0

Dreadful cases of forceful religious conversion continue to surface from the state of Maharashtra while the Eknath Shinde-led government is taking stringent steps to implement the anti-conversion law in the state. In one such case reported from Daund in Pune, the state police registered an FIR against two individuals named Kumel Kureshi and Asif Sheikh for harassing a Hindu person and his family and forcefully performing ‘khatna’ (circumcision) on him. The police have also booked an unidentified Muslim doctor who helped the primary accused in performing the khatna on the victim.

The FIR has been registered under IPC sections 295-A, 298, 452, 324, 323, 504, 506, and 34 and SC/SCT Act 3(2) (va).

According to the FIR copy obtained by OpIndia, the incident is said to have happened on October 14, however, the complaint was registered by the victim on December 16. The victim who hails from Madha village of Solapur district had been staying in Pune’s Daund region since November 2020. He migrated with his family to Daund for employment purposes in 2020.

FIR copy obtained by OpIndia

The victim in the complaint mentioned that he performed a love marriage with a Muslim woman in June 2018. “She was a widow and mother of two little girls. After our marriage in 2018, we four became family and stayed happily until we shifted to Daund,” the victim said in the complaint.

He added that he and his wife worked on daily wages in Daund and had rented a house in the Kumbhargalli area for themselves to stay in. “We stayed safe for around one and a half years. However, after that one Muslim person identified as Asif Sheikh who stayed in the same building began harassing my wife. He used to keep a watch on her and abused her for marrying me, a Hindu,” the victim said. He also stated that the accused left no chance to make the woman feel uncomfortable.

“On inquiring about his behavior towards us and especially my wife, Sheikh abused me and called me Hindu Kafir. He threatened me to quit my religion and convert to Islam since I had married a Muslim woman,” the victim noted. He further said that he was issued death threats by Sheikh and was asked to leave his wife if he failed to convert his religion to Islam.

Kumel Kureshi and Asif Sheikh named in the FIR

As per the report, Sheikh then contacted another accused, Kumel Kureshi also known as ‘Haji Sahab’ and informed him that a Hindu person had married a Muslim woman in his building. The duo on October 3 barged into the victim’s house and physically abused him for marrying a Muslim woman. Kureshi also thrashed the victim’s two daughters and his wife before taking her forcefully to his office which is located in the Kabristan area in Daund.

“My wife was forcefully taken by that Haji. She returned after two, three hours to reveal that she was threatened by the accused to end her marriage with me (a Hindu). He told her that I was a ‘Kafir’ and that he would get her re-married to a Muslim man who follows the Islamic rituals. He also told her that he would kill me if she failed to end her marriage with me and re-marry a Muslim man instead,” the victim said.

The Muslim woman also confirmed the incident in a video clip obtained by OpIndia. She said that she was threatened by the Haji to get the victim converted to Islam. “I asserted to them that my husband won’t change his religion. If there’s any problem, I will convert my religion to Hinduism. To this he refused and said that I was not supposed to change my religion,” the victim’s wife said.

The FIR further states that the two accused continued to threaten the couple several times since October 4. They barged into their house and slapped their daughters and also mentally tortured the Muslim woman for marrying the victim.

Complaint registered by the victim

On October 14, Asif Sheikh and Kamel Kureshi got a Muslim doctor with them and forcefully entered the victim’s house in the Kumbhargalli area of Daund. The victim’s wife and his daughters were thrown out of the house before they forcefully circumcised the victim and converted him to Islam. “They came that day. I pleaded a lot but they threatened me and said ‘Ab bohot hua tera, aaj tera faisla hoga, tu Islam kaise kabul nh karta vahi dekhte hai (enough is enough now. Today I’ll make sure that you are converted to Islam)’. They also had got a Muslim doctor with them,” the complaint by the victim read.

According to the victim, Sheikh held his hands while Kureshi removed his clothes. “I was continuously pleading. I even told them that I would leave this place and go somewhere forever but they didn’t listen to me. The doctor took out some sharp objects and performed khatna on me after being signaled by Kureshi. Kureshi meanwhile chanted some Islamic lines and converted me to Islam,” the victim who is still terrified by the incident said.

