A phone call from a mother saved not only her son but around 25 others on the day of Uttarakhand floods: Read details

0

The panic phone calls made by a woman to her son helped not only save his life but 25 others on the day a glacier broke down initiating a flood in Uttarakhand, reports Times of India.

The 27-year-old Vipul Kaireni, who works as a heavy motor vehicle driver at the NTPC hydropower project in Tapovan, got repeated calls from his mother asking him to move away from the barrage. However, Vipul ignored his mother’s frantic calls.

Mangshri Devi, the mother of Vipul Kaireni, kept on calling her son, to inform him that she had seen a flooded Dhauliganga headed his way. Although initially he ignored the warning of his mother, after her repeated calls he was convinced, and then Vipul and other workers rushed towards a dilapidated staircase and took shelter there. Vipul had got married just two months ago, and his wife also saw surging water along with her mother in law.

“Our village is located at a height. My mother was working outside when the flash flood descended. Had it not been for her warning, I and around two dozen of my colleagues would be dead by now,” Kaireni said after escaping from the wrath of river Dhauliganga last Sunday.

Mother informed Vipul about increased water levels in river Dhauliganga

Vipul had left his village Dhaak situated near Tapovan project on Sunday to work for an extra day. ‘On a regular day we get paid Rs 600, but earn double that amount on Sundays. I had gone to work last Sunday to make some extra money’, Vipul said. He received a call at around 10.35 am from his mother who asked him to run.

“At first, I only heard her shouting and did not take it seriously. I asked her to stop joking, saying mountains don’t just burst. She called me again and pleaded with me to move. My mother and wife Anita had seen the water rise 15m over its normal height and engulf everything in its wake. We all ran towards the staircase and it saved our lives,” Kaireni said.

Another worker at the Tapovan project, Sandeep Lal, who hails from the same village, said Devi’s call saved him. He recounted the panic situation saying, “I was inside, fixing a fault in an electricity line. When Vipul called, I ran outside. I owe my life to Vipul’s mother and have learnt never to ignore a parent’s warning.

Lal, who is an electrician said many were saved from that call. Over 100 friends of Sandeep and Vipul are missing.

“They (friends) all have been swept away. The staircase, which we used to reach to safety, was filled with muck when they realized the flood was coming. They couldn’t use it,” Kaireni said. Tapovan village pradhan Kishore Kaniyal lauded Devi’s presence of mind.

Uttarakhand Floods:

A massive flood occurred in Uttarakhand on 7th February after the water level in Dhauliganga river rose suddenly due to the break down of a glacier near a power project at Raini village in Tapovan area of Chamoli district.

More than 100-150 people may have been dead or severely injured due to the flash floods caused due to the breaking down of a glacier near a power project at Raini village in Tapovan area of Chamoli district.

The flooding occurred due to cloudburst and the subsequent breaching of a reservoir near Raini village that destroyed many river bankside houses in the area.

Rahul Gandhi promises to steal money from Gujarat tea traders to fund Congress’ political ambitions in Assam

Senior Congress leader and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi while campaigning in poll-bound Assam expressed his hate for Gujaratis and said that he will take money from Gujarat tea traders and give them to the tea garden workers in Assam.

Letting his hate for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, both Gujaratis, spill on to the people of Gujarat, Rahul Gandhi claimed that Assam tea workers get paid Rs 167 per day wage while ‘traders in Gujarat’ get tea gardens. He did not give any proof to back his claims. He ‘promised’ that should the Congress come to power in Assam, the workers will get Rs 365 per day wage. “Where will the money come from? It will come from Gujarat’s traders”, he claimed.

Rahul Gandhi’s statement comes at a time when Gujarat is gearing up for local body polls.

Ahead of Gujarat local body polls, Rahul Gandhi hates on Gujaratis

Gujarat local body polls will be held in two phases on 21st and 28th February 2021. The polls to the six municipal corporations in Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar will be held on 21st February. The elections to 81 municipalities, 31 district panchayats and 231 taluka panchayats will be conducted on 28th February.

“Islam is a religion of terror and hypocrisy”, says Muslim Kuwaiti singer Ibtisam Hamid after converting to Judaism

0

In a video that has now gone viral on social media, a Muslim Kuwaiti singer named Ibtisam Hamid announced her decision to leave Islam and embrace Judaism.

