Indian Muslims do not stand to suffer due to the CAA-NRC combo: Here are the laws and guidelines explained

There has been a lot of debates, claims, counter-claims and misinformation being circulated over the CAA and the NRC. Looking at the ground reports of the protests it is evident that a lot of misinformation ie being spread among the people to create unrest. This article is an attempt to simplify the CAA and the NRC for easy understanding.

The most recent criticism in regard to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) enacted by both Houses of Parliament is that it isn’t the CAA that is the problem. It is its combination with the National Register of Citizens (NRC) which presents an evil where Muslims will suffer.

Numerous articles and social media posts by citizenry has put forth an illustration of how this combined effect creates an evil outcome. This article will dissect that illustration. Unlike most analyses which contain bland assertions without any links to relevant documents, this article contains links for the reader’s independent review.

Lastly, this analysis will also offer suggestions to the Modi government to make this process robust.

The CAA Pool

It is critical to mention that, before this dissection, the CAA must be fully understood in regard to what it does and doesn’t do given the extent of rumours and misrepresentations floating around.

[The law can be read here whereas the author has extensively elaborated upon the CAA and its contours in previous articles – click here and here.

At the cost of repetition, it is useful to outline two vital aspects of the CAA.

1.  Members of six religions, that is Christians, Buddhists, Parsis, Jains, Sikhs and Hindus fleeing three countries, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh can apply for Indian citizenship if they can demonstrate a physical presence in India of five years as opposed to the regular eleven years mentioned in the Citizenship Act, 1955. The offence of illegal migration into India is pardoned.

2.  They can only get this benefit if they entered India on or before December 31, 2014.

For the sake of brevity, we will collectively call these beneficiaries members of ‘CAA Pool’.

Illustration deployed by critics

The illustration deployed by critics, quite simply, is this:

If the NRC is implemented inefficiently and results in a situation where two Indian citizens – a Hindu and a Muslim – are determined as ‘non-Indians’ due to lack of documentation (we’ll call it the ‘NRC Net’), the Hindu could still save himself from harassment by entering the CAA Pool. The Muslim will suffer. He would likely be sent to a detention centre and would have to appear before tribunals to prove his Indian nationality.

Analysis

(i) Nationwide NRC not yet announced

At the outset, it is useful to mention the obvious. No nationwide NRC has been announced yet and, hence, any comparison with the requirements/criteria of Assam NRC is plainly misguided. Assam NRC is an exercise guided by an entirely different set of circumstances. In fact, Amit Shah himself suggested that the Assam NRC has demonstrated shortcomings which will guide the Modi government in formulating the nationwide NRC procedure.

(ii) Chronology

As clearly evidenced in the statements of Home Minister Amit Shah and others in the BJP, CAA has already been enacted as a law by both Houses of Parliament whereas NRC system hasn’t even been announced, let alone its criteria determined. CAA will, therefore, be rolled out first followed by a nationwide NRC.

Another vital aspect is that all beneficiaries under CAA – the entire CAA Pool – will be eligible to apply for Indian citizenship in less than 10 days, i.e., when they reach the five-year residency period on 31.12.2019. Indeed, it is possible that not everyone would apply right away. But, at the very least, it cannot be argued that the CAA Pool will continue to expand after 31.12.2019 with more beneficiaries becoming eligible in the next few years even after the NRC is rolled out.

Advice: Modi government should ideally announce a deadline well before the intended roll-out of the NRC and widely publicize it so that everyone in the CAA Pool applies for Indian citizenship before that deadline. That way, the operations of NRC will commence only after benefits under CAA have been applied for by whosoever is eligible.

(iii) Credibility of claim

If and when the NRC is rolled out, for an Indian Hindu in the NRC Net to subsequently claim he is a member of the CAA Pool will, rather obviously, lack credibility. This is because, in the NRC process, he would have claimed (whether in a form or verbally to the authority conducting the NRC) that he is an Indian citizen. His claim to be in the CAA Pool after an unsuccessful claim to the NRC authorities that he is an Indian citizen would be met with serious suspicion given it would be an obvious afterthought.