The FIR states that the accused also snatched the identity cards including the Aadhaar Card and Ration Card of the victim and his family after the ‘khatna’ was forcefully performed. The entire incident was also recorded on the mobile phone of the one of the accused. The victim who belongs to the Valmiki community said that he and his family left Daund out of fear after the incident. He added that he was scared and terrified in October when the incident took place so could not report the incident back then.

The victim, however, filed an FIR on December 16 and is seeking justice in the case. Two accused Asif Sheikh and Kumel Kureshi and an unidentified Muslim doctor has been booked by the Police under IPC sections 295-A, 298, 452, 324, 323, 504, 506, and 34 and SC/SCT Act 3(2) (va).

Jains observe a one-day bandh to protest against the Jharkhand govt’s decision to turn Shri Sammed Shikharji Tirth into a tourist spot

Jains across the country are observing a one-day bandh on 21 December 2022 as a mark of protest against the Jharkhand government’s decision to turn Shri Sammed Shikharji, one of the foremost Jain pilgrimage centres in the country, into an eco-tourism spot.

As a part of the Tourism Policy launched this July, the Jharkhand government decided to promote religious tourism at Parasnath Hills, the region that nestles the revered Jain pilgrimage centre from where 20 of the total 24 Tirthankars attained salvation. Every year, thousands of Jains from across the world. undertake the 27 km long trek of climbing the hills to reach the summit that houses the salvation shrines of 20 Tirthankaras. Besides, the hills are also considered holy by the members of the Santhal tribe, who regard it as ‘Marang Buru’ and hold an annual festival here in mid-April.

However, the decision to turn Shri Sammed Shikarji into a tourist destination has had the Jain community on pins and needles, who are fearful that such a move could sully the religious sanctity of the place and secularise one of the few holiest pilgrimage centres that Jains have jealously guarded for thousands of years.

Thousands of Jains, across the country, are observing a one-day bandh on 21st December to protest against the Jharkhand government’s decision and to convey their objection to a regime bent on appropriating religious heritage sites of a minority community, which constitutes only 0.4 per cent of India’s total population. From Gujarat to Rajasthan, to Madhya Pradesh, and several other states, members of the Jain Community hit the streets demanding a rollback of the Soren government’s decision to throw open the Shri Sammed Shikharji pilgrimage for tourists.

“It is a holy place for the community. But ironically, the Jharkhand Government has declared it a tourist place. This will allow the tourists to visit the holy place for fun and entertainment and will disturb the holiness of the place. We appeal to the Government to withdraw its decision immediately and to ensure that the environment of the holy place is not disturbed by tourists,” a member of the Jain community to participated in protests in Mysuru said.

Concerns of violation of religious sanctity of sacred places, and the possibility of vandalism attacks plague Jain devotees

“It is a dangerous move because it sets a precedent for the governments to use religious sites for boosting their tourism revenue. The government exchequer is filled at the expense of the religious salience of a holy site,” said Kirti Vora, a member of the Anandji Kalyanji Trust, an esteemed body that looks after another sacred Jain pilgrimage centre in Palitana, Gujarat.

“When a cultural site is thrown open to tourism, it not only results in the violation of its religious sanctity but also leads to the degeneration of the place and artefacts attached to it,” Vora said while highlighting the chronic vandalism of historical monuments caused by tourists.

Mr Ashish Shah, a member of Parshvanath Mandir Trust in Ahmedabad, said turning a religious site into a tourism centre robs it of its spiritual significance and lowers its pre-eminence among the adherents.

“Jains have spiritual feelings and sentiments attached to Shri Sammed Shikharji. If the place is turned into a tourism hub, those sentiments will eventually evaporate and cease to exist. Over time, the fact that place serves as the resting abode of 20 Tirthankars will lose its significance among Jains,” he added.

Mr Shah also raised alarm bells that turning Sammed Shikharji into a tourist destination could result. He pointed out the recent vandalism attack on an ancient Jain shrine in the holy town of Palitana, where vandals had removed poles and tried to damage the footprints of Lord Adinath, the founder of the Ikshavaku dynasty and the first Jain Tirthankar in the current cycle of 24 Tirthankars. The footprints are regarded by some Jain devotees to be older than the Palitana itself.

