Assam: Farooq sexually harasses college student in his auto-rickshaw, flashes private part in front of her, arrested

On Wednesday, 21st August, a disturbing event came to the fore that has sent shock waves across the Cachar district in Assam. A female student from Assam University was sexually harassed by an autorickshaw driver on her way home from college. The terrifying incident happened on August 19th while the research scholar student was making her way back to her home in Irongmara village.

The student had just finished her lectures, according to the local reports, when she got into an autorickshaw being driven by a man identified as Badrujaman Farooq. In an unusual request for a passenger, Farooq asked that she take the front seat next to him. The student obeyed even though she was hesitant at first since she didn’t want to cause trouble.

Halfway through a trip, the scenario apparently took a scary turn when Farooq made an effort to harass the student sexually. He allegedly exposed himself in a blatant act, shocking and frightening the student. He unbuttoned his pants displaying his private part in the open. The student quickly responded, jumping from the speeding vehicle and racing away from the spot. Afterwards, she gathered up the courage to notify the university administration about the ordeal and reported the event to the local police.

The student body was swiftly incensed by the occurrence. As a show of support, the student union at the university and other students began a thorough search for the accused. Their efforts paid off on August 20th, the evening of Bakirnagar, Cachar, when Farooq was captured and turned over to the police. He has been held while the legal process is ongoing.

Tensions have increased on the Assam University campus as a result of the incident, and students are calling for the local government to take prompt, decisive action to guarantee everyone’s safety and security. The university community is stressing the need for a safer environment for all students and is pushing for tighter steps to prevent incidents like this in the future.

YSRCP’s Jagan Mohan Reddy named in new controversy, TDP says former CM spent Rs 3.62 crores on egg puffs in 5 years

Jagan Mohan Reddy, the former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, has come under scrutiny for allegedly overspending on snacks while serving as the CM of the state. The TDP, which is in power, and the YSRCP are making heated exchanges against each other over the costs that Reddy’s administration has expended on snacks.

According to the TDP, over the previous five years, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) allegedly spent an extraordinary amount of Rs 3.62 crores on egg puffs. According to reports, the CMO spent an average of Rs 72 lakhs a year on these snacks, which equates to 993 egg puffs eaten every day. This further amounts to 18 lakh egg puffs consumed throughout the course of the five-year span.

These disclosures have raised severe questions regarding possible government money misappropriation under Reddy’s leadership.

The issue arose when the Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP government opened a comprehensive probe into the financial irregularities of the previous government. The “Egg Puff Scandal” has only made the state’s political unrest worse. Several scandals under Jagan’s leadership had already sparked debates, such as the disproportionate amount of money spent on his security, the building of Rushikonda Palace, and the use of exclusive aircraft and helicopters for private use.

Meanwhile, supporters of the YSRCP declared that the TDP was purposefully trying to damage Jagan’s and the party’s credibility with the “egg puff scandal.” Supporters of the YSRCP called the most recent controversy “fake news” and said that, between 2014 and 2019, the previous TDP administration had spent Rs 8.5 crore on snacks for former Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and his son Lokesh.

In a quick response, the TDP labeled the YSRCP’s accusations as fraudulent with no foundation. The TDP’s social media division refuted the allegations on many platforms, charging that the YSRCP was disseminating false information to divert attention away from the true problem—that is, Jagan Mohan Reddy’s purported mishandling of finances.

Love Jihad: Ziaul Haq pretends to be Hindu to befriend a girl, rapes and blackmails her, assaults and issues death threats after she refuses to convert to Islam

A case of ‘love jihad’ has come to light in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, where a complaint was lodged on 14th August against a Muslim driver named Ziaul Haq alias Zia who hid his religious identity and raped a Hindu girl. He even recorded her obscene videos and blackmailed her. He pressured her to embrace Islam and marry her, however, she refused and was assaulted by him. Notably, he similarly sexually abused and blackmailed other Hindu girls as well. The authorities arrested him on 20th August.

The case pertains to the Mahanagar police station area of central Lucknow where the victim submitted a complaint which revealed that she does domestic work at a Muslim doctor’s residence. The accused who is originally from the Barabanki district lived near the house. He befriended her by claiming to be a Hindu. One day, he took her to a hotel under the pretext of having tea. He then gave her drugs to render her unconscious and sexually violated her. He also took offensive images and videos of her during the heinous act and continued to sexually exploit her repeatedly by threatening to make them viral online. After some days, he demanded Rs 1 lakh from her in exchange for deleting them.