(iv) Penalty for misrepresentation

In the remote possibility that the Hindu in the NRC Net manages to hoodwink everyone to obtain Indian citizenship through the CAA route, Section 10 of the Citizenship Act, 1955 authorizes the government to revoke his citizenship on grounds of false representation when found.

(v) Current benefits to CAB Pool – a useful guide for Citizenship (Amendment) Rules 2019?

Since December 2014, the Modi government has issued long-term visas to Pakistani nationals belonging to minority communities, among others, who are “seeking a permanent settlement in India with a view to becoming citizens of India”. In fact, Hindus and Sikhs from Pakistan who entered India on pilgrim visas and did not go back due to religious persecution were granted long-term visas as per a 2012 policy of the UPA government. The policy document, available on the MHA website, can be accessed here. Over the five- year duration of the Modi government, it went on increasing the long-term visa pool including Bangladesh and Afghanistan nationals.

In February 2018, it published a document (available on the MHA website) on the grant of long-term visas with five-year duration to all members who are today in the CAB Pool. The government also permitted them to open bank accounts, carry out self-employment, obtain a driving license, PAN card and Aadhar number.

Therefore, many in today’s CAB Pool are already holders of long-term visas with basic identity documents or are in the process of obtaining one.

Those CAB Pool members who entered India on/before 31.12.2014 without a valid passport/travel document (or who now hold an expired passport/travel document) were asked to apply for long-term visas. See this screenshot:

Direction to apply for long term visas

page3image24248944

Importantly, illegal immigrants belonging to what is today the CAB Pool needed to provide documents to prove their eligibility for a long-term visa. The following screenshots elaborate that.

Documents to prove eligibility

page4image24370288

Documents to prove eligibility

Advice: Indeed, the Citizenship Amendment Act has just been enacted and, therefore, the rules will follow in due course. There is already an elaborate set of documents which CAB Pool beneficiaries applying for long-term visas must provide. Therefore, the Modi government should apply the same criteria to CAB Pool beneficiaries applying now for Indian citizenship. The reason is that permitting anyone from the three countries to claim he/she belongs to a minority religion and obtain Indian citizenship without corresponding documentation proving the basic elements of eligibility would be fraught with risks.

(vi) So, what happens to the Muslim in the NRC net?

If identified as a foreigner in the NRC Net, an Indian Muslim and an Indian Hindu both will be in the same boat. As explained above, for the Indian Hindu to seek benefit by slipping into the CAA Pool will be extremely difficult, if not impossible.

The question, then, is what happens to a Muslim illegal immigrant from the three countries? This category is divided into two parts:

(vi)(a) Muslim fleeing persecution of any type (Shia, Ahmedi, for example)

As Modi government’s document dated February 2018 specifies, such a person, even if he has illegally entered India, will be able to apply for a long-term visa by making an application to the FRRO. The persecution can be on any ground – race, religion, sex, nationality, ethnic identity, membership of a particular social group or political opinion. Such a refugee will be able to take up employment in the private sector or undertake studies in India. This policy continues the one set in motion by the UPA government in 2011. For the convenience of readers, the screenshot is attached here:

UPA policy from 2011

page5image24344592

In due course of time, this category of visa holders will be able to apply for Indian citizenship by satisfying the standard physical residence requirement of eleven years and other criteria mentioned in The Citizenship Act, 1955.