“The attacks we have witnessed in recent days, especially in Palitana and other Jain temples across the country, there is little doubt what opening up Sammed Shikharji to tourists would do to the numerous temples hosted on its hills. Will the government provide security to each and every temple on the hills? And what’s the guarantee that such attacks would not take place on Shri Sammed Shikharji once it is commercialised as tourist hub?” Mr Shah questioned.

Jains organise a rally in Palitana over a vandalism attack on an ancient Jain shrine

Over 20 thousand Jains participated in a rally in Palitana and submitted a memorandum to the deputy collector demanding to take action against those who broke a CCTV camera pole and a board at Shetrunjay hill.

Jain Shwetambar Tapgachchh Maha Sangh Ahmedabad and Mumbai Jain Sangh organized a rally in opposition to the attack. Jains from Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore, Surat, Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar travelled to Palitana to participate in the rally and raise their voice against the vandalism attack. A press conference was organised about the incident. Shetrunjay Mahatirth Raksha Samiti Ahmedabad spokesperson Abhaybhai Shah and Ahmedabad Jain Sangh general secretary Pranav Shah demanded immediate action against those responsible for the attack at Shetrunjay Mahatirth.

PFI had links with ISIS and Al-Qaeda, ran a secret wing that made hitlist of people from other communities: NIA tells Kerala court

On Tuesday, December 20, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) submitted in Special NIA Court in Kochi in Kerala that the banned Islamist outfit Popular Front of India (PFI) has links with the terror organisations ISIS and Al Qaeda.

In its report, NIA said that several PFI leaders were in contact with Islamic State and Al Qaeda leaders, and the agency has proof of the same. NIA said this while seeking more time for investigation against PFI leaders arrested after the organisation was banned. As per the NIA investigation, the banned Islamist outfit also ran a secret wing.

The NIA also claimed that the PFI secret wing was compiling a hit list of people from other communities. “The secret wing had a statewide network and was responsible for data collection and the preparation of the list,” the probe agency told the court.

NIA said that “terrorist organisations like ISIS and Al Qaeda carry out their subversive activities by using anti-state and anti-religious outfits like PFI in countries where they cannot operate openly. NIA has received inputs that several PFI leaders in Kerala were in touch with some A Qaeda leaders. This requires detailed investigation.”

The NIA also informed that digital and other evidence have been obtained in connection with PFI’s anti-national activities during the raids.

“The investigation also revealed PFI leaders’ efforts to recruit youth for terrorist activities via social media groups. As the investigation nears completion, several people have already been questioned,” it added.

The NIA has been given an additional 90 days to wrap up the investigation and file the charge sheet. 13 people have been booked in the case filed in Kochi. Following the Court’s decision, their judicial custody period was extended to 180 days.

PFI Ban

On September 27, the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India banned the Islamist organisation Popular Front of India (PFI) and its associated or affiliated fronts with immediate effect for a period of five years by exercising its powers under sub-section (1) of section 3 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (UAPA).

The government said that during the investigation, it was established that PFI created the associates or affiliates or fronts with an objective to enhance its reach “among different sections of the society such as youth, students, women, Imams, lawyers or weaker sections of the society with the sole objective of expanding its membership, influence and fundraising capacity.”

Maharashtra: 17-year-old girl sexually exploited multiple times, accused Ajimoddin Sheikh arrested under POCSO

0

On Monday, the Ahmednagar District Police arrested a person identified as Ajmoddin Mohammed Sheikh (28) for luring a 17-year-old girl into a love affair and then assaulting her sexually several times in past year. The Police have registered an FIR against the accused under IPC sections 376 (2) (n), 506 and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POSCO) sections 5 (j) (2), 5 (l) and 6.

According to the FIR copy obtained by OpIndia, the incident is said to have happened in Bambori village in Rahuri, Ahmednagar in March 2022. However, the FIR was filed by the father of the victim on December 17. The father in the complaint stated that his minor daughter was lured by Ajmoddin Mohammed Sheikh, a resident of Katrad, Rahuri into a love affair. “The accused told my daughter that he was in love with her and that he would marry her. He then raped my daughter several times on the farmland which is located behind our house,” the father said.

