semi-arid agro-climatic zone to feed the country. It has come at a very heavy environmental cost of severe depletion of groundwater, deteriorating water quality, excessive use of chemical fertilizers and cancer-causing pesticides. India is now food surplus and needs to create incentives to make agriculture less resource intensive and demand driven. Agitating farmers want the government to lock into the current system of growing resource intensive and chemical ridden agriculture. Do you support that?’

Finally, Mr Gulati hones in on the issue of corruption plaguing agricultural markets. The letter reads, “You(Greta) may not be aware but the current system forces farmers to sell their produce through government-established market yards where they have to pay a brokerage of about 2 to 3% and market tax of about 5 to 6%. Market Committees collect this tax supposedly for “rural development”, are controlled by politicians, and their accounts are not audited for years. The revenue is often swindled by corrupt politicians controlling these Committees. The new laws give a choice to the farmers to either continue to sell in the existing market yards or sell to anyone anywhere in the country and that too without paying any tax.”

The letter goes on further, as Mr. Gulati cautions Greta and the readers that strong vested interests are against the farm laws. The new farms laws would bring in transparency which would close the loophole to exploit tax free agricultural income.

The letter explains, “Normally, the market price is lower than the MSP. This is what creates a great opportunity for the broker-mafia. Brokers and politicians purchase wheat and rice from farmers in other states at a lower price (about 60% of MSP) and pay them in cash, bring it to government procurement stations in Punjab, Haryana and UP, sell it at a higher price (MSP) and get paid by check. This is counted as their agriculture income which is tax-exempt.”

“So these brokers, often politicians or campaign financiers, not only earn the huge arbitrage but also convert the cash (generally crime money) to legitimate tax-free income. New laws would bring in transparency and make it difficult to legitimize crime money. No wonder farmer agitation is so well funded. I feel the innocent farmers may not even know the source of this questionable “philanthropic” funding. I wonder if you would support a system of legitimizing crime and corruption money in the hands of corrupt politicians and their cronies,” he adds.

Mr. Gulati closes his letter with an appeal of peaceful dialogue between the farmers and the Government, but warns against the influence of any foreign actors. “Farmers in Punjab, Haryana, and part of Uttar Pradesh have a legitimate apprehension which needs to be addressed through dialogue and not intransigence of either party. India has adequate institutions of Parliament, Courts, Media, and public opinion to allow peaceful protests and open dialogue to solve its myriad problems of poverty and development.”, the letter read.

Mr. Mohinder Gulati then signs off, warning Greta that her credibility to effect legitimate climate policies will suffer if she continues to involve herself in local politics she does not understand. “You are doing a great service to the cause of climate change, an existential threat to humanity that needs to be addressed urgently. We need global consensus for implementation of the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. Walking into the thicket of local political issues, often mired in a battle with corrupt and vested political interests, would undermine your ability to keep the moral high ground to exhort World Leaders into action for a sustainable future. I would urge you not to expend your political and moral capital on controversial local political issues.”, wrote Mr. Gulati.

The open letter from Mr. Mohinder Gulati, former COO of SEForALL, an organization launched by the U.N. Secretary General Ban-Ki-Moon, offers a legitimate environmental insight and criticism of Greta’s activism. This is not just a critique of Greta, but also of hundreds of Indian environmental activists, who don’t seem to have any plan or strategy to India’s environmental crises, but won’t spare an opportunity to contribute to the problem.

PDP MP Mir Mohammad Fayaz showers praise on Centre for its contribution towards the development of Jammu and Kashmir

0

In a major embarrassment for PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, who has been a staunch critic of the Modi government after the government abrogated Article 370, the party’s outgoing Rajya Sabha MP Mir Mohammad Fayaz today lavished praises on the Centre for its developmental work in Jammu and Kashmir.

In his farewell speech in Rajya Sabha this morning, Fayaz, who is due to retire next week, lauded schemes launched by the Modi government, including the Ujjwala Yojana. Fayaz also mentioned multiple Ministers including late Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, former Health Minister JP Nadda, MoS PMO Jitendra Singh and recounted how they had extended support to Jammu and Kashmir whenever help was sought from them.

