After championing #MeToo movement, actor Richa Chadha defends working with sexual harassment accused Subhash Kapoor

Bollywood actor Richa Chadha, who was at the receiving end of the public backlash for stereotyping of the Dalit community in the poster of her upcoming movie ‘Madam Chief Minister’, has come out in defence of the movie director Subash Kapoor, an accused in the MeToo movement. Kapoor was accused of sexual misconduct by actor Geetika Tyagi and Richa was recently seen defending her decision of collaborating with a director accused of sexual harassment.

Chadha’s decision to collaborate with Subash Kapoor has raised several eyebrows, given the actor’s vocal support to the #MeToo movement that took the country by storm in 2018. Justifying her decision to work with the scam-tainted director, Richa said she won’t judge anybody until the court passes a verdict. The actor said that she still supports the #MeToo movement as before but added that she doesn’t believe in ‘social media trials’.

“I stand by the #MeToo movement. But at the same time, I don’t believe in social media trials. Unlike other [accusations] that were brought to light on Twitter, this case is subjudice. We must respect the law of the land and the court’s verdict. Till the court passes a verdict, I won’t judge anybody,” Richa said.

Subhash Kapoor accused of sexual misconduct by actor Geetika Tyagi

For the unversed, Subhash Kapoor was accused of sexual misconduct by actor Geetika Tyagi in 2014. A video of Geetika slapping the Jolly LLB director had gone viral on the internet in which the actor was seen confronting the director over harassment at a party. Kapoor was arrested on molestation charges but released on the same day.

In 2018, after MeToo stories of women being subjected to molestation began circulating at large, actor Aamir Khan backed out of Subhash Kapoor’s Mogul. The actor, however, returned to the film and backed Kapoor, stating that the case was under trial. Khan’s return to Kapoor’s film had disappointed Geetika, who had then stated that the industry is patriarchal and only women had to suffer the consequences of raising their voice against sexual harassment.

“The industry is patriarchal. Only women face the repercussions of complaining against sexual harassment, whether in the workplace or otherwise. They are ostracised when they complain. It’s a sensitive decision on Aamir’s part that Subhash shouldn’t be treated badly until proven guilty. But what about my livelihood that has stopped since 2014? Criminal cases take time [to be served justice]and that’s a reality,” Tyagi said in an interview with Mid-Day.

Richa Chadha vigorously supported MeToo victims and called out sexual predators on social media

While Chadha has now resorted to mouthing off platitudes on refraining from indulging in social media trials and respecting the law of the land, it is notable to mention that she felt no qualms in calling out those who were accused in the MeToo movement.

At the height of the MeToo movement, Chadha posted a tweet, essentially indulging in what she now calls as ‘social media trial’. In her tweet, she alleged that a certain Prof Atul Johri of the JNU ticks 8 of the 9 boxes that qualify as sexual harassment and came to the defence of the Bollywood, asking why only the showbiz industry is treated with intense scrutiny while others get a free pass.

In another tweet, Richa appeared to celebrate the resignation of TOI resident editor KR Sreenivas, who was accused in the MeToo movement. Richa said, “If sexually harassing women wasn’t able to destroy his career, then his legacy is now gone.”

The same courtesy of not subjecting the accused to a social media trial was not extended to Sreenivas as it is now being cited to defend the embattled Subhash Kapoor. Before the court declared Sreenivas to be a sexual predator, Chadha gave her verdict and proclaimed that the allegations of sexual misconduct against in his footnote would serve as a lesson for others.

In yet another tweet, Chadha sermonised those who had dared to question the veracity of claims made by the victims of MeToo movement. During the peak of the movement, many had alleged that one should not indulge in slandering others and instead legal recourse to right the wrong meted out on them. However, Chadha issued a warning to such individuals, stating that they would end up on the wrong side of the history for questioning others’ #MeToo experience.

“These stories are word of caution so others aren’t abused and culprits are outed,” Chadha had said in the tweet.

However, Chadha’s latest views on allegations of MeToo against the director of her upcoming movie doesn’t jibe with her two-year-old opinions. Chadha was unapologetically indulging in social media trial when the MeToo movement took the country by storm, slamming the accused and those who questioned the authenticity of the accounts rendered by victims. But, now that questions are being raised on the allegations of sexual misconduct against the director of her movie, she is mouthing off the hoary refrain of waiting for the courts to decide on the matter and not subject Kapoor to social media trial.