FIR copy obtained by OpIndia

He said that he came to know about the incident on December 15 when his daughter complained of stomach ache. He took her to the doctor who told him that his daughter was pregnant and that she needed to be operated on immediately. As per the FIR copy, the girl delivered a baby girl at Aher Hospital, Rahuri and upon interrogation revealed that she was raped by Sheikh a few months ago.

The girl stated in the complaint that she was first contacted by the accused over phone. She said that she was called by Sheikh to meet in person in March on the farm behind the victim’s house. “We met that day. He told me that he loved me and that he wanted to marry me. And after some time he forced himself upon me. I kept on refusing but he assaulted me and threatened me to keep shut,” the girl said.

Accused Sheikh named in the FIR

She added that he called her twice after that day to meet on the farm and again raped her. “In May, I discovered that I was pregnant. Ajmoddin asked me to operate myself after I informed him about the pregnancy. He also threatened me that he would defame me and my family in the village if I speak the truth out,” she said.

The father of the girl meanwhile stated that his daughter was scared back then so could not report the incident. “I have sent my daughter to her uncle’s house in Talegaon Dabhade. She is being taken care of there,” he added. As per the FIR copy, the girl was 17 years old when the incident happened, however, she turned 18 at the time of filing the FIR.

Compliant reported by the father of the victim

According to the local reports, SI Sandeep Matke and Inspector Pratap Darade of Rahuri Police took cognizance of the incident and initiated immediate action against the 28-year-old accused. The Police arrested the accused on December 19, two days after the FIR was filed.

Local reports reveal that the accused has been arrested

Earlier, a similar incident was reported from Patan town of Satara district, Maharashtra after the Maharashtra Police arrested an individual named Saif Ali Saleem for raping a 14-year-old Hindu Adivasi girl. The accused sexually assaulted the victim twice in the year and shot videos on his phone.

In the current case, the accused has been arrested and has been booked by the Police under IPC sections 376 (2) (n), 506 and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POSCO) sections 5 (j) (2), 5 (l) and 6. Further investigations in the case are underway.

Rahul Gandhi angrily pushes down the phone of a fan who wanted a selfie with him, watch video

0

On December 21, a video of Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra (BJY) went viral where the Congress leader was seen pushing down the phone of a fan who wanted a selfie with him. The video appeared to be from Rajasthan and was shot early morning on December 21, Gandhi was seen surrounded by his supporters on the stage.

All of them wanted to get clicked with the leader and started pushing each other. Irked by the situation, Gandhi angrily pushed down the phone of a fan who was trying to get a selfie with him. He seemed irritated with the attempt to take a selfie with him and did not allow the man to take the selfie.

The Bharat Jodo Yatra will reach Haryana today.

Within seconds after the incident, Gandhi left the stage. Notably, Gandhi has been claiming to propagate the ‘politics of love’ throughout his Bharat Jodo Yatra. Gandhi, who has spent over 100 days on the roads of India, visibly lost cool on the stage. The BJY is scheduled for a 9-day break starting from December 24, just a day before Christmas. By that day, Gandhi will be in Delhi. The BJY will resume on January 3, after the New Year celebrations are over, from Delhi itself.

It is unclear where Gandhi is going to spend his break. Notably, he did not attend Parliament’s winter session claiming it would not be possible for him to attend as the BJY is ongoing. However, he seems okay with taking a break for nine days when Christmas and New Year are around.

Riva Arora’s Instagram account was removed, and mother apologises to NCPCR, child actor was getting lewd comments on her posts

The Instagram account of child actor Riva Arora has been removed from the platform. It is unclear when the account went offline or was remove by Instagram. However, her accounts on other platforms like Facebook and YouTube are active but have a low profile.

Notably, the National Commission of Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) took cognisance of the controversial Instagram reel of Riva with adult male actor Karan Kundra in which one of the shots was done in a bar setup. The reel was later removed after the outrage. Furthermore, Nisha Arora, mother of Riva Arora, submitted a written apology to the commission.