(vi)(b) Muslim coming to India in search of economic opportunities

The government policies, both of the UPA and Modi government, have been clear in regard to ‘economic immigrants’. They are not eligible for long-term visas and are deportable as and when detected, whether through the NRC system or otherwise. Indeed, it is important to mention here that anyone belonging to any religion, and not a Muslim alone, could be an ‘economic immigrant’. The promise of Home Minister Amit Shah to expel infiltrators pertains to economic immigrants. The same screenshot, but with a different part highlighted, is attached here for the convenience of readers:

Policy about Muslim coming to India in search of economic opportunities

page6image24151680The government has asserted that CAA will not affect existing Indian citizens in any way. The opposition’s claim of CAA being in violation of articles 14,15 and 21 of the Indian Constitution also has been discredited by experts. Though the government is yet to lay down rules and details of the nation-wide NRC, the above explanations make it amply clear that the claim that Muslims will be discriminated against is based on propaganda by vested interests.

“Hinduon ke saath khilwad kiya gaya hai”: Watch as Muslim mob vandalises a Hanuman temple during anti-CAA riots in Bihar

A muslim mob attacked and desecrated a temple in Bihar’s Patna on Saturday, December 21, 2019.

As seen above, a Hanuman temple was vandalised by the mob where some miscreants can be seen entering the temple and breaking the idol.

The RJD had called for a Bandh in Bihar on Saturday when the violence took place. During the bandh, the rioters destroyed a Hanuman temple in Patna’s Phulwari. During the bandh, many RJD workers, armed with sticks and flags with RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav’s face on it, vandalised autorickshaws. As per reports, anti-CAA rally was passing through the Tamtam Padao in Phulwari Sharif area and was on its way to Sangatpar. However, Sangatpar residents were not permitting them to enter. Police had also not given them permission to move ahead. The matter escalated and they resorted to violence.

Another video from Phulwari Sharif area shows mob violence between two groups.

While the violence in Patna on Saturday injured as many as 25 people, OpIndia could not independently verify the claims that one person was shot dead in the riots. At least 11 people, including 2 policemen were admitted to AIIMS, of which six had bullet injuries.

Jharkhand results: Key Constituencies to watch out for as votes are counted

The results of the Jharkhand Assembly Elections are set to be declared today. Ahead of the declarations of results, there are some seats that could provide some insight into the larger scheme of affairs. In this report, we shall discuss a few key seats in the elections.

Jamshedpur East

This is the seat the Jharkhand Chief Minister is contesting from. Raghubar Das has held this seat since 1995. However, this time, he is being challenged by BJP rebel and from Das’ former Cabinet Minister Saryu Rai. The Congress has fielded Gaurav Vallabh from the Constituency. The Prime Minister addressed a rally here on the second of December.

Dumka and Barhait

Hemant Soren, JMM’s CM Candidate, is contesting from these two constituencies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed rallies during the BJP’s campaign in both these constituencies. On 15th December, Narendra Modi addressed a rally in Dumka. And on the 17th, he addressed a rally at Barhait. It was in Dumka that Narendra Modi made the ‘rioters can be recognized from their clothes’ remark following the nationwide instances of mob violence. Hemant Soren had won the Barhait constituency in 2014.

Key Constituencies Amit Shah addressed

Amit Shah addressed 11 rallies in the State. As expected, he avoided the regions already covered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Of the rallies Shah addressed, Chakradharpur and Baghmara are constituencies one should keep an eye out for. The former has a JMM incumbent, Shashibhushan Samad, going up against the BJP State President Laxman Gilua. In Baghmara, incumbent BJP MLA Dulu Mahto goes up against Congress’ Jaleshwar Mahato.

Other Important Constituencies as Jharkhand results trickle in

Bagodar is another constituency to keep an eye out for as the Jharkhand results trickle in. CPI(ML) candidate Vinod Kumar Singh had won this seat in 2005 and 2009. But BJP’s Nagendra Mahto had managed to snatch it away from Singh in 2014. Khunti is another seat BJP has held ever since the state went to polls for the first time in 2005.

It will be interesting to see if the BJP manages to hold on this seat this time around. The Sili Constituency is one where the AJSU could have a chance of winning. It had won the seat in 2005 and 2009 but the JMM had managed to snatch it away from them in 2014. The Dumka, Khunti and Barhait are in the Tribal Belt and it will be interesting to see how things pan out at the end of the day.