She somehow managed to collect a small amount and handed it over to him, however, the perpetrator sent the footage and photographs to some of her relatives. Afterwards, he started to force her to become Muslim and do Nikah (Islamic wedding ceremony) with him. The distressed female blocked his number but he relentlessly harassed her by calling and texting through different numbers. He then proceeded to torment her when she went outside after she barred those numbers as well. One day he stopped her on the way and declared, “If you don’t marry me, I will tear your body into pieces. I won’t threaten you anymore. I will only show you.” OpIndia has a copy of the complaint.

The victim mentioned that she was extremely depressed due to Ziaul Haq’s torture and threats. She also feared danger to her life and property. The complaint featured the name of another Hindu from the Other Backward Class (OBC) category who unveiled that the offender had also similarly harassed her.

The police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against him under sections 115 (2), 123, 308 (2), 352, 351 (2), 126 (2), 77 and 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) along with the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act. The cops have already nabbed him. Further investigation and legal action into the case are underway.

TISS bans controversial students’ organsiation Progressive Students Forum (PSF), says it was misleading students

0

On 19th August, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Mumbai banned the student organisation Progressive Students Forum (PSF). The organisation is affiliated to Left-leaning Students Federation of India (SFI). In its notice issued banning PSF, TISS said that it has been misleading students and defaming the institute. Earlier in April, TISS banned PhD student and PSF member Ramadas Prini Sivanandan for repetitive misconduct and anti-national activities.

The notice banning the organisation was signed by Registrar Professor Anil Sutar. TISS designated PSF as an “unauthorised and illegal forum” on its campus and accused them of misleading students, obstructing the functioning of the institute, creating division among the students and faculty and defaming the institute. The notice read, “This group has been engaging in activities that obstruct the institute’s functions, defame the institute, demean members of our community, and create divisions among students and faculty. It has been observed that this group is misleading, distracting and misguiding students from their academic pursuit and harmonious life in the campus.”

TISS has prohibited PSF members from organising or participating in any events on the campus and warned them if they attempt to do so it “will be met with immediate intervention and consequences”. TISS further urged the students to report any encounters with PSF members to campus security which will handle the reporting with the utmost confidentiality. Stating that the institute is committed to maintaining a safe and collaborative academic environment, TISS said, “Any student or faculty member found supporting, associating with, or propagating the group’s divisive ideologies will face disciplinary action as per institute policies,” in the notice.

TISS student and PSF member suspended for two years for anti-national activities

A PhD candidate at TISS, Ramadas Prini Sivanandan, was suspended for two years on 18th April for “repeated misconduct and anti-national activities.” The suspension followed his involvement in a protest march against the central government’s policies, which the institute viewed as a breach of discipline. The suspension also barred him from TISS campuses and cited a show-cause notice questioning his actions, including screening controversial documentaries and organising unauthorised events. Ramadas, a member of the Student Federation of India, is accused of using the institute’s resources for political purposes, which the administration claims tarnishes the institution’s reputation.

PSF’s controversial history

According to a report in the Indian Express, the members of PSF expressed surprise over the timing of the ban as it happened minutes before their planned signature campaign to submit a complaint to the TISS Chancellor concerning several issues. They were planning to challenge the ban. PSF has got into a lot of controversies over the past couple of years. In January 2023, PSD participated in he screening of the controversial BBC documentary “India: The Modi Question” inside the campus despite the ban imposed on the documentary by the government of India.

In March 2023, PSF protested outside the director’s house claiming that the administration did not allow them to hold the Bhagat Singh Memorial Lecture (BSML) by propagandist Harsh Mander and JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh. In November 2023, they opposed the changes brought in the TISS admission process where TISS discontinued its entrance test and said admissions would be based on the results of CUET.

OpIndia went through the history of PSF on social media and found the organisation has consistently supported the “Palestinian cause” and posted anti-Israel content. In one of the posts, they used the highly objectionable and controversial slogan “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” which talks about eradicating Israel from the map. The post came just five days after the brutal terrorist attack on Israel by Hamas that killed 1,300 Israelis and foreigners.

In another post, they expressed solidarity with Newsclick’s Prabir Purkayastha who was booked under UAPA for allegedly taking money from China for anti-India activities. The Delhi Police arrested Newsclick founder and editor Prabir Purkayastha and HR head Amit Chakravarty on 3rd October 2023 under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. Delhi Police raided and sealed the NewsClick office on the same day in relation to the case involving foreign funding from China to spread narratives that were critical of India.