In an Instagram post on November 18, her mother wrote, “I, Nisha Arora, tender my apology for the video I made for my daughter Riva Arora’s account where I used alcohol setup and which created so much problem and bad image in the society. I heartily believe being an actor and role models for society, we should portray a good image in society, I wanted to request all child actors and their parents to avoid such kinds of videos. I will take care in future, and I have given an apology letter to the NCPCR and given them all the clarifications related to the issue.”

The Instagram reel controversy

On October 19, it was reported that an Instagram reel starring minor actor Riva Arora and 38-year-old actor Kunal Kundrra went viral on social media. In the reel, Kundrra played the role of the boyfriend, Riva, who already had a relationship with another man. The idea behind the reel was to showcase that the actress in the reel has an affair with two men. The actors opposite Riva in the reel were adults, while Riva was not even a teen. The reel also contained a bar scene where the 12-year-old girl sits cross-legged wearing a very revealing dress. She even moved, talked and used facial expressions like an adult woman dating two men. Notably, Riva was consistently receiving lewd comments on her Instagram posts, and on some occasions, men have also said how they are masturbating to her images and videos.

Riva’s mother dismissed the concerns

Later on October 23, Riva’s mother took to Instagram to defend her daughter. Instead of addressing the issue of her daughter’s safety, she was focussing on her age and claimed that she was not 12. Riva Arora’s mother said, “It’s unfortunate to see renowned publications spreading false information about a young girl without any verifications. My daughter is currently in the 10th grade. She has worked in the industry for more than 13 years and achieved everything with utmost integrity and perseverance.” If Arora is in 10th standard, she would likely be 14-15 years of age and still a minor and too young to understand hyper sexualisation of herself.

Riva Arora’s latest song ‘Disco Wali Raat’

In the latest song starring Riva Arora, released on YouTube on December 15, Riva was dancing to the song ‘Disco Wali Raat’ in a disco-bar setup. Sung by Sakshi Holkar, the song also features Abhishek Kumar, a 22-year-old actor and influencer. The song’s comments were switched off by the channel that uploaded it.

Afghanistan: Taliban imposes ban on university education for women

0

Amidst the brutal clampdown on women’s rights in Sharia-governed Afghanistan, the Taliban regime has banned university education for women on Tuesday. As per the new order, access to universities for female students will remain suspended till further notice.

In a letter, confirmed by Ziaullah Hashimi, the spokesperson of Afghanistan’s Ministry of Education, all the public and private universities are instructed to suspend access to female students immediately, in compliance with the cabinet decision.

“You are all informed to immediately implement the mentioned order of suspending female education until further notice,” said a letter signed by Minister of Higher Education Neda Mohammad Nadeem and addressed to all government and private universities.

The US has condemned the regressive order issued by the Taliban. US State Secretary Antony Blinken called the Taliban’s announcement a setback to their objective of being accepted by the international community.

“Deeply dismayed by the announcement from the Taliban denying women the right to university education. Afghan women deserve better. Afghanistan deserves better. The Taliban have just definitively set back their objective of being accepted by the international community,” Blinken tweeted.

In his official statement, Blinken said, “No other country in the world bars women and girls from receiving education.

US State Department spokesperson Ned Price in a statement condemned the “indefensible decision.”

Human rights watchdog, Human Rights Watch, slammed the move by the Taliban and said, “A shameful move. The Taliban have banned women in Afghanistan from attending universities. This is the latest in a series of policies that have restricted the basic rights of women and girls.”

The ban on higher education comes three months after thousands of girls and women across the country took university entrance exams. The universities are currently closed for the winter and will reopen in March.

Following the Taliban’s takeover of the country, universities were compelled to implement new rules, such as gender-segregated classrooms and entrances. Women were only permitted to be educated by women professors or old men. Girls in Afghanistan already have very limited access to secondary education and a ban now on their university education shatters their dreams of pursuing careers of their choice.

On December 17, former Vice President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Amrullah Saleh exposed the new school curriculum issued by the Taliban-led government in the country. In a series of tweets, Saleh said that the new curriculum had introduced 62 recent changes, including calling the United Nations’ satanic’ and anti-woman regulations.