Jharkhand results: BJP reaches out to AJSU, JVM in Jharkhand as early trends show close fight between BJP and Congress alliance

The Jharkhand Assembly Election results are set to be announced today. Early trends show a neck-to-neck fight between BJP and Congress-Jharkhand Mukti Morch (JMM) alliance. Anticipating that the results might just lead to a hung assembly, according to media reports, BJP has reached out to All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) and The Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM) as a Plan-B in the state.

Per media reports, the BJP leadership is in touch with AJSU Chief Sudesh Mahto and JVM chief Babulal Marandi in Jharkhand with both parties making headway in the state according to early trends.

AJSU and JVM are currently leading in 7 seats while the BJP is leading in 30. The majority mark in the state of Jharkhand is 41 seats.

The AJSU and JVM are likely to be kingmakers in Jharkhand with ruling BJP being in direct contest with JMM-Cong-RJD alliance and AJSU emerging as the third pole of the elections.

The AJSU had fought the 2014 elections in alliance with the BJP and won 5 out of 8 seats. It was also a part of the Raghubar Das government in Jharkhand, however, just before the assembly elections, AJSU had severed the alliance and decided to contest alone. AJSU is contesting on 53 out of the total 81 seats.

AJSU had indicated in before the elections that it will be open to a post-poll alliance with the BJP.

“I don’t want to make the government of any party or individual. I want the government of the people of Jharkhand which works for the overall development of the people… For me, the Congress and the BJP are same,” Mahato had said when asked about whom his party would support if the polls throw up a fractured mandate.

He had alleged that both national parties (Congress and BJP) don’t pay attention to local issues after winning the election.

Zee Media’s video production head Nasir Azmi claims he quit in solidarity with Jamia students. Here’s the truth

Zee Media’s production head Nasir Azmi on Sunday took to social media to claim that he has resigned in solidarity with students of Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University. He said that Zee News has “failed” on matters of covering JNU, Kanhaiya Kumar, Aligarh Muslim University and recently Jamia Millia Islamia.

He also tweeted the same.

And then to get some validation, he tagged political parties and politicians to inform them about his step so he could get some retweets or acknowledgement.

However, the truth seems far from reality.

Zee News’ Nasir Azmi’s Performance Improvement Plan letter.

Sources in the know tell OpIndia that Azmi was already put up on Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) for one month as his performance was not up to the mark. As per the document shared above, his PIP was effective from 4th December, 2019 to 4th January 2020.

On 22nd December when he quit stating ‘solidarity’ with Jamia students and others protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act, one can see it was in middle of the PIP where his performance was being monitored as it was below average. The letter further stated that if his performance does not improve, this PIP letter would be considered one month’s notice period. Effectively, if he does not perform better, he would be asked to leave on 4th January 2020.

Amit Kumar Singh, Senior Producer, Zee News, took to Facebook to call out Azmi’s lies.

Singh said not only is Azmi trying to mislead Jamia students but also lying in the name of Islam. He said while everyone has a right to leave their jobs for better career prospects, the problem here is that he is taking this opportunity to portray himself as a martyr.

He further asked him if it was his conscience making him quit Zee News, why did he not quit when in 2016 they covered the JNU incident. In 2016, Communist Party of India politician Kanhaiya Kumar, who was a student leader back then, Umar Khalid, son of member of banned Islamist group SIMI and one Anirban Bhattacharya were accused of raising anti-India slogans to celebrate Parliament Attack convicted terrorist Afzal Guru’s birthday.

Jharkhand Results: Congress and JMM alliance win with 46 seats, BJP gets 25 seats

The results of the Jharkhand Assembly Elections have been announced. As per the results, the Congress and JMM alliance has won a comfortable majority in the state, defeating BJP.