PSF was also part of the statement issued by six student’ organisations in April 2024 against the circular issued by the TISS administration on the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for the students and staff around the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. PSF was active on the campus for over a decade. Members of PSF held several Student Union positions including the vice-president of the outgoing SU.

‘Withdrawn, not cancelled’: BJP leader Amit Malviya says specific notification incorporating social justice in lateral entries likely to follow

A day after the Union government withdrew notifications calling for Lateral entries into the government services, BJP leader Amit Malviya said that the opposition was “needlessly excited” and claiming victory over the development. He categorically said that the notification has been “withdrawn, not cancelled” and added that a more specific notification is likely to follow. He emphasised that it will clearly state guidelines and incorporate social justice so that usual suspects can’t vitiate the environment.

In a post on X, the BJP Social media Head further stated that the Modi government is “revisualising the circular” in line with its commitment to delivering social Justice as well as keeping in view the representation received from industry and social groups.

In a lost post on X, Malviya also came down heavily on the Congress party for not following principles of social justice, and sidelining SCs, STs, and OBCs. He accused the grand old party stating that the Congress party brought lateral entrants into government service in an opaque manner, without any transparency. He added that such decisions were made as per the whims and fancies of a few selected leaders close to the family or from the family.

He compared the Modi government viz-a-viz previous Congress governments over the issue of Lateral entries brought during their respective times.

Malviya wrote, “Modi Govt wants to ensure that lateral entries through UPSC are done in a transparent, institutionalised manner, and are consistent with the principles of social justice and reservation…The Congress hates the transparency around Lateral entries. They prefer ad-hocism and opaqueness, compared to institutionalised processes…”

He further stated, “In 2018, Modi Govt institutionalized lateral entries through UPSC, removing the opaqueness in the process, and putting an end to ad-hoc entries into the system.”

Malviya also cited a few examples of lateral entrants during the Congress government, right from the time of Jawaharlal Nehru to the National Advisory Council during the UPA era. He highlighted that Nehru brought his sister, Vijay Laxmi Pandit as a lateral entrant and appointed her to key ambassadorial positions.

He slammed the Congress party for sidelining SCs, STs, and OBCs and not incorporating social justice when it appointed persons in the NAC.

Malviya said, “Even the National Advisory Council that played an active role in governance during the ten years of the UPA had several lateral entrants, but all those admissions were done without being inclusive towards SCs, STs, and OBCs. One of the members of the NAC was Jean Dreze, who was recently seen in Delhi, holding a pro-Palestine protest. Harsh Mander, the controversial former IAS officer, was also part of NAC. Similarly, other high-profile lateral entrants like Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Nandan Nilekani, and others were also taken in without a proper process…”

Citing the withdrawal of the Land Acquisition bill and the three farm laws, the BJP leader said that flexibility and sensitivity remain the key for the Modi government which is open to feedback. He also highlighted that several bills were sent to the Standing Committees for review before the Waqf Amendment Bill. He added that nothing has changed and the opposition can claim moral victory all they want but they will unlikely get an issue to agitate.

Congress systematically discriminated against SCs, STs, and OBCs by designating govt-aided institutions as minority institutions: Amit Malviya

Malviya lambasted the Congress party for systematically discriminating against the SCs, STs, and OBCs and denied them reservation benefits by designating many Govt aided institutions – like the Jamia Millia in 2011 or AMU since 1981 – as minority institutions.

He said, “By giving minority status to Jamia Milia Islamia in 2011, when UPA was in power, the Congress deprived thousands of deserving backward students of their Constitutional right to avail the benefit of reservation. In the case of AMU, the Congress under Indira Gandhi, in 1981, brought in a law to nullify SC’s verdict of 1968 to reinstate minority status to AMU.”

He added, “Therefore, the Congress has much to answer on reservations and empowerment of the socially marginalised communities.”

Lateral Entry notification row

On Tuesday (August 20), the central government took a U-turn two days after the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) called applications for lateral entry into the government service

The Centre sent a letter to the UPSC requesting the withdrawal of an advertisement that invited applications for lateral entry into 45 positions of joint secretaries, directors, and deputy secretaries across 24 ministries on a contract basis. These positions were scheduled to be filled by September 17.

While several NDA partners had also opposed the notification calling for lateral entries into government services, the opposition parties, particularly Congress leaders projected it as their victory. After the Union government withdrew the ‘lateral entry’ notification, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said that it was due to the campaign run by Rahul Gandhi, the Congress, and the I.N.D.I.A. bloc parties.

Nonetheless, BJP leader Amit Malviya has hinted that the opposition’s moral victory is shortlived as the government is working on “revisualizing the circular” and a more specific notification incorporating social justice is likely to follow soon.