Perhaps, it is the familiar Bollywood trait of convenience that is at play, which has compelled her to distance herself from the MeToo movement and defend Kapoor. It is all too convenient and advantageous for Chadha to speak in support of the director now since she has been associated with his movie and risking the director’s ire might harm her future prospects.

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump pardoned his former aide and chief strategist Steve Bannon and other allies, just hours before leaving the office.

According to the reports, President Donald Trump has pardoned more than 140 people, including Steve Bannon, as part of a flurry of clemency action in his White House term’s final hours. The last-minute clemency, announced on Wednesday morning, follows the other pardons he has issued over the last month for the people who were convicted in the FBI’s Russia investigation.

“President Donald J. Trump granted pardons to 73 individuals and commuted the sentences of an additional 70 individuals,” the White House said in a statement.

Steve Bannon was granted a pardon after he was charged with defrauding people over funds raised to build the Mexico border wall that was a flagship Trump policy.

Bannon, a Navy veteran, had worked at Goldman Sachs and as a producer before turning to politics. He was the chief of Breitbart News before being hired to lead Trump’s 2016 campaign in the final months.

“Mr Bannon has been an important leader in the conservative movement and is known for his political acumen,” the statement added. Interestingly, the president and his children are not on the pardon list issued by the White House.

Trump aides, rap performer also have been pardoned

Former Trump fund-raiser Elliott Broidy has also been similarly pardoned, after pleading guilty last year to conspiring to violate foreign lobbying laws.

Rapper Lil Wayne, who last month pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon and faced 10 years in jail, was also in the pardon list. Ken Kurson, a friend of Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, charged last year with cyberstalking during a divorce case, has also been pardoned.

Trump has already pardoned a number of long-time associates and supporters, including his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, Charles Kushner, the father of his son-in-law and his long-time friend and adviser Roger Stone. Trump has also pardoned his former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Biden will be the second Catholic President of the United States after President John F. Kennedy. Majority of US presidents have been protestants, while four were Nontrinitarians. Now after Kennedy, Biden will be the second Catholic president. It is notable that all presidents of USA have been Christians.

Bible comes from his father’s side

The Bible has been in his family since 1893 from his father’s side. He has used the same Bible for all his seven swearing-in ceremonies, including as a US senator and twice as the Vice President of the US during then-President Barack Obama’s tenure. His late son, Beau, as attorney general of Delaware, also used it.

As per the report in Today, The Bible is approx 5-inch thick and has a Celtic cross on the cover. While talking to late-night host Stephen Colbert about the Bible, Biden said last month, “It’s just been a family heirloom on the Biden side of the family, and every important date is in there. For example, every time I’ve been sworn in for anything, the date has been on that and is inscribed on the Bible.”

Biden delayed his ceremony in 2009 to find the Bible

When Biden was sworn-in as a Senator in 2009, he could not find the Bible. As a result, the ceremony was delayed. At that time, after seeing the massive book in Biden’s hand, then-Vice President Dick Cheney had said, “Joe, it’s a big Bible. Just don’t hit him with it.”

George Washington started the trend

On April 30, 1789, George Washington took oath as the first President of the United States, and he used a Bible borrowed from St. John’s Lodge No. 1, the oldest Masonic lodge in New York. Many successors, including George H. W. Bush, Warren G. Harding, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Jimmy Carter, used the same Bible. George W. Bush wanted to use it too in 2001 but could not because of its fragile nature. He then decided to use his family Bible.

Abraham Lincoln used the Lincoln Bible stored at the Library of Congress at his first swear-in ceremony in 1861. President Obama and President Trump used the same Bible for their swear-in ceremonies. Notably, during the second swear-in ceremony in 2013, Obama used a bible that belonged to Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr.

Several Presidents, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, had opted for family Bibles. Interestingly, John Quincy Adams and Theodore Roosevelt did not use Bible for the ceremonies. While Adams was sworn-in using a law book, Roosevelt had to complete his sworn-in ceremony at a friend’s house as President McKinley had died.

United States President Donald Trump, whose tenure as the POTUS is all set to end on Wednesday, is planning to launch a political party of his own, reports The Wall Street Journal.

According to the reports, President Trump has recently discussed launching a new political outfit with his associates. According to people familiar with the matter, Trump’s effort to create a third-front in the US political system is believed to be an effort to exert continued influence in the US politics even after his exit from the White House.

The outgoing president talked to some of his close aides and allies about forming a new party, which he would like to call the “Patriot Party” in line with his “America First” policy. 