India Today-Axis exit poll had predicted a victory for the JMM-Congress-RJD alliance. ABP News-C Voter has suggested that in case of a hung assembly, the opposition alliance may have slightly favourable circumstances to form the government.

The halfway mark in the Jharkhand Assembly is 41. The JMM+ alliance is comfortably over the mark with Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) securing 30 seats, Congress securing 16 seats, & BJP securing 25 seats.

History of Jharkhand: BJP’s Raghubar Das becomes first CM to complete a 5 year term after 14 years of instability

The results of the Assembly elections for Jharkhand are set to be declared today. The history of the state of Jharkhand is one of the short-lived governments and intermittent periods of President’s rule. There have been three such phases thus far. In fact, the BJP government with Raghubar Das as Chief Minister in Jharkhand is the first to have completed its tenure of five years since the state was created in 2000.

Babulal Marandi was the first Chief Minister of the State and he was from the BJP. The BJP remained in power until the first Assembly elections were held in the state in 2005. The first Assembly of Jharkhand was constituted on the basis of the 2000 Bihar Legislative Elections and served until the election of the next in 2005. Even before Jharkhand went to polls for the first time, it already had two Chief Ministers. Marandi served for a period of almost 2 and a half years while Arjun Munda served in the position for almost 2 years.

The Assembly that was elected after Jharkhand as a newly created state went to polls for the first time was a hung assembly. Within the next four years, Jharkhand saw four governments. The first and the fourth had Shibu Soren from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha as the Chief Minister. The second saw Arjun Munda of the BJP return as the Chief Minister for a period of one and a half years. Madhu Koda, then an independent candidate, served in the position for a period of two years. In the end, Shibu Soren, whose first stint had lasted only 10 days return for about 5 months before President’s Rule was declared in the state.

The state went to polls again in 2009. Shibu Soren’s third stint as Chief Minister lasted two days more than 5 months and then President’s rule was declared once again for the next 3 months. Arjun Munda then returned to serve as Chief Minister for 2 and a half years before President’s Rule was declared again for almost six months. Then, Hemant Soren, the son of Shibu Soren, took charge as Chief Minister for the rest of the tenure of the Third Legislative Assembly. The political instability came to an end when Raghubar Das took charge as the Chief Minister in 2014 and became the first man to serve his full term in the state.

Interestingly, Jharkhand has never had a Congress government in the history of the state’s existence. Out of the 13 times, the state changed power and/or Chief Ministers, the state had a BJP CM 5 times, President’s Rule 3 times, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha CM 4 times and once, an Independent candidate as CM.

Before BJP was elected in 2014, Jharkhand saw one its most politically unstable period.

Jharkhand CMs

From 2009 to 2014, Jharkhand had 3 different Chief Ministers and 2 periods of President’s Rule.

During the 19 years of its existence, Jharkhand has already had 6 Chief Ministers with two of them already having multiple stints on the Chair. It has also had three phases of President’s Rule.

BJP’s Raghubar Das already has the distinction of being the first CM to complete a 5-year term. If the 2019 Assembly elections do favour BJP, it will be the first time in history that any party gets a second term after completing his first. However, with Jharkhand’s history, the worst outcome for the state would be a hung assembly.

Will gather one lakh people to stop Amit Shah from entering Kolkata if CAA not withdrawn: Bengal minister and Jamiat-Ulema-e-Hind’s WB president

TMC leader and a minister in Mamata Banerjee led West Bengal government Siddiqullah Chowdhury today threatened that union home minister Amit Shah will not be allowed to step out of the airport whenever he visits Kolkata, if the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is not withdrawn immediately. Chowdhury is also the state president of Jamiat-Ulema-e-Hind, and the minister of Mass Education, Library Services and Parliamentary Affairs.

The TMC leader said that the law is against humanity and the citizens of the country who are living here for ages. “We may not allow him (Shah) to step out of the city airport if necessary. We may gather one lakh people there to stop him,” he said during a protest organised by Jamiat-Ulema-e-Hind against the CAA.