Ibtisam Hamid, popularly known as Basma Al-Kuwaiti, said that she took the decision after realising that Judaism was more tolerant of women rights than Islam. “I am Ibtisam Hamid, also known as Kuwaiti singer Basma Al-Kuwaiti. I declare my apostasy from Islam,” she said in the viral video.

She further added, “Islam is a religion of terror and a religion of hypocrisy, which despises women, oppresses and violates them, and does not give them their full rights and I am proud to say I am Jewish.” The singer had also slammed the ruling Kuwaiti Al-Sabah family for not normalising relations with Israel.

Ibtisam Hamid emphasised, “My opposition to – and not belonging to – the Al-Sabah family, which rejects normalisation, freedom of religion and freedom of opinion. I show neither loyalty nor affiliation to them.” The decision of the singer, who had reportedly claimed that music was ‘Haraam’ (forbidden) in Islam and sought Allah’s guidance in 2018, to convert to Judaism has taken her fans by surprise. She had once claimed to have been one of the top 10 secondary school students in the country to memorise the Quran.

Her viral video, however, soon drew abuse from Islamists. In a tweet, one user said, “What a shame, she doesn’t represent Kuwait. The lies she said about Islam is disheartening but it’s common for Zions and other bigots to say so. Get out of Kuwait and never look back.” Another user condemned her to the burning pyre in hell. “From the frying pan into the fire,” he wrote.

Reportedly, Hamid does not live in Kuwait anymore. Her request for citizenship was turned down as she is originally from Iraq and the law doesn’t permit even Kuwaiti women to pass on their nationality to the children. Her decision to announce her conversion to Judaism on social media has been dubbed by many as a ‘publicity stunt’. Although several Arab countries such as the UAE have normalised relations with Israel, Kuwait has refused to establish diplomatic ties with the country.

‘Gamchhe pe likha CAA, uske upar cross’: Rahul Gandhi vows Congress party will not provide fast track citizenship to Hindus from Islamic countries

Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi has reiterated during a rally at Sivasagar, Assam that the party will not implement the CAA should it come to power. In quite a bizarre fashion, that has been the hallmark of his entire career, he used a traditional Assamese Gamchha he had with him to further drive home the message.

Showing the audience the Gamchha, Rahul Gandhi said that he had a cross painted over the CAA that was written on it; which means that regardless of what happens, the CAA will not be implemented. “Nahi hoga, kabhi nahi hoga (Won’t happen, will never happen),” the senior Congress leader said.

The CAA, which was passed in 2019 by both Houses of the Parliament but is yet to be implemented, fast tracks the process of citizenship for minority communities for neighbouring Islamic countries. After the CAA is implemented, Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh will have quicker access to citizenship subject to the rules.

Clearly, Rahul Gandhi once again demonstrates the very little regard that he has for persecuted Hindus and people from other religions in the said Islamic countries. Furthermore, most of the persecuted people in these countries belong to the Dalit community.

Thus, for all his talk about fighting for the rights of Dalits and ‘Manuwadi Modi government’, Rahul Gandhi is more than willing to throw Dalits under the bus for petty politics.

Assam had seen significant protests against the CAA when it was implemented. While the matter has been settled since then, it remains a political issue ahead of Assembly Elections in Assam.

Liberals cry foul after Delhi Police nabs ‘climate activist’ Disha Ravi in Greta Thunberg ‘toolkit’ case

Hours after the news broke out that the Cyber Cell of Delhi Police arrested a 21-year-old ‘climate activist’ named Disha Ravi, left-liberals took to social media to cry foul about the ‘shrinking space for dissent’ in India. She is the founding member of Greta Thunberg’s Fridays For Future’s India chapter.

As per reports, Disha was arrested on Saturday for distributing the ‘toolkit’ that was accidentally shared on Twitter by Swedish activist Greta Thunberg. The ‘toolkit’ revealed the global conspiracy to defame India in a systematic manner.

Disha, a graduate from Mount Carmel College in Bengaluru, was picked from her house in Soladevanahalli in North Bengaluru. Besides distribution, she has also been accused of playing a key role in the creation of the toolkit.

It must be mentioned that the Special Cell of Delhi Police had registered a case against the creators of the ‘toolkit’ on February 4 under serious sections including sedition, criminal conspiracy and promoting hatred among groups under Sections 124A, 120A and 153 A of the Indian Penal Code. Since then, security agencies are investigating the toolkit and searching for people who created and distributed the documents.