Trump’s third party in the bi-party US political system

The decision to launch a new political party by Donald Trump comes amidst the ongoing controversy over his arbitrary suspension from social media platforms and the subsequent fallout between him and some of the Republican Party leaders ever since the violence at Capitol Hill took place. He had received backlash from several key Republican leaders including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who openly criticised Trump and held him responsible for the deadly violence at Capitol Hill.

It is pertinent to note that the US political system is mostly two-party system, controlled by Republicans and Democrats, as third fronts have typically failed to draw enough support to play a major role in national elections. In fact, the outgoing president not only has a large support base but also the resources needed to carry out such a move. 

However, President Trump’s effort to start a new party will likely face intense opposition from Republican party officials as they would lose a major chunk of party supporters to the new political party.

In a major blow to free speech, social media giants such as Facebook, Twitter, Google banned the personal account of Donald Trump from their respective platforms. The arbitrary action by Twitter to ban a sitting President and big-tech companies playing a direct role in country’s politics has now caused a massive shock to the citizens worldwide, invoking fear about big-tech’s intent to censure contrary viewpoints.

Following his suspension, President Trump issued a statement saying that tech giants were colluding with Democrats and radical left elements to silence him and the 75 million people who voted for him.

Kirbyjon H Caldwell, a Texas megachurch pastor who served as a spiritual adviser to two United States presidents George W Bush and Barack Obama, has been sentenced to six years in prison for defrauding investors of millions of dollars.

According to reports, US District Judge S.Maurice Hicks sentenced Pastor Caldwell to six years in federal prison for his role in a multi-million-dollar scheme that duped several victims to invest nearly $3.5 million in Chinese bonds.

The 67-year-old pastor Kirbyjon H Caldwell was sentenced by United States District Judge S Maurice Hicks to six years in prison followed by 1 year of supervised release for conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Caldwell was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $3,588,500, as well as a fine of $125,000.

Caldwell was formerly the Senior Pastor of Windsor Village United Methodist Church, a mega-church in his native Houston, Texas, which has around 14,000 members.

Pastor sold Chinese bonds to followers that were lapsed in 1949

The federal prosecutors alleged that Caldwell and Gregory Alam Smith, a Shreveport-based investment adviser, used their power and influence to persuade people to invest about $3.5 million in historical Chinese bonds. The bonds were reportedly issued by the former Republic of China that had lost power to the communist government in 1949. The bonds are not recognized by China’s current government and have no investment value.

From 2013 and 2014, the accused made $3.5 million from the scheme. The profits were then divided between Caldwell, Smith, and others.

According to the Justice Department, Caldwell used about $900,000 he received from the scheme to maintain his lifestyle and pay credit card dues and mortgages. According to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, these bonds are collectables with no value outside the memorabilia market, prosecutors said.

Pastor Caldwell had endorsed Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential run and was part of a group of Christian pastors who would pray with him. He was also part of the healthy fatherhood and family task force set up by Obama. The influential Pastor had also spoken at the 2000 Republican National Convention, delivered the benediction at Bush’s 2005 inauguration, and officiated his daughter Jenna’s wedding in 2008.

After Mumbai Police leaked personal WhatsApp chat conversation of Republic TV chief Arnab Goswami with former BARC head Partho Dasgupta, Times Now’s Navika Kumar got quite emotional and nostalgic. During her show on these tapes, Navika spoke about her one-time mentor Arnab Goswami. In about 9 minute long monologue, she talks about how she filled in the chair vacated by Goswami after he left Times Now and started Republic.

“The seat I am sitting on, the shoes I tried to fill in 2016 when Arnab Goswami, Editor-in-chief of Times Now left this organisation to start his own venture, to start his own channel. I was amongst the first few people he hired on first go in 2006 when Times Now had to be launched,” she says. She says how she knew nothing about television journalism since she came from print journalism. She says how Goswami was persistent for four months to get her to join Times Now.

She then talked about ethics and sanskar and how those who talk about them are mocked. Navika further talks about the twelve years she worked with Goswami. Comparing Goswami’s exit from Times Now to Republic’s launch to that of a small bird which developed wings to fly away in sky, a visibly emotional Navika said that after Arnab left, the most difficult thing for her was to fill in his shoes.

Navika said that when she was told she will be hosting The News Hour, a show that was associated with Arnab for twelve years, she had his shoes to fill. She then gives a lesson on morality over the allegations over the leaked conversation.

Responding to the allegations levelled by senior Congress leader and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi, Goswami, hit out on him as well as other media houses.

“I request a moment of introspection for media in India. You may not agree with my views, you may not agree with my ideology, you may not like the fact that I launched Republic,” he says. At around 47 minutes into the video, without naming Navika, Arnab talks about the time he quit Times Now to star Republic TV.