Source: YouTube

Fayaz also highlighted the penetration of the Ujjwala Scheme that had empowered women, including those in Jammu and Kashmir, to lead smoke-free lives, leading to a healthier lifestyle and saving them time by greatly reducing their drudgery.

“We must acknowledge the good work. I have seen it. Whether it is Ujjwala or any other scheme, when I was the chairman of a committee, we were allotted only Rs 5 lakhs in a year. Today, our people claim that they get Rs 5 crore from the government. Ujjwala has provided gas to our women, who earlier used to get firewood from the jungle,” Fayaz said.

Fayaz further said, “Here Piyush Ji is there, Jaitley Sahab was here, Nadda Sahab was here, Jitendra Ji is there, Pradhan Ji is there. Whenever we went to them with issues concerning our state, they never said no to us. If there was any problem, it was because of people such as bureaucrats sitting in my state. From here, they haven’t said no to anything.”

On the contrary, Fayaz blamed elements in the Union Territory for any problems that impeded developmental work. Earlier, PM Modi had commended Fayaz for his passion for Jammu and Kashmir’s progress.

Later, Fayaz also took to Twitter to express his gratitude to PM Modi for his kind words. He stated that his journey from a ward member to Rajya Sabha has made him more knowledgable about the intricacies of life.

“Thank you Hon’ble PM @narendramodi Ji for your kind words. As I mentioned in my farewell speech, my journey as a ward member to Rajya Sabha Member enlightened me with various intricacies of life. This is how life goes on. I pledge to continue my work for people’s good,” Fayaz tweeted.

Mehbooba Mufti continues to sulk against Modi government for the abrogation of Article 370

Fayaz’s words of praise for the central government and PM Modi came even as his leader Mehbooba Mufti has been sulking against the Centre for invalidating the Article 370 and converting the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories. Mufti was detained on August 5, 2019, and thereafter was booked under the Public Safety Act.

After months of detention, Mufti was finally released on October 13, 2020, after which she railed against the central government for rescinding Article 370 and detaining the Kashmiri politicians. PDP then became a part of the Gupkar Alliance and Mufti was elected as the vice president of the coalition.

However, shortly later, differences between the Gupkar alliance partner emerged after Mufti categorically refused to raise the national flag of India until the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. This triggered a wave of resentment within the party, with senior leaders such as Dr Ramzan Hussain, TS Bajwa, Ved Mahajan and Hussain A Waffa tendering their resignations. Mufti’s problems aggravated after her party managed to win only 27 seats in the recently held District Development Council polls as compared to National Conference which bagged 67 seats.

Navy officer burnt to death in Palghar abducted from Chennai airport, new information casts doubt on dying declaration: Read details

In a shocking incident, a 26-year-old Navy sailor Suraj Dubey was allegedly kidnapped from Chennai on January 30 was set ablaze by his kidnappers in the jungles of Maharashtra’s Palghar district and died of his injuries, the Maharashtra police said on Saturday.

The man was found with severe burn injuries in the jungle of Gholvad in Palghar and died while being taken to a hospital in Mumbai on Friday.

Suraj Dubey, the victim, was returning from vacation on January 30 when three men abducted him at gunpoint outside Chennai Airport around 9 pm. In his dying declaration, the man alleged that his captors had demanded a ransom of Rs 10 lakh.

Dubey was held captive in Chennai for three days and later shifted to an area near Vevji in Talasari area of Palghar district of Maharashtra, 1,500 KMs away from the Tamil Nadu capital.

According to reports, when the abductors’ demand for ransom was not fulfilled by the Navy official’s family, the kidnappers got angry and tied his hands and legs and set him on fire in jungles near Gholvad, and fled leaving him to die.

Following Dubey’s death, an investigation was launched by the Maharashtra Police. Konkan Range Inspector General Sanjay Mohite spoke to media, informing that 10 police teams have been working with their counterparts in Chennai and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, Ranchi in Jharkhand and Mumbai to get to the bottom of the case.

As per the preliminary investigation, it came to light that Suraj Dubey was a stock market enthusiast. The police had sought his bank, loans and shares transaction details. Dubey, a Leading Seaman (LS) who served at INS Agrani in Coimbatore, had exchanged rings with his fiancée at Daltonganj in Jharkhand on January 15.