‘Liberals’ suffer meltdown after the arrest of Disha Ravi

Following the arrest of the 21-year-old ‘climate activist’ for spreading Greta Thunberg files and creating disharmony in the country, liberals began to stir sympathy on social media in favour of Disha Ravi. Supreme Court advocate Karuna Nundy claimed that the activist is the daughter of a singer mother. “Allegations of criminality are ludicrous, to arrest in such a case more so,” she tweeted.

Supriya Sharma, the Executive Editor of left-propaganda website Scroll, had also come out in support of Disha Ravi. She tweeted, “We still don’t have clear details on whether Disha Ravi has been detained or arrested by Delhi Police. But the young climate activist surely has clarity on what it means to dissent in India.” She had also shared a statement by the activist wherein Disha had urged people to continue fight ‘anti-people’ farm laws in a country where dissent is supposedly suppressed.

Congress leader Karti P Chidambaram shared a post by NDTV and claimed, “If this doesn’t rouse the slumbering conscience of this nation, nothing will.” He further alleged, “What kind of a nation are we?”

Communications strategy consultant Kartik took potshots at the current political dispensation at the Centre. He wrote, “Indian government is so very brave! “Disha Ravi, a 21-year-old climate activist from Bengaluru, was arrested by a team of Delhi police on Saturday.”

Left-wing propagandist and serial activist Kavita Krishnan did not hold back after the arrest of Disha Ravi. While taking to Twitter, she alleged, “As I had warned, the FIR against the toolkit shared by Greta Thunberg is no joke, it is the latest flimsy pretext for a witch-hunt of activists in India. A 21-year-old student & Fridays For Future activist in Bangalore has been picked up for questioning on this pretext.”

Writer Mihir Sharma claimed that India proved to be a ‘big superpower’ by arresting a ’21-year-old climate activist’.

On being called out for his anti-India propaganda, he replied, “Bhakts in the replies are solemnly comparing some kid who sets up online climate discussions with Ajmal Kasab and Osama bin Laden. Smartest people in the world, true superpower fodder.”

Toolkit exposed nexus between NGOs, overseas network, political parties and Khalistanis

The toolkit Greta posted on Twitter kicked up a storm and revealed deep-knitted nexus between international celebrities, NGOs, media houses and terrorist organisations directly linked to Khalistani movement. There was enough propaganda material in the toolkit to run widespread campaigns against India.

Praveer Ranjan, Special Commissioner (Crime Branch), Delhi Police had said that initial investigation revealed the toolkit was linked to Poetic Justice Foundation which has close links with Khalistani movement and has been termed as a pro-Khalistani organisation. The founder of PJF has openly supported Khalistani movement and had claimed these protests are just a beginning. “The ‘toolkit’ exposes the conspiracy by an organised overseas network to instigate the farmer protests,” Ranjan added.

Delhi Police has received five-day judicial custody of Disha Ravi.

‘Climate Activist’ Disha Ravi has been remanded to a five-day custody of the Delhi Police by a Delhi Court following her arrest. The 21 year old was a founding member of Greta Thunberg’s Fridays For Future’s India chapter.

Disha was picked from her house in Soladevanahalli, North Bengaluru. The police will question her regarding her alleged role in creating and distributing the ‘toolkit’ related to the farmer protests in Delhi. She is also accused of contributing to the creation of the toolkit.

Her electronic gadgets have been seized for investigation as well. The Delhi Police believe that she is part of a bigger conspiracy although she has denied the allegations.

Disha Ravi, a graduate from Mount Carmel college in Bengaluru, currently works for a company that produces plant-based food. On February 4, Special Cell of Delhi Police had registered a case against the creators of the ‘toolkit’ on farmer protests under serious sections including sedition, criminal conspiracy and promoting hatred among groups under Sections 124A, 120A and 153 A of the Indian Penal Code.

The ‘toolkit’ was initially shared by Greta Thunberg before she proceeded to delete the tweet. The ‘toolkit’ revealed an elaborate effort to tarnish India’s reputation globally by Khalistani organisations.

Google translates ‘God bless you’ to ‘Assalam Alaikum’ in Hindi, here is what is happening

Google Translate, the machine translation service from internet giant Google, was found showing the wrong translation of ‘God Bless You’ into Hindi. When one tries to translate the phrase ‘God Bless You’ on Google Translate, it shows ‘अस्सलामु अलैकुम’ instead of the correct translation ‘भगवान आपका भला करें’. Assalamu Alaikum is an Arabic phrase which is the Islamic way of greeting that means ‘peace be upon you’.