“On 1st November 2016, I left Times Now, the channel I had built with my blood, sweat and tears from the scratch. I left the channel with nothing but my briefcase. They did not like the fact that someone was challenging the existing capitalists in Indian media,” he said.

“People say they found it difficult to walk in my shoes. I want to tell them I carried my shoes with me. So nobody is walking into my shoes. I carried my shoes with me and I walked into Republic. I carried the audience with me and audience with me. So people should stop dreaming,” he said.

The Michelin Star chef and recently turned filmmaker Vikas Khanna, took to Twitter to highlight the prevailing ‘review scandal’ in the movie industry and stated that critics had asked him to pay 3 lacs for 3 star-rating and 4 lacks for 4 star-rating to rate his movie. Khanna put out his dismay by saying that he would not forget the communication he received until his death.

Just a few days earlier, the celebrity chef had tweeted about the bad experience he had to face at the hands of some powerful industry insiders and the film critics. Vikas Khanna had expressed that he had ‘experienced favouritism and nepotism first hand’ after one of the critics had asked him to pay the money to review his movie and threatened to destroy him if he did not agree to it.

It is pertinent to recall that Kangana Ranaut was one of the first actors to speak against the movie mafia and the prevalent nepotism in Bollywood. The untimely demise of actor Sushant Singh Rajput last year gave momentum to the movement leading to be more people being vocal about the menace of the nepotism and mafia culture in the Bollywood.

Prior to the above Tweet, Vikas Khanna had said that people often condemned favouritism and nepotism, but did not give an opportunity to the self-made. He added that people admired the ‘gatekeepers’ but were ‘unkind’ to the new. He alleged that many had asked him for money and when he did not oblige, they gave his movie a 2-star rating to ‘destroy’ him. Vikas Khanna, one of the world’s prominent chef, had made his directorial debut with Neena Gupta-starrer The Last Color, which had released in January 2019. The movie, which is a screen adaption of Chef Vikas Khanna’s novel also by the same name, has been felicitated at numerous international film festivals.

The movie also made it to the Oscar 2020 and was a part of the Oscars shortlist. In light of the same, Vikas Khanna was looking forward to the reviews that film critics had to offer. However, the new filmmaker is not particularly happy with what the industry had to offer to his debut project.

The wife of Delhi Police constable Amit Kumar, who was the first casualty of the coronavirus in the force, has given birth to a baby girl on January 15. The daughter has been nicknamed 'Annie', as per the wishes of the late policemen, said the family.

Kumar died from the virus on May 5, following which his wife Pooja and their 3-year-old son also tested positive for the contagion. 13 days after his demise, while Pooja was in a quarantine centre, she came to know that she is pregnant, as per reports.

“Amit always said if we had a daughter, we will name her Annie so I kept it as her nickname. I have also decided on her real name—Ojasvi,” Pooja said. Pooja, who was discharged on Monday, believes Amit has returned to her in the form of Annie’s. “It is my belief…I conceived her around the same time when he left us…also, she looks identical to her father…the resemblance is uncanny.”

Amit Kumar’s widow yet to receive ex gratia of Rs 1 crore announced by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal

While the family is elated with the addition of a new member, they are still waiting for the ex gratia of Rs 1 crore promised by Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal at the time of Amit’s death. Kejriwal had taken to Twitter to acknowledge the sacrifices made by the late Delhi Police officer and declared that a compensation of Rs 1 crore will be granted to Kumar’s family.

Pooja, Amit’s widow, says that the family was recently informed that their son’s file has been rejected by the Delhi government because it did not meet their requirements. She added that they had submitted all the necessary documents sought by the government department but were later informed that their file has been rejected on the ground that Amit wasn’t on COVID-19 duty.

However, Pooja was offered a job in the force for which she has received an official communication and has a test scheduled in March. She is hopeful of clearing the test and landing the job.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister on Tuesday visited the Delhi Police Headquarters on Tuesday to pay his tributes to the “COVID Warriors” of the Delhi Police force whose names were written on the board. As per Delhi Police officials, 33 police officials had died of COVID-19 and none of them had received the ex-gratia of ₹1 crore as announced by the Delhi government.

Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government fails to honour promises of compensating police officials for their COVID-19 duty

A report published last month stated that Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi had rejected claims filed by 12 out of 15 families of police personnel who died of coronavirus while on duty. The Arvind Kejriwal government rejected the files on the grounds that the police officials were not on COVID-19 duty.