Maharashtra: Govt school teacher in Akola arrested on charges of sexual abuse of six minor girls and showing them porn videos

On Wednesday (21st August), Police said that they had arrested a government school teacher in Maharashtra’s Akola district on charges of sexual abuse of six minor female students and showing them pornographic context for months. The accused teacher has been identified as 47-year-old Pramod Sardar. He was working at a Zilla Parishad school at Kazikhed and was taken into custody on Tuesday.

The incident came to light after the minor students complained to their parents about the accused teacher. As per reports, one of the Class 8 students called the toll-free helpline of the Child Welfare Centre and informed the officials about the incident.

On Tuesday morning, the officials of the Child Welfare Committee visited the school. However, to not reveal the purpose of their visit beforehand, they held an hour-long session at the school. As per the Police, the accused teacher, Pramod Sardar, has been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).

Reacting to the incident, the Principal of the school, Ravindra Samdur said, “There was a programme at the school yesterday… After the programme was over the teacher went to meet the students of Class 7-8. The incident comes just days after two toddler girls, aged 4, studying in Nursery, were sexually assaulted by a school sweeper at an English medium school in Thane. It has sparked massive outrage in Maharashtra and across the nation. The residents blocked the Mumbai rail route at Badlapur railway station, bringing train services to a standstill on Tuesday to demand strict action against the accused.

Meanwhile, national outrage and protests have continued over the horrific rape and murder case of the 31-year-old trainee female doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital that took place on 9th August.

‘Bacha andar hai’: Bengaluru couple screams for help as biker attacks them, accused arrested after breaking car glass and creating ruckus

On Tuesday, 20th August, a Bengaluru couple travelling with their kid in a car near the Doddakannalli on Sarjapur Road of the city was attacked by a biker. The miscreant attacked the car, breaking its windscreen and allegedly threatening the man driving the car to come out on the streets. In a video of the incident, the couple could be seen yelling for help saying, “Baccha hai andar (we have a kid with us inside the car).”

The video of the incident is making rounds on social media attracting criticism against the ruling state government for the disturbed law and order within. The video was shared by BJP State Vice President of Andhra Pradesh Vishnu Vardhan Reddy who slammed the state for vulnerable law and order.

“Now a couple with their child was attacked by goons in Bengaluru. Under INC rule in Karnataka, lawlessness prevails with no fear of the police! Such brazen attacks in the heart of Bengaluru expose the terrible state of law enforcement,” he said posting the video on X.

A man appears in the video sitting inside a car and directing the camera on his phone at the attacker who is shouting at him from outside. The enraged motorcyclist reportedly attempted to open the driver’s door before circumnavigating the vehicle and picking up a big stone to throw at it. It appeared to be taken out of his hands by a witness.

The attacker yelled for the driver to open the door when he was unable to do so. The rider flipped himself onto the car’s hood and tore off a windscreen wiper as he tried to drive off. He struck the windscreen with the wiper, shattering the glass, even as people attempted to stop him. A baby could be heard wailing inside the car, and the couple was screaming. The driver screamed that his baby was inside and called for the man to stop.

As the couple tried to drive away again, two security guards attempted to hold the biker. As per the reports, the biker was furious after the car took a left turn without any indicator. The police later intervened in the matter after which the attacker was taken to the police station.

The Bengaluru Police commented on the issue meanwhile and confirmed that strict action against the accused will be taken. “Glass shattered, but so are his chances of roaming free—Road rage ends in handcuffs!” Bengaluru Police commented indicating arrest.

Similar incidents reported in the recent past

The attacks on the streets of Bengaluru have become a new concern in the past few months. Several incidents of such attacks have appeared in the recent past further raising questions over the safety of people on the streets of Bengaluru. In April this year, a video of two men assaulting another man on the road in Bengaluru with a steel rod went viral on social media platforms. The incident happened near Kalyan Nagar on the Outer Ring Road in the city and was recorded on the camera.

As per the reports, 5 individuals were arrested in the case who confessed to having attacked the victim over a workplace issue. One of the attackers said that he was the victim’s colleague at the private dairy firm. The duo had workplace disputes and financial issues among themselves. Given this, the attacker asked his other associates to launch an attack on the victim on Bengaluru streets.

Similarly in June 2024, three men assaulted an ambulance driver for overtaking their vehicle, sparking outrage in the city. The ambulance driver was rushing in haste towards the hospital for speedy treatment of the infant who was inside the ambulance. The accused trio stopped the ambulance and attacked the driver for overtaking their vehicle.