Google showing wrong translation of ‘God bless you’ from English to Hindi

Why is Google showing wrong translation?

In the initial days, Google Translation was based on a static machine translation system in which billions of words and phrases were fed into the system. Then the system was taught to analyze the sentences and come up with the best possible translation. However, the system was not 100% accurate, and as it got advanced with time, the scientists at Google realized that they need a more robust system.

This was when a neural network for machine translation came into the picture. It is an artificial intelligence-based system that learns how to translate between multiple languages and take user-submitted suggestions and translations available on web pages into consideration to improve the translations.

Because the system considers user suggestions, there is a possibility that a lot of users either submitted the mentioned translation of the phrase ‘God Bless You’ or it picked the translation for several sources that suggested the same. What is even more interesting is that when one tries to translate just ‘God Bless’ it shows the correct translation.

The correct translation shows if you search ‘God bless’

Interestingly, if we try to translate the phrase in other Indian languages, it will show the correct translations.

‘Our beautiful movement has only just begun’: Donald Trump indicates he will not quit politics as liberals suffer meltdown after impeachment acquittal

0

Donald Trump was acquitted by the US Senate with Democrats failing to secure the 67 requisite votes, concluding the second impeachment trial on Saturday. Seven Republicans voted with Democrats as the Senate voted 57-43 resulting in an acquittal for the former US President.

Following the Senate vote, Donald Trump became the first US President in history to suffer two impeachment trials and survive both of them. He subsequently issued a statement where he said that the movement to ‘Make America Great Again’ was only beginning.

Donald Trump said, “It is a sad commentary on our times that one political party in America is given a free pass to denigrate the rule of law, defame law enforcement, cheer mobs, excuse rioters, and transform justice into a tool of political vengeance, and persecute, blacklist, cancel and suppress all people and viewpoints with whom or which they disagree.”

More significantly, he said, “Our historic, patriotic and beautiful movement to Make America Great Again has only just begun.” “We have so much work ahead of us, and soon we will emerge with a vision for a bright, radiant, and limitless American future,” he added.

The former US President also said that he will share more information regarding the same in the months to come. The acquittal also triggered a meltdown in liberal circles who were convinced that ‘Orange Man Bad’ would be convicted by the Senate.

Some claimed that the Senators who voted ‘Not Guilty’ sided with terrorists on Saturday.

Others admitted that they had been ‘punked again’.

One Rob Gill stepped over the line before proceeding to delete his tweet and then ultimately, his whole account.

Political analyst at MSNBC, Mehdi Hassan, concluded that Donald Trump was laughing at all of them.

Others claimed that “Twitter has done more to hold Donald Trump accountable for the attack on the US Capitol than the Senate.”

Meena Harris, the niece of US Vice President Kamala Harris who has been in the news in India recently over adverse comments during the ‘farmer protests, concluded that ‘White Supremacy’ had won again.

Then there were those who compared the acquittal to the “sham lynching trials of old” where white men accused of lynching of Black men would be acquitted.

Others consoled themselves saying that the former US President had been held accountable even if he were not convicted in the Senate.

But the sanest comment, perhaps, was that it was time to move on.

As it turns out, a lot of people were unhappy with the manner in which Democrats conducted themselves during the trial, especially their decision not to call witnesses. It has earned Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer great criticism on social media.

Some said that Schumer should step down from his position as the Senate Majority Leader.

The decision by Senate Democrats ‘shocked’ quite a few.

There was a lot of hate towards Republic leader Mitch McConnell as well. The Senate Minority Leader condemned Donald Trump during his speech following the acquittal but that is being interpreted as political opportunism by many.

There were a lot of expletives flying as well.

‘Jerk’ was one of the many adjectives that were used to describe Mitch McConnell.

Speculations are rife that Donald Trump might run for the Presidency again in 2024 now that the impeachment saga is behind him. While most Republicans concluded that the former US President was culpable in the storming of Capitol Hill on the 6th of January, they did not believe that the impeachment of a President out-of-office was Constitutional.

Nevertheless, Donald Trump continues to enjoy great support from the Republican base and it will not surprise anyone if he announces a 2024 Presidential run. His statement following the acquittal does indicate that he is not done with politics yet.

However, 2024 is a long time away and a lot of things can happen between now and then.