Chowdhury assured that the anti-CAA protests will be democratic and peaceful, and they wont resort to violence. “We don’t believe in violent protests, but we will certainly oppose CAA and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) tooth and nail,” he said during the rally at Rani Rasmoni Avenue in Kolkata.

Attacking PM Modi for the CAA, the Bengali minister said that the “56-inch chest” of PM Narendra Modi has let down the people of the country, as he is “pursuing the politics of hatred and division”. “What they (Modi and Shah) are doing is thrusting one agenda after another on the people. They don’t believe in discussion, they don’t believe in dialogue. We won’t let them pursue this,” he added.

Mamata Banerjee and her party TMC is one of the most vocal critics of the, and the proposal to implement the NRC at the national level. The Bengal CM has even demanded an UN-monitored referendum on CAA and NRC. She had said, “If BJP has guts, it should go for a UN-monitored referendum on amended Citizenship Act and NRC,” creating a huge uproar across the country.

Pro-CAA students of IIT-Madras angry over anti-national slogans during anti-CAA protest, say the institute is not a leftist hub as portrayed by media

Protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and Police action on Jamia Milia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University were organized at IIT-Madras on the 16th of December. During the protests, slogans such as ‘Bengal Mange Azadi’ and ‘Kashmir Mange Azadi’ were raised. It was first reported by The South Asian Express. The media outlet also reported that it was not spontaneous as was being claimed.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUY_tZGM21I]

Students from IIT-Madras recently reached out to OpIndia and informed us of the same. Speaking to OpIndia, they confirmed that such slogans were indeed raised at the University. In addition, slogans such as “Brahmanvaad se Azadi”, “Manuvaad se Azadi” were also raised at the same protests. They also made it clear that the protests did not have permission from the Dean and yet, it was carried out anyway. Furthermore, a second ‘meeting’ was organized on the 19th, again without permission which was apparently disrupted by the administration.

Amit Anand Jha, a student of the electrical engineering department at IIT-Madras, reached out to us and told us that there was great distress among the students at the Institution over the fact the protesters were giving the impression that IIT-M as a whole was in opposition to the University. He told us that that there was no such anti-CAA sentiment in the institution and a handful of people with their motivated agenda had gone around claiming that “IIT-Madras is against CAA”.

Poster of the 16th December protest at IIT-Madras accessed by OpIndia

Jha said, “50-60 students cannot represent the entire IIT-Madras. The message they conveyed to the society is that they are students of IIT-Madras and they are against the CAA. In reality, most of them are from the Humanities department and 50-60 of them are claiming that they represent all of us. That’s not gonna happen.”

When asked if the students were from any representative bodies, Jha said, “There is this group called the APSC. Earlier, when they used to make posters under that name, not many students used to come out. So now, they just take out posters under the name of ‘Students Collective’ which is not a recognized body.” APSC is the Ambedkar-Periyar Study Circle. Jha told us that ‘Students Collective’ is the name of the unrecognized body being used by APSC to further its protests.

Read: IIT-B students support Citizenship Amendment Bill even as handful of students from leftist orgs try to protest in campus

Jha also said that he had created a Google Doc and circulated it around the University to gain some idea about the mood in the Campus regarding the anti CAA protests. The Google Doc that carries the headline ‘IIT-M JUNTA With CAA & AGAINST Unauthorized PROTEST’ was signed by over a hundred students at the University from various departments. The Doc says, “As a student, its but obvious to expect that such anarchists are dealt with strong effects and an example is set to all students! Otherwise, the reputation of institute is at stake too!” It also said, “Kindly come forward to prevent the institution from becoming FUTURE JNU!”