As per the report, at least 31 police officers in Delhi have lost their lives due to coronavirus. Of these, 15 were on coronavirus duty. Of these 15, 12 claims were rejected while 3 were pending with the Delhi government.

The report cited a case of Delhi Police constable Yogendra Prasad Yadav, who lost his life while on COVID duty. He was posted at the Paschim Vihar police station in outer Delhi and succumbed to the virus on July 7, 2020. He was sent across to ensure that the residents of Delhi follow lockdown norms. However, the Delhi government, after making lofty promises of compensating frontline workers including police personnel for their COVID-19 duty, rejected Yadav’s claim as well.

The rejection letter by Delhi government reads, “the deceased was performing his routine duty assigned to him and was not deployed for Covid-19 duty, which is a mandatory condition to become eligible for grant of ex gratia of Rs 1 crore.” Yadav’s father, questioning Delhi Government on the definition of ‘COVID duty’ requested the Delhi Chief Minister to keep his promise.

Aruna Sharma, the wife of Inspector Sanjay Sharma, who also died of the coronavirus in August, said that she too had received a rejection letter from the Delhi government. She said she had approached the chief minister’s office via phone and requested the officials for an audience of 5 minutes to present her case before them. Sharma says she fails to comprehend how the Delhi government could reject her husband’s eligibility when he was posted in Police Control Room Unit and was taking rounds of all the red zones as well.

Income Tax raids underway at 28 properties of Christian Evangelist Paul Dhinakaran in Tamil Nadu

The Income Tax department is carrying out raids at 28 locations in Chennai, Coimbatore and other places connected to controversial Christian Evangelist Paul Dhinakaran and his Christian missionary organisation ‘Jesus Calls’.

According to the reports, the Income Tax sleuths on Wednesday raided 28 premises associated with Dinakaran, including the ‘Jesus Calls’, an organisation run by Evangelist Paul Dhinakaran that preaches Christianity across Tamil Nadu.

The Karunya Institute of Technology and Science was raided too, as per reports.

The IT officials carried out searches at properties belonging to Dhinakaran at Chennai, Coimbatore and various other locations in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday morning. The Income Tax department also raided the Karunya Christian School, run by the Christian organisation.

The IT raids were conducted based on complaints of tax evasion and foreign funds irregularities against Dhinakaran and ‘Jesus Calls’.

Paul Dhinakaran, who is the son of the late televangelist DGS Dhinakaran, has a large follower base among Christians in Tamil Nadu and runs several organisations.

He added that the selection process has been honest and without any bribery, corruption or favouritism. Not even a single selection can be doubted or questioned.

CM Yogi was addressing a function organized to distribute appointment letters to 436 newly selected assistant teachers of secondary education and associate professors at his government residence. Six selected candidates were given appointment letters by CM Yogi, while the rest got the appointment letters from public representatives.

Over four lakh youth will get government jobs by March 2021

CM Yogi Adityanath said, “By March 19, 2021, the present state government will complete a four-year term. The dream of a government job for four lakh youths will be fulfilled by then.” He further added that Mission Rozgar would continue at its pace. Deputy Chief Minister Dr Dinesh Sharma said that the Department of Secondary Education of the state has an example of a transparent system. All arrangements, including new appointments, transfers and results, are now online.

It has to be noted that in December 2020 36,950 assistant teachers were appointed for council government schools. In August 2020, 31,227 assistant school teachers were given appointment letters.

Posting of teachers was based on their preference

Vinay Pandey, Director of Secondary Education, said that the teachers had been given the facility to choose the schools in the order of preference as per their wish. The selected candidates praised the Uttar Pradesh government for transparency and said that they had not imagined transparency at this level. They further added that under this regime, they are getting posting as per their choice.

114 female and 24 male candidates have been selected for the post of assistant teacher of arts in government schools. The remaining 298 candidates, out of which 189 were women, and 109 were men, have been chosen as lecturers.

Over 1.5 crore youths now self-employed

During his address, Yogi Adityanath said that in less than four years, the government had provided support to over 1.5 crore youths in the state to be self-employed.

Maximum recruitments in the police department

Since 2017, the Uttar Pradesh government has provided maximum government jobs in the police department. So far, 1,37,253 police personnel have been appointed in the state. The second department to get maximum appointments is education. Over 54,000 jobs have been provided in the primary education department.

As per the reports, over 16,000 posts in the police department, 69,000 posts in the primary education department, and 5,000 posts in UPSSSC will be filled soon. There are over 28,000 vacant posts in different departments, including transport, PWD and others, for which the process will be commenced soon.