Srinagar Police refutes Omar Abdullah’s claims of being ‘locked in home’, says he was already informed about restrictions in Kashmir

On Sunday, the Srinagar Police rejected allegations of National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah’s claims of being forcefully ‘locked up in their homes’.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference Vice-President, Omar Abdullah on Sunday took to Twitter to claim that he and his father Dr Farooq Abdullah were not allowed to move out of their home as security forces have locked them up.

In a tweet, Omar Abdullah said that he and his father were locked up in their home and his sister and her kids were also locked up at their residence.

Omar Abdullah also further complained that his residence staff were not allowed to enter the premises and declared that he was still ‘bitter and angry’.

However, the Srinagar Police refuted Abdullah’s claims, pointing out that the movement of political leaders was discouraged on Sunday after having received adverse inputs.

In a tweet refuting Omar Abdullah’s claims, the Srinagar police said that they had been informed about the restrictions in advance to all the political leaders and were asked not to plan any tours on Sunday.

Reportedly, the Jammu and Kashmir’s unit of BJP has cancelled an event scheduled to be held on Sunday to pay respect to the 40 jawans who were martyred on February 14, 2019, in a suicide attack at Lethpora, Pulwama.

However, the former Chief Minister did not stop arguing with the Srinagar police. Brazening it out, Omar Abdullah asked under what law has he been detained in his home. The NC leader claimed that the police officials could only advise him not to leave his residence but cannot force him to stay inside citing security.

Amusingly Omar Abdullah also questioned the authenticity of the Srinagar police’s Twitter handle, saying that it did not have a blue tick and was not verified.

Pulwama terror attacks

This day marks two years of the horrific Pulwama terror attack that killed 40 brave Indian soldiers after a suicide bomber rammed an IED-laden vehicle into the security convoy carrying them. Pakistan-sponsored Islamic terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) had claimed responsibility for the dastardly terror attack.

The attack on the CRPF convoy took place in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district on February 14, 2019. A 22-year-old suicide bomber Adil Ahmad Dar had rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into the bus. The convoy had 78 buses in which around 2,500 personnel were travelling from Jammu to Srinagar.

In retaliation, India had carried out surgical strikes on terror groups inside Pakistan killing more than 200 Islamic terrorists.

Supreme Court issues notice to Twitter, Union Government on a petition seeking a mechanism to curb hate speech and fake news

0

On Friday, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the union government and social media platform Twitter on a PIL seeking to curb hate speech and abusive content on the social media platform. According to the reports, the petition sought a mechanism to check Twitter’s content and advertisements spreading hatred using fake news and instigative messages through bogus accounts in the name of eminent people and high dignitaries.

The petition filed by BJP leader Vinit Goenka said that in the absence of a mechanism or any law to check online content, social media platforms such as Twitter are being used by some persons to “amplify and call out for activities that are against the spirit of the Union of India”.

“These fake Twitter handles and Facebook accounts use a real photo of constitutional authorities and eminent citizens and common people reply to the messages published from these accounts,” the plea said.

Hearing the petition, the Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde issued a notice to both centre and the micro-blogging site seeking their response on the plea.

The SC notice comes amidst an ongoing tussle between the Indian government and Twitter that escalated after the social media giant refused to remove anti-India and Khalistani accounts that posted hate speech related to farmer protests.

Twitter refuses to remove hate speech content from its platform

A major controversy has erupted in the country after Twitter disrespected Indian laws by refusing to follow orders passed by an elected government asking them to ban anti-India and pro-Khalistani accounts that incited violence on the platform.

The Indian government had issued a new notice to social media giant Twitter directing it to block 1,400 accounts from Pakistan peddling Khalistani secessionism during the protests. The misuse of the social media platform for spreading anti-India propaganda, provocative content and misinformation had irked the Union government. The government said hat the said Twitter accounts have the potential to cause a threat to public order.

However, Twitter had shown its reluctance to comply with the central government’s notice under Section 69A of the IT Act. The social media site has banned only a handful of 1,400 handles, and Twitter said it would not be taking action against any media, journalists, activists, and politicians, citing free speech. Twitter also claimed that they did not believe that the actions they have been directed to take are consistent with Indian law.

Twitter’s dubious standards had irked the government, who had to warn the tech-giant that its patience was wearing out over the company’s refusal to follow the rules under Section 69A of the IT Act. The Indian government has also thought of mulling action against Twitter officials for failing to comply with Indian laws and regulations and promoting hate speech on its platform.

After an ultimatum from the government, Twitter finally took action against handles and removed 97% of such accounts. However, certain left-wing accounts are still active on the platform.