The Google Doc circulated by Jha that has the endorsement of 118 students also calls into question the role of the media. It says, “Now, the saviours are in large numbers (around 50+) there agenda is unfulfilled unless they get national media attention. Media as it is being claimed was inside campus for a symposium happening on KV grounds. It’s fascinating to know media like NDTV, Republic TV, Times Now had turned up for symposium in KV grounds (exactly the position from where rally started). The moment sloganeering starts media jumps in from the KV grounds, wonderful arbitrariness of events, isn’t it Institute Police, was standing helpless as media was covering the entire event. Many by-passers asked for removal of blockage of road near KV grounds (aka Gajendra Circle), Institute Police had just one answer, ‘Media Sir!’.”

Poster for the gathering on the 19th of December

A student at the Institution, speaking to OpIndia on the condition of anonymity, narrated a similar series of events. He also told us that although the poster showed ‘Students Collective’, it was actually the APSC that was behind the protests. He also said that most of these students are from the Humanities department. The student was also angry at the media for how it covered the protests. “It has always been the modus operandi, bring the media and pressurize the administration. They will do this every time. The same thing happened in 2017 during the beef protests and even then, the media picked up only one side of the story.” The student was referring to the tendency of the media to blow an issue out of all proportions.

Read: Anti-CAA protesters in Bengaluru display blatant Hinduphobia by distorting Hindu Om symbol to look like the Nazi symbol

The student told us that the media appears disinterested in covering stories that contradict the leftist narrative. “There was a rally for the Pulwama Martyrs, there was a great support for it on the campus. The photos and videos were shared with all the leading media outlets but sadly, no one covered it. This is what happens, right? It doesn’t suit their agenda. It was a huge gathering, over 800 students.”

The same mood was echoed by another student on the condition of anonymity. He, too, said that the APSC was behind these protests. The student, who is currently pursuing his PhD at the University, said, “They do all these things all the time. Antinational things, anti-constitutional things, and then they call themselves the ‘Rakshak’ of the Constitution.. We want action to be taken against them. They are saying stuff like every state should disintegrate, what is this?” He said that these students are very well connected with the media and their version of events receive great coverage. He further told us, “There are some people who want to portray the Campus as Leftist. These are the same people who are behind this ‘Students Collective’, something that did not even exist until recently.”

Sarvesh Kumar from the Physics department at IIT-Madras, who was not present at home on vacation during these protests, was irritated and annoyed by the lack of awareness about the CAA among those against the Act. He said that there was a certain degree of peer pressure working in the whole thing. Kumar says that every guy wants to prove that he is ‘cooler’ than the next guy. “Some girls who may be very studious but don’t have much idea about other matters put up such statuses. Seeing them, the guys also start putting up such statuses. This is the problem.”

“I didn’t care initially but then, when I saw that this was getting out of hand, I read the Act and everything else. I was surprised by the lack of awareness regarding the Act among those who are protesting against it,” he said before continuing, “The Leftist ecosystem is still very strong you know? Sometimes, you’re just overwhelmed by all of the propaganda they run.” “I got to know of the protests from my friends. My main issue is, how can you say IIT-Madras is against CAA and NRC? I am a student here too and I fully support CAA and NRC.”

The students OpIndia spoke to were of the opinion that the overwhelming majority of the people do not really care about protests. We were told frankly that it was unlikely that many would come out and protest even in support of the CAA because most people were just too busy with their academic schedule. But they assured us that if a vote count was done, most people would actually support the CAA. We were also told that most students did not care because they knew it was a law that did not affect them in any manner but most were supportive of it.

The students were also angry with the Humanities departments and were of the opinion that they have too much free time in their hands for protests. They were also angry that a bunch of Humanities students was trying to speak as the voice of the entire institution when, in reality, they did not represent anyone but themselves. One student told us that such activities also had support from certain faculty members of the Humanities Department. They were also upset with the media for coverage that appeared to show IIT-Madras as a leftist hub. Most of all, they were greatly concerned by the fact that “seditious” slogans were being raised at the University.