Suraj Dubey had sought huge loans and was an avid share trader: Palghar Police

Speaking to media, Palghar Superintendent of Police Dattatray Shinde said that Dubey had carried a large number of share transactions through brokering firms based out of Bhopal and Mumbai. He had apparently taken a loan of Rs 8 lakhs, borrowed Rs 5.72 lakhs from a colleague and received Rs 9 lakhs in his bank account from his future in-laws.

Shinde, however, said that despite taking big loans, the balance in Dubey’s two bank accounts in different branches of the State Bank of India was just Rs 392.

These details have cast aspersions on the real reason why Dubey was killed. Consequently, the police are probing all possible angles to solve the case.

Additionally, Shinde revealed that Suraj Dubey had received 13 calls from a particular number soliciting details of his Raipur-Hyderabad-Chennai flight on January 30-31.

In his dying declaration, Dubey alleged that he was kidnapped by three armed men who demanded a ransom of Rs 10 lakh from him. However, Dubey’s elder brother Niraj Kumar Dubey said that the family did not receive any ransom call between January 30 and February 5.

“We are investigating all the possible angles, including whether the abduction was self-staged, with the alleged Rs 10 lakh ransom demand made to get himself out of the financial mess and clear his outstanding dues,” Shinde said.

What transpired between January 30 and February 5?

The Palghar SP Shinde said that Dubey was on vacation from January 1 to February 1. He was supposed to re-join his service for which boarded a Hyderabad-bound flight from Ranchi on January 30.

Dubey apparently spoke to his family members after reaching Hyderabad. He then took another flight to Chennai, from where he was scheduled to board a train to Coimbatore. Dubey reached Chennai at 9 PM on the same day.

Dubey was reportedly kidnapped at gunpoint after he exited the airport. Reports claimed three people pointed a revolver at Dubey and abducted him. He was kept in Chennai for three days after which he was shifted to Palghar, around 1,500 km away, and set him ablaze after dousing him with petrol on February 5. Dubey, however, somehow managed to come down the hill where he was cited by locals, who immediately alerted the Police.

Dubey was quickly rushed to a Dahanu hospital and later shifted to the INS Asvini, the Navy hospital in Mumbai where he succumbed to 90 per cent burns late on Friday.

CCTV footage from Chennai Airport lead police to doubt on Dubey’s dying declaration

However, a few CCTV footage from Chennai airport accessed by the Palghar reveals an altogether different story. The footage showed the Navy man roaming freely at the Meenambakkam Airport at Chennai after landing from Hyderabad. The visuals have led police to question the claims made by Dubey on his deathbed in which he asserted that he was kidnapped by three unidentified men and taken to a jungle in Palghar.

An officer who is part of the probe team to determine the mystery behind Dubey’s murder said Dube arrived at the Chennai airport around 12.30 am on January 30 and was alone.

“Dubey had claimed he was kidnapped immediately after he stepped outside the airport. It is questionable that Dubey claimed he was kidnapped, but had the time to withdraw ₹5,000 from an ATM in Chennai,” said the officer as quoted by the Hindustan Times.

Furthermore, the location of mobile phones carried by Dubey was tracked to determine the navy officer’s last location. The mobile phone details showed that Dubey was around the airport metro station at Meenambakkam, Chennai on the night of January 30.

Dubey’s family had claimed that he had 2 cell phones but it was only later revealed that the slain navy officer had three mobiles and not two, as his family members believed. One of the three mobiles was exclusively used for share and stock transactions.

Radical Islamic preacher Zakir Naik has added yet another gem to his vast collection of bizarre commentaries. After claiming that ‘wishing Merry Christman is Shirk (sin)’, he now advocates his fellow Muslims that ‘masturbation is not haraam in Islam’.

Zakir Naik had on February 7, 2021, posted a sequel to his original video titled Masturbation is not Haraam or Sinful but is Makrooh and Discouraged in Islam’. The original video was released by the Islamic preacher on his YouTube channel on November 23, 2020.