“I was taking a baby from Tumkur to Bengaluru. The baby’s health condition was very serious. While driving, I overtook a vehicle. Then they came and assaulted me. Whatever happened to me today shouldn’t happen to anybody else. Please get me justice,” the ambulance driver said after the incident.

The police later identified the accused as Yuvraj, Manjunath, and Latish and arrested them in the case.

Jammu and Kashmir: Minor Hindu girl raped by Muslim boy in Kishtwar, SHO Zaheer Iqbal accused of shielding the accused, magisterial inquiry ordered after protests

On 18th August, a 15-year-old girl was raped by a Muslim boy in Marwah which is located in the Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir, which led to massive protests by Hindus including Sanatan Dharam Sabha in the area following the high-handedness of the authorities. On 20th August a magisterial investigation was launched into the incident and station house officer Zaheer Iqbal was suspended. According to Kishtwar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Abdul Qayoom, two youths had been arrested and a First Information Report (FIR) had been filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Dr Mohammad Ashraf informed, “Following the incident that led to protests and subsequent police action, the district administration has ordered a magisterial probe and has also attached Marwah SHO inspector Zaheer Iqbal.”

According to him, SHO Zaheer Iqbal, who used force and ordered to lathi charge the peaceful female demonstrators, has been attached to district police lines. Protesters charged that the SHO was protecting the accused and his family. After the protests by the locals against the police, the SDM went to the victim’s hamlet and attempted to placate the agitators.

Meanwhile, enraged people broke into the accused’s home and attempted to set it on fire as he ran away from there with his family members. They were attacked by the villagers on 19th August upon their return, as the situation escalated.

Dr Mohammad Ashraf announced that the village police post will be reinforced and staffed with 12 officers in response to the citizens’ demands. He has been allocated a month by the administration to carry out the inquiry and produce a comprehensive factual report.

“The administration has also deputed two teachers to the village for 12 students of Classes 9 and 10 as they have to walk through a jungle to reach their school in Marwah. Besides wild animals, there are other possible dangers that lurk in the jungles of Marwah,” he mentioned.

The officer added that a group of 20 to 30 females taking part in a protest march “were stopped and being pacified, but due to resistance, one girl got injured,” alluding to videos that have been making the rounds on social media.

He conveyed that the Kishtwar District Magistrate has taken cognisance of the matter and is looking into the veracity of the clips. The SDM implored everyone to uphold the peace and issued a strong warning to anyone caught exploiting the incident to ruin the atmosphere.

“In clarification to the videos being circulating on social media regarding the Marwah incident, the preliminary report has prima facie found that 20-30 women were part of a protest march. They were stopped and pacified, but due to resentment and counter-resistance, the incident seemingly occurred when the police attempted to resist the movement. However, Kishtwar District Magistrate has taken cognisance of the matter to ascertain the facts. The authenticity of the clips is being scrutinised. The general public is requested to extend full cooperation to maintain peace and tranquillity and not to fall prey to any misinformation that may affect the region’s peace,” the official statement read.

A memo was presented to Rajesh Kumar Shavan, the deputy commissioner of Kishtwar, by a delegation of the Sanatan Dharam Sabha, Dachhan, requesting severe punishment for the culprits. A memo was also given to DM and SSP requesting security for the Hindu minority in the Hanzel and Chanjer areas as well as a different plan so that girls won’t have to travel long distances through forested areas to get to school.

‘Hand over Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh’: BNP leader accuses India of not keeping its commitment towards democracy

0

On Tuesday (20th August), Bangladesh Nationalist Party Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir asked India to extradite ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to face trial, accusing her of trying to derail the student-led ‘revolution’ in Bangladesh.

“It is our call to you that you should hand her over to the government of Bangladesh in a legal way. The people of this country have given the decision for her trial. Let her face that trial,” Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said.

The BNP leader claimed that India’s provision of shelter to Sheikh Hasina violates its commitment to democracy. According to Fakhrul, ‘fascist’ deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country due to the student-led ‘revolution’.

It is unfortunate that our neighbouring country has sheltered her. Staying there, Hasina has started a conspiracy to foil the victory of Bangladesh,” the BNP leader said adding that the people of Bangladesh don’t consider her offences as minor.

This comes days after, the Bangladesh Interim government said that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s stay in New Delhi will not affect their bilateral relations with India. During a press briefing, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain said, “The bilateral relationship between the two countries is not influenced by the presence of one individual in a country. Bilateral relations are a significant matter, involving mutual interests from both sides—India has its interests, and Bangladesh has its interests.”