Zakir Naik’s sequel video posted in February 2021

In his sequel video, Zakir Naik said that the video titled: ‘Masturbation is not Haraam or Sinful but is Makrooh and Discouraged in Islam’, was made by him in response to a question asked to him on Whatsapp on November 7, 2020, where he was asked whether masturbation was haraam or halal in Islam. He bragged that the answer to this question was released on his Youtube channel on November 23, 2020, and in less than 24 hours more than hundred thousand people viewed it. On the 27th day, it was viewed by more than a million people. He furthered that his answer was translated into many languages like Urdu, Arabic, Indonesian and reached millions.

The radical Islamic preacher claims that if one can masturbate without doing haraam activities it is not haraam

The Islamist, who acknowledged he is no scholar, said that this is the most common question asked by the Muslims. He furthered that one of his friends has also informed him that on Islam Question & Answer, which is one of the most popular websites of asking fatwas, millions of Muslims have asked this same question as to whether or not Masturbation is haraam in Islam.

Here Zakir Naik reiterated that Muslims have asked him this question time and time again, so he finally decided to liberate his fellow Muslims from the dilemma.

Naik, giving extremely explicit and detailed analogies in his video, stressed that masturbation in not haraam. He added that he can give an umpteen number of examples in support of the argument that one can masturbate without doing haraam activities. Here, he concurred that “70-80-90 per cent of the time a person masturbates involving haraam things like watching pornography, watching blue films… and I disagree with that. But if a husband who does not have a wife, masturbates thinking about his wife… that is not haraam.. what is haraam thinking about your wife?” questioned Naik.

Zakir Naik furthered that the scholars who argue that masturbation is haraam give only one evidence that is from Quran’s chapter number 23 verse number 5-7, where it says that the believers are those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts, from illegal sexual acts), except from their wives or that their right hands possess. But whoever seeks beyond that are transgressors.

He stressed that the first few scholars of Islam decreed that these verses include masturbation and that became the belief, however, now there are some who remain silent on this, some still agree while some disagree.

‘Prophet says it your private part, it is your fluid, you can emit it as you want’: Zakir Naik

Dissecting the verse of the Quran, Zakir Naik said “that it is written ‘to guard your private parts’…but natural, there is no explicit verse in the Quran which says that masturbation is prohibited. And what we realise from this verse it means sexual intercourse”, added Zakir Naik, furthering that “the Prophet has permitted a man to touch his private parts as long as it is done with your left hand… no problem. The prophet has also said that it is your fluid, you can emit it as you want, so since that is what you exactly do in masturbation it is not haraam”, argued the Islamic hate preacher.

Furthering with the gory details, Zakir Naik explains that masturbation is of two types. One is self-stimulation and the other is your spouse or your sexual partner stimulating you. And no scholar ever says that your wife is not permitted to touch your private part. Based on this, surely the other type of masturbation where your wife touches is permitted, so when you can enjoy with your wife touching your private parts then why can’t you do it yourself, argued Naik.

Zakir Naik’s first video posted last year

All in all, the radical Islamist is totally convinced and wants all his followers to believe that if done in the right way, whatever he means by that, masturbation is not haraam.

He emphasised that since there is no evidence in the Quran and the Sunna to prohibit masturbation, he puts it in the ‘Makrooh’ (discouraged) category.

Zakir Naik and his bizarre commentaries

This is by far one of the most bizarre commentaries that the radical preacher has ever stated. Previously in one of his videos, he told his Muslim followers that wishing Merry Christmas is ‘Shirk’ (sin), and by doing so you are creating your place in hell.

Earlier, on being asked by a ‘Muslim brother’ whether a Muslim can become a bureaucrat in a democratic country like India, Zakir Naik replied, “If you can follow the ‘deen‘ (religion), then, it is permissible. Else, it is not”. Zakir Naik had explained that the only reason a Muslim should become a bureaucrat is to spread the religion and perform his religious duty.

He had also declared that despite his noble efforts of “taking the side of Muslims” and “showing the ugly face of oppressors”, NDTV’s star journalist Ravish Kumar will not find a place in the ‘Jannah’ or Muslim heaven.
